Has anyone else had this problem? I continually re-update the contact through gmail then force update on phone, still 5-10 hours (guesstimate) it resets the contact picture back.
Any help or idea would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
What picture is it setting it back to? Do you have Facebook set to sync contact pics?

I do not have facebook sync turned on (not really a facebook person), I did at one point, but I turned it off (I double/triple checked this). I believe it resets to the SIM contact picture.

As far as I'm aware, SIM won't have the capacity to store contact pictures.
If you check within the contacts themselves they should show you all the images associated with that contact.
If you notice "additional" images try deleting them and see if that stops the images changing?
I manually deleted the images associated with each contact (looks like default HTC male/female head) quite some time ago. Anyhow, instead of changing the contact within gmail, I have decided to make the change on the phone itself. This is a PITA to do for all contacts, but will try.
The strange thing is that this only occurs with some contacts and not all.
The same contact pictures have reset once again. This time I noticed that the image it reset to is the same as the HTC HD2 male/female icon. And one other contact reset to the same really old (few years old) picture.
I am convinced they have to be coming from the SIM card.
I'm assuming you can't see the "old" images against the contact in the address book?
Have you checked your google contacts list (need to do this online) to make sure you don't have duplicate contacts which could be screwing up pics?

Hi guys, this is my first post but ive been lurking here for a while trying to learn more about my phone.
This is a bit long winded so please bare with me..
I bought this phone about a week ago from rogers wireless. It's locked to rogers and i updated the phone with the SE updater to the latest version they have. I bought the phone under my contract and then gave it to my wife (her old phone broke so i thought it would be nice to give her a new one)
She's now using her old simcard in the phone and other than the phonebook contacts keep disappearing, everything else works fine and all the txt msgs are intact.
1) whenever i switch sims from her's back to mine, the phonebook will be cleared.
2) today she told me that the phonebook cleared even though she didnt touch the simcard.
any idea as to why this is happening? she thinks the phone is defective i think its just something software. Im going to try and do a factory reset on the phone and setup the entire phone w/ her sim instead of mine (which is what i originally done) and then update again on SE updates.
Gmail sync
Hi
I've had the problem too. It turned out that the synchronization with Gmail was the culprit. The phone saw that a given contact was not in the contact list in Gmail and therefore deleted it from the phone instead of adding it to the Gmail contact list. The same goes for changes to contacts - if I change something on the phone, it disappears when the phone syncs. If I want to keep the changes, I have to make them in the Gmail list. I don't know how to change that behaviour.

Yeah that's just BS. I didn't sync with Gmail right at the start, so when I finally did it last weekend, I lost all of my 249 contacts. Luckily, I had them backed up on my old sim card, so I restored them, but all the contact pictures, facebook links etc were lost
Gmail sync fail
wow! thanks for solving the mystery Martin!
Any idea how i can either import all those contacts to gmail's contacts (other than manually inserting them.. )
Man it's so friggin annoying to have to restore my contact book every time the damn google sync does a check.

You could just turn off google sync
well it seems like ive turned off google sync and yet it still has this problem. I figure it might be attributed to her having to log into google accounts??? there is a message on the notification bar sometimes that asks her to log into her google account. Could that be it?
Every time it doesn't detect a password/or has the user logged in, will it purge all the contacts? Is there even a safe way of backing up the contacts on SD card and then transferring that file to my HD so i can reformat the phone for her?
not sure if anyone else is having this issue..but after i updated to the ota 2.2 froyo, i noticed all my contacts used their old photos instead of the ones synced with facebook.... so does that mean i have to automatically go through each contact and click default picture to facebook???
i already deleted my fb accounts and redid it many times..restarted phone..same issue...fb wont auto sync the new photos as default, so i have to go through my contacts manually to use the updated fb pics...
That's odd. I'm not sure but I think the Facebook app's syncing is goofy.
For instance here's the hoops I had to jump through.
With original 2.1, I had used the integrated Facebook contact syncing to get pics synced to my contacts. And that worked no problem.
When DK28 came out, I took the opportunity to reset my phone and redo my contacts. This time I figured "hey, the actual Facebook app contact syncing should work good so I'll use that instead". And on the surface it did. In my contacts list the proper Facebook pic was on each contact. The problem was that any txts or phone calls I either sent or received, the photos were absent...just the generic blank silhouette. So I removed the Facebook contact sync from my accounts and went back to using the the Facebook syncing from the "Integrated contact accounts" once more and now photos are displaying in txt/phone properly.
Odd that the Facebook client syncing appeared on the surface to be fine but maybe this will help you or others trying to get this to work. In your case maybe the old pics still there show up with the Facebook client sync. Hopefully the integrated Facebook sync will clear it up for you.
Search the forums for this problem. It has been answered. I just am too lazy to find the post for ya.

I have a different problem with the FB app since upgrading to DK28, but I wasn't sure if it deserved its own thread.
I can no longer stay logged in to my account. It works the first time and then every subsequent time I open the app I have to re-enter my password.
Anyone else?

i tried..it didnt solve the problem..... like i mentioned i redid the facebook accounts and restarted phone etc...didnt work....
i think its from the exporting my contacts to sd card.... it saves the current picture before exporting..so perhaps i exported my contacts several times and it saved the same default picture under the phone settings... so when i integrated my facebook in 2.2, the old photos were showing..so i had to manually erase all of the old saved photos.... i couldnt find a way to automatically do it... if you still can find the posts/threads, please post it here
Is it me or are the contact photos synced from facebook (integrated Facebook sync or through Facebook app) are low resolution? Anyway we can fix this or is this just another issue with Google?
When I have a contact who has a Facebook account, the contact picture can be downloaded from there. This used to work on my HD2 for months, but about one month ago my HD2 stopped to download the contact pictures from Facebook. Even the ones which were already there have now dissapeared, so now I don't have any contact pictures from Facebook at all.
The folder Windows\FBContacts is now empty although the syncing is turned on (I also tried to turn it off and turn it on anew several times...).
Can somebody help me to solve this problem?

From your computer change the security settings on your profile login to HTTP instead of HTTPS....
Account Settings-->Account Security-->HTTP
THANK YOU SO MUCH, IT WORKS!!!
I would never ever come to this solution on myself! I always thought that the problem was some wrong setting or any conflict on my HD2 and I would never look for the solution somewhere else.
UPDATE: I got excited too early thinking the problem is fixed. It's just the google sync took too long. So, we still have to use magnifying glasses to view the tiny useless image for caller id picture.
One of my favorite feature on SE android phones is how uniquely it displays contact image while dialing or incoming call. That got messed up in previous update.
Now, it looks fine and the google image is not over writing the image selected on phone.
I've still got the problem in 2.3.4, in case the phone book is sync with Google contacts.
How to fix the problem??

The problem is still present in this update.
Tried using high res pics for my contacts.
Auto sync to Google contacts is enabled.
Viewed my contacts after the sync and picture size returned to low resolution.
Now I removed the check mark on "Sync Contacts" for a temporary solution and backed up the contacts on my desktop.
Sigh.
In my current 2.3.3 fw, the contact pictures do not have this problem if you go into album, select a picture, click on options and set it as caller image. However, if you go into your contact list and change the caller image by editing contact info, this problem comes up. Either way it's still too much hassle setting caller image for every contact in the phonebook. I'll bear with the tiny photo sync-ed with Facebook for now.

I waited for more than a minute and the high res image stayed. Must be some slow sync at that time. You are right it doesn't work even if you set contact picture form gallery instead of setting from Contacts - Edit.

If that worked in 2.3.3, it doesn't any more in 2.3.4.
I have solved this by adding the contact person manually as internal contact and not google contact. If you give it the same name it will automatically be linked to the google contact, you do not have to add any phone numbers, just an empty contact with the same name. This contact will have priority over the google contact and added highres pictures to the internal contact will be used instead of the small google/facebook contact.
I can see some reason to this, if you have 1MB pictures on over 100 contacts and you sync them all, that will cost allot for those who do not have unlimited data. Many users are not technically enough to be aware of this when setting up their new phone with a google contact, this could lead to allot of unhappy customers/users with huge bills just by synchonizing their contacts.
The other issue would be the huge cost of internal memory having 100MB consumed just to store high res pictures for 100+ contacts and time it might take to synchronize.
It might take some time to do this manually but once done the pictures will stay for the contacts. I do not mind this workaround to have high res pictures, but can see it might be a big hassle for those few how often reset their phones and would have to set everything up again and again.
Do any of you know where the contact pictures are stored? I would think the internal memory but I am not sure, I am only using high res pictures on a few of my contacts.
Use Sony sync for contacts and your images will remain the same.

Don't worry this firmware is just a middle version the "full" version will come in october till november so there is still a chance to fix :]
anyone else spotted anything else exept contacts?
This problem is back in the ICS(at least the Arconium 2.2 ICS) The callerID is ok if I use facebook contacs sync app from play store. But the main Sheet of contact info is different. It only has this cmall little useless picture on the top left. I want the faded almost full screen like picture back. Any ideas?
this isn't a bug with the sony firmware it is a google contacts sync problem there is a bug filed on it in the google code group but after 10 min of searching i couldn't find it
Pvy.
Not sure what when wrong, but I no longer have any contact pictures, only Skype contacts have pictures now. In google pictures are still in place, they simply disappeared from the phone contacts. I have a strong suspicion that this happened after recent update of Skype... Anyone faced a similar problem? And how shell I restore pictures now???

Have you tried to go to Contacts(People) and checked on settings which contacts are displayed? If that's not the case try to unlink your Gmail account from your phone...but that means you would have to reset.

I tried to go to People->Accounts-> chose my google account. There was an option to force syncing. It showed me that everything is synced now. Yet there are no pictures!

You have to go in to Settings>Accounts>Google, then select your account. Then hit your menu in top right corner and remove the account.
Then you re add it and it will sync up.
However removing the account will delete all messages, and other data from it.
So if you want to save the data or messages better back them up first.
somehow I was hoping there is a more elegant way of sorting this out....
This skype, it only brings more and more trouble with every next version, should have removed it years ago!
somehow I was hoping there is a more elegant way of sorting this out............
well:
1) Go to GMail contacts in your computer (not on the phone).
2) Select ALL your contacts or only My Contacts and mark them as "Starred in Android".Or even better: make a new label lets call it "repair" and mark all the contacts/my contacts as "repair"
3) The previous step forces Google to sync the contacts in GMail with the phone (with picture and all). It will take a while depending on the number of contacts that you have, so be patient and leave the phone alone while it is doing the sync.
4) After some 10 or 15 minutes (I have about 300 contacts), all the pics of GMail contacts appeared on my phone
5) Now, go you may to GMail contacts again and select ALL your contacts and uncheck the "Starred in Android" or "repair" option. Again, this will take a few minutes while GMail syncs with your phone.
I prefer to use only "My contacts" as it will be logical thats the only place with pictures in it.
----
By the way. I have the idea that, as soon as you restart Skype on your Android your pictures dissappear again.
Be very careful with contacts on your phone who lost there picture. If you edit one of them on your phone it will synch to Google of course without the picture.
------
So no Skype to be used?
Thanks Microsoft. But I fully understand that it is very difficult for such a small company to make decent software.
P.s. A part of this solution I stole from another forum. Unfortunately cannot find anymore where I got it from to give the full credits to.
I just copied it in my Evernote.
P.s. 2: I have a galaxy II so I suppose this thread should be under Android software.
That was a good advise indeed! I managed to restore contact pictures. Then I started skype again - and now I have no more pictures again. So I can definitely say this problem is due to skype... So now I have dilemma: either live without contact pictures, or live without skype... Nice

Oh yes, it is really strange that this problem is not bothering anyone... Or is it just me who have this problem?? I tried to google it, thinking that maybe there is a solution somewhere in skype settings. But I could not find anything! For the moment I just disabled contact syncing with skype via telephone settings. Let's see if it helps...

Disable Skype contact synching! That's seems to solve it. Great idea. never thought about that option.

Even I had the same issue and had to disable Skype syncing so that i get the pictures back.
How can MS release the update without testing it properly!
Also, there is nobody on the internet talking about it except some few of us...i don;t know why aren't they bothered at all...as good as nobody noticed it...

Happened to me too yesterday. Microsoft..yey!
Quick fix with ON/OFF starred contacts in android.
Definitely stop syncing Skype contacts! :good:
There's already a thread by me about it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2351825
I wasn't sure it was caused by Skype until just now, when I found this thread and similar thread on Skype forums - http://community.skype.com/t5/Andro...ing-all-non-Skype-contact-photos/td-p/1735257
And so do many others, probably... They don't blame Skype, I think.
i actually have the same problem.( GALAXY S4 ) it started about a week ago, contact pictures decided to dissappear, after i updated skype, im gonna try to uncheck the contact sync for skype and will report back
Sure - Skype
Same problem - HTC Desire X. After installing Skype 4 update all contacts photos (Google) disappeared. Syncing via Starred, after Skype sync photos again disappeared. Uninstall Skype 4, install 3.2 = contacts photos OK, but Skype contats synced only cca half... and without avatars.

LOL, I just couldn't live without skype.
But you can alter to Whats app or viber.
Recently I use Wechat. That's a instant messaging app from a Chinese firm. Convenient but still Skype holds most users.

Did you try to change the settings IN Skype where you can opt for NOT synchronizing contacts?
That should be enough.
Skype works fine with that option switched of..
And it will show all your existing Skype contacts.
