Laggy phone after few minutes of use - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi! Im just wondering if I have bad phone or it is fine? My phone starts lagging after few minutes of use (when it gets warmer). It is not bad, but everything is launching slower and I see more FPS drops in animations.. Thank you..

I think you know already the answer to that

Yea, but in terms of throttling, this is the worst phone I ever had. And I had many phones.. Im little bit disappointed by its performance..

Overheating - Any Hints

From time to time (signal strength low, graphic intensive game, or just being too hot in general) my Incredible gets too hot, and, as a result, it reboots. When it reboots under heat, it may reboot a few times in a row, before booting up.
I know some people have resorted to the undervolt; are there any less intrusive ideas to keep the phone from overheating?

Maybe yours is messed, call verizon support think its *611, then talk to them about it, they prob send you a new phone, well new as in refurbed replacement.
Why not undervolt with a hydra kernal. Will also oc it and give you a boost in speed if that one will work for you. I dunno just saying
I may
I may just do that, but would like to get FroYo on the phone and then see what Kernels work with it. I have no intention of sending it back in for a refurb because it doesn't happen that often and I certainly know a refurb may have far more issues. I am also trying to remember if it happened less with my 2150mah (I went back to my 1750).
Thanks!!

Overheating

This thing gets hot! Just been configuring launcher pro which took around 5 minutes and wasn't data intensive and the back of the phone is really hot. So much that I can smell the plastic heating up! The battery drained real fast during the process too.
Anyone else experiencing this ?
Well that doesn't sound good! I haven't had anything like that. Have you checked the power intake?

Mine got really hot the first day I used it (27/4)...I was just checking out features and installing a few apps. I rebooted it after the battery was fully charged and it's been fine ever since.

I have the exact same problem, it happens especially when I play any games or intensive appliaction. The battery drains and it gets hot next to the camera, I suspect this is where the cpu lives. Do you think its because its rooted? because I rooted it as soon as I got it so I dont know what it was like before.
And as I am away from the uk for the next six weeks I cant even send it back to O2
No nothing to do with root, mine was same before and after, pretty normal to get hot on some demanding apps.

And i thought i was alone...
It gets really hot sometimes though, not to the extent of burnt plastic smell but it gets pretty uncomfortable touching around lens at the back.
I've been going through this this morning. It seems that the CPU loves to go up to 1.2GHz even if it doesn't need to be that high (and it stays there). Also there I've also been noticing through ADB shell that their are a few niggles. For example the wi-fi sharing process can start without even being activated.
For example this was a ADB shell top taken while running Cordy downclocked to 800MHz in setcpu. The phone was a tiny bit warm but only by the camera (where the CPU is). Basically, this just shows that if you are playing a game, nothing else is going on so the CPU shouldn't be going up to 1200MHz. And it plays the same as when it isn't underclocked.
I'm currently assisting Pulser with investigating this until he gets his SGS2.

My phone gets very hot at time too...
I also noticed wifi sharing starting up by itself. Yesterday it started by itself and used 10% battery usage even though I had wifi switched off the entire time..

Do you have root and Titanium/MyBackup Pro?
If you do, freeze anything that mentions wifi sharing, unless you are going to use wifi hotspot and kies air a lot.

My phone got so hot that it shut itself down!
since that i have done a complete reset of the phone and started from scratch again....100% better.
The problem as i see it is with all the 'tinkering' that we users do. All the additional launchers etc and widgets that you add really seem to mess the phone up!
My advice is keep the phone as samsung intended it...or at least change very little. You will see far improved battery life and none of the over heating problems.
Just my opinion but its worked for me.

that's just not true.
Mine gets hot aswell .. it's random sometimes but usualy with playing games etc. I suspect it has something to do with the samsung drivers/software and not our tinkering.
Bugs bugs bugs...
Mine also gets fairly hot, which might be a little uncomfortable - but that's the sacrifice you make when you get such a high powered device in such a small space.
Well, amount of apps/tinkering/etc has nothing to do with the phone getting got UNLESS an installed app in messing something up.I have heard many such cases when a rogue app made the CPU run at 100% in different phones. If that's the case you have to find and remove the app.I'd suggest OS monitor for finding it.Never happened to me though!
What's more,it's normal for it to get more hot than your average phone,as it carries more power under the hood and has nothing to help it dissipate the generated heat,as it's plastic. The Desire HD does a very good job with managing heat and I have never exceeded 40 C,even when gaming with an overclock at 1.8GHz and performance governor. Not saying the DHD is better, but Samsung wouldn't have left something like this if it would damage the phone. So I tend to believe that it's designed to get hot.
Mine has overheated twice.
Both times, when trying to pair itself automatically to my car kit. The phone got really really hot (i noticed it warming my leg in my jeans pocket) and needed the battery pulling out to reset it. When it started back up, the running temp was nearly 50 degrees (in standby, it runs at about 27)
Hasn't done it since though, just keeping my eye on it!

The truth about the common overheating problem and/or battery drain.

Many people have had this issue and i am going to put down the facts here.
The GMS radio in the x10 is not.. great.
It suffers in low signal area's lets say 1 to 2 bars of signal or lets say about -80 to -108dB and lower.
It requires alot more juice from the battery and that causes overheating then after a time chipset death.
This is all based on tests done at home.. i contacted my provider and had a petition signed, they fixed the tower and the issue's with my phone's heat are gone!
Now that i have full signal strength the device has no heat or battery issue's at home.
The other problem you can face is only if you flash firmware with a baseband or a separate baseband.
Many times the baseband may not settle correctly.. this will lead to severe heat, restarts, laggs or even chipset death.
Sometimes the baseband will not even be compatible.
#edit
the third problem that i am adding here and almost forgot about...
Charging while under any or even both of these conditions... can be catastrophic.
As sometimes the modem uses so much energy while the INTERNET is in usage that it cannot hold the charge.
There by cuasing major heat.. and you can guess where that will end up.
Switching to 2G instead of 3G can help ALOT, but in some cases this will end badly
As you will get very slow speeds and that causes downloads to be pathetic slow
and even more prone to bad downloads due to the bad signal quality.
The other case may be that you have the dreaded chipset of DEATH if you get above 45*C it's a good chance you have this horrid chipset.
Have it replaced by SE.
#edit END

You may very well be right on the issue of the GSM radio but..... Some earlier X10's were a lot more susceptible to this issue. My first X10 burned out in about 3 months and ran warm all the time, but in standby the replacement rarely gets warm unless I'm in a fringe area that only has edge coverage.
Anyway you don't know what a hot phone is until you've used the HTC Dream. At times you can almost cook eggs on it

So true, but i have been seeing more and more reports of this issue.
And would like to simply give a solid answer to this.
This was not meant as a complaint, but more as a answer so as to end the scourge of that question once and for all.
A overheat that ends in a damaged device = a serious issue.
No worries here
I bought my x10 in march 2010, about a week or 2 after it become available in my country. And I must say that I never had any problems with it, except what all experienced with 1.6 version (slow, laggy, few small bugs).
Overheating was not an issue, even when I upgraded to 2.1 and recently to TripNMiUI (awesome rom btw). Only time I had problems was when I searched for the right rom flashed the wrong file and almost messed up my device.
The battery was above 40°C and went to 10% in like 3 hours Now about that GMS thing... at work I have almost all the time 2 bars of signal (see attachment, was at work from 5am to 2pm) the red bar is 1, orange 2, yellow 3....
and blue lines you see is when its scanning. Sometimes I lose signal for maybe 1 or 2 hours (and that sux) But I cant show you phone temp (dont know how), but it is almost never above 30°C , except when I play games and I do quite a lot
So after more than a year I still have original battery and lasts for 3 days tops, but usually its around day and a half. And I love my X10

It depends.. the heat is mostly created from using the GSM radio in these conditions. such as online usage.
Games are not the problem unless they make constant heavy use of the internet.
Also what was the ambient temperature when you are testing?
Well I do play cestos, and was playing pocket legends, both require constant internet connection. But the temperature still didn't go above 35 (was quite warm). You mean rom testing? I mostly try out the nearly finished roms, so never had any issues with rom functionality or temperature. Except when I tried z's alpha kernel. Then it was around 33-38°C. Now that I think about it when I'm flashing new rom it always goes above 30, but after some time drops down.

Yeah thats the BB settling in nicely.. sometimes a few restarts or even the "white led of WTF crash" seems to sort it out.
averagely my phone will idle at 30 to 35*C but in usage it can climb above 40*c often.
My old motherboard reached a record High of 57*C just playing "robo defence" or even Hawx...
But here's one more test for you.
Once you need to charge plug it in and start using the internet for about 20 mins in a low signal area and watch that battery drain and the heat go thru the roof.
I never had this issue and i only get 1 to 2 bars only and it never went above 34 which is cool. Dunno about u guys but the only way i can overheat the phone is when playing heavy gunner and listening to music at the same time and the battery heat reaches 38 and it still works 100% with no trouble.

But it still has a effect on the phone.
But how many of us still flash roms or basebands?
Some versions of the board are way more unstable.. to be honest you have the most stable x10 i have seen out of the 13 i have seen here around me.
Also.. did you do the charging stress test?
It's more than just a single simple issue such as heat, it effects the battery life. "when the radio has to boost the signal"
And to be honest out of all of my phone this is the only one that loves to often drop my calls in bad conditions.
noob question coming: how do u do charging stress test? is this something like you test how long the battery lasts?

I posted it earlier.. lol. no problem.
Just go to a area with bad signal "low as in 1 to 2 bars", wait till the battery is getting low.
Start charging it and then use the "market or anything that constantly uses the radio and cpu" constantly for about 20mins while charging.
Watch the heat go up and the battery go down.
Also please note that if the ambient heat is very low then your phone should be reading much lower..
Not all of us get snow on this planet, some of us get heat stroke in the winter.
will try at work tomorrow, since i always get bad signal there.

[Q] Heating Up

Hi there XDA people,
i sorta have a problem. I am using the NAND version of the HD2, the hyperdroid rom. . its working perfectly. The problem is that the fone heats up. the battery is life is ok but the fone seriously becomes VERY hot. its not rebooting or freezing or dropping calls like said in the other threads, just heating up. I have tried MANY roms but this problem still persists.
Any fixes??
Thanx alot

Is it getting hot while downloading something? is it getting hot while charging? is it getting hot while just sitting there doing nothing with the screen on? is it getting hot while in standby? What do you mean it becomes very hot?
While using your phone for playing games or intense heavy downloading of large files its normal for any electronic device to put off heat as it is running a lot of proccess through the internal electronics. If its getting hot while just sitting there doing nothing or charging or while in standby, then in 99% of the cases ive seen with any phone, your battery is shot. Despite you getting decent battery life, it still can be shot just because its getting hot. Over time your battery life will drop drastically.
Soryy
sorry man for not mentioning, it gets hot while doing anything. When playing games, it feels like an oven. When charging it does get very hot. it gets a little hot while the screen in on. But there r no problems in functioning, i mean no reboots or that sorta stuff. So shot? i gotta get a new one?

Well while playing games it feeling like an oven is actually normal.. and while charging. But while just having the screen on and doing nothing it shouldnt really get hot at all as the CPU is under no load or a very light load. And by shot, i meant the battery not the phone. a new battery is like 12 bucks from ebay. But it seems from what you described to be normal.
However, you may have a process in the background chewing up more CPU than needed. Download a task MANAGER not killer, to be able to view all the running proccesses. I like and recommend system tuner pro but there are free task managers in the market. once you have that filter the list of running services by CPU usage, the most being at the top. Secondly, download a battery monitor tool from the market, but one that has a tempuratrue option. So you can see the temperature values of it under the different situations.
Right now, being wirelessly tethered, with my phone on the window sill (so its getting some cool air from outside) im at 37.0 degrees celsius. Sometimes when playing high res games(temple run) for awhile i'll reach 41-42 but i cant recall seeing it higher than that.
ok THNX alot
Thank you, uve helped me alot. so charging and playing games, getting hot is normal and ive taken notice of the battery moniter programs. Thanx. At standby, it gets just slightly hot, i mean its hot here in pakistan, maybe cus of that? anyways ill buy a battery after a few months maybe. Thnx Alot

Ah didnt realize you are in pakistan, so yes if your phone is in your pocket or its just generally hot out, then well yeah the phone will be hotter. You can try switching kernels or undervolting to reduce heat.

Phone getting hot easily

As the title says, my phone gets hot really easily with simple usage. Today I was just changing my ring tones and notifications sounds and it became warm (not that hot) where it shouldn't have, with such light usage. And then I played a game for about 10 minutes and the device got hot and was untouchable. The game and UI started to lag too.
This is my replacement phone, the first phone did the same. But I think this one is worse.
During normal usage it does get hot (very uncomfortable), but it won't lag.
My phone is always above 40-42C.
Is it due to my climate?
Or should I get another replacement.
Please help me on this, I can't really figure out if it's the phone or me getting defective devices.

I had the same problem when it was summer where I am. The SD810 is terrible when it comes to heating up, and the lag you experienced is due to the chip throttling back from the heat. Is it hot weather where you are?

The weather is indeed hot nowadays. But the problem is, if the phone heats so much on simple usage, then what is the purpose of owning this smartphone..? :| I'm really disappointed considering I changed my previous device cos of overheating (Note 4).
What's confusing me is, some reviews/reports say this phone is cooler than the S6 /Edge. But my friend has one and it doesn't heat this much at all.
My dad's 6S Plus runs insanely cool (compared to my 6P).
Should I go for another repair/replacement? I've already wasted 1 month waiting for a replacement.
Everything else is amazing on this phone (except the DAC of course) .
Edit: the battery is also disappointing(like 4:30 to 5:00 average). I guess it's due to the phone heating up quickly.

Didn't you research this phone and its chipset before buying? The SD810 is well known for this. I think most reports that say the phone runs cool were written just after release, which was just as the North American winter was taking hold. You could try getting a replacement but I'm fairly confident that this is a problem with the chip.

I chose this phone over the Note 5. I heard there's absolutely no heating issues with the Nexus 6P and the 810 is implemented well in this phone.
My MacBook Pro started to heat much more than it did a few months ago too. But I can't confirm it's because of the weather because it might be some new software I installed or anything.
But the thing that bugs me is, even Yureka, a budget phone, which is known as a heater, heats only like my Nexus 6P or maybe sometimes it's even better at handling heat.
My display is very very yellow too.
This phone is literally the hottest phone ever!
Two minutes of web browsing and the upper portion would have already gotten quite warm.
I think it's getting worse lately, maybe because of the aging of the thermal compound.

Agree. I think the aging of the thermal compound is def going to make thermal throttling worse over time. Plus the thermal compound they used is absolute crap. It had a marshmallow like texture. For those able, I'd consider doing the thermal hard mod posted here. Even if instead of the thermal pad you just replace the crap thermal compound with good stuff. The phone is not nearly as difficult to disassemble and some make it out to be.
You've got a Nexus, go ahead and get your root. Custom kernels like EX do pretty well with excess heat management.
EX kicks in an optional hexacore mode just in case your phone gets mad on heat (generally while charging).
Custom kernels are great in that respect.
