Phone getting hot easily - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

As the title says, my phone gets hot really easily with simple usage. Today I was just changing my ring tones and notifications sounds and it became warm (not that hot) where it shouldn't have, with such light usage. And then I played a game for about 10 minutes and the device got hot and was untouchable. The game and UI started to lag too.
This is my replacement phone, the first phone did the same. But I think this one is worse.
During normal usage it does get hot (very uncomfortable), but it won't lag.
My phone is always above 40-42C.
Is it due to my climate?
Or should I get another replacement.
Please help me on this, I can't really figure out if it's the phone or me getting defective devices.

I had the same problem when it was summer where I am. The SD810 is terrible when it comes to heating up, and the lag you experienced is due to the chip throttling back from the heat. Is it hot weather where you are?

The weather is indeed hot nowadays. But the problem is, if the phone heats so much on simple usage, then what is the purpose of owning this smartphone..? :| I'm really disappointed considering I changed my previous device cos of overheating (Note 4).
What's confusing me is, some reviews/reports say this phone is cooler than the S6 /Edge. But my friend has one and it doesn't heat this much at all.
My dad's 6S Plus runs insanely cool (compared to my 6P).
Should I go for another repair/replacement? I've already wasted 1 month waiting for a replacement.
Everything else is amazing on this phone (except the DAC of course) .
Edit: the battery is also disappointing(like 4:30 to 5:00 average). I guess it's due to the phone heating up quickly.

Didn't you research this phone and its chipset before buying? The SD810 is well known for this. I think most reports that say the phone runs cool were written just after release, which was just as the North American winter was taking hold. You could try getting a replacement but I'm fairly confident that this is a problem with the chip.

I chose this phone over the Note 5. I heard there's absolutely no heating issues with the Nexus 6P and the 810 is implemented well in this phone.
My MacBook Pro started to heat much more than it did a few months ago too. But I can't confirm it's because of the weather because it might be some new software I installed or anything.
But the thing that bugs me is, even Yureka, a budget phone, which is known as a heater, heats only like my Nexus 6P or maybe sometimes it's even better at handling heat.
My display is very very yellow too.

This phone is literally the hottest phone ever!
Two minutes of web browsing and the upper portion would have already gotten quite warm.
I think it's getting worse lately, maybe because of the aging of the thermal compound.

Agree. I think the aging of the thermal compound is def going to make thermal throttling worse over time. Plus the thermal compound they used is absolute crap. It had a marshmallow like texture. For those able, I'd consider doing the thermal hard mod posted here. Even if instead of the thermal pad you just replace the crap thermal compound with good stuff. The phone is not nearly as difficult to disassemble and some make it out to be.

You've got a Nexus, go ahead and get your root. Custom kernels like EX do pretty well with excess heat management.
EX kicks in an optional hexacore mode just in case your phone gets mad on heat (generally while charging).
Custom kernels are great in that respect.

Is the Nexus 4 really overheating?

I know many people have been saying the low benchmark scores on the Nexus 4 are due to "thermal throttling" but I don't really believe this. It's supposedly based on the optimus g, and if that doesn't suffer from this thermal throttling issue, then why would the Nexus 4? I personally believe it's just due to the software. People are also saying that an update won't boost the performance by that much, but I'm not sure what to believe.
So do you guys really believe that the nexus 4 is over-heating and under-clocking itself, or do you believe it is just in need of an update?
It may be a faulty unit from that reviewer, I only recall one review saying it overheated. The software is also to blame. I made a post in another thread about the performance with these pre-release software versions the reviewers have.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33634026#post33634026
Unfinalized software on all these review devices is probably the bottleneck. Not to mention benchmarks have zero bearing on anything ever.
And Testing units and software do have a tendency to carry heavy logcats and monitoring software... I remember from the ICS days how "heavy" most leaks would run progressively getting better by the update ...

Whilst benchmarks shouldn't matter too much, when this beastly specced phone is getting worse scores than the msm8960 with adreno 225, then it will obviously raise some concerns.

I wouldn't say I'm good or experienced enough with Android smartphones to decide whether or not it's due to software, but I sure hope it is. I'm really only judging this particular issue by what everyone else is saying.
In regards to the sceen size and "Nexus 4" theory, I agree. Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 are a good example of device names in correlation with screen sizes here.
just wondering why did google name their nexus phone 10 wbefore the fourth one
I think it all came from a comment at Anandtech, they attempted to run all the GLBenchmark tests one after another, most web sites just chose 1 or 2 tests, usually Egypt HD. Most devices crash when trying to run all GLBenchmark test serially, it does on my Nexus 7, something to to do with running out of memory allocation.
Nexus 4 in a kind of suicidally awesome way completes the entire GLBenchmark suite in one go, but running all those test including offscreen & onscreen is a long brutal test, maxing out the SoC in a way no game is likely to do, so the fact that the device is thermal regulating itself is not that strange.
If Anandtech tested individual elements of GLBenchmark, as most other review sites do, this issue would not have occurred. In fact they admitted that the Optimus G could not run all tests consecutively, so they only tested individual elements, hence no the device didn't get downclcoked due to thermal limits. It is not good that Anandtech has this disparity in testing methodology, I like the website a lot, but some thing recently have led me to question a few things, but that is another story.
Every phone overheats nowadays so there's nothing different with the n4.
This is pretty interesting
Benchmark comparison. Once at room temp, once in freezer. Freezer scores are significantly better

So yeah... Kinda does look like pretty bad thermal issues Hopefully just cause it was pre-release or something

But they singled out the Optimus G, because it was unable to complete more complex tests because of crashes.

Wow, that is a very interesting find. I was actually thinking that someone should do a freezer test just see if it is overheating. This article would seem to prove that it is. Those retests show dramatically higher scores, more on par with what the S4 processor should be capable of.
They said that perhaps the retail versions will have a higher tolerance for heat because they did not think they felt that hot. More testing and info is needed though.

To elaborate, straight from the source, in the Anandtech podcast this morning Brian commented that the phone seemed to be set to throttle at 60 degrees (for the dual-krait S4 at least it's usually around 80 afaik) and at that point the exterior of the phone was much cooler than a lot of other phones. (He talks about it at about 00:51:00.)
Something to think about.

That means it's a simple tweak, and so as long as people aren't noticing excessive heat (which we would have heard from reviews) on the phone itself then is sounds like things will be fine for the release.
Yes IT FREAKING OVERHEATS

I've had the phone for five days now and it definitely overheats. The last time it overheated was this morning. I got up, looked at the phone and unplugged it from the charger. Went to attend to my toddler for 20 mins and came back and saw that the phone was very warm and battery life was hit 20 percent. I did a check on battery usage under 'battery' in settings and saw that the playstore app had sucked 50% of the power of late. This is HIGHLY unusual becuase usually the screen is what sucks the most juice. I turned it off and turned it back on and it went back to being normal. During this overheating the phone stutters EXTREMELY visibly. Probably due to the massive thermal throttling of the cores. Once it cools off it goes back to being normal. This happens randomly and occurs once or twice a day. I've reported the bug to google. Otherwise the phone is superb.
That sounds like the Play Store app is misbehaving. Have you tried clearing the data?

Remember it's winter at northern hemisphere. So overheating might not be obvious.
Any friends in southern hemisphere (Australia) wanna chime in with their temperatures?

Same thing happened to me earlier today, I unplugged the phone from the charger and was extremely hot. I panic and shut the phone off. I rooted the phone last night so that was the only thing I did differently. I've had the phone for almost a week.
I also noticed the battery was draining way too quickly.
More like rogue apps... had the phone for over a month now, heavy usage every day and never once has it "overheated"as people say.
If im multitasking, like listening to music, downloading a torrent in the backgroud while playing angry birds or something the top back of the phone will get warm, but nothing unbearable if i deliberatly grab and hold the phone at that spot.
It's a glass phone... it will get warmer than most people are used to... its bascially the same glass that the new kitchen ovens use as a top surface... if you can cook on a glasstop stove... a phone heating up will be the same principle, albit on a smaller scale..
So yes, for the people complaining about heat.. then say in the next breath that they lost battery in some % form... funny how nobody is telling what they have installed as extra..or post screenshots of the battery page to back up the claim with info so we can help...large loss of battery % right away points to a rogue app somewhere.. you dont magically lose 10-20-50% whatever battery when unplugging the phone... thats something stuck running that is forcing your cpu to run at max for an extended period of time.
so as the internet expression says "fraps or it didnt happen" (screenshot or it didnt happen) lol
I am seeing battery temp reach 40C during antutu benchmark test running 4.2.2. Looks like it is only affecting a few devices. It gets warm during the benchmark test but nothing like unbearable heat.

Liquid Cooling in the S7

Now that I have your attention I'd like to talk to you about our lord and savior....
Seriously though, let's talk cooling here. The S7 has some nifty features in this arena. Do some benchmarks and you'll soon notice that this phone gets hot very quickly. More so than the S5 or even the S6 (used mine as a hand warmer once this last winter). This should be a bad thing, right? Not really.
The S7 has a heat transfer pipe in it, a copper one. Similar to what you would expect in a laptop. Cool, that's nothing crazy and should have been implemented a long time ago. What about this liquid cooling? Well Samsung set up an interesting system here where the phones cooling system pulls moisture out of the air and then evaporates it to aid in cooling. While this isn't true liquid cooling (there's no liquid circulating in our phones sadly), its a form of it called evaporative cooling. I have no numbers yet on how much cooler the SOC remains under load but I would suspect the heat exchange pipe alone helps immensely.
I'm trying to find a decent photo of it and I'll update this when I do. Until then, Google is your friend.
I seen some photos in a review where the guy punctured it to see what was inside, which was obviously nothing (actually gas).
EDIT:
http://bgr.com/2016/03/03/galaxy-s7s-liquid-cooling-system-doesnt-have-any-liquid-in-it/
I wonder what gas it is? I did some tests last night and many sensors showed the phone getting hot, others didn't. I just don't know where each one is located and what part its measuring. Once I killed the test it cooled off very quickly which I think is more what they were going for rather than keeping it cooler longer.

oh **** lol i meant for this to go into the best buy thread...but, she ended up getting her phone and what not..
Ive been with the phone for 5 hours now and have taken notice to how HOT this device heats up to. It heats up doing literally "normal" navigation and video watching. However, It does cool off pretty quick though. May be what the headline was referring to. My concern is how many processes are going on in just normal tinkering with my device? Does it really need to heat up this quick? Are the bug fixes coming soon? Wanted to take off the battery cover to cool it down but cant obviously.
Sent from my SM-G930T using Tapatalk
Mine heated up while setting up. It's fine now.
It even took several restarts to upgrade Google play services and some Google apps.
I think it's meant to heat up quickly due to more efficient heat transfer. Copper is a very efficient medium for heat transfer which is why it's used in computer cooling, cookware, and many other things.
The more heat that pipe heats up (or rather, the more quickly it can) the better. Next time you have some time put this phone through some demanding tests and benchmarks. Use something like AIDA64 and watch the thermal tab. You'll notice that many of the phones thermal sensors hit 37-41C rapidly but once the load is taken off the hardware they drop down 8 to 14C or more in a matter of 20 or so seconds. That's ~46 to 60F for those that hate math. That gives us an average of 0.4-0.7C or 2.3-3F per second.
On a side note can anyone help me map out the thermal sensors? There's quite number of them on the S7 but their names don't exactly tell me where they're located except for a few.

Agressive Thermal Throttling

I've been running benchmarks on this phone.
I've noticed a couple of things.
Thermal throttling on this phone starts at a very low threshold and is very aggressive.
Supposedly the maximum frequency of the large cluster is 2.45 GHz
At room temperature my phone never reaches that performance.
Here is a copy of the thermal-engine.conf, pulled from system/etc.
As soon as you start to benchmark the speed starts dropping:
At room temp I get Antutu ssores in the 130-150K range.
If the phone has been in a very cool room I get 160K numbers.
If I put it in a very cold environment for a few minutes I can get numbers in the 178K range.
Back to back runs plunge performance.
So it does not surprise me that the phone freezes at times.
Not happy that the phone throttles like this.
I have also found that if the phone gets to 44C then the throttling is so bad that a LG G4 or Samsung Galaxy S6 will outperform this phone.
So the thermal-engine.conf has this phone crippled.
This is speculative, but I wonder if overheating was the cause of the release delay. If so, perhaps this was the workaround they implemented to get the device out. That said, if throttling is the culprit then it could explain why my phone runs like an Evo3D much of the time. Generally before use, it's in my pocket, which is body temperature and the phone is always warm. Maybe even pocket-temp causes throttling?
Oh well, return initiated yesterday, awaiting response from CS - I just can't stand to take a chance a potentially crippled device. While the updated did increase the responsiveness of the screen a slight bit, I didn't see an overwhelming change that put this in the category of other devices running similar hardware. Back to the OP3...

So the device won't get really hot.
It won't even get that warm unless it's charging.
If you put it on a charger, it will be throttled after about a minute.
If I run Antutu and start out with the device sitting on a table in a cool room (too many conditions), I can get a score of about 167K.
If I sit it on a baggy of ice, I can get a score of about 177K but never unless the device is artificially chilled.
But if you run Antutu back to back or GeekBench and look at the temp, as soon as it hits 43C, you hit a wall.
The device won't heat up more than that but it's now running only slightly faster than a 6P and slower than a Pixel XL or Moto Z.
I don't want to pay $850 (yes that much if you include the extended warranty and tax) for a marginal device.
If I had root, I would have played with the thermal-engine.conf. It can't be right.
You go from full performance to half in a matter of 4 degrees C.
I have looked at other files for other devices and I've never seen anything that aggressive.
Even the 6P was not that bad.
I have an iPhone 6s (work) and no matter ho many times I run the test I always get about the same numbers.
I have my phone charging and I ran the test and I just got 115K. So on a charger the performance is 65% of max.
This is why I'm sending it back. Might as well be a LG G6.

Good to know, and thanks for the thorough diagnostic! Even with rooting and changing the throttle configs, I fear a voided warranty and bricked phone if it's a design flaw and not a software bug. It's just not worth it for me to wait and see when there are other new and shiny things just around the corner. *squirrel*

I'm pretty sure it's a mistake in the thermal-engine.conf.
I actually contacted them and submitted my information.
You don't throttle from 39-40C down to 50%
I've worked designing chips for better than 25 years.
If the 835 is more efficient than the 810, then there is no need for anything that aggressive.
Anyway, I asked for a RMA and they are sending a the boxes/envelopes.
No cases is a big deal for me also.
Since I'm already at $900 for the phone and camera (taxes and insurance). I might as well give the X a look.
Yeah, it costs more but if I'm already at $900 another couple of hundred isn't going to matter.
Unfortunately, I have to go back to my LG G3 since my 6P was sold and shipped last week.

Heating up | Exynos S20

Hi all,
I got my S20 a couple days back and never since that day have I not seen my phone heat up every now and then.
Heavy multi-tasking ; this thing starts to warm up which is normal but what is not normal is how excessively hot this device get when using the camera for a little over 5 minutes , whether it is recording videos or clicking pictures, this device becomes unreasonably hot.
Playing a little bit of game on highest settings for a couple of minutes shouldn't be causing as much heat as the S20 ends up generating.
I am skeptical for the logetivity of this device if this heating up keeps up on such trivial tasks.
Not sure, but has anyone before ever experience this kind of problem and has seen the OEM actually fix it with mere software updates?:fingers-crossed:
Let's discuss the status of each of our devices and figure if only a bunch of us have the devices which are behaving like this or is it happening with all of our phones?
SD S20 owners can also pitch in for comparison.:good:
Thank you.
Yes I'm also experiencing same thing. Even watching a 3-4 minute video on YouTube makes the phone feel warm. Camera heats up the phone very quickly.
Hope Samsung solves the issue.
Same problem on camera it heats up rilly fast, not seeing that in you tube though..
Same here...or even worse. 5 mins on facebook/twitter and then the device becomes obviously warm.
Same thing happens when doing wireless charging. It still gets warm quite quickly even when fast wireless charging is disabled.
Exynos S20 exynos 990
Same problem. So I went to Samsung Service center and told them the problem regarding this overheating issue. What they are telling me is that 41.8 degrees(what they have read from my device using a thermal scanner) is normal (I don't think so as 42 degrees for trivial task is absurd) also they inform me that they will reinstall the operating system once again and check whether the problem still persists, if yes replacement will be done by giving us one certificate that we can take it to the shop where we have bought the phone and get a new s20 (what a lengthy process).

New Software updates
Since I wrote this post, there have been two updates pushed by samsung.
None of them made any dent to the slew of problems that this phone has been having.
I tested antutu score, I know they are not the real test for day to day usage but these scores have actually dropped since latest update.
The camera albeit is better at focusing , I can testify to that as I made two videos before and after the updates and I can see some difference but the heating is still going on like crazy.
Now I think, Samsung should have added a heat vapor chamber in the phone to manage this hot garbage.
Very disappointed to have payed so much and not even get the performance as good as the last year's SD devices.
Facing the same issue. I just want to know how can I get is replaced.
Samething on Exynos. When it hits 40c, it automatically switches to 60hz and get back when it cools down. Exynos was never good.
But one thing I can say for sure if you are worry about longevity. Never user your phone while it is charging. One thing is using your phone hot while discharging. Another thing is using it while charging and it will definitely impact battery life long term speaking.
I would disable fast charging too.
Same here! And if you have like 30-35% battery and your phone begins to heat up, say goodbye to 120hz, I think it throttles so hard that the performance can't go beyond 60.
It is really very very disappointing .It gets up so hot just using the device continues for 30 min. Once the temp cross 40+ it switches to 60hz. hahahah for this we have to pay a premium price.
Have already started to have 2nd thoughts for next galaxy devices with exynos. really really very annoying to use this phone these day in hot summers.
I hope to get it fixed soon. if not probably iam goning to quit this phone. very disappointed.
Display turns into yellow
Same problem here with ultra exynos after watching serval videos and using camera for 10 to 15 mins. At low brightness display turns yellowish because of heat and screen turns into 60 hz automatically. Has anyone noticed this yellowish problem?

Yeah, noticed that too. I tried turning off the 120hz and it fixed the issue.

That's strange. I have noticed 2 times yellowish display like a filter and after increasing the brightness it was OK but after reducing again it went to yellowish. Thank you for the info..

Same. But it wasn't happening before so it might be a software bug.

Same issue
Same problem here guys, I am very frustrated.
First of all why make two variants, one with snapdragon an other with exynos?
Why this discrimination?
Secondly why should I pay for a flagship and get a less than flagship experience?
I hope it is partly software fixable.
I am so gonna be very unpleasant and persistent at support. Greece here and bought s20 two days ago

It goes back to the early 90's when Samsung made a trade deal with Qualcomm. As a result of the trade deal, Samsung were allowed to use Qualcomms products but only in the markets where Samsung's products didn't compete directly with Qualcomms i.e the USA.
Nobody held a gun to your head when you bought the device. You could've just done a simple Google search and found a way to import the SD variant. Samsung aren't discriminating - it's called business.
If you dont like the Exynos variant, the OnePlus 8 is being announced on the 14th - that'll surely have the SD865.
It sucks, the only software solution I can see is throttling TBH.
Honestly thinking about cutting my losses on my S20+

Least expected from a flagship
I have a S20 and it heats up to that level that with a cover also it gets uncomfortable to hold. And this observation is with not any heavy use, very routine use like checking Gmail, watching Youtube, browsing Instagram.
I sold my one plus 5t and got this phone, very disappointed, should have waited and bought a one plus only. Samsung, if you are hearing me please fix this - if it's a hardware issue, please recall and provide a replacement, if it's a software issue please fix. But stop asking customers to go to service centres as it is not a specific problem to any phone. Most if not all exynos customers are facing it.
We been really ****ed over by samdong with latest updates the charging has gone from 1 hr to charge from 0 to 100 too 80 mins and only reason i can think of is because of the overheating that exynos is suffering so we pay nearly 1400 notes for this piece of **** and its getting worse on every update **** you samdong

OnePlus 8 Pro Overheats atleast twice a day

As the title states already hating this phone and I still have like 700 left to pay on it. It Overheats atleast 2 times a day if not more. Can't seem to handle much I only live in the UK. I would hate to be somewhere where it is hot all the time.
Wow that's bad glad I don't face these issues. My device had been running smoothly from day one and no overheating even with 35°C and up.
Do you mind sharing what you're doing with your device when it overheats?
When being used in my car and when playing Pokémon go usually. I know it could be classed as high usage.
But I have never had this problem before. And definitely not while in use in my car being charged using maps and music etc
Better make sure you don't overheat yourself while driving. My device doesn't get a chance to overheat while navigating as it is positioned in front of the air-conditioning keeping it nice and cool.
I've had overheating in the past with my Note 9 but haven't seen it one my OP8Pro yet.
However it might have something to do with the latest firmware as my device does get warmer than before and battery drains much faster.

I have exactly the same issue as described. Only solution I found to 'lower' a bit the occurences of getting this annoying message that the phone is overheating, as well as a severe throttling of the screen and CPU, is to force the phone to use specific CPU frequencies depending on what app is running (scenarios). I do this through Franko Kernel Manager, but maybe some other apps could offer the same functions. I do love that phone but this overheating issue is seriously getting on my nerves too...

What OS you running mate? Where's it from ? What model?
It's more than likely that a particular region / model / firmware will be having more issues than others.
On a personal note my device has remained cool even after playing Dreamcast games via a Bluetooth controller for over an hour. Just doesn't overheat, the 865 has great efficiency which was one of its plus points over the 855. Probably the CPU / GPU has an imperfect contact with your heatsink.
If that's the case then it'll progress and will end up a lot worse, so an RMA would be the only option, be sure to get the tech to make some notes.

Normal unrooted stock. OnePlus UK OnePlus 8 Pro.
It seems to run hot to the touch most of the time.
I am having the same issues.
I got the phone two days ago, still not facing these issues.
I've been driving my current car for almost 2 years now. I've used a magnetic phone holder on an AC vent and have turned that vent off ever since. For 2 years I've charged phones will using Google Maps/music streaming with no issues. Phones include Galaxy S10, S20U, Note 10, OP 7, etc. with no issues. This OnePlus 8 Pro overheats very easily and I've resorted to actually turning the AC vent on in order to avoid it.
I'm not sure what happened, but the 8 Pro has had some serious QC issues.
Maybe a factory reset would help with overheating issues, a total wipe. I used fastboot erase userdata while in the bootloader mode. I had a couple of issues and after resetting, they seemed to go away.

Yea defo not right pal, send that back.. if it's from three then go into store, see if they can swap over the counter.
Had my phone a week and its done it once. Was in the car sitting on my console kinda in direct sunlight and charging. This worries me cause (what if I go to the beach will it overheat) and (2) what if I have it in the holder on my bike while I'm out and about will it overheat?

It's been 35C + in the UK this past week and my phone has remained cool throughout, no problems whatsoever.
The 865 is a great chip, it's extremely efficient unless you get a bad one which could happen with any SOC, even Intel and AMD have some bad eggs. It happens unfortunately.
Same as some chips overclock better than others
Has happened to me numerous times too. Usually when using Android Auto in the car (not when it's warm outside) and also when outside in the sun. This is my 2nd 8pro and it happened on the first too.

Are you charging and using GPS at the same time during use of Android auto?
Thats a sure fire way to bake any phone, even a stand alone GPS unit.

Nope. On its own. I have to blow the aircon on the phone to keep it cool when navigating. Also using the phone this week with my drone I couldn't see the screen because it kept on overheating and decreasing the brightness. Never happened once on my 7pro.

I haven't had that issue in any way, was playing Dreamcast and Wii games for a few hours earlier, didn't even feel warm.
GPS can be a drain on power, depends on a few things though.
But turning off like that? I would suggest that's a fault. Probably an imperfect contact with the heatsink.
Just a thought but are you running QHD and 5G.
I don't use either.. try turning to 4G and FHD, might be why?
If not then I'd see what OnePlus or your supplier can do about a replacement. Really need to get the point over that its not a software issue, probably perform a factory wipe just to be sure prior to sending anything off to them.
Shame that it's happening to be honest.

The phone dims the display when it starts to overheat and a message pops up saying it's overheating. Jerry rig shows two dollops of heat sink paste on the CPU so I suspect OP know then have problems, they've also decreased the max brightness after an update most likely to counteract the overheating. It's happened with my two 8pros so I doubt it's a manufacturing ,most likely the SOC naturally runs warmer or the design doesn't dissapate heat effectivity. Doesn't bother me massively but it does happen.
