Reportedly this does not work on KitKat or above (4.4 and above). The bootloader is locked and can not be unlocked. The bootloader won't permit non-Verizon kernals to load.
I have not tried the above...but it has been reported on this forum and elsewhere.

You are correct, that's why I mentioned rooted phones. Nothing above 4.4.2 has been rooted and probably won't be despite rumors.

Root and bootloader are two different concepts.
Kitkat 4.4.2 can be rooted with towelroot, but its bootloader cannot be unlocked thus no custom ROMs.
So a rooted Verizon note 3 still can not install cm11 or any other custom roms.
The correct phrase should be bootloader unlocked phones are eligible for custom roms.
We now have root for retail versions running both versions of lollipop and we have a boot loader unlock that works.
Support was dropped because of no maintainers, and the unofficial builds dropped because of RIL/LTE issues. A couple of devs and myself are looking at it.

What is the difference between devices hltetmo and hltecan? I have a hltecan. Will we need CyanogenMod compiled for hltecan? I notice that recoveries have different versions for both devices. Also I am wondering about downgrading for 4.4 (when it comes) to 4.3. Is there a surefire way to upgrade and downgrade between 4.4 TW 4.4 CM and 4.3TW? I would not mind voiding my Knox counter. Just worried about being stuck or getting a brick for another 21 months on contract :silly:

Sigh. I would do anything to be able to upgrade and downgrade between versions. Even Knox counter. If anyone finds something let me know

I played around a bit earlier... The only firmware you can upgrade to 4.4.2 and downgrade back to 4.3 is the mexican telco one for the n900w8, however I had some issues but will play some more tomorrow when I get time. As for KNOX, it's just one of them things we have to live with I'm afraid..
EDIT: I'm gonna mess with the bootloader and see, doubt it can be matched/mixed to work with the N9005 but what's the harm in trying.

The harm in trying is a hardbrick.
Well yes there is that, however I am not overly fussed about it, as most HB's can be revived. I am aware of all the risks, so will be my fault 100% if I brick myself.
I upgraded my note 3 yesterday to android 4.4 with cm 11, using the probam rom.
I noticed that it lacked the s pen features, so i downgraded back to stock rom.
Download a stock rom and flash it trough twrp

CM is based on MJ/MK Bootloader. You could run Android 9.6 and it'd make no difference. It's all about the bootloader

Sorry. Can't understand exactly. What exactly means what versions you can run with a new bootloader?
MJ7 is the bootloader that powers CM currently. You need a bootloader to be able to boot into the operating system. Like a key into the phone.
If you upgrade your bootloader to a newer version aka NA6 it locks the phone. Therefore anything that runs lower than NA6 aka MJ7 won't work.
Think of it like, you broke your door, you got a new door and tried to use the old key. It no long works.

I know how bootloaders work. Isn't there a way to omit bootloaders from Odin tar.md5 updates? Once I/Someone figures that out I'm golden staying with my old bootloader. Currently on MJ1.

hi, can you elaborate?
i always thought samsung doesn't let you downgrade to an older bootloader. but if you install CM (not samsung official updates) the bootloader doesn't get updated so you can downgrade in the future.
unless you upgrade to 4.4.2 official samsung ROM and update the bootloader, then you'll never be able to downgrade again?

No, if you want to try out kitkat i recommend you to use a cyanogenmod based 4.4 like probam, it doesn't update your bootloader and you can just downgrade back to jellybean

I noticed the lollipop update is now available for the note 3. However I still want to keep root. I searched google and found this guide, but I'm not sure if its legit or works.

Not sure, but did you see Hsbadr post in android dev...it's a rooted stock lollipop rom
Pay close attention...that is for the N900 International N3 that does not have a locked bootloader.

It's not the international N3, as those are modeled "N900n" where n is a number. The N900 is a SIM unlocked US variant that works on GSM only carriers. (All US variants are N900(x) where x is a letter representing the carrier. No Carrier leaves x blank.)
*EDIT*
Just to reiterate, this won't work on the N900V
The point is it does not work for Verizon or Att with locked bootloaders.

If I understand correctly there is currently no way to install Janine ROM of you are already on lollipop right? I just bought a used note three but haven't gotten it yet to see which firmware is on it. In coming from a g2 where there were plenty of ways to root

If you're already on lollipop than you cannot root or flash any roms. You need to be on either 4.4.2 or 4.4.4 already rooted with safe strap installed to install the rooted stock rom
Oh so jasmine ROM is basically stock 5.0 with root? So basically I just need to flash his ROM and I'm good to go? I'm running 4.4.2 and have safestrap installed

As of right now, no. There IS however the possibility of returning to NK1 from 5.0, so if something gets released for NK1 and not 5.0, then that's an option.

Are you on 4.4.4? If not and you have SS, you can flash Jasmine Rom. Which is really just a stock lollipop Rom with root.

Nothing past 4.4.2 can be rooted as of now, you cannot downgrade to an earlier version to root.

This is my first foray into the Verizon locked bootloader world. The first time I've had a locked bootloader on any ROM, actually.
Would a Developer Edition be noticeably faster than a non-Dev edition if both were running the same rooted 5.1 ROM?

Not sure what you meant by this?
I read somewhere the Dev version can flash any ROM for the Note 3, even using the T-Mobile ROM's (as long as you edit the APN)?
Anyways, the point of my question is, assuming the same ROM on both devices, does the Dev have a performance benefit over the non-Dev due to the Safestrap on the non-Dev?

A pre-rooted lollipop ROM that can be flashed from a kitkat rooted note 3 is a one time shot. If you lose root for ANY reason it is lost for good. You can not go back.

Is there a method to root an updated Note 3 for Verizon yet? I have tried like 5 different methods with none of them working. Could I be missing a method that does work?
No root for 4.4.4 and higher. This thread should not be in developer area.

How the heck is this rooted then??
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2760380
There is no root for 4.4.4 or above... yet. I'm not sure there will be, since everyone has moved on and Verizon does not plan to unlock the bootloader. Anyone currently rooted with a 4.4.4 or high ROM, stayed at 4.4.2 and then flashed a custom rom from there.

Pre rooted custom rom when they went to that rom they entered the danger zone. If anything requiring reflashing happens to it they can permanently loose root.
