F3'ed Vista. Reinstalled and updated. Blue Screen and now the HD is Slow

Hi.
Bought a second hand Shift yesterday.
Device was working fine, but i reset it with F3 to get a clean install.
Updated all over WindowsUpdate, Downloaded all drivers from HTC in the order as described.
Today i suddenly got a blue screen after the device was hanging.
After reboot the Registry was unreadable so it wouldn't boot, and it took for ever to get to the read error + a few blue screens in between.
Now when i hit F3 and reset, it takes for ever to load the initial files.
The white bar crawls about 1cm to the right in about 20minuts........
Is the HD totally F..... up or what do you think?
HD LED is constantly on, instead of the more normal constant-blink-constant behavior
So i took my Vista Ultimate CD and copied it on to a Mem stick.
Boot fine and starts the install process, but somethings not quite right.
Slow to copy files to the disk, mostly it freezes at some point.
Always stops 55% when unpacking files.
Anyone known with the Vista safe mode options, so i can run a check and perhaps repair of the partition?
Might work.
I had the same problem and sent it back to htc they reimaged it and sent me it back, it booted ok first time, then crashed and would not boot or install vista again (fn+f3 or usb imaged I had) I then sent it back again and they put in new hdd and its been fine ever since.
You could run dft (drive fitness tool) its free and can be loaded from usb, just to check hdd.
Well I might as well document my process on recovering a bad HD as i go, for later reference :
I got Vista Ultimate on my main PC, so why not try to boot from an original installation CD.
To do this we need to Copy the CD on to an USB Stick.
I Use a Kingston 8GB DataTraveler.
On your Desktop PC go :
Start -> Run -> cmd.exe (Command promt opens)
Put your USB Stick in
Type the following
diskpart
list disk (And take note of which is your USB Stick = Disk 0, Disk 1, etc.etc.)
select disk ? (As you found out above)
clean
create partition primary
select partition 1
active
format fs=fat32
assign
exit
Now we need to copy the Vista DVD on to the memory Stick (Stick is F: from now on):
Put your Vista DVD in the DVD Drive (We call that E: from now on)
Then type
xcopy e:\*.* /s/e/f f:\
It takes a while, so go ahead and surf some nasty xxx sites while you wait....you know you want to
BUT don't take out the Stick before cmd.exe is back at regular promt.
Done.
Shut down Shift Vista if it ain't already
Put the Stick in it.
Turn on and press FN+10 at the Boot menu
Choose to Boot from your Stick.
First Vista install window you choose your local settings
Then choose the Repair option/link
Deselect any HD and click Next
Open Dos/Command promt (I'm on Norwegian and it's called Ledetekst go figure) you'll recognize the Icon
The Prompt should be at X:\Sources>
HERE I WOULD LIKE TO COPY OUT RECOVERY PARTITION DATA.
If you know how to show and activate and xcopy it out of there, please do leave a comment
First we will test the drive with chkdsk :
Type :
chkdsk c:
If you get errors, try and run
chkdsk c: /b /r /f (the /b parameter should include /r which should include /f but write them all)
Hopefully it will repair your disk and mark bad Clusters accordingly.
Try to do a recovery with the FN+F3 at boot.
Mine did some repairs, but ends with an unspecified error at step 4 of 5 :-(
------------------
If not, Then :
Type :
diskpart
list disk
You should see
Disk 0 34 G bytes (This is your HD)
Disk 1 7656 M byte (This is your Stick, but would match your size)
select Disk 0
clean
create partition primary
select partition 1
active
format fs=ntfs (This will take loooong time, so just head on over to your xxx site again.)
assign
exit
Now you run chkdsk to check for faults again:
chkdsk
A) If no error, reboot and try FN+F3 to recover from the recovery disc.
If the recovery fails, you have to boot Vista installation again and do chkdsk to be sure the failed recovery haven't messed it all up again. (Mine didn't work)
B) If errors type:
format c: /p:1 this will reset every sector to 0 (back to the xxx again)
then
chkdsk /b /r /f
Hopefully you will get no errors.
Hi scott.
Haven't figured out how to get those peski Floppy dos tools to install on to an USB stick, they always want to go to A:
And anybody with knowledge of how to hide/unhide partitions in DOS/cmd, please scream out
hp usb storage tool - Will help make usb with dos tools
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=390003 hide/unhide partitions in DOS/cmd
Ok thanks for the HP tip.
I have seen Mr. riki0081's thread, but i wanted to stay in Vista dos if possible.
Mainly because i only have one USB Stick, secondly because I'm stubborn
Thanks
It's going to service.
It just wont stop making read/write errors, and now it wont even show up in BIOS any more.
Has the all to well known sound klik klik klonk......klik klik klonk......etc. etc. of a failed HD

[Q] Missing Press any key to boot from cd or dvd

Hi!
I was about to install windows 8 64 bit but when the installation hung up I realized that the dvd was corrupt. So I tried turning off my PC, but when that didn't work i turned it of manually. But when I tried again the "press any key to boot from cd or dvd" was missing. After that I tried to boot from BIOS with a windows 7 dvd, but that didn't work either. So now I installed windows 7 through a USB. And when the installation was finished I found out that the CD drive worked fine, I cud use it like nothing was wrong. so it doesn't work on BOOT but in windows it does
So my question is how do I fix this? How do to get the "Press any key to boot from cd or dvd" to come back?
Is this somting That I Can`t fix, are there anny thing wrong with the mother board?
seriously... Bring up the boot devices list and select CD/DVD Drive. or use USB if available.
You can press F11 while starting up to choose boot device...........
And then DVD drive
I have tried to boot up from the CD/DVD but the system skips it.
Something like fast boot enabled on bios?
Go into your BIOS settings and disable all of your boot devices except your CD/DVD drive... should be able to force boot to CD/DVD?
Are U installing on PC or a Tablet, if PC then post it specs.
if Tablet then which one.
Also Search/Google for windows development preview forum and find out ur answer.
Ur problem may be due to corrupt ISO or DVD as i also faced this problem, so downloaded the ISO again and problem solved.
Try running it in Virtual Machine for its integrity if u can.
Sent from my GT-S5570 using xda premium
instead of booting it from the DVD, why dont you just try it from the Flash Drive?

[SOLVED]driver fail???

the first time i plugged in my kf i got this (see pic). plus when i tried to upload the pic, it said "please insert disk into F:" which so happens to be the port of my kindle, so then i unplugged it and it was all good. this is really weird.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22342376&postcount=6
furthermore i would recommend you to read this first:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1552547
ok, but how do i resolve the disk issue im having. when i tried to upload that screenshot, i got an error saying please insert disk into drive F. when i unplugged the kindle, the upload worked. what is happening???
i don't know the configuration of your computer but it seems that there is something wrong with the drive mappings - check in manage - hard disk manager or such - mine is in a other language - try to put the kindle drive to a other letter
ok. i will also try another usb port. will report back later. thx!!!!
tried a diff usb port, now works.
but its not showing up in adb!!
is your kf normally started ?
if yes then you have the wrong driver - it should be android composite adb interface
which drivers are you using ?
please read the links i give you !
Yes!!! It finaly works!!! Im rooted!!
glad to help ...

Windows 8 won't start

First off i apologize if this is the wrong place to ask this, i couldnt find a Q&A thread for windows, also ive spent hours on Google looking and couldn't find anything that worked, but anyway my aunt a few days ago hit her computer( shes the kind of person where if it doesn't work just hit it) and it black screended on startup, like you press the power button and nothing, its a lenovo (i dont know what model) but i booted it into recovery, did a BIOS recovery, but it didnt finish, so i checked to see if the computer was reading the hard drive and it is, im taking my Toshiba to swap the hard drive to see if thats the problem, she wants to keep all her data but i said that may not be a possibility, i just want to know if anyone here can tell me what might be the problem, im convinced its thr hard drive as the toshiba had a similiar fate a few months ago. So any help would be great, also again if this is the wrong thread im sorry
EDIT: I don't know if its Windows 7 or 8, also its current state is it stops at the lenovo boot screen

Try windows start up repair. easiest way to do this, get the windows installation disc and boot into that and select start up repair.
id guess a HDD failure or more likely a corruption with windows if it wasnt shut down properly
could also try a fresh install of windows, just dont format the harddrive during installation. this way windows installation should save all the old data into a (old windows) folder on the c drive

Before buying a new drive, put her hdd on your pc to see if it is still healthy, bad-sector-free. You check this with hdsentinel.
Also, try to boot her laptop with a hdd/ssd that is working properly.

I tried looking for a hard drive adapter, i didnt want to put the hdd into my computer as i read it could crash it as the drivers are for a different computer, but if it works without harm ill do it, also finding an adapter here isnt easy, as i live in mexico and BestBuy is 2 hours away

Hm, I don't think that plugging the hdd will crash your computer, but still, it's just a crash, unplug-restart and it's gone.
However, since I haven't been in a similar situation, you can try to plug it in a computer that runs any OS but windows, e.g. a linux pc, since win drivers won't affect a different OS.
Yet, I think it's obvious that if you plug it in your pc, you won't select it as a boot drive.

D802 bricked, tried everything

Hello everyone. Here's my story
I've been using CM13. After installing their OTA update it ruined my android. So I downloaded new cm13 rom, wiped everything, accidentally clicked reboot (without flashing new rom) and it was over (At least I think this happened, it was some time ago and I'm already trying to fix this for a long).
I am stuck in LG logo. Can't access recovery (I've had this issue before. Could get to recovery only by command from adb).
I can get to Download mode. But PC can't see my device. Tried several PC's, windows, ubuntu. I flashed other phones with this method, only G2 is not visible. I'm doing here everything fine.
Also I tried this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g2/general/lg-g2-unbrickable-fix-real-hard-brick-t2904404
Success but my phone keeps flashing on and off. I've got access to partitions like every 5 seconds and only for a second. I think I managed to flash those 3 partitions, but there's no difference, pc still can't see phone when in download mode.
Should I trow it to the ocean?
Keep it
Here is my story
Bricked my device (d802) with your stuation no recovey no download mode
My phone's partition table deleted any way, tried wire method which you've already tried
Tried several times and release this wire method put in 2 seperate modes
Found the mode it shows in ubuntu a sda block (with several tries with wire method)
I've got full 32 gig backup, thats my advantage between your stuation
In ubuntu fdisk - l shows all disk and shows my phone as a disk but no information about disk or partitions etc. only sda block
In the end pushed the 32 gig backup with dd if=/(path of my backup) of=/dev/block/sd* bs=4k
Wait some time until process done (30-45 minutes I guess)
Thats all, phone boots normally everything is fine
If you're using 32 gig version I can send you my backup (with imei deleted) so you can boot your device and install kdz
Or I can show you how to backup another LG phone and recover from that backup. http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g2/general/how-to-backup-data-16-gb-32-gb-size-t3236558
Thank you for your reply lynxrz
I've got bigger problem. When I enter qhsusb mode, backlight of my screen keeps switching on and off every 3-4 seconds. I can see partition only for a second.

Not necesaary to see partitions
In ubuntu or any linux enviroment open up a teeminal emulator and "sudo fdisk -l" and it will be like that;
Code:
$ sudo fdisk -l
Disk /dev/sda: 8589 MB, 8589934592 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 1044 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x00008ec7
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 * 1 1013 8136891 8e Linux LVM
/dev/sda2 1014 1044 249007+ 5 Extended
/dev/sda5 1014 1044 248976 83 Linux
sda sdb sdc means a phisicial disk. sda1 sda2 sda3 means partitions of "sda" disk. My process depends on overwriting sda disk not partitions, so you don't need to see partitions
Just type "sudo fdisk -l" and tell me you can see any sdb sdc phisical disk permenately. We must know connection can be dropped or not(it can be bootloop). Partitions might disappear but phisical disk have to be there. Look for it.
If you can't see in qhsusb mode try another mode, this is the lucky part of tring the wire method. I don't know exactly how to swich "another" mode but you can detect in window device manager, then switch to linux (Don't be afraid to losing this mode it stays when you plug off usb if you connected battery)
Sorry I don't remember that "another" mode's name but it is exists
Firstly you need to know qhsusb mode can see a "phisical" disc or not?
I'm in work now, but I tried this yesterday.
Phone appears as sdc when I typed
Code:
$ ls /dev/sd*
while in qhsusb mode. (I had to type it several times repeatedly to catch the right moment)
I can get to download mode, so I typed
Code:
$ sudo fdisk -l
and couldn't see sdc there.

Probably it can be bootloop.
Did you plug off the battery when touching capacitor ? Just asking to be sure.
Sure, I unplugged the battery So qhsusb not stable and download mod not visible to computers.
I already gave up of hope
Ok I will solve how to enter "another" mode (not qhsusb)
But I need time to backup all my data in any case
If I solve, prepare a backup for you and it'll be 32 GB
Edit: Can not find out "another" mode because of data cable problem (severed usb cable charging but not transferring data) You're on your own now to find another usb mode, It can be the "holding time" of cable on capacitor.
Good luck with that
Prepairing your backup with otg

You're welcome
PS: Did I send pm the download link?
You did. 29.1GB rar file. I have no use for it till I find another mode to be able to flash partition.
I already bought G3. Probably I will sell G2 for parts
Uploading now and it was %17 maybe tomorrow will be uploaded %100
20,4 GB and compressed seperated 1 GB rar parts (21 parts)
Realised by you broken usb, I'll solder it but no time for that now, 2 days later I'll try it.
I'm stuborn as hell with that Just wait we'll fix it don't sell
Maybe I can make a tutorial and help the others
UPDATE: Usb works I'll try it tomorrow
