Android Exchange sync blocked by company :( - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, so I need some help. My company has blocked all android devices from syncing with their exchange server and is only allowing Iphone and Windows phone to sync with the exchange server.
I have tried some of the OWA apps, but they are just not that good, and I really need to be able to sync my mail/calendar/contacts.
Is there any way to bypass this with an app or some other way, with a rooted phone that is, or am I screwed and have to use the Iphone?
I want to use my nexus 6p and not be forced to use iPhone...

you planning on losing your job?
be smart

You could try Mailwise, it will allow you to bypass exchange requirements.

Try mobimail. Its great for OWA. Syncs calendar and lets you search contacts etc.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=app.Appstervan.MobiMail&hl=en
plus as stated above, you are not bypassing security and risking your job

Touchdown has been top notch for me.

Touchdown at all the companies I have been at.

Exchange Sync plus sync with work

Hi guys,
got a little question.
I have got a exchange 2003 running which i sync to at home, which is all well and good, but i REALLY need my works outlook/exchange Calender syncing to my device too.
Now as far as i can make out this isnt possible. is there some sort of hack/workaround/3rd party hack for me to be able to do this? I cannot use Exchange sync with work because they are only using 5.5 and wont allow me access even if it did work.
any advice much appriciated.
How about just setting activesync up using the option "sync with 2 computers" Would this do it for you or must you do it remotely?
well yes this is the only other option i could think of, but that means i have to use rubbish pop3 to collect my home emails.
any other ideas?
OK, but I guess that I am not sure why you would have to use POP at home... Why not have the work machine and the home machine both use their separate exchange profiles, and activive sync the device to each one? Unless your home and work PC is a single unit that you share. I am probably missing something in what you are trying to achieve....
Your other option may be to look at using i Anywhere's "Pylon Anywhere" product, that provides some enhanced syncing capabilities and 'push' e-mail to the PPC device.
i would activesync to each one... if... the XDA's OS supported syncing to 2 exchange activesync's.. and if exchange 5.5 had any sort of mobile integration.
Mmmm...well I guess the way I work around it is that I have my mail eyc downloaded form exchange to the PC's and stored there. That way its only a local synce with each on the PC's. Does that make sense or am I still missing something...?

How about Outlook Sync?

Just wondering, any news about being able to sync with Outlook?
I do not use online e-mail. I would get this phone but only if I can sync with Outlook both at home and work (Exchange). Need Contacts, Calendar, and e-mail (if possible).
Has anybody heard anything about it?
I would think they will use HTC Sync... but just wonder if it will be available or not.
Thanks.
HTC Hero does that.. So I am guessing it will be supported or else there is an app (TouchDown) that will do the same thing..

I think you can be 99% sure this will happen. I don't think Sprint would release a flagship device that wouldn't be compatible with 85+% of the business users that would like to purchase.
I wouldn't worry, and as stated, the Hero does this, as does the Nexus One, so I'm sure the Evo will be fine.
I hope it supports active sync encryption. My company switched over to this just recently and everyone with android phones were hosed. They will not install Touchdown on the server either.
I haven't heard anything about android actually supporting this protocol, has anyone?

Most likely. I don't see HTC not doing so. Plus they just updated the HTC Sync for the Desire and the Legend.

You need to speak to your IT person to allow for both in the encryption policy. So the android is not hosed. This is still secure while allowing those phones such as Iphone 2G and 3G that does not have encryption capabilities. The Iphone 3GS does have this. You can also support by individual mailboxes as well so you can fine tune those who do and those who don't. There are a few ways to implement this. I assume you have Exchange 2007/2010?
Touchdown is not implemented at the Server level. It's on your phone.
If you are looking for a complete Exchange experience I would suggest looking at moxier mail.
www.moxier.com - it allows for Mail, tasks, calendar and contacts with lots of corporate features. Remote wipe, etc. I do not think that your IT admin should have a problem with this setup either.
HTC's own mail on the Desire, Legend EVO has more capabilities than the same HTC mail client on the Incredible. Not sure if Verizon is the one holding it back.
Lots to think about

I was under the impression Touchdown had a server-side plugin as well as an install on the device. If its just on the device I wonder if it would work for us. I don't have a device to test at the moment, I'm still rocking the TP2 and nobody here that I have access to really uses an android at the moment.
I work at a hospital and we need to keep all of our data extremely locked down. We can't allow any specific accounts to have less "lockdowns" than other accounts so it's not a possibility to tweak settings individually. I guess I'll just need to pickup an android device and try it out.
Moxier looks interesting as well, I'll have to give it a try once I get my hands on another phone.
Thanks for the tips!

Try using XDAndroid, and load it up to see if it'll work. I'm currently booting XDAndroid on my TP, and it runs fairly smoothly (when it doesn't, I'm sure its hardware faults with my POS device).

Anytime! Both these programs are very good as well as the built in extra capabilities from HTC phones. Unlike the Google N1 phone which does an okay job of Exchange Sync. HTC with Sense has a better Exchange interface as well as increased capabilities. It allows for server searches, etc. I have heard that the Google N1 doesn't allow for this or contact and calendar sync perhaps due to their strong ties to their own google contacts and calendars.
In regards to the Touchdown.
No Hassle Setup
TouchDown™ does not require you to run a separate program on your computer to forward your data to the phone. Simply install the product, configure it on the phone and get going in a couple of minutes.
Also Moxier has a nice interface. Both are very capable and will fit into any locked down environment. Both can take PIN requirements as well as WIPE devices remotely as well.
Good luck.

Sick and tired

Iem sick and tired of my SGS, its great pice of hw and great phone but sw boundle is pice of ****. PC app kies is most horried thing i ever seen, i tried lot of 3rd party apps but nothing works like i want to.
So plz advise me, is there any posibility to sync SGS with outlook via bt and automaticly?
I dont want much, i just want to sync contacs, notes and calendar. I DONT want to use g-services they are just joke.

some people are PARANOID about their privacy
same PARANOID people that will not allow BlackBerry to run in USA & Soudi Arabia, because their Security Service CAN NOT HACK the encryption used by Black Berry (although USA kinda of drop this issue, as they setup their own BBserver for the security services to tap into it)
Yay! for Black Berry
it's just a shame their phones are not up to my standards, i like the BB email service though.
Ditto on the BlackBerry thing. Cloud is the way forward. Fighting change is a losing battle. Privacy is important but so is keeping up with the times. I hope your issue gets resolved.

BINGO!
I Knew it!
LOL
personally i've been swaying away anyone using Outlook to use something else
Outlook is the worse program ever by Microsoft
Go use Lotus Notes instead if you want a real software that works and that is productive
For personal use i prefer Thunderbird, it's simply perfect
It's not all about security.
There are some simplicity issues here as well.
Syncing to Google servers, then syncing back to Outlook is way more complicated then just syncing to Outlook in the first place. What if he got no WIFI around, what if he got no APN or data plan is pricy as hell?
Simple syncing to Outlook is too much to ask for?

Agreed. But add your account in the Android Email app, avoid the Samsung "social hub", it is crap. I don't know why these manufacturers try to re-invent stuff already built into Android.
i dont have any exchange server at least for my own private/business usage, u just use outlook cos i em used to it, i need quick and responsible "office" boundle
and that what outlook is, you can spit at it but its true,...
i tried missing sync and it wont do the job for me

Exactly what I was going to suggest..
Although, one question you must also ask yourself, is how much do you trust your email provider. Remember, Google basically told China to go f* themselves. Many email server owners wont be willing to do the same.
You should also ensure you are using SSL connections to your email servers (most people don't). Because if you don't use SSL on your computer to communicate with your email server, the entire process is pointless, because they are more likely to read the traffic at your ISP.
You must also ensure that you are enforcing SSL in your browser properly (disallow HTTP connections from HTTPS), use plugins to always try to connect to SSL sites first, and checking that passwords entered are entered in HTTPS. Otherwise, you are wasting your time completely..

[Q] Direct Push

I absolutely love my focus with WP7, but my new office only supports direct push and they wont allow this hotmail connector thing.
Are there any plans to include this support in the upcoming release. I hate the idea of having to give up my windows phone because it wont support exchange like most other phones.

It does support exchange activesync. In fact it is THE only push email technology the phone supports (both Hotmail and Gmail use EAS).
thanks for the reply. I take it this means, I shouldn't expect a change and need to order a new phone.

That means your Focus currently already supports push email from your Exchange server. What you need is to talk to you IT admin about how to configure it (you will need to connect to an external exchange server address that is accessible via internet, not your desktop Outlook) and if you are allowed to do so (some companies add additional permission policy to limit the access). A new phone doesn't solve you any thing. EAS is not a new technology. It's been here about 5 years since old Windows Mobile 5.0.
So what specifically do i need to request since the current setup works with WM 6.5, iphone, and android.
There is nothing special need to be done on Focus. Exchange Active Sync is the same as on WM. iPhone or Android. The only thing that WP7 lacks, from what I read, is email encryption. If your company requires email encryption policy, it will not work. But again, Android never really supports email encryption either. So, if you have Android working (not using 3rd party software like TouchDown), you should be fine.
What exactly is your problem with your Exchange Sync. Outlook Hotmail connector has nothing to do with it. It is only required if you want to sync your non-Exchange Outlook calendar and contacts to hotmail.
Actually, I have only tried it with WM 6.5 and iPhone. Email does require encryption. When I try to add the settings to the focus it just says it outlook account info is incorrect. I had heard 3rd hand that people were able to get android going so thanks for the heads up. I was about to order an atrix.
I guess iPhone 4 is my only real option...
I'm willing to bet you just have the settings incorrect and your focus will work perfectly.
I work for Microsoft and I've had WM5, WM6.5, all of the iphones, and now a Samsung Focus all connected to corporate restricted exchange.
Our corporate policies are very strong, and yet our phones work fine. I can't read an encrypted message on the phone (but no phone other than the old WM can do that), but as far as connecting and downloading mail I think WP7 does it best. The only feature I believe is currently missing is threaded view, which I would assume is coming at some point.
My WP7 phone is currently connected to two separate exchange servers (MS corp, and outlook.com, which is similar to hotmail). So it's all possible.
What is it you're trying to do, and what's not working? Hotmail should work 100% since I believe they've rolled out direct exchange support for all accounts.
Thanks for helping.... Email works fine with hotmail, yahoo, and gmail. Its only when I try my outlook exchange mail that I have any issues. I have tried all of the possible permutations for setup.
I am not the only one with this problem
answers.microsoft.com/en-us/winphone/forum/wp7-sync/does-windows-phone-7-sync-to-outlook/48ae2598-f773-4b4c-87cc-54d8c5c012d2
pocketnow.com/windows-phone/how-to-sync-windows-phone-7-with-outlook
They both seem to point out the deficiency with the phone.
So you have ecncrypted corporate email and dont have a problem?
You've lost me a little bit. Which are you trying to sync to Outlook (the desktop application), or Exchange (the mail server system)?
If you're trying to sync to Outlook, then i think you're out of luck. But, if you're trying to sync to Exchange (which is what 90% of people will have Outlook sync to), then it should work. I read both of the articles you linked, and they refer to Outlook data syncing, not to exchange. At least from what I gathered.
The phone can sync any mails with exchange, but there are two limitations. Specific private encrypted mails can't currently be read on any phone I believe (I think WM6.5 was the last OS to support them), and the WP7 device doesn't support full OS and storage encryption. It is possible for an Exchange admin to require that setting, although it's not common. A future release should include device encryption.
So, if you have a requirement on the second, then it sounds like WP7 won't current work for you. But, if it's not device encryption that you're looking for, then it sounds like WP7 should work fine.
Thanks for your help. I am trying to synch with exchange. I'll keep trying to configure it. I've asked our IT guys for help, but they have never even seen a phone with 7.
When I setup the account, there is a setting for logs. Do you happen to know where those end up and how I might get to them?
I don't know where the logging goes, but perhaps the error message your getting can be helpful?
I ran across this page:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...exchange/7ccd6098-f9b5-44c7-84c6-2fd9e6a097f9
Which appears to hit some of the issues you're facing, and might provide some validation to the settings you're using.
Turns out your hunches were right, after escalating the issue for a week, the IT team came back and said "ooops" we forgot to add you to the list.
I put in the settings and everything works great. Thanks for challanging my assumption.

[Q] Windows 8 and Exchange Server

Hey Folks,
managed to install Win8 Consumer Preview without any problems..running smooth and stable on a medion AIO Touch Machine..
Also managed to create a domain account on that machine..
Question :
We have a Exchange Server 2003 in our local network..i tried to create a connection in the Mail app by adding an account -> Exchange, entered all the required informations and tried to connect, without success, after 2 minutes always failed.
Anyone an idea what could be wrong or is it just because of the consumer preview.
Or is it a thing because of SSL ?...
But there are no possibilities to configure them...
Any hint is highly appreciated.
Saludos
Sunny
Got the exact same problem. Looks like its ok at first since a green box appears to the left, and then it says syncing right before it fails and asks for further details.
Then i just get "[email protected]" not available. Think its just broken in the preview.
Same Problem with Exchange 2007.
I installed Win 8 on my Lenovo X220T. When I want to use the calender it tells me to register a microsoft account, but frankly spoken, I don't want to. So is there a way to directly add an exchange account, where all my calendar data is stored? And where do I add an exchange account?
Thanks!
What is weird is I had Exchange working fine by signing into the Microsoft Account and setting it up. But then I joined our domain, and now I cannot get it to connect at all.
It may be a glitch in this preview, but try un-joining the domain and see if it works for you then. I just did that, and my Exchange inbox is running again.

I couldn't find a way to not sign into a MS account before setting up my exchange account (but yes, after that it directly syncs).
This could easily be because this is a consumer preview, of course. But I have a MS account, so it wasn't a big deal to me. I signed in, and it let me sign into the exchange account.
But again, the odd thing is once I joined the domain, I lost the ability to set this up. When I left the domain, the exchange account worked again.
For now I'm just chalking that up to pre-release weirdness, and using it off domain.

Yes, Exchange 2007, uses SSL.
Attached is what the display looks like once it's up. Sorry for all the redacting, but I don't want to spread anyone's personal info.
The inbox is pretty basic, and your options are limited, but then I've not installed an Office product or anything, I'm just connecting through its normal interface, the way I would through Windows Phone or the like.
Going to try installing Office in the Desktop environment today I hope. No idea if that'll work at all.
Connected to 2 Exchange Servers
FWIIW I've got it connected to two Exchange Servers (a corporate 2007 system and a hosted 2010 system) and it is working.
A few notes:
Those that have commented here about having to first logon with an MS Live account (if joined to a Domain or using a Local User Account/Profile) I am seeing the same thing. Not real happy with this (actually I’m not real happy with a lot of App issues surrounding the whole “must use a Windows Live Logon/Profile to get the full features of this App approach but I promised myself I’d not do the rant in this post”) However once that has been done it appears that you can set up multiple accounts with ease.
Having corporate IT correctly set up Exchange Front-End Certs and Mobile Device Policies correctly are critical (and yes, I’ve designed a few Exchange systems in my time so I know some of the mistakes that can be made there) so if people are seeing policy-applied errors or sync refusal problems it could be because of the Beta nature of the app but I’d also would be looking at the Front-End or CAS server setups as well as currently deployed policies (depending on the version of Exchange)
Overall my impression so far is that the App feels remarkably like the original email/calendar App in WP7, which is a shame because what MS should be shooting for is an App that works more like the WP7 Mango version. Like that version I’d really like to see the following:
• Option to create separate tiles for each account or selectively combine accounts together at the users discretion (this feature kicks ass over the iPhone/iPad/Android options right now and I want it in Metro as well)
• Option to select Calendars and Colors that I want to use in the Calendar Function (right now I get every Calendar folder I have created on both exchange servers – hated that on the pre-Mango WP7 and hating it on WP8 DP as well
• Needs to work correctly regardless of whether it is a domain account, local account, or MS live account (seriously MS, this should be a no-brainer)
With only 36 hours to really bang on it so far I’m sure I’ll find a few more quirks but so far it kind of sorta works as advertised for me. Juts needs a LOT of refinement
