All I want to do is root this thing, but no matter what I've tried it just doesn't want to work. Has anyone actually managed to root this?

I've done it. I used the newest version of Kingroot from the Google Playstore (ver 4.8 at the time of this writing) If I recall correctly I *think* Kingroot may have shown an issue getting root access. However, after rebooting the device the rooting process did work. I was able to verify it by using root checker (basic version). After I had root I replaced Kingroot with SuperSU and once again verified using root checker. Still rooted... Be careful to take one step at a time. If you can reply with specifics and what order you did them in I might be able to help.

hi. i updated my phone to 2.3.4 (sys 4.5.91 us) and i cannot get my root back. im pretty new to root but i do not want anything but root. not unlock, not new rom, not anything except root.
i had the latest version of Android and used Gingerbreak and i was extremely happy as it was so easy for me to do. i had root and that's all i wanted. but now... i updated to 2.3.4 and i did not unroot before this (maybe this is my problem) but my phone is fine, everything runs great. but i cannot root it. i used this walk-through http://www.atrixforums.com/forum/motorola-atrix-hacks/4414-how-root-motorola-atrix-all-versions-including-stock-locked-2-3-4-a.html and finished it all. everything went through and i still don't have root.
i have done it 3 times now and successfully competed the steps. i still have no root. can someone direct me or walk me through another way of rooting or by chance giving me advice on what to do so i can get root? im not a scientist and i know it doesn't take one...but all i know is i just cant get my phone rooted and want it rooted badly.
someone please help me. i searched all over the forums and keep finding the steps i followed and then also found unlock steps(something i do not want to do)
all i want is root. please keep that in mind.

I used this method on my OTA gingerbread.
At first, it gave me errors and pretty much wouldn't work past command line, but in reality, Superuser was installed and I was able to launch it.
Do you have Superuser in your app drawer?
yes i do have super user. and i am able to launch it. but it does not unlock anything.
i got no errors. i did everything correctly and still i dont have root access. maybe im missing something?? i try to run Titanium backup and it said no root access. said the same thing with Root explorer.
superuser runs... but it doesnt have anything unlocked. i try to update superuser and it wont let me.

hmm, you can try going to manage apps and clearing superuser's data, and then maybe attempt the process again.
I had to clear data to get superuser to do anything at all when I rooted.
i read that before i attempted it the third time. i cleared data then completed the steps and still... my superuser runs but apparently i do not have root access.
superuser does not ask if i want to allow for root access for any programs like TB or Root Explorer as it should.

and i meant that i had read about that before attempting the entire process for the third time. i read on another post that someone had it installed already and had to clear the data so... i did that before my third attempt.

I tried searching but couldn't find anything related...
I was rooted before I upgraded to 4.5.141. I saw a post of someone saying they used an app called rootkeeper to temporarily disable root, installed the update, then used rootkeeper to reroot. I tried that, but now none of the apps that require root access are working properly. Is there a way to remove root from my phone? I want to remove it so I can root using the other method. thanks
And can this be done without flashing back to factory? I don't want to lose my phone's configuration
Are you sure you are rooted right now?
Try Root Checker to make sure.
i too am in the same boat with you. I ran the root checker and it confirms i'm SOL.
I just want my wifi tether back.
I don't really even remember how i rooted last summer. guess it's back to the research

I followed the instructions in the last post, but got stuck on a certain step... something about not enough memory. I ended up flashing the sbf and retried to root process. Working fine now. Thanks to all

Hey all OUYAins!
So recently I updated my OUYA to Chickcharney and lost root access *cue crying*
I tried installing RootMyOuya1.1 by WonderEkin but it didn't install. So I snooped around for different rooting methods such as ReRoot script by Eldon McGuiness (You can take a look at his script here).
The method that worked perfectly fine for me was to download a piece of software called Kingo (here). Simply download and install it and connect your OUYA to your computer via USB and click Start Root. Wait for the software to root your OUYA and it will eventually reboot. You should now have SuperSU installed with root access!
I hope this thread helps anyone having difficulty with getting root access on Chickcharney!
I'm assuming the device needs to already have been rooted prior to trying Kingo ROOT? I just got my system on Thursday and since I'm new it forced me to download the Chickcharney update and I can't figure out what the best way is to root my OUYA.
i just got one on friday and the same thing it updated automatically
i use this to root my system it still works
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2350900
my ouya was rooted before the update. yesterday I tried Kingo and it said "already rooted", but I had no root permission. So I clicked "root again" and after a minute or so my ouya was rooted again properly.
Thanks Sn0wdune

I tried that to root it but it said it couldn't find the Ouya. I'm running the latest update Chickcharney on mine. Do I need to wipe it to run the root?

That's odd. Are you sure you have your OUYA connected via USB properly and the drivers are correctly installed?

The driver's wouldn't install because I had to turn off driver signing. I got it working after that with Ouya Toolbox root... even though it was crashing part way through. I had to run the TEST version of Ouya Toolbox and just forced the root and I guess it was fine because it appears to be rooted.
MOD EDIT @gregbradley
Also, users should be aware that Kingo root sends your IMEI to an unknown IP address in china during the root process, you have been warned. For more information read the whole OP here
Getting ROOT rights to Android 5.0 Lollipop (KingRoot) It is not my work. Taken from a russian forum.
1.Download and install latest version of Kingroot to phone.
2.Run the application and get the Root. Important - do not restart the device, because it can lead to failure in obtaining Root.
3.Enable "USB debugging" and "unknown sources".
4.Install the latest version from the PC XZDualRecovery to get full access to reading and writing to the section System (connect your phone to a PC via a cable, run the install.bat to select a number " 1 "on the screen to confirm a request for superuser)
5.Phone will reboot automatically to recovery. Install supersu.
6.Boot
Files to root.

Well, I couldnt resist. I've now got a working root with SuperSU, and have removed all I can find of the KingRoot app.
So far, seems to be working well.

Yes I believe so. I have the Kinguser icon in my app draw, but It wont open. I deleted all files associated with King via ES Root Explorer, and cannot find anything.
I still wouldn't recommend anyone else doing this, god knows what information was sent to China upon installing it, but I really wanted root.

I tried that, it needs internet connectivity. However, the reason I allowed this was I understand that this root is based on a Ping exploit, which would need internet connecivity to work.
I figured the risk werent THAT high for me. I dont re-use passwords and no bank details stored on my phone.
Can confirm this method works.
You might want to try going in Airplane mode if you're paranoid for the Chinese. In any case, Kingroot + XZDR + SuperSU 2.49 works perfectly.
It works for me I can confirm now.I have root on lollipop locked bootloader so nice haha ? thanks

Don't think so, no. Not without root anyway.
Kingroot might work but it's a horrible app that isn't worth the trouble it creates. If Kingroot works on this phone then you can probably install a custom recovery via something like Flashify or the TWRP app. The problem with Kingroot is that it's basically malware. It installs adware on your phone and won't give root access to anything that interferes with its functioning like Adaway or an alternate root app. It also sends God only knows what data from your phone to China. You are honestly better off not being rooted at all than using Kingroot. There are instructions for rooting with Kingroot and then switching root to SU but unless the instructions are extremely up to date they will not work. Kingroot is updated with the specific purpose of preventing you from being able to do anything that reduces the power Kingroot has over your phone. It can be uninstalled but the app makes certain you completely lose root functions before that happens.

You can't. You need to unlock the bootloader if this phone and this requires a PC
