I fulfilled my quest to get a data only plan on the Atrix by buying an AT&T mifi and just putting the SIM card in my atrix. This required creating a new APN for isp.cingular, and for about 4 months this worked great with a pure voip setup.
A few days ago something happened. My Atrix seems to be stuck on EDGE. It will no longer connect to HSPA in the same locations that it used to be H+ 24 hours a day.
The basics have been covered: power cycling, airplane mode cycling. No use. The SIM itself seems okay since I tried putting it back in the mifi unit, and it got 3G like normal. That also rules out a tower problem.
Anyone have any ideas? I feel like an ass now since I bought the mifi on contract.
You can call At&t and switch it to a voice plan with an hspa data plan so you can use your atrix.
Kind of admitting defeat though.

Perhaps try flashing a different radio on the atrix. It could be an Incompatibility issue ? Worth a shot I would say

So, I tried flashing different radios. No luck. After that I thought maybe some fresh ROMs might do it some good. No luck on Alien, and then I installed CM7 and noticed something interesting. The "Use only 2g networks" setting is stuck on. I turn it off, go back, and soon as I look again it's on. Is there something special you have to do to save it, or could this be pointing to an underlying problem?

Nothing special is needed to save it. It could be throttling by AT&T do to your imei being that of an Atrix vs a mifi.

I suspect att has caught you with imei check and you should try with other sim card.
but i suspect it may not work.
why not use it with MiFi only?

The problem with the mifi is its terrible battery life. It only gets 4 hours in hotspot mode. If it could last as long as my phone, I wouldn't even mind carrying around two devices, but it doesn't.
Anyway, great news. After listening to everyone's suggestions I took the SIM out of my phone and noticed that I was then able to properly disable "Use only 2G networks". So, I ordered a new AT&T SIM online, called and had it activated, and now 3G and H are working properly again. And along the way I fell in love with CyanogenMod.
I expect I'll probably have to repeat this process every few months if they continue to slap down my SIM cards, but I consider it worth it for not having to pay for a voice/text plan. I am still on contract, but to anyone who is considering doing something like me, T-mobile recently started offering a $30 a month plan that gets you 5 GB of data, 100 minutes, and unlimited text, and it's for phones! The only hitch is that it's a month by month thing (no contract) and it's promotional, so who knows when they'll decide to cut it. But personally, I'm hoping it's a sign that carriers are finally moving in the right direction.

I setup a google voice enabled PBX with pbxes.org, back when they let you make them for free. I know for a while they stopped doing that; not sure what the current policy is.
Basically the pbx pretends to be a google talk client, so when someone calls my google voice number it goes to the pbx. Then I have an extension on the pbx that I register on my phone with the native android SIP client, which on CM7 works like a dream. Seriously far smoother and more reliable than sipdroid or csipsimple.
Oh and this does work for outgoing too, but if you're using a solution that doesn't (like google voice -> sipgate/ipkall -> pbxes.org), you can get around it with an app called Google Voice Callback. And it's still all free.

In 2.3 they added SIP calling to the android OS. It's not an app. Of course, in stock android it only works on wifi. Cyanogen unlocks its true potential by letting you use it on cellular too.
In my experience, on stock ROM SIP is an epic fail, both native and via apps (tried acrobits, sipdroid, csipsimple, sipagent). There is something funny about moto's audio routing stack, its not a network or settings issue.
Same settings and SIP providers - yes I tried two lol - , same apps, same network i.e. home Wifi, 100% perfect with nexus one. So I'm sure its Atrix specific. This happened on both stock 2.2 and 2.3 AT&T.
Custom ROM fixes this, CM7 native SIP works perfectly.
Can't remember for other ROMs, but they seemed to get apps working if not native SIP.
YMMV
I have a very strange issue on ATT, no one else seems to have:
first, I got a new micro SIM and I'm on the correct 4g plan (I generated an IMEI for an ATRIX 4g to give to ATT).
Problem:
About 2 to 10 minutes into a call the person the other end looses the ability to hear me. but I can hear them. so I hang up. at this point ANY calls in or outbound are silent in both directions. Bluetooth, Speakerphone or headset, same results. and at this point wifi and cellular signal bars are now gray. Reboot and the phone works again.
Does anyone have any ideas????? I may need to send the phone back. Do you think ATT has something provisioned wrong???
update: I did a factory restore, I still have the problem. I have a bad feeling it's something to do with ATT / Nexus 4 / fake IMEI ??? and this happens using either popular Nexus4 ATT APNs.
OH and another update... today when this happened I noticed my Ford's Sync system flashed "In Privacy..." the rest was cut off... then silence!!!! WTF ?!?!??!?!?!? In Privacy Mode?!?!?!

Yes, I got the from the Play store. Why? do you theorize that someone else had it provisioned?
I'm on my second sim card and I still have the call silence issue. I think I need to return the phone.
Any other thoughts??

Is anyone having issues getting the visual voicemail set up? Att is telling me they are having connection time outs with the voicemail. I've had everything reset a few times and it's still not working. Just curious
Haven't had an issue. Worked right out of the box.
@OP,
Yes I can't get mine VVM to work either. I actually just used my sim from my iPhone and yet when i try to setup VVM it tells me I don't have that on my plan. I swear AT&T can really be a PIA. So I will probably need to contact CS.
Mine doesn't work but I didn't have it on my plan before ordering this phone.
I did the same thing with my iPhone Sim. Maybe that's the problem.
I have the S7 (trying to get it exchanged for the Edge but no Best Buy's have them in my area right now); picked it up Tuesday at Best Buy and used the SIM card that came with it. Called Tech Support and worked with the girl for almost an hour before she sent an escalated ticket to the next level of tech support. She thought maybe because the official launch was today (3/11) that might be why it wasn't working Tuesday. I have a text message to call AT&T just haven't had the time but after just checking now, it still won't set up. I even had my voice mail profile blown out and had to recreate it from scratch with tech support on the phone and it still made not difference. Going to give it a few more days and then I might be taking it back to Best Buy for el-refund-o. Love the phone other than that. Just my two cents, take it for what it's worth. Have a great evening everyone.
I disabled that as soon as I opened the box. Google voice works like a charm.

If you used an iPhone SIM it will soft-brick Visual Voicemail, or at least it did for me. I had to go to AT&T and swap my SIM card out with a newly provisioned one. Then I had to call tech support and have them wipe my voicemail settings. After all that I was then able to setup VVM as expected. It works great now.
Guess I need to call again. I went to the store and got a new Sim card and the guy there reset my password only I suppose. So now it doesn't say my account doesn't have vvm it just says unable to set up

Darn Skippy. Iphones have the WiFi calling enabled and it's not compatible with the Samsungs and that was the issue after Sim change. Or so 611 lady said!

Same happened to me. I had to have them wipe all my VM settings, including any custom greetings that I had. Once the VM system was wiped it let me setup VVM without any hiccups. Good luck!
No problems here. Coming from other androids though, using same sim.
Will Sprint be able to activate my phone on their network or should I flash a factory image first?
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
Highly suggested that you should flash the factory image first before calling Sprint. Just provide them your MEID (*#06#) and you're good to go!
OK. Was hoping not to have to reset everything but I think you're right. Probably best.
Or you could try to go to sprint.com/activate. Probably if it's a different carrier, it'll have some setbacks for SIM support. If none of these works, try visiting your nearest Sprint store.
Why not just try to activate the phone with Pure Nexus installed? It will probably work and if it doesn't you can always go back to stock and reactivate. You are using your own phone, not Sprints, so I don't see the downside in trying to activate the phone as is.
I may try that. I know back in the day I couldn't get a phone activated because I had a custom ROM on it. For some reason it wouldn't work.

Well you can't port your phone to another carrier from Google Fi on the weekend. The "Account Specialist" that needs to release the device from the Fi network only works on weekdays.
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
Hey were you able to successfully port your phone over?
I just attempted to port from Project Fi to Sprint as well, but because Fi uses the Sprint network they were at first unable to activate the service. I had to first port my number to a Google Voice account, unlock the number from Google Voice to enable another carrier to port it out, then call Project Fi to have them deregister the phone from their network. After all this Sprint was finally able to port and activate my phone, but I'm now only getting 3G and no LTE.
I have read that some have had to do a full factory reset of the phone in order to get LTE to work, but I'm wondering if there's a less drastic method.
Yup. Long time ago but thanks!
Did you have to factory reset the phone or jump through any other hoops to get it to work?
I factory reset it, ported the number to Google Voice, waited about 48 hours until the phone ESN was released and cleared, then was able to transfer the number to Sprint and activate the phone. If I remember right, since my wife had a Sprint account, they let me use a loaner phone.
Gotcha, guess I'll do the same. Thanks for the reply!
Anytime! Enjoy Sprint! I know I do.
One issue you may run into is Sprint keeps 2 device databses with MEID / IMEI numbers. One for PrePaid and one for PostPaid. You will need to be removed from the PrePaid one (GoogleFi) before you can get activated on Sprint PostPaid.
To report back, I just completed a factory reset on my phone and am now connecting to LTE.
Hello,
I know this has been touched on before but I have not seen anything recent about it and I just got this phone today and I have no incoming SMS. I have everything that uses data working fine (email, etc), and outgoing SMS, and incoming and outgoing calls are fine, but I am not getting ANY INCOMING SMS.
Used the SIM from the Google Pixel 2 XL that I had before this phone, went to the Verizon store, they put the OP 8 on my account with the correct IMEI from SIM slot 1 and it was able to pull my number over and everything else was working including 4g, but incoming SMS was/is not working.
Does anybody know why this is still going on, and how to fix it. Do I need to get a new SIM from a VZW corporate store? Do I need to tell them anything special like CDMA-less provisioning, and if so, do I tell the store employee that, or do I have to call tech support?
Also just so you know I also tried another sim from another phone number on my account and it also does not receive incoming SMS, everything else works fine on that sim and number also.
Thanks guys, really don't want to have to take this phone back!
I had the exact same problem with my one+ pro on Verizon as well. I ended up going back to a corporate store and they just gave me a new sim card with a 5g logo on it and all seems to be well again. I can finally receive text messages again.
You need them to put CDMA-LESS on your account. It basically makes all your SMS and not just voice, etc to go across LTE instead of defaulting back to CDMA for incoming txt messages. Once you do that, BOOM, it'll work. I've had more success chatting with support than going to the stores to get it done. If the person you're talking to doesn't understand CDMA less, disconnect and try again.
Hey everybody, just wanted to let you know that I got it figured out by calling support and getting someone who knew what CDMAless was and they provisioned that and it works now. Although what is weird is that it only works with googles messaging app, not the default app.

I spent at least an hour on the phone with two levels of Verizon support trying to resolve the problem of not receiving texts. Verizon supports has to add the "CDMA-less" tag to your account and device. After this is done, the phone and texts work flawlessly.

I just went through all of this with Verizon. Because of the pandemic getting through to customer support is quite difficult. The only way I can get through was with Facebook messenger, and the link that they sent so I could verify my account was broken. Finally they called me and it took a whole 10 seconds to fix this. Too bad it took 2 days to get ahold of somebody so I can get it fixed..........

I just tried this, and the person claimed they had added it, but it definitely did NOT work, at least not while I had the 4G SIM installed. However, my OnePlus 8 5G UW had come with a new Verizon 5G SIM in the box, so we had them activate that new 5G SIM, at which point yes, everything started working. So Verizon really wants you to switch to a 5G SIM.

Big red must have changed tactics. I had this problem last September I think it was, it took a couple of phone calls to Verizon but they added CDMA less to my account and then they said they had to send some data to my phone or reactivated or something like that, but anyway I have not had this problem since then.
