Root help, i'm confused!

Hi there everyone,
I want to root my Desire HD, but I don't want to install any custom roms, radios, etc. I only want to root my HD so I can install apps that require root. I see no advantage in installing any custom ROMs, so I want to leave that alone.
What's the best way to go about this? I've found this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834427. Do I need to do anything else, except what is in this guide? I'm terrified of bricking my phone!
Could I brick my device if I made a mistake with the above guide, or S-OFF?

Sorry for the question (no doubt it's been asked before), I've rooted my old HTC Hero before, found that easy, but this I'm confused!

But after some further reading I discovered this is actually a much more difficult method of rooting (maybe because it's older?).

After I've ran that step - do I have permroot and I don't need to do anything else? I only want root, not custom ROM's.
I'm scared of doing the permroot, sounds like I'll break my phone if I even attempt it! Is there any way to ensure it will work?

Yeh you will be perma rooted if you follow the steps. About ensuring it will work, this is something I am now looking into myself. I'm getting the impression that it's possible to create a copy of the stock rom even without the perma root and using that to do a recovery in the event of a root failure. Though I would have thought perma root would have been needed to do a recovery in the first place....
I've got a thread below yours where I'm still trying to get a clear answer as to how to do all that. If I find out I'll let u know =P

By "if you follow the steps" - do you mean I only have to follow step 1 for perm root? Or more than that?

And also - if it fails, the stock WWE RUU can be flashed to restore the phone, can't it?

Go all way through these steps from 1.1 to 1.6. Once you've done 1.6 your phone should be rooted. Just download the terminal emulator from the market and do that last thing that is mentioned to test the perma rooting. If that works then your good.
Oh just so you know the temp root option in Visionary is apparently completely safe and won't harm nothing because it makes no changes to the system partition.
Not sure about the WWE RUU. I'm not sure it will be compatible with your current ROM (Only thing I do know is that if it's older then your current it won't work). Don't know how to flash it either tbh, that's something I ain't found out yet =P

Rooted Then Updated Then Lost Root??

I recently rooted my atrix with superoneclick then i accidently updated then i belive i still had my root until i went to install a 3d theme then my phone crashed and wouldnt get past the at&t screen so i had to erase everything now on my phone i still have "super user" in my app draw but i cannot side load apps did i lose my root? what do i have to do to sideload apps again ? and i guess re root my phone

If you updated, you mean 4.1.57, this is what I did to re-root when I lost mine after updating and SuperOneClick wouldn't work.

Yeap, that's exactly what I did, but in that same thread, I think someone else outlined using aRoot to go over SuperOneClick.

Yes you may safely run aroot over superoneclick. Aroot is the recommended method because it cleans up a lot of things Superroneclick does.

Yup the aRoot script is used in the GladiAtrix and possibly the GingerBlur rom as well. Either way. SOC is crap, not meant for atrix anyway. aRoot was written specifically for the Atrix. If you want to update to 4.1.57 read through the retain root thread over in atrix development.

This has been explained many times. updating kills root, even though you still have superuser installed. to retain root you need to use the script in the development section when updating from 1.26 to 1.57. flash back to 1.26 and try again.

[Q] i Cannot root again...( since V. 2.3.4)

hi. i updated my phone to 2.3.4 (sys 4.5.91 us) and i cannot get my root back. im pretty new to root but i do not want anything but root. not unlock, not new rom, not anything except root.
i had the latest version of Android and used Gingerbreak and i was extremely happy as it was so easy for me to do. i had root and that's all i wanted. but now... i updated to 2.3.4 and i did not unroot before this (maybe this is my problem) but my phone is fine, everything runs great. but i cannot root it. i used this walk-through http://www.atrixforums.com/forum/motorola-atrix-hacks/4414-how-root-motorola-atrix-all-versions-including-stock-locked-2-3-4-a.html and finished it all. everything went through and i still don't have root.

someone please help me. i searched all over the forums and keep finding the steps i followed and then also found unlock steps(something i do not want to do)

I used this method on my OTA gingerbread.
At first, it gave me errors and pretty much wouldn't work past command line, but in reality, Superuser was installed and I was able to launch it.
Do you have Superuser in your app drawer?

yes i do have super user. and i am able to launch it. but it does not unlock anything.
i got no errors. i did everything correctly and still i dont have root access. maybe im missing something?? i try to run Titanium backup and it said no root access. said the same thing with Root explorer.
superuser runs... but it doesnt have anything unlocked. i try to update superuser and it wont let me.

hmm, you can try going to manage apps and clearing superuser's data, and then maybe attempt the process again.
I had to clear data to get superuser to do anything at all when I rooted.

i read that before i attempted it the third time. i cleared data then completed the steps and still... my superuser runs but apparently i do not have root access.
superuser does not ask if i want to allow for root access for any programs like TB or Root Explorer as it should.

and i meant that i had read about that before attempting the entire process for the third time. i read on another post that someone had it installed already and had to clear the data so... i did that before my third attempt.
still no root!

Trouble rooting my Razr M, please help!!

Ok so I have followed the root method of "djrbliss" to the letter, every time I attempt the root it says "exploit failed", "cleaning up" and then "successful" then the phone reboots, I check to make sure it has rooted properly with one of the root checker apps and it says the phone doesn't have root access. So I have tried this multiple times taking suggestions from other threads and users such as ( clearing cache and doing a factory reset, and replacing the su and superuser files with the ones from the other cite) I was super jacked to root my new razr m but now I am not so sure, please help out guys.

It appears that you are on the most recent update, which, by itself is not rootable. However, there has been a work around achieved. I think it involves using RSD to go back to the previous version, rooting it, protecting root with Voodoo, reflashing the most current update, then restoring root via Voodoo. Easy 2 click root: How I got to 4.2.2 Camera Update/Rooted and WP permanently Off

Are the root methods too complicated/risky for you? This is a simple solution.
Start with: original droid maxx software (12.7.7 i believe) on Verizon
1. Install motoroot 1.0 (JCase's first root method from original development section), run it, and click root (that's click #1). Make sure everything's working, reboot a few times, use rootchecker to make sure you've got root. (note you won't have write protection off and there'll be a 10-15 sec delay after booting up before you have root). But hey, it's 1 click.
2. Take 1st Verizon OTA to the 4.2.2 with camera update (12.15.15 i believe). Root should survive. Check that it did with root checker.
3. Install the write protection no more from the moto x original development section on your computer. download android-sdk and make sure adb is working, make sure fastboot is working. connect your phone to your computer and run the "write protectoin no more" app on your computer (that's click #2).
That's it. Now I have write protection permanently off, and I have root. I didn't have to use cydia impactor and mess with a tricky update to 4.4 which if it doesn't work I couldn't go back to a rooted phone. I never had to fxz anything or restore anything to stock, or lose any of my data. I didn't have to pay a dime or give someone on ebay all my phone info.
Sure I'd like to have 4.4, but pretty happy with where I am and how easily I got here. And I've read a lot of people say "the root methods are too complicated" --- well this is pretty easy cause you're just using 2 packaged apps.
I've gotten a lot from this forum, and just thought I'd share. Please don't flame. I feel like this is the best compromise of features:effort for me.

if i could unlock it when i had gotten it in august, sure. but it's too much effort to start over at this point. i have everything set up perfectly. never had to start over. also didn't want to pay for it and send my info to some stranger on the internet. anyway, moot point. good for you, but that option's not available for most people.

So does this work when your already updated to 4.4?

I didn't rewrite it. No where are there instructions for getting root AND write protection off on the 4.2.2 camera update without 1 using command line commands AND 2 that network based program (called Cydia compactor I think). There's none of those complications here. Most people don't even realize 1 click root survives the camera update.
But you are right as to kit kat. I thought my title was clear that this is for jellybean though.

I have rooted my phone when i am in 12.7.7, then i took the OTA update 12.15.15, now my device is in a boot loop, it boots normally and after a few seconds it will reboot and it goes over and over again.
any thoughts on this and should I use RSDLite to flash it to either 12.7.7 / 12.15.15???

which method did you use to root it? what system stuff did you change after rooting it?
a lot of people had bootloops after taking an OTA because they did the root method that had replaced their stock recovery with a write protect off mode. so in effect, they were having bootloops because they didn't have the recovery, not because they had root. it their case, there was an easy solution of just flashing a recovery. unfortunately i don't know the details of how to do that off the top of my head.'
in any case, rsd'ing to either of those software versions will likely fix all problems.
i rooted as i described with motoroot 1.0, which didn't affect my recovery and was easy to OTA without problems.

I used the PwnMyMoto here to root, i forgot that this method will replace / remove the stock recovery.
With a minute of panic and some google search, I'd managed to use RSD lite to flash the 12.15.15 FXZ and now my phone is back in business but kinda lost root.
Right now I am looking into the RockMyMoto method here and see if it can help me to gain root.

glad you got your phone back in order, might want to check out slapmymoto (which is the path to rooted kit kat and involves running rockmymoto on the way) while you're at it

Not sure about the battery life on kitkat of the MAXX right now, so i will stick with 4.2.2 first and do a little research.
Anyway, thanks for the reply and I've gained root on 4.2.2 (12.15.15) using RockMyMoto:laugh:
