Slow youtube stream on T-Mobile? - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This has nothing to do with the device, but has anybody noticed that playing a 720p or 1080p video on T-Mobile takes a while to load? Curious to see if anyone else on T-Mobile has noticed that.

Have you read the news recently? Specifically with Binge-On and to see if you're affected?

I have, but I'm on the grandfathered unlimited data plan. Didn't know Binge-On affected all users regardless of whether they have that service or not.

Check your tmobile account profile and disable binge on. I had to disable it.

Sadly but it does affect unlimited subscribers as well because John Legere wants everyone to "experience" binge on.

Didn't even see that you can disable it, thanks. Just disabled it, hopefully it won't throttle anymore.

Is tethering free?

I have T-Mobile, and they just put that tethering plan, however does that apply to the Nexus One and Nexus S? I hope not... please, need to know.

No it does not, technically it doesnt apply to any device, you could theoretically just get an app and use it for wired tethering and they cant stop you
I am talking about the native Android tethering.

Again no it doesnt, it would be illegal for them to stop you, because that would require them to snoop on your data and thats illegal without a warrant, so tether away, its just data your already paying for
Alrighty, thanks

Answer is right, logic is way off...
In the olden days of long distance, it was not illegal for your phone company to track your usage for billing purposes. They don't have to monitor or snoop, but track.
Data use would be viewed the same way. they are within their rights to track usage for billing purposes, and that doesn't require monitoring or snooping.
Hope this helps.

I asked the T-Mobile representative directly this very question when I activated my Nexus-S. She told me that the phone supports tethering, and that my unlimited data plan would not be affected at all if my laptop or other device shared the tethering connection. I pressed further, pointing out that Sprint charges an extra $29 for turning on tethering for the device, and she said that T-Mobile would not do that. I confirmed AGAIN that "unlimited" truly meant unlimited, and she replied that, yes, there is no hidden limit, that unlimited really mean there was no limit.
What T-Mobile seems to monitor is the User Agent of the web browser you are using on their data connection. You can modify your desktop's browser's user agent(there's a great thread on this in the MT4G forums, but I can't recall where it is at the moment) to mimic that of Android and they wouldn't know any the wiser.
As far as your question goes, the answer is yes and no. Tethering is not free. They charge money for that service. Can you tether and get away with it? Yes. I have tethered just fine, including torrenting a 1gb file without any issue. T-Mobile can, and has, blocked folks from tethering by redirecting you to their website. You usually receive a TXT message as well.
As far as unlimited data goes, and this might just be for HSPA+ devices, there is a 5GB cap. After 5GBs your connection may be throttled.

Only the government requires a warrant. Unless there are specific laws against DPI (I'm sure there aren't - yet) tmo can snoop all it wants since its a private entity.

It is if they're using your internet!
This whole thing about warrants or what have you is pointless because the data connection isn't your personal property. You don't own it. T-Mobile owns it. It's theirs and they can do what they want with it. You are leasing/renting/being a guest on their network. Same logic is behind why your landlord, or his appointed representatives, can enter your residence at will or why moderators on forums such as these can censor you if they so choose without worrying about "freedom of speech" issues. This is their property, not yours.
Also it's in the terms & conditions of your service contract lol.

ATT changes, can we just ignore them and still get voice and texting?

ATT sent me the nasty-gram that I need to get a data plan for my tab. I just need it as my phone, texting and wifi at home and work. I think someone mentioned somewhere that this is what Rotohammer ended up with since att got after his tab usage.
If I keep using it as my phone,
A. Will they shut off my phone, data or both? One csr told me they would cancel my account, somehow I doubt that.
B. If they kill data only, will I still be able to text?
Thanks folks,
Clankman

Great, another reason why this damn merger should not go through. Here they are forcing their own customers to change their plans, i can only imagine what they will do to former t-mobile customers. This is just a disgrace. T-mobile knows i am using the tab as a phone and all and i still have not gotten a message or call from them telling me i need to change my plan.

You are aware we'll just be grandfathered into our plans, right? Just like when anyone else makes a change to various services on their networks.
I guess we need to stand up against AT&T. How about setting up a date, spread the words, and on that date everyone switches to another carrier away from AT&T? I am sick tired of the dan ATT.

if that is the case well great, but how long would it be before they force us to change plans, how long before they notice that we are using our tabs as phones and force us to switch to a "data only plan"? they are already doing this to their own customers. these are the things i am worried about and the fact of possible higher plans for less. And did i mention the loss of tether? not that i use it but why would i be forced to pay for it if i ever wanted to use it when i didnt with tmo. there are just a lot of negative things, i do not see a single positive.

Good luck with that. I guess that you have never dealt with att&t. I have the uverse service with them and they continuously change my plan.
What I got today
So after losing my glasses and now I'm waiting a week for replacements, I can't see the darn Android phone so I decided I'd try one more time to get ATT to let me use my tab as my phone. I got a younger sales rep. She said the reason they are hunting us down is because we were on the iphone plan, even though I never had an iphone. I had the iphone plan back when I had my Australian HTC HD2. She changed me to the tethering plan, checked my account and says that it reads that I'm using the HTC Inspire 4G.
She said, swap it over and if they harrass you about it, which she doubted they would, then just switch back to the Inspire 4G. She said, they aren't searching by IMEI, just by that plan.
I switched back, I'll keep you updated.

I wonder how TMO will start catching those who thether.

We all know that part of TMO's "actual unlimited" plan means you can't tether. So I wonder how TMO's going to approach seeking out those people. Does your phone report the kind of ROM you're on to TMO? If so, that could be one way they find out.

T-mobile cannot legally look at your private data. They cannot look at what you're downloading or what you're using to download. What T-mobile does is look at the user agent of your browser to see if it reports you on a mobile or desktop browser, and they monitor the volume of data to see if there are any abnormal spikes. You can easily get around these by saying "all the data used was on my phone by *insert application*" or "I was using desktop mode on my browser, I wasn't tethering." They still have the right to suspend or terminate you but it's less likely.
This might interest you. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=26649587
just as what all telecom companies do,
log your network usage, browser
the can tell whether its mobile or not
From what ive been finding out tmobile filters the user agent
If I use my phone as a hotspot for my roku box I should be fine shouldn't I since I'm not using it for a laptop where theirs browsers useragents. Thanks!!!

Tethering
I have wondered for a long time why it is that providers care about tethering. As I see it it's all usage which is good news for them. I am with Rogers in Canada and tethering comes enabled. When I tether my laptop my usage goes up. Why do they care?

Because all the major US carriers charge you to use your mobile device as a hotspot. By using free or third party apps to bypass the carrier's hotspot add-on, that's one less revenue stream the carrier can make.
When I got my S3, I couldn't tether. Even tho I have a grandfathered plan with hotspot. And NO way I am giving that up! I did not try a different rom but was rooted and used other wifi apps and no luck. However, my G2 and currntly SR and T989 both work just fine.

Possibly another OTA soon arriving for International WiFi calling!

Article didn't make it clear on whether this was an OTA or this is a behind the scenes feature that Sprint will "flip on" on their side of the network. Interesting/cool either way.

That is actually very true. Hopefully we won't need another OTA and it will be a "behind the scenes feature" that Sprint can rollout to WiFI calling enabled phones.

It will likely be an ota to route called over WiFi rather than mobile network.

Yeah hopefully it takes away the need to ask for location
Great if it does, but the follow up question will be whether or not they will charge int'l rates for it.
If that's a no, that's a BIG win for me.

That's a very good question as it wasn't mentioned that they'd be "free" or count against minutes/texts allotments in that presser. Hmmm.....I just assumed WiFi calling would be free. Let's hope.
Also, to me this seems like it would be a backend routing fix and not another OTA.

Why? Many VoIP providers charge for international still. Grant it they are very low rates but at some point a cross-over has to happen still.
Does AT&T, Comcast or other VoIP providers give free unlimited international calling with phone service?
That said, this probably won't require an OTA, but maybe.
Your account has a feature on it called WiFi Calling and if you drill into it the thing specifically says USA/America, my bet is they just upgrade the feature code which allows the phone to actually pass the international call.
Domestic they give free because it technically rides VoIP anyway and you using your WiFi actually helps keep half the load off the network as only the receiving party puts load on it now.
International involves other companies/parties etc. who charge for this long distance type calls.
Allow me to clarify my original point.
I think international wifi calling (from domestic to international) will not probably change. It can but not by much.
The bigger question that I have is wifi calling from international and whether this will be charged international roaming or not.
Because I'll tell you that runs up VERY quickly, especially when you don't rent a phone.

Do you mean on a US Sprint handset WiFi calling from international WiFi location to US number (in US or in international location)? I think that'll be free.
I would bet calling from your US based number to an international number while international (ie, call hotel in Ireland while in Ireland from your Sprint WiFi phone) would cost $$ still.

Carrier throttling data on Netflix, YouTube, etc.

Not sure if everyone has seen or read about this yet but it looks like the major carriers are intentionally slowing your connection down through services that compete with there own media.
Here is a YouTube video that lauds it all out for you.
I tested this on my device and saw a HUGE slowdown through fast.com (the Netflix server test). YouTube seemed to be largely uneffected. But others on AT&T unlimited plans have seen really bad slow downs in both.
So just wondering a few things :
1.) Has anyone else tried this? Are you seeing similar issues?
2.) Is this AT&T server side or is the firmware related? I'm on stock current AT&T firmware, but had anyone tried this or seen different results on the U1 firmware? I know of the S7 EDGE the Tmobile firmware actually got the fastest data a peed results on AT&T service when I tested on that device.
Thanks.
Anyone on the U1 unlocked firmware try testing this yet?

Crazy how fast they stopped following net neutrality.
Has anyone tried on the unlock firmware. I'm just wonder if it is server side or firmware related.
I'm not sure how this is news. ATT sent out tons of emails regarding what they call Stream Saver multiple times and provided links how to opt out if you want. Personally it doesn't bother me. I don't need the 1080P stream to a 5inch screen and its help bring the kids usage down by about 4M a month against our data usage.

The issue is I've competed opted out of it, and they are still limiting the network connection.
It also limits it when I got spot my phone and access it through a laptop or my chrome cast.
It's also a violation of federal net neutrality laws.

Claim internet speed by provider is up to 100MB , I have check and I got around 115MB all the time. With Fast.com I get 4.5 MB and on YouTube I have around 80MB. With my AT&T speed in my house I have around 50MB on Fast.com I have 4.1 to 5MB and on YouTube I get around 11MB.
So I don't know what is really going on.

Yeah it's like AT&T specifically targeting showing down Netflix. Soon BS if you ask me poetically mad peeps are dropping cable for Netflix
I haven't noticed a bit of throttling when I'm streaming Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, or Hulu using AT&T data... I don't do it a lot (especially since I can download videos on Netflix or Amazon) but I stream enough to be able to clock speeds. I agree it's not likely that it's firmware-related; if you're getting throttled, it's got to be server-side.

Im in the middle of a really poor service area where att is a roaming network so my tests are inconclusive.....

Or at least check it frequently to see what type of signal youre getting. Forcing LTE only may be helpful.
