F3'ed Vista. Reinstalled and updated. Blue Screen and now the HD is Slow - Shift General

Hi.
Bought a second hand Shift yesterday.
Device was working fine, but i reset it with F3 to get a clean install.
Updated all over WindowsUpdate, Downloaded all drivers from HTC in the order as described.
Today i suddenly got a blue screen after the device was hanging.
After reboot the Registry was unreadable so it wouldn't boot, and it took for ever to get to the read error + a few blue screens in between.
Now when i hit F3 and reset, it takes for ever to load the initial files.
The white bar crawls about 1cm to the right in about 20minuts........
Is the HD totally F..... up or what do you think?
HD LED is constantly on, instead of the more normal constant-blink-constant behavior

So i took my Vista Ultimate CD and copied it on to a Mem stick.
Boot fine and starts the install process, but somethings not quite right.
Slow to copy files to the disk, mostly it freezes at some point.
Always stops 55% when unpacking files.
Anyone known with the Vista safe mode options, so i can run a check and perhaps repair of the partition?
Might work.

I had the same problem and sent it back to htc they reimaged it and sent me it back, it booted ok first time, then crashed and would not boot or install vista again (fn+f3 or usb imaged I had) I then sent it back again and they put in new hdd and its been fine ever since.
You could run dft (drive fitness tool) its free and can be loaded from usb, just to check hdd.

Well I might as well document my process on recovering a bad HD as i go, for later reference :
I got Vista Ultimate on my main PC, so why not try to boot from an original installation CD.
To do this we need to Copy the CD on to an USB Stick.
I Use a Kingston 8GB DataTraveler.
On your Desktop PC go :
Start -> Run -> cmd.exe (Command promt opens)
Put your USB Stick in
Type the following
diskpart
list disk (And take note of which is your USB Stick = Disk 0, Disk 1, etc.etc.)
select disk ? (As you found out above)
clean
create partition primary
select partition 1
active
format fs=fat32
assign
exit
Now we need to copy the Vista DVD on to the memory Stick (Stick is F: from now on):
Put your Vista DVD in the DVD Drive (We call that E: from now on)
Then type
xcopy e:\*.* /s/e/f f:\
It takes a while, so go ahead and surf some nasty xxx sites while you wait....you know you want to
BUT don't take out the Stick before cmd.exe is back at regular promt.
Done.
Shut down Shift Vista if it ain't already
Put the Stick in it.
Turn on and press FN+10 at the Boot menu
Choose to Boot from your Stick.
First Vista install window you choose your local settings
Then choose the Repair option/link
Deselect any HD and click Next
Open Dos/Command promt (I'm on Norwegian and it's called Ledetekst go figure) you'll recognize the Icon
The Prompt should be at X:\Sources>
HERE I WOULD LIKE TO COPY OUT RECOVERY PARTITION DATA.
If you know how to show and activate and xcopy it out of there, please do leave a comment
First we will test the drive with chkdsk :
Type :
chkdsk c:
If you get errors, try and run
chkdsk c: /b /r /f (the /b parameter should include /r which should include /f but write them all)
Hopefully it will repair your disk and mark bad Clusters accordingly.
Try to do a recovery with the FN+F3 at boot.
Mine did some repairs, but ends with an unspecified error at step 4 of 5 :-(
------------------
If not, Then :
Type :
diskpart
list disk
You should see
Disk 0 34 G bytes (This is your HD)
Disk 1 7656 M byte (This is your Stick, but would match your size)
select Disk 0
clean
create partition primary
select partition 1
active
format fs=ntfs (This will take loooong time, so just head on over to your xxx site again.)
assign
exit
Now you run chkdsk to check for faults again:
chkdsk
A) If no error, reboot and try FN+F3 to recover from the recovery disc.
If the recovery fails, you have to boot Vista installation again and do chkdsk to be sure the failed recovery haven't messed it all up again. (Mine didn't work)
B) If errors type:
format c: /p:1 this will reset every sector to 0 (back to the xxx again)
then
chkdsk /b /r /f
Hopefully you will get no errors.

Hi scott.
Haven't figured out how to get those peski Floppy dos tools to install on to an USB stick, they always want to go to A:

And anybody with knowledge of how to hide/unhide partitions in DOS/cmd, please scream out

hp usb storage tool - Will help make usb with dos tools
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=390003 hide/unhide partitions in DOS/cmd

Ok thanks for the HP tip.
I have seen Mr. riki0081's thread, but i wanted to stay in Vista dos if possible.
Mainly because i only have one USB Stick, secondly because I'm stubborn
Thanks

It's going to service.
It just wont stop making read/write errors, and now it wont even show up in BIOS any more.
Has the all to well known sound klik klik klonk......klik klik klonk......etc. etc. of a failed HD

error on dual boot vista xp

i've reduced the vista partition and want to install xp....but after the first reboot , there are a black screen with "error to load operative system". someone have tested a dual boot vista xp???
thx
problem solved....
after winxp 1° phase installation reinsert vista cd,repair your computer->command prompt->
Bootrec.exe /fixMBR
Bootrec.exe /fixBoot
restart vista
install EasyBCD at http://neosmart.net/dl.php?id=1
add bootloader entry for xp.
restart and select new winxp entry on bootloader,
continue xp installation!!!
yep, i'm doing dual boot since i've got the shift from day 1.
here's some tips:
never install both operating systems on the same partition. It will most likely crash both of them (more possibly the xp one).
When dualbooting you need the following things.
a windows installation disk and an external usb dvd driver.
a windows vista instalation disk.
a shift.
some 3-4 spare hours.
First you should have a working vista instalation (this will be one of the 2 os's you wanna put). All your settings and files will be unaffected.
you will need to partition the drive by whatever means in order to make an empty 4-5 gb partition, separated from the other one(s).
Next install windows xp using the external cd drive just as you would install it normally. Install it to that empty partition.
After you finish you will see that only the xp OS boots, no sign of vista.
Next boot the vista cd when you start the shift, then select "repair your computer", or stuff like that from the first menu that appears when installing vista (after the language and keyboard stuff). You should fix the bootloader, there should be an option related to that, maybe troubleshoot vista startup (or something similar). Next remove the cd after the repair is done and reboot from hard-disk.
Now only vista boots up. Boot to vista then download a program called easybcd. You may find it on google it's free. With this program you can acces the vista bootloader. You need to add an entry for your xp instalation in order to have it displayed at bootup. Find the "add entry" option (or similar) select windows xp, 2000, etc from one of the pull down menus, and you'll see that the drive letter containing the instalation will be greyed out (the selected drive is C. That's ok, altrough xp installed on another partition, it's bootloader and some files are still located on the C: drive. now tweak whatever you like with the easybcd program then save changes and restart.
You should have dual booting now.
err.. one more tip, when you shut down vista, just before you want to boot from cd and install xp (the begining of the procedure) use the shag controll and activate bluetooth, wlan and modem. This way when you install xp, it will detect them (at least bluetooth, wlan doesn't seem to work however), otherwise - naah.
aa, didn't saw your post. I was writting mine
Glad to see the problem solved.
Has anyone had any success with making a bootable USB stick with Vista on it?

Detailed guide for Rooting.

I have done this on a Windows 7 64-bit PC. If you have a Linux, run *.sh instead of *.bat
Required:
1. A formatted micro SD card.
2. Fully charged phone.
3. A windows PC.
4. Android SDK.
5. Backup tools to backup existing data on your Android phone.
Create GoldCard:
A GoldCard turns your device into a generic device, thereby allowing modifications like installing another firmware possible. There are different methods to create a GoldCard but I found this the easiest:
1. A formatted SD card is necessary for this. A GoldCard is nothing but a formatted SD card with modified CID. Insert the SD card in the phone and format the card (Settings -> SD Card & Phone Storage -> Unmount SD Card -> Format SD Card).
2. Download “Klutsch’s GoldCard creation tool” from here. Run this tool as administrator. (this tool is windows only)
3. Enable USB Debugging mode in your phone (Settings -> Applications -> Development -> USB Debugging) and connect the phone to your windows PC.
4. Click on “Get CID” Tab and copy the CID that is generated. In case you get any error, select MMC0.
5. Open the link “http://psas.revskills.de/?q=goldcard“, enter your email id and the CID. You will then get the GoldCard image to the mentioned email id.
6. Download the GoldCard image to PC, from the GoldCard creation tool, click on ‘load GoldCard.img’, select the image that you just downloaded and click on “Patch MMC”.
7. Voila, you now have your GoldCard. Please do not use this card for any other purpose till the rooting process is over and it’s time to downgrade the OS.
Remove the GoldCard and use the primary card till the GoldCard is needed. (not necessary)
Downgrade the OS:
Download the following packages before starting this process:
• Android SDK (copy the SDK to C:\ add C:\androidSDK\Tools to your windows path)
• hack4legendv5.zip
• RUU 1.31 for Legend
Connect your phone to the PC ‘charge only’ mode. copy the contents of hack4legendv5.zip to androidSDK/tools directory and then run the script crackin.bat The phone will reboot couple of times and there will be lot of errors shown in the terminal. In the end look for the line showing permissions for the file /dev/mtd/mtd0. It should look like this:
crwxrwxrwx 1 1001 2002 90, 0 Jul 19 16:19 /dev/mtd/mtd0
Click to collapse
This means that your phone is ready for OS downgrade.
Now, connect your phone to the PC in ‘charge-only’ mode and execute the file RUU_Legend_HTC_WWE_1.31.405.5_R_Radio_47.26.35.04_ 7.05.35.26L_release_126592_signed.exe and just follow the instructions and the phone will reboot to 1.31 version of firmware. And it’s time for Legend to get rooted. There will be a few errors but don’t get disheartened.
Root the Legend:
Time to use the GoldCard. Insert the GoldCard and connect the phone to the PC in ‘charge only’ mode.
1. Download the file r4-legend-root.zip from here. Unzip the file to a directory and cd to the directory.
2. Switch off your Legend, switch it back on in ‘fast boot’ mode (keep the back button pressed while switching the phone ON). When you see that the phone has booted into fast boot screen.
3. Connect the phone to the PC and run step1-windows.bat
4. After that is over, select RECOVERY option. Fastboot screen –> Boot loader -> recovery. You need to use phone’s volume rocker to move up/down the menu and power button to select the option. The phone screen should now show a phone with red caution sign.
5. From the terminal window, run step2-windows.bat. Once this step is completed, the phone will be back in recovery mode. From the options, select ‘wipe data’ and then select the option to update the ROM, select the file ‘rootedupdate.zip’ from SD card. The rooting process will now start and after few minutes, the phone will boot with rooted firmware.
Moderators and other experienced Members, I know my editing isn't perfect here 'cause I'm in a hurry but this is the guide I followed and I was rooted within 15 minutes. Feel free to edit (Mods) and suggest (Members). Umm... does this belong to the Development section?
Fantastic guide. Really great. I had half a mind to do one myself, no need now. This should help a lot of people. It might also be worth going through the other threads, and pulling out an FAQ with links to relevant posts. I'll help with that if you like.
Get this in the stickies!

Hmm, Windows? Haven't seen that for several years (thankfully) except on our house, but I can still manage to root...

Okay, if you have additional points, just write it down... I'll add it next time I edit it.
@BlaY0
I have only tested this on a Windows PC, but I'm sure it'll work on Linux too. Added it as a note before the guide. Thanks.
where do i dl "rootedupdate.zip" or when u do step 1 and step 2 it will be on card or what?

The scripts push it on there. That's why the download is so big...
Bump. Well... can someone have this moved to the development part.
Any way to root via OS X?
I'm getting this error when trying to get the CID in the gold card tool, what am I doing wrong?
------------------------
* daemon not running. starting it now *
* daemon started successfully *
------------------------
Could not locate CID in output
Im also getting the same error as tecchtalknews and have no idea what is causing it. ps im using a sand disk 2gb sd card that came with the phone, and yes usb debugging is on.
ahh never mind, i just had to sync it with htc sync before i used gold card tools
Does it work for 2.2 devices XD

im stuck on .
copy SDK and android SKD to C ... are you suggesting installing the complete SKD and then copying the folder to C instead of C/program files / Android SDK .?
and when double clicking crackin.bat . the terminal shows up for about 4 seconds then disappears and nothing happens on my phone ..
help first time rooter ..
Cheers
ok so my problem is that i click "crackin.bat" my phone reboots several times, but them the cmd closes before i can see if it's "crwxrwxrwx 1 1001 2002 90, 0 Jul 19 16:19 /dev/mtd/mtd0" or not.. however i think it should be because i've already gotten the other, wrong "cr---w--" (or something) and i think i might be doing it right this time, but after that when i go with the "RUU_Legend_HTC_WWE_1.31.405.5_R_Radio_47.26.35.04_ 7.05.35.26L_release_126592_signed.exe" it gives me error "(-5001 : 0x80070002)" and nothing happens .. please help cuz i've whiped all the data to my phone although i had a lot of stuff and i'm really looking forward to this :/ newb rooter, sry :?
am also having the same problem

Reinstall Vista on Shift

Hi there,
I just bought my HTC Shift. I really like it. However, I would like to reinstall Windows Vista because an important application that I need will not install. I heard that there are problems with wifi/bt and drivers in general when using XP or Windows 7.
Since I am happy with how it runs on Vista I would simply like to reinstall. The problem is that I bought the device from a 3rd party without any CDs or manuals. Is there a hidden partition that contains the Vista kit with drivers? Or how exactly does this work?
Thank you.

Hi stargatesg1,
If the partition is not damaged you can do a Vista system recovery as follows:
Hard Disk Recovery
In case of system failure, Windows Vista® can be recovered to the hard disk by running the hard disk recovery utility. Before starting this utility, make sure to back up important data and files.
To run the hard disk recovery utility
1. Shut down the Mobile Computer and then power it on again.
2. At the start of the boot-up process, immediately press F3 to run the hard disk recovery utility.
3. You will then see the following screen:
Recovery process is starting .....The process will delete all data on the hard drive.Do you want to terminate the process? (Y/N)
104 Securing and Managing the Mobile Computer
Press N to continue with the hard disk recovery process. If you press Y, the hard disk recovery utility is terminated.
4. The next message prompts you whether or not to rebuild the MBR (Master Boot Record) data:
Recovery process is starting .....The process will delete all data on the hard drive.Do you want to terminate the process? (Y/N) NDo you want to rebuild the MBR (Master Boot Record) data? (Y/N)
If, aside from drive C, you have created other partitions in the hard disk and you want to keep them, press N. If you press Y, your partitions will be deleted.
5. A confirmation message then prompts you whether or not to continue. Press Y to start the hard disk recovery process. If you press N, the hard disk recovery utility is terminated.
6. After the recovery process is complete, slide and hold the POWER/HOLD switch for about four seconds to shut down the Mobile Computer.
Before overwrighting the current OS (if different from Vista), I would save an image of it using a dedicated freeware e.g. Macrium Reflect Free in order to put it back when needed because Shift with Vista is running very very slow. As far as I know there are very little problems with XP or Windows 7, I would rather install one of them than Vista.
Good luck!
Since I am going to loose all data it wouldn't hurt to try a different OS as well. If I install XP/7 will I still be able to recover Vista in the same way with hard disk recover utility?
Mersi
Yes, for sure, if not touching the Vista recovery partition (which it doesn't get written during the normal installation process).

Disks not auto booting with Chameleon/How can I allow disks to show as a boot option?

I've just burnt Windows 8 developer preview on a dvd to add a 3rd partition to my Acer 5740g. Well I didn't realize this until now, but my computer isn't automatically reading disks while I have Chameleon bootloader installed. My bios is set to read the CD first, then the HDD.
I put the Windows 8 CD in, it took a few seconds to read and then went to Chameleon. The CD is not an option to boot from, it only shows my 2 partitions.
I tried putting the iAtkos l2 CD in and it DID read that instead of going to my HDD's chameleon.
I then tested it by putting in my retail Windows 7 disk and it reads, but hangs at a black screen with a blinking underscore line at the top left.
Is there a way to show my inserted CD as one of my boot options through chameleon, or another option to fix this?
If you already have windows 7 installed.
Mount the ISO using magicdisc or similar.
Then run setup.
You'll be able to do a clean install on the third partition since its not being used.

Question Cant install fresh copy of xp

So I had this old ass desktop donated to me and the hdd was filled with so much crap I couldn't even install rufus to burn an xp iso to a USB drive. So I finally get to my PC, which is not easy to get over to use, and burn an a supposed untouched xp iso with sp3. So I boot up from USB everything seems to be going smoothly I format the entire drive because there were a few partitions on the hdd I figured I didn't need all that crap, if I remember back to around 2003 multiple partitions weren't needed to install xp. Anyways the drive formats fine, I hit install, and run out the door to handle a few errands as I was late meeting with a friend. I get home and I can't remember the exact error it threw at me when I walked in the door but basically I started a reinstall. Except now, everything from my USB drive loads normally but before the installation screee. Actually starts up it tells me that there is no valid xp operating installed on the hd and that I need to insert a windows xp cd to verify that my installation is legit or something like that. So it's either f3 to quit or enter to continue. I hit enter hoping it will read from my USB but that didn't work. So I'm a little stuck here because the only PC I have that can burn cd or DVDs is this desktop.my laptop doesn't have a rw drive.

Your assumption that multiple partitions are not required is incorrect. Windows requires an MBR parition that occupies the first 512 bytes of your hard disk. This acts as a loader to start Windows.
You should be able to simply remove all partitions on the drive when you start the Windows installation process; Windows will then automatically configure the necessary partitions for you. This article should provide the information you need.
Also, don't forget to enable legacy boot in your BIOS, assuming the BIOS supports UEFI.
Yes, I am aware of the mbr but like you said the installation media should have no problem creating that after formatting the whole drive and starting install. I'll check the bios settings thanks for the tip. I'm leaning towards running one of the android os compatible with x86 arch. Anyone have any experience with those. I have bliss and prime downloading right now.
*EDIT*
I turned USB legacy mode from auto to enabled but no dice. I would think that once I hit enter it would recognize the USB I have plugged in as the CD ROM. What if I disabled the CD ROM drive for the time being?
