[Question] How battery life really is on marshmellow? - X Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hello,
i ordered a moto x play two days ago and i will get my device today or tomorrow. Now i am not sure if i should upgrade to marshmallow. Regarding to some posts here the battery life seems to suffer from the update. Is this true? Do you have the same battery life with 6.0 as with 5.1.1 ? For me battery life is kind of crucial. I chose the moto because of the good battery.
I'd love to know your opinion.
Thanx in advance.

Battery life seemed a bit lower on 6.0 than on Lollipop for a few days. Now, it's stabilized, and I'd say it's almost as good

No the battery performance hasn't gone down but has instead remained same or been better now.

It's been great for me. 7-8 hrs sot with stock kernel and now on track to get 10 with Squid kernel.

I get 10+ hours SOT . With stock mm.. dual sim and mobile data.

I usually play around with the autostarts app and titanium backup. I guess, i can root my device and i will then be able to optimize the phone i like with these tools.
Thanx for your answers. I still would like to get some more votes.
regards.

I think the only difference MM can make will be due to optimizing certain apps. Its sucha shame that google play services cant be optimized. I am finding its better than LP.
Offtopic - I had a S5 (g900h) with LP 5.0.1 stock and samsung had this optimization option which lead to an awesome battery life. This is why I believe that can be the only thing which can make it better

It depends on your usecase. If you are constantly on the phone, they won't differ much. If your phone is screen-off most of the time, Marshmallows Doze mechanism can save you a ton of battery life (assumping you jumpstart it with Naptime or similar). It could possibly be matched or even overcome if you REALLY fine tune a lollipop setup with Amplify, but from a technical standpoint doze is far better, because the OS controls when the device wakes up, not the apps themselves. Also, the most recent (best?) kernels will only be for MM.

Battery drains during standby mode. Overnight battery drops upto 3-5 % is it normal? I am on 5.1.1

2-3-4% is expected for 10 hour . see if location and wifi are turned on in advanced setting. it depends on the apps you are running. post screenshot.

That's absolutely great.
It means if 4 percent decreases in 8 hours it's about 1 percent in 2 hours. Me too has same result although in between 8 hours I took a 3 minute call and my alarm rung.

Note3 8hr battery life

Note3 running Beans stock 4.2.2 rom. I've removed/disabled a lot of the system apps/bloatware and run a couple xposed mods (in pic below). Phone was half on wifi half on good 4G; also in good service areas entire time. GPS off, automatic brightness. I only get 4hrs of screen time and total running time is approx 8hrs with 15% left. I think this is quite low for a 3200mah battery. Anyone give me any suggestions to prolong the battery?..or reasons why I can't seem to go a full day?
...I posted this because my bro has stock nonrooted S5 with high brightness on whole day and can easily go 1.5 days with same on screen time so I was lil disappointed in my note.
Thanks ahead of time for any help!

you have something keeping the phone awake or chewing the battery...most note 3 get about 15-25 hours per charge... i keep my brightness fixed at about 25% i have greenify now it seemed to help.
How do I check what it is? I'm not sure what it could be but know that 15% with 8 hr total battery time and 4 hr screen time that it's a little under what I expect out of a note3.

solution to low battery life
It doesnt seem to be a problem since my old note 3 had the same battery life.
A tip ill give u is to try to turn off the wifi every while...
And also try to use this app: screen filter
It reduces battery life by lowering the brightness.

I have similar issues however I get a little better battery life as I have basically turned off every good option on this phone in order to make it last . Ive concluded that this phone has terrible battery life due to Android 4.3 and higher sucking up the battery unnecessarily .. the background processes are endless and truly destroy the daily longevity and options of this phone. Take a look at the Note 2, same battery, different operating system and more or less same hardware and out of the box the note 2 lasts WAY longer than the note 3 (at least from my own personal experience). Frankily, if it was possible, I would love to downgrade to 4.2 (or 4.1.x) to see how significant of a change the battery life would be. Thats my 2 cents

Retail Verizon Note 3
running Hyperdrive 8 with patches to fix settings ask
stock kernel as I don't have a dev unit
and it is used moderate to heavy with video streaming to my Chrome cast.
I use greenify and es task manager to disable auto starting programs. I see many more reports of other people getting 20 hours with 4 hours screen time.
and it doesn't really matter but could cpu scheduler is ondemand with i/o being row

that just adds more evidence to my theory... the android 4.3 OS is a battery sucking operating system when it doesn't really need to be.
I never had a problem with 4.3. I was running hyperdrive 4.3 with greenify, v6 supercharger, and a crap storm of other tweaks and xposed mods and with very little usage (didn't take a screenshot of screen on time) I was at 5 days 13 hours 43 min with 6% battery left. I tried to update to hyperdrive kit kat and had nothing but problems so I flashed stock nc2, upgraded to nc4 modem and have spent the last week (couple hours a night) modifying and tweaking. I'm currently at 1 day 20 hours 13 min with 4 hrs 15 min screen on time and I have 19% battery left. I would probably be closer to 25%-30+% but last night I decided to go all out with the cpu control and run antutu benchmark twice to test different I/o schedulers.

So do you think with a custom ROM instead of being on stock 4.2.2 will help me get more outta the battery?

Probably the first step would get better battery stats and find out what is draining your battery. Freezing app apps won't do much to save battery if your not freezing the ones draining battery. Also look into greenify you can hibernate apps that you need installed and to run frequently but can put them to sleep when you don't need them
Also I got rid of V6 and decided to do min free and kernel tweaks manually with Rom toolbox pro. Not sure if a fluke but currently I've had 2 hours of screen on time and only dropped 20%. That's as much a 10 hours screen on time on a single charge.

Did you flash to stick slot and flash nc2 before flashing hyperdrive or were your issues some menus did not work if so those have been patched and everything works now.
I had wakelocks that lagged my phone (500k+ in twelve hours) and ran the batter almost dead in that time. Yea I flashed nc2 upgraded to rsl8 and updated the modems. Just didn't feel like trouble shooting anymore and with xposed I can have everything I want and biting I don't

Post/discuss your battery life!

Post your battery results and discuss how to make it better :good:
Let's hope Kirin 950 is efficient because with the right setup, Mate 7 does well and I see no reason why Mate 8 should be much different.
See how Mate 8 owners compare, once the phone is in your hands and rooted etc.
I run LeanDroid and Kinscreen, phone is rooted and Google de-bloated.
Here's where my Mate 7 was at this morning.
the biggest worry is as always the modem...they drain a lot battery.
not many people think about it since it is "hidden" statistics

The best apps for battery life?
Running on lenovo,Huawei mate 8,Note5, S6
Epic battery for me yesterday, first full charge, performance mode on all day, 19 hours up time with 6hrs39mins screen-on and 11% remaining when I turned in for bed. Looks like 7 hours screen-on over a full day should be doable, in a straight line I would think 8hrs+.
Similar again yesterday, 18hrs on battery, 5hrs 20mins screen-on, 23% battery remaining.

Your battery life does not say us anything unless you are using wifi or 3g/4g ?
you would see that in the mate 7 thread people using only wifi would get very superior screen on time while we normal people using 4G
would get more realistic battery life around 4-5 hours.
I hope you do not use wifi since that consume a lot less power as you might understand, and the modem
is a "hidden" battery drainer which is not shown in battery statistics ( I wish it did )
Mostly on WiFi, but if I contrast with other devices we can still make a meaningful comment.
My Note 4, in the same use, would not reach 4 hours of screen-on time. Neither would the 6P that I had. The P8Max would hit around 5 hrs.
So far the battery life here is best I have experienced on Android.

IF you have been using mostly wifi I would be little bit worried about the battery life when using 4G for data.
Also the software is still in early phase ..so big improvements can be made still in most areas.. battery life and camera etc.
battery life also depends on your usage pattern concerning apps. independent from wifi vs 3g/4g ull get far less SOT if u use cpu/gpu intensive apps all the time. so a direct comparison with other devices from the same user with identical usage patterns makes sense

Mind posting more screen shot of battery life of your usage? I am very interested. Battery chart + sot. Thanks.
I'm sure with time and people getting their hands on the phone, battery life will only improve. I avg 1d 4-5 hours with 6-8hr sot on my note 3 with 4g but the phone has been out for a long time
The Note 3 had pretty good battery life, from memory when I moved to Note 4 there was a reasonable regression there.
After a couple of charges and latest firmware update my battery life has been stunning. Yesterday/day before yesterday I went 36hrs on a single charge and had 6.5hrs screen-on. That's totally unprecedented on Android for me. Today I am down to 60% and have had 4.5hrs screen-on. For me at least is a new high bar for Android battery life.

Yesterday's battery report - 18hrs on battery, 7hrs20mins SOT, 17% remaining (another hour and a half or so or SOT for general use I would think). Indoors, WiFi, low screen brightness etc, but nevertheless destroying every other Android I've ever owned. Spent 50mins playing some emulator games towards the end - Wipeout Pure (PPSSPP) and Fire Emblem Path of Radiance (Gamecube game in dev build of Dolphin). They got the phone warm and were, as you would expect, much heavier drains than browsing and so forth (probably more so than higher end native Android games as they stretch the CPU as well). For those interested Path of Radiance played seemingly perfect for the first level proper of gameplay, overclock set to 0.2.

No, sorry if that was unclear, that's a change in Dolphin itself. I'm a bit in shock at how well Fire Emblem is running on a phone.

System calculate time left on battery based on your usage in 7 days, if you use it a lot then system will shows that you have short life of battery, if you use moderate or low, then you would see longer time of usage. So You should check your real time on battery, when you use in similar way than in on 5.1.1 and then compare to 6.0.1. For me at the moment i see much better battery performance.

One more thing to notice is that the battery fares better in wifi. But suffers a lot in Lte or in 3g mobile network. I get no more than 3 hrs of SOT when connected to mobile network in lollipop, but 4.5 to 5 hrs in wifi. Could anyone manage to get better battery in mobile network in MM?? By now your phone battery would have deteriorated for those who have had it a while that whatever gain MM has would be negligible.
For those of us who got it at release day, battery health would be about ~95%.

Indeed, but no one is asking for Xperia Z3 battery either, where I could get around 8+ hours SOT with Amplify, Greenify and a few other tweaks. I no we can't let the battery drop slower when using the phone, but the main complain is the standby drop, which would give us more SOT if we could lower it. Really, my phone should not use power on anything else than be ready for calls, text and else the apps I set it to, like Snapchat, Messenger and so on when in standby and you can get this with Amplify and Greenify. On 5.1.1 I managed to get around 0-1% drop over 8 hours of sleep, so as I got more standby time, I would eventually get more SOT too, which made the phone still last a day.
The problem now with the high standby drain is that you can't really feel a difference (might be kind of ironically here) between using the phone or having it in standby as it still drains hell a lot.
nothing has changed in marshmallow since 5.1.1 . I am using for 2 days. the battery consumption is the same as lollipop. (i did clean flash of france mm)
I've noticed App Optimisation is using 7% of my battery.... Cell standby 3% and Android system 8% with screen nicking 50%.
Seems good, but i'm disabling App Optimisation and comparing over the next few days.
Haven't experienced any drain from mobile or radio signals or any other bugs.

You mean its better App Opt to be off rather than On?

What is your SOT ?

im getting arround 3:15 ,3:15 hours and its so awefull , how much do you get and what to do ?
You'll find that SOT will be a wide range without at least some defined criteria to follow. While usage (games and videos will simply murder battery) and cell coverage will play a huge role in the disparity, you'll also find a difference based on other factors like ROM (stock vs. AOSP/CM), kernel, time off the charger, phone's % awake time, etc. With all that said, 3-4 hrs seems to be the avg for many users who run AOSP/CM, have bad cell coverage, or otherwise poorly optimized phones. Those who do some optimizing (Greenify, Amplify, custom kernel, etc.) will find 4-5 hrs on avg. Those who do some heavy optimizing with their phone may find 5-6 hrs.

I don't have a screen on time, but think the battery is far to be so bad. Coming from an Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3 5.5, the Moto X Style (or Pure Edition) battery is better. And the fact that with a power charger it charges so quickly (70 minutes or so), battery is not an issue at all for me so far.
Phone is quick and great and I think the camera does a killer job, better than I thought it would. Screen is awesome as well.

what are your cpu settings and all that?
4-5 hours on stock MM
Best I've ever gotten, the phone shutdown less than a minute after this screenshot... Just over 10 hours of use, including about an hour and a half of airplane mode, and nearly 4.5 hours screen on time. This took keeping brightness way down and I was lucky not to have poor signal during the entire time.
Sad part is this seems impressive for this device... I came from a Moto G 2015 and it would go 18 hours of use with 6-7 hours of SOT easily, or a more typical day of 3.5-4 hours SOT over 16 hours of use and around 50% battery remaining. I never really worried about battery life on that device like I do now.
Seriously debating on going back, selling my MXPE well it still has decent value, and either grabbing a G4 or waiting for the new Nexus devices.

Battery life on LG G4 h815

Hi guys
I have just purchased a new LG g4 h815.
I am loving the speed, the looks and everything but I have an issue regarding battery life. I am getting a screen on time of around 2.5 hrs with moderate to heavy use, is it normal for LG g4 though to don't play any games or stuff . Previously I had used a Samsung Note 4 it had an amazing battery life, screen on time was around 3.5 to 4 hrs with moderate to heavy use.
Any suggestions to improve battery life I have turned off location services, auto sync and Bluetooth, screen brightness is @40 % but WIFI is turned on constantly
I have surfed a lots of sites and forums most of them are complaining about the battery life of this phone but still most of them are getting around 3 to 3.5 hrs of screen on time.

The only thing you can do is get back on lollipop. 6h SOT is pretty average score on lollipop

I have basically given up on this phone. Never get any updates (in Norway) and battery is very poor. The worst phone I ever had comparing battery. You should not have to turn off everything and tweak the phone and ask in forums to get good battery time. My father have a samsung brand and don't know **** about android or phones and have he's phone full of crap and never optimized it for anything and he STILL have great battery... Much better than mine. Weird right?
A thing I think, is that this phone struggle with WiFi. I have a lot of wifi disconnects and it gets very hot when it struggles with wifi. Sometimes when im at home I can have 60% left battery and not use it for a while and then suddenly have 40%...

Is it even real..??

That graph is horrendous. You need to check if the phone is real.
Download 'Lg From' in playstore.
Because really, I've never seen a graph like that!

Man, i dont even know what are you talkin' about. I just showed that it can last long, not just the 3-4h SOT like a G2. Imperium Rom and Kernel, Greenify, 15% Brightness, Amplified all Facebook(not Messenger) and Google Wakelocks with 3600s. The phone is a 2 momths old H815.
Regards
I really have no idea.. If one could use phone like u did.

Having just gone though the same hassles, I found the only way to get good battery life is to get the latest version of Lollipop (V10F-TWN-XX for me), root and install Greenify to hibernate hungry apps like facebook etc. I find my battery life is now better than my old G2. I get about 3+ hours SOT and lots of standby time. (Its 10:20 am right now, usage on battery is 3h 35 mins, estimated time remaining is 155 hours, 3 % use in last 3h, 28m screen on time) Previously my battery would have been on 50-60% by mid day, now its in the 90s.
I was almost ready to ditch the phone and find something else, which would have been a shame as I like this phone.
What I tried and found along the way:
- Use the battery charger that came with the phone, the charger that came with my phone had a different plug so I used another brand. This was charging my battery too fast and causing it not to hold as much charge.
- I tried almost every Marshmallow stock rom I could find. Nothing seemed to be that great with the battery.
- I disabled wifi when not in use, location bluetooth etc...went back to almost no apps just to see what was causing poor battery, but determined it wasn't anything other than the system.
Anyway, thats what worked for me. Hope that helps.
Great battery life on Genisys for BL developed by Ignacio R. No root, bloatware blocked, Hibernation Manager on board. It's not heavy used, most browser on wifi/lte, g+, youtube.
