The truth about the common overheating problem and/or battery drain. - XPERIA X10 General

Many people have had this issue and i am going to put down the facts here.
The GMS radio in the x10 is not.. great.
It suffers in low signal area's lets say 1 to 2 bars of signal or lets say about -80 to -108dB and lower.
It requires alot more juice from the battery and that causes overheating then after a time chipset death.
This is all based on tests done at home.. i contacted my provider and had a petition signed, they fixed the tower and the issue's with my phone's heat are gone!
Now that i have full signal strength the device has no heat or battery issue's at home.
The other problem you can face is only if you flash firmware with a baseband or a separate baseband.
Many times the baseband may not settle correctly.. this will lead to severe heat, restarts, laggs or even chipset death.
Sometimes the baseband will not even be compatible.
#edit
the third problem that i am adding here and almost forgot about...
Charging while under any or even both of these conditions... can be catastrophic.
As sometimes the modem uses so much energy while the INTERNET is in usage that it cannot hold the charge.
There by cuasing major heat.. and you can guess where that will end up.
Switching to 2G instead of 3G can help ALOT, but in some cases this will end badly
As you will get very slow speeds and that causes downloads to be pathetic slow
and even more prone to bad downloads due to the bad signal quality.
The other case may be that you have the dreaded chipset of DEATH if you get above 45*C it's a good chance you have this horrid chipset.
Have it replaced by SE.
#edit END

You may very well be right on the issue of the GSM radio but..... Some earlier X10's were a lot more susceptible to this issue. My first X10 burned out in about 3 months and ran warm all the time, but in standby the replacement rarely gets warm unless I'm in a fringe area that only has edge coverage.
Anyway you don't know what a hot phone is until you've used the HTC Dream. At times you can almost cook eggs on it

So true, but i have been seeing more and more reports of this issue.
And would like to simply give a solid answer to this.
This was not meant as a complaint, but more as a answer so as to end the scourge of that question once and for all.
A overheat that ends in a damaged device = a serious issue.

No worries here
I bought my x10 in march 2010, about a week or 2 after it become available in my country. And I must say that I never had any problems with it, except what all experienced with 1.6 version (slow, laggy, few small bugs).
Overheating was not an issue, even when I upgraded to 2.1 and recently to TripNMiUI (awesome rom btw). Only time I had problems was when I searched for the right rom flashed the wrong file and almost messed up my device.
The battery was above 40°C and went to 10% in like 3 hours Now about that GMS thing... at work I have almost all the time 2 bars of signal (see attachment, was at work from 5am to 2pm) the red bar is 1, orange 2, yellow 3....
and blue lines you see is when its scanning. Sometimes I lose signal for maybe 1 or 2 hours (and that sux) But I cant show you phone temp (dont know how), but it is almost never above 30°C , except when I play games and I do quite a lot
So after more than a year I still have original battery and lasts for 3 days tops, but usually its around day and a half. And I love my X10

It depends.. the heat is mostly created from using the GSM radio in these conditions. such as online usage.
Games are not the problem unless they make constant heavy use of the internet.
Also what was the ambient temperature when you are testing?

Well I do play cestos, and was playing pocket legends, both require constant internet connection. But the temperature still didn't go above 35 (was quite warm). You mean rom testing? I mostly try out the nearly finished roms, so never had any issues with rom functionality or temperature. Except when I tried z's alpha kernel. Then it was around 33-38°C. Now that I think about it when I'm flashing new rom it always goes above 30, but after some time drops down.

Yeah thats the BB settling in nicely.. sometimes a few restarts or even the "white led of WTF crash" seems to sort it out.
averagely my phone will idle at 30 to 35*C but in usage it can climb above 40*c often.
My old motherboard reached a record High of 57*C just playing "robo defence" or even Hawx...
But here's one more test for you.
Once you need to charge plug it in and start using the internet for about 20 mins in a low signal area and watch that battery drain and the heat go thru the roof.

I never had this issue and i only get 1 to 2 bars only and it never went above 34 which is cool. Dunno about u guys but the only way i can overheat the phone is when playing heavy gunner and listening to music at the same time and the battery heat reaches 38 and it still works 100% with no trouble.

These days on WB's rom.. i can play quake 2 death match online "with stencil shadows enabled" while listening to dimmu borgir" with no issue's..
but if i was on stock 2.1 or even the old motherboard.. forget about it.
And trust me many do have this issue.

My phone overheated only once when i baught it and the temp reached 47. But i had to send it to repairs for the broken usb connecter, maybe they fixed that issue.

That's the same conclusion I came to.
When I was using the internet, my battery temp shot up and the phone would restart at 41-42 degrees (stock 1.6)
I got the motherboard replaced under warranty and I've never had a problem with it since

But it still has a effect on the phone.
But how many of us still flash roms or basebands?
Some versions of the board are way more unstable.. to be honest you have the most stable x10 i have seen out of the 13 i have seen here around me.
Also.. did you do the charging stress test?
It's more than just a single simple issue such as heat, it effects the battery life. "when the radio has to boost the signal"
And to be honest out of all of my phone this is the only one that loves to often drop my calls in bad conditions.

noob question coming: how do u do charging stress test? is this something like you test how long the battery lasts?

I posted it earlier.. lol. no problem.
Just go to a area with bad signal "low as in 1 to 2 bars", wait till the battery is getting low.
Start charging it and then use the "market or anything that constantly uses the radio and cpu" constantly for about 20mins while charging.
Watch the heat go up and the battery go down.
Also please note that if the ambient heat is very low then your phone should be reading much lower..
Not all of us get snow on this planet, some of us get heat stroke in the winter.

will try at work tomorrow, since i always get bad signal there.

Still having cell standby issues

Could someone help me troubleshoot/fix my cell standby issue. I know it's been asked before and I apologize if this upsets you. But, i have searched and tried methods to fix the issue with no success. And it just kills my battery.
I've used many roms and initially would always have 50-70% cell standby. With the airplane mode fix i could only get it to drop to 20-35%. I'm on the Aloysius rom now which isn't supposed to have any cell standby issues and my cell standby is still 45-60%. With airplane fix I get it down to 15-30%. I can never get it down to under 10 which would at least make me happy. But, from what I've read most get it down to zero. I would appreciate any suggestions or ideas to help me fix this problem. Thanks
I think alot of that depends on your location... Cell standby is not a bad thing, we just don't want the bug that makes it sit at 50% every time I restart my phone. Mine fluctuates between 0%, (when im downtown with full bars all the time) and 25%, (when at home with only 1 or 2 bars).

Yeah I commute from sacramento to san francisco every day so initially I blamed that. But even when I'm in my house with full bars it's up around 30% always. Not only does this waste battery life, but i would assume, possibly incorrectly, that this also slows down the speed of the device as well as it's being used to find a signal. Ugh
It may not be that big of an issue... Or at least as big as i think it is. But, i would think that with the limitations of the battery and processor that this would just make things even worse. It's just a nuisance that people can get theirs to zero and I have never gotten it that low.

I am using v6 of his ROM. I still get better battery than any other ROM I have used, and trust me, i have flashed almost every single ROM. But since seeing others with very low, I was just wondering as well.
OK well something weird is happening with my time without a signal... I am at 65% right now and already did the airplane trick... and it just jumps up.... that being said... My battery life is still way outlasting anyother ROM and to top it off, I am getting a signal and am making calls in places at work where I did not have a signal at all.... not that I care much about the time with a signal % because this ROM is the best, but its just weird... better battery performance, better signal, higher stat.. hmmm

HTC Incredible feels like [W]ildfire

Is anybody else's phone getting really hot? If I have my shell case on the back them I dont notice it, but if I'm using the phone without the case then I cM tell its getting really hot on both sides.
Is this a standard issue? I had heard of the N1 getting hot.

I had the same issue when using Live wallpapers. I disabled almost every feature of the phone to maximize battery life including live wallpaper. the phone runs fine now its cold to the touch.
Sometimes the phone will get hot when using GPS or when you are downloading something for awhile or using an App thats a little more intense then normal. If yours is getting hot and staying hot with normal phone use when its just idling, I would take it back.
The most likely cause of this would be if you regularly are in low signal areas, the radio needs more power to boost signal to reach the tower, thus uses battery more quickly, and also generates much more heat than it would in high signal areas. Since the phone cant be overclocked yet, that is really the only reason I can think of that you would have a drastically higher temperature than normal. Coming from an OCd wifi tether droid, I havent found an occasion where the incredible feels anything other than pleasantly cool to the touch, but I guess other peoples experiences may vary. If its the amount of heat you might get from holding it in your hands for a while, I wouldnt worry about it too much. If its hot enough for long periods of time that youre really concerned about, might have a bad radio on your phone, good luck getting an exchange atm >.>
Thanks for all the input.
Im not in an area with low signal. I'm in Little Rock, AR - our arena across the river downtown named "Verizon Arena" for crying loud. Lol. ... It gets hot when I talk on it though, and its not just body heat from my hand. Both the back & front heat up, and sometimes when its charging it gets hot. It doesn't take long, and as a matter of fact its getting warmer as I type this from my phone.
It may be something up with the radio, as was suggested. Yesterday I was trying to call out & when the person on the other line answered they couldn't hear me but could hear them. I called a couple of different people a couple of different times just to test it out & it was messed up every time. I powered the phone off, cut it back on, and it works fine now. Could these be related issues or what? When that was happening I also heard this very high pitched noise coming out of where my ear goes. It has gone away as well, but I'm trying to provide as much detail as possible in case others can help or suggest issues. I really don't want to have to take the phone back - especially since they're fresh out of stock.
Interesting you mentioned the high pitched noise while on phone calls...
I had the exact same problem, whenever I tried to make or recieve calls was getting a high pitched noise from the speaker, i could hear the other party, but they could not hear me. turning phone off and back on fixed the issue. Ive also noticed the #1 app in my battery usage is Cell Standby at 43%. So my radio is using almost half my battery. I live and work around Washington D.C. area so coverage and signal loss should not be an issue. But "Time without a signal is 26%" I'm thinking theres an issue with the radio on the Incredible also... wish there were more confirmed reports.

NewB question here, but I've seen several mentions of how much battery power an app is taking up. How do you find that out...?
Im using a widget called battery left, I click that to bring up the usage since last unplugged. The longer way is under settings -> about -> battery -> battery use.
I just downloaded & installed the LauncherPro app. I'm running it now & this is the point where my phone is getting really hot. I don't know if the launchers the reason why or not. A) Could running another launcher like LauncherPro be the reason? B) Should I uninstall & just use Sense UI?

Could be, try finding out if your cpu is running near max a lot, seePU is a good app to get cpu load at a glance. If its constantly near max load with the launcher running its likely the cause.
I don't know how to find CPU temp., but to find battery temp., go to Phone and type in *#*#4636#*#*
Go to Battery information and it's listed in *C.
Maybe that will help....somehow.

Hey my phone is doing the same thing so far it reads display is 75% ande everything else is under 10%. my battery temp on set cpu it says its 119 degrees that is the highest i have seen it usually gets between 105 and 110. Id really if someone could tell me what the problem is .
I had this problem before on different roms. There is quite a few variables such the rom, radio, and kernel which could cause your battery to be hot. You may wanna try a different rom to see if you having the same issue.

Battery-Is it me or the crack?

So yeah, I smoke too much crack, but am I dreaming that my battery life has diminished since the flash to the latest Tmo ROM or are other people getting this too?
Yes, I have done a search and I see a smatterng of posts here and there and no I did not take a baseline, but I thought to get some opinions.
It takes a couple of days (for the radio in particular) to settle in. I'd be willing to be that after a few battery cycles, you'll be back to normal again.... errr.... well, you might not be, if you were really on crack, but your phone should be normal again.
I hope after a couple of days mine gets better...it drains a lot faster now.

you could always try different radios and see which one works better for you as far a battery life goes. If you're not going to use your 3g for a while just turn it off, and that will extend your battery life by a lot. 3g eats battery real fast.
Ditto for me!
I am definitely running into the same issue and am seriously considering rolling back unless the stupid radio settles down soon. Is there a way to roll back to the previous ROM? The only major advantage the new ROM has for me is the updated SWYPE keyboard...
I am in an office for a good part of the day where I get mostly E and sometimes G. I notice that it drains the fastest when I am connected to my Wifi Network.
That may seem normal, but I swear that it is draining faster than with the last ROM.
Mind you, I was one who had virtually no issues with th last ROM save for the pink spot in the pictures.
Last nigt I tried to play a game as a test...low energy consumption-Yacht II (Yahtzee basically). At the end of each game which took about 1.5 minutes I lost 1-2 full percent of the battery. That seems excessive.
....so I smoked some crack.

lol.... Time flies when you're smoking crack! That might have something to do with it.... could just be your perception. Crack make you paranoid! Judgement also sucks when you're cracked out.
Try sobering up for a day or 2, do some battery tests, flash back to the older rom, do some tests with that one. Then you'll know for sure... then smoke some more crack and let us know the results. lol
Back to normal battery life, finally!
Ever since I upgraded to CHT 1.8, my battery life has gone back to normal. I guess the updated TMo Rom didn't play very nicely with CHT 1.7.1.

I have the exact same problem, it happens especially when I play any games or intensive appliaction. The battery drains and it gets hot next to the camera, I suspect this is where the cpu lives. Do you think its because its rooted? because I rooted it as soon as I got it so I dont know what it was like before.
And as I am away from the uk for the next six weeks I cant even send it back to O2
No nothing to do with root, mine was same before and after, pretty normal to get hot on some demanding apps.

It gets really hot sometimes though, not to the extent of burnt plastic smell but it gets pretty uncomfortable touching around lens at the back.
I've been going through this this morning. It seems that the CPU loves to go up to 1.2GHz even if it doesn't need to be that high (and it stays there). Also there I've also been noticing through ADB shell that their are a few niggles. For example the wi-fi sharing process can start without even being activated.
For example this was a ADB shell top taken while running Cordy downclocked to 800MHz in setcpu. The phone was a tiny bit warm but only by the camera (where the CPU is). Basically, this just shows that if you are playing a game, nothing else is going on so the CPU shouldn't be going up to 1200MHz. And it plays the same as when it isn't underclocked.

I've been going through this this morning. It seems that the CPU loves to go up to 1.2GHz even if it doesn't need to be that high (and it stays there). Also there I've also been noticing through ADB shell that their are a few niggles. For example the wi-fi sharing process can start without even being activated.

My phone gets very hot at time too...
I also noticed wifi sharing starting up by itself. Yesterday it started by itself and used 10% battery usage even though I had wifi switched off the entire time..

Do you have root and Titanium/MyBackup Pro?
If you do, freeze anything that mentions wifi sharing, unless you are going to use wifi hotspot and kies air a lot.

This thing gets hot! Just been configuring launcher pro which took around 5 minutes and wasn't data intensive and the back of the phone is really hot. So much that I can smell the plastic heating up! The battery drained real fast during the process too.
Anyone else experiencing this ?

My phone got so hot that it shut itself down!
since that i have done a complete reset of the phone and started from scratch again....100% better.
The problem as i see it is with all the 'tinkering' that we users do. All the additional launchers etc and widgets that you add really seem to mess the phone up!
My advice is keep the phone as samsung intended it...or at least change very little. You will see far improved battery life and none of the over heating problems.
Just my opinion but its worked for me.

Find the nearest Apple store near you.
The only time i had this was when it waa both charging, in a case and playing a big game...
Im currently chatting, listening to a live stream, charging and posting this, no problem with heat at all..
Perhaps its a problem with some specific phones

that's just not true.
Mine gets hot aswell .. it's random sometimes but usualy with playing games etc. I suspect it has something to do with the samsung drivers/software and not our tinkering.
Bugs bugs bugs...
Mine also gets fairly hot, which might be a little uncomfortable - but that's the sacrifice you make when you get such a high powered device in such a small space.
Well, amount of apps/tinkering/etc has nothing to do with the phone getting got UNLESS an installed app in messing something up.I have heard many such cases when a rogue app made the CPU run at 100% in different phones. If that's the case you have to find and remove the app.I'd suggest OS monitor for finding it.Never happened to me though!
What's more,it's normal for it to get more hot than your average phone,as it carries more power under the hood and has nothing to help it dissipate the generated heat,as it's plastic. The Desire HD does a very good job with managing heat and I have never exceeded 40 C,even when gaming with an overclock at 1.8GHz and performance governor. Not saying the DHD is better, but Samsung wouldn't have left something like this if it would damage the phone. So I tend to believe that it's designed to get hot.
Mine has overheated twice.
Both times, when trying to pair itself automatically to my car kit. The phone got really really hot (i noticed it warming my leg in my jeans pocket) and needed the battery pulling out to reset it. When it started back up, the running temp was nearly 50 degrees (in standby, it runs at about 27)
Hasn't done it since though, just keeping my eye on it!

Solution for Xperia X10 Heating up and rebooting

From many users of xperia x10 who are using firmware version 2.3.3(official update) i ve heard that the phone gets heated up while on 3G connection while on wifi there is no such problem. Even I had similar problem. I really did an in-depth study in this matter it came to my notice that many got their battery changed some got motherboard replaced, but still most of them are not satisfied and hadnt got a solution for this particular problem.
Facing this problem I was really frustrated. I tried all methods like rooting, using custom kernel etc. Then it came to my mind that all this started to happen after I did official update to 2.3.3. For about 1 year i couldnt figure it out. Even if surrounding temperature increased the phone would reboot. this situation was really ridiculous. Tried and tested in many conditions I found out that after flashing to the firmware that the handset came first from factory ie 2.1update there is no problem of heating up or rebooting. I agree many functionality are not there in 2.1 when compared to 2.3.3. but u can be rest assured that ur phone wont get heated up and reboot while using 3G.
Conclusion
Tried on 3 different Xperia X10i 's the problem got solved...... If u really want to use X10i with 2.3.3 then its possible only if u can keep the phone cool by having a dedicated table fan or AC blower directly blowing on to ur xperia X10i while on 3G Connection
HIT THANKS
still same problem...

I tried everything including the 2.1update firmaware and still the same problem. Some x10 get fixed with new batterys, some with replacing the motherboard and others with downgrading the software, its not the same for everyone.
I have one which has everything (screen, keyboard, MB, battery, etc.) replaced except the SIM card, I had 2 other phones to steal parts from, still overheats and shuts off I think SIM cards play a role in this too.
It's funny when I said the same thing I was harassed as a liar.
But it's true.
You want 3G get a PC fan and glue it to your x10.
The X10 is a failure as a android device "phone"
Gets hotter than hell.
The internal cellular radio eats the battery.
Proof of concept.. switch to flight mode.
Using 3G for a extended time will most definitely kill the device.
That little black thing I think helps keep the dust out of your phone but since I remove them(around 5) it does not SEEM to heat up as much as before.
Sent from my X10i using xda app-developers app
I removed my cover off of the X10.
Its basically a screen and mobo wide open.
Still heat rises.
3G is not usable on the x10.

Obvious troll is obvious.
If what you are saying is true.
Then obviously there must be more than one version of this chipset.

It's not for every users, some because of battery, sometime due to board related, etc.
But. ... yeah Mugen is better, using it for months and very satisfied, also have a good temp result,
check this my screenshoot :

Today, almost all new smartphone using internal
battery (sh***t), keep pushing us to buy their new product
you will laugh at me.
I found the solution
use adhesive tape on the SIM card and this prevents contact failure and overheating.
So far I can use 3g, wifi, wireless network without problems, without reboots!!!!!!!!!!!! !!
WOW. It worked for me.

Ha ha...
Photo of me in -1C weather and phone battery 27C.
Photo of me play modern Combat for half an hour and battery 27C
Photo of me and my phone with battery 27C
Photo of me download a 3.5GB mkv video and battery 27C
Does anyone see a pattern emerging here?
After market batteries I've used do not return the temperature and will remain at a default of 27C.
I know this is true for my Mugen 1800mAh battery in my XPERIA X10i and a PISEN 1750mAh battery in my XPERIA LT26i
HDMI and an XPERIA S can get well over 40C before the device monitor shuts the phone down and or etc.
With my PISEN 1750mAh battery, it's 27C all the way... which is scary when you know the temp is increasing and nothing to curb it.
Just something to confirm and/or be aware of if found to be true with other after market batteries.
P.S. Oh and the fixed battery in an XPERIA LT26i can be replaced with a LT25i (XPERIA V) battery as my PISEN battery was for a LT25i (BA800). NFC is not hampered by aftermarket battery in my case.
