AT&T - Atrix at "end of life"

Interesting post from the Moto forums today. This makes perfect sense given the way AT&T has been going the last few months:

Couldn't agree more. I have a close friend who works at a corporate store and all he says is that they are told to push IPHONEs. I tell him Fkuc you my friend, and then we have drinks.

Its one thing for a carrier to stop selling a phone after that, but if the phone is only supported by the manufacture for 6 months, there is a serious issue. Especially given that a bar has been set for about 2 years by both Apple and Google on Nexus devices, and that 2 years is the length of the average US contract.
I think this is being read into wrong though. AT&T most likely is just no longer selling the OG model, not Motorola discontinuing support.

I have not given up on ICS yet, but I think it is unlikely to come to the Atrix 4G. I realized that when I recognized the Atrix 2 was a cost reduced version of the 4G. My theory is that MOTO marketing f'd up big time when they over priced the Atrix and accessories. The Atrix 2 was doomed because the Atrix name was damaged beyond reclamation.
I don't see any new phone presently available that is significantly better and some worse. Posts like the one that started this thread hasten the day when I say, "enough already" and install cm7/9.

Following up on myself, I don't understand why Moto won't just say what their plans for the Atrix 4G and ICS are and take the heat and get it over with.

I'm a little surprised Atrix is getting dropped cause it was such a big deal when it came out. If Apple makes the iPhone 5 with a bigger screen, I'm getting it. Atleast Apple won't drop support for it. That's one of the reasons Android pisses me off. Stop making 200 different Android phones a month, and concentrate more on updates. You've got phones coming out that people forget about in a month.

I still do not regret purchase of atrix; thankful to QUALITY of dev support it is receiving. Even pre-Betas for atrix are more stable than final releases of my older devices (captivate and vibrant)
But for a general user who wouldnot think of anything beyond rooting...this is kind of abuse :-/

Guys its not MOTO. ATT has final say on all updates for its phones. Only way around it is the Icrap and A Nexus.

ATT is not the only vendor but looking at the update history so far, it would be too late to expect ICS for atrix considering delay in GB update.

I believe the statement this guy posted is true regarding the Atrix 4G and AT&T. If you look on the AT&T website you cannot buy the laptop dock anymore on either the regular store or the premier store. AT&T previously told me that when an item is removed from there instead of being marked "out of stock", it's gone for good. AT&T is selling off Atrix accessories, and I do believe they are done with the Atrix. Will they still sell it?...............sure, until the stock is depleted.............will it still be around for a long time?.............sure............the refurbs will be going round and round for years to come.
What is perturbing is that this phone lasted a measly 6 months or so, as was already stated. Nobody disputes that phones come and go, new models are released, etc.............what is messed up is that people who purchased "the most powerful cell phone on the planet" were lied to about the specs by both AT&T and Moto, one case in point being 1080p recording which we never got, and have suffered lack luster support from both entities.
I love my Atrix, and will keep it as long as devs are putting out new ROM's, etc., but I am up for an upgrade again in less than 2 months, and will look for something with more support. Unfortunately I am stuck with AT&T for the time being because I have a family plan with 5 phones on it, and who would pay early termination on 5 phones?

This is my 4th Android phone. Like someone else said, 3gs was supported for least 3 years. I think I want to try an apple phone next. We shouldn't have to rely on outside people/unofficial support for the next version of Android.

The reason they push a new product every 6 months or so is reflected on the attitudes of most android forums; never satisfied, always desiring something more from their devices. People make lateral device changes (Atrix to Moto RAZR for example) instead of upgrades because there is some level of constant dissatisfaction with their Android device. Companies such as motorola are catering to this, and making tons of money in the process. Why bother support a device for multiple years when people are willing to shell out gobs of cash for Android's 'flavor of the week'? It makes more money for the company and the carrier.
You have to remember that the carrier not the device manufacturer decides what phones make it to market. Apple was wise to keep their warranty and product support in-house, and their quality and support reflects as much. Other phone manufacturers are bent over the carriers' knee. The carrier dictates how long the phone is supported, what accessories are available, and how software updates get pushed. Apple was wise to circumvent all this BS, and look how many iPhone accessories there are in every store, how Apple pushes software updates via their own program, ultimately you get an overall better product that is supported for much longer, while still maintaining profitability.
I love Android as a product, but what an abysmal business model for an open source-based OS. The only thing that keeps me going on Android are the occasional product gems such as the Atrix and the unofficial support provided from devs around the world.
Lets face it, Android owners still look to Apple as the golden standard.

HTC One vs Moto X (Verizon)

I'll be getting either the supposedly "blue" HTC One or the Moto X on Verizon by the end of this month. We all know the Moto X is slightly underspecced compared to the One but supposedly it's got a massive slew of new features and the PRICE tag equivalent to a dollar menu item at McDonalds compared to a Big Mac; assuming that you can get it from Google Play for Verizon. (Sorry for the run-on sentence)
Here's what will make or break my decision.
If the Moto X does these, I will not buy:
Lag: I will not tolerate anything less than buttery smooth like the HTC One
Camera: If the rear camera is a complete waste like the Galaxy Nexus or Nexus 4 camera.
Bad Battery life: I assume based on battery size and slower processor that this thing will have admirable battery life, but you never know
Quiet Speakers: This one is 50/50. If the external speaker(s) suck big time then I won't buy. But if it's at least as good as the iPhone5 then I will hold nothing against it.
Low Storage: I haven't read everything there is to know about it yet but this thing needs to have 32gb storage minimum, whether it's internal or achieved by an SD card, I don't care. It just needs to happen. I'm sitting at 4gb remaining as it is with my silver HTC One, lol.
Bad Screen: Here's the major kicker. I've read the rumors that the X will have 312ppi and our One's are rocking an incredible 468ppi. That's normally an indication of how great the screen will be in real life. If the screen looks obviously worse, then I'm going to just grab the Verizon HTC One and call it a day.
Feel free to add any other things that would make or break your decision between these phones. All the while keeping in mind that the X is a few hundred dollars cheaper.

You know as much as we do, why compare.
Keep in mind the One is also likely 2x the cost of the X, if the rumors hold true - so hopefully the One is better in most of those categories.

My opinion is this, it won't sound as good as the One due to the boomsound speakers, but I could live without them.
Same with PPI of over 450, there's basically zero difference over 300, so again, a wash for me.
Honestly, if the bootloader is unlocked and the battery is decent (better than the One), I'll probably switch to the X.
I hear the software optimizations are awesome on it as well.

I personally don't see a reason to consider the X if the One is within your budget. Sure the X may be better bang for the buck but I wouldn't settle for decent when I can afford great.

Man. And here I thought it would be a play device that would replace the nexus 4. Guess not. Although the notification system and the google now thing is pretty cool. I want that on my One.
Edit: I guess it will be released as a dev/unlocked device, but doubt the price would be anywhere near $300 if it's contract price is $250.

Honestly, an HTC One Mini sounds better than Moto X.

What's hilarious is Motorola Mobility (a company owned by Google) won't be shipping the X with Android 4.3. Fragmentation is so bad on the Android platform that even a cell phone manufacturer owned by Google itself can't even get the latest version of Android on its own phones. I'm sure the US cell phone carriers are responsible, since it's coming out on all 4 major carriers. I'm not complaining or anything (4.3 is a relatively minor upgrade), I just think it's funny.

Dual core vs quad core you decide.
IMO this is a huge mistake from Moto.

I agree that it is stupid that this phone doesn't ship with 4.3. You would think Motorola would've been the first company to receive an early final build of 4.3. IMO if anyone wants this phone just wait until they release the Google Play version of it (if it doesn't have 4.3 then that would be pathetic)

I have waited months for the HTC One to come to Verizon I will not to turn back now. But really Moto X is a mid range phone, I want the best.

Too be honest, I am a little conflicted
Motorola should be commended for allowing customization on their phones (even if its just aesthetics). In my opinion every company should do this.
The specification are considered mid-range, for specification buffs this is disconcerning (and most of us here are spec buffs) but my question how much does it matter? My brothers Nexus 4 runs just as smooth as my HTC One and it has a slower processor. Dual Core vs. Quad Core, how many apps actually use all the cores?
720p vs. 1080p this will depend on if you can tell the difference. This is what I tell people when they compare screens, if you can't tell the difference there is no point of spending that extra money. The 720p def will save battery and allow the phone to run faster (less resources diverted to run the 1080p screen)
Active Display and Touchless Control do add unique functionality. Touchless Control will be really useful when driving. Active Display is definitely a good way to handle notifications and may increase battery life.
Price being the same gives the HTC One a huge advantage though. If the unlocked version is around the same price as the Nexus 4 then it could be worth it. But its somewhat unlikely since its made in the US (our minimum wage is $7.50 an hour while the workers in China usually get $1.50 an hour. HUGE difference here)
Though I feel Motorola is heading in the right direction. If they add options to customize CPU, RAM, Screen...etc. (which they can definitely do with their new Texas factory) or even options for different material panels (I know they are prototyping wooden backs at the moment) this will go somewhere. Price is the biggest problem right now and to be honest I'm not sure how they will be able to solve it.

I love the X, at the price point though I'd rather buy the One.
I think a lot of people feel the same way, but I certainly hope it succeeds anyway.

Lenovo is buying Motorola Mobility from Google

TechCrunch has confirmed reports that Lenovo is buying Motorola Mobility from Google. This is the division within Google that the company purchased in 2011 for $12.5 billion. Motorola Mobility will go to Lenovo for $2.91 billion.

Pretty sure at least some if not all of the patents included in the Atrix are a part of this.

Google brought Moto just want its patents in case others contestant own them, now sold some of patents, and using Lenovo to against Samsung.

I think it's good, Google needs partners and vendors needs android. So, Motorola was a problem. This answers also limited availability of Moto X and Moto G. Motorola under Google was "undervolted" because vendors

I guess Motorola is now considered a "low end" cell phone company. That's all Lenovo does is low end business. They just bought IBM's low end server business last week. Our company supplies us with Lenovo laptops, they suck.

It's amazing how experiences can differ so greatly. My last four business laptops (including the one I'm using right now) were Lenovo ThinkPads. They were the best laptops I've ever had (and I had many). I even kept one as my private laptop. If for some reason I had to buy a new laptop right now, it would be a ThinkPad. A lot of my peers here share this opinion. I've never heard anybody complain about a ThinkPad, ever (well, except maybe girls, because they're "too black and ugly", lol).
I know next to nothing about IBM's server line so I can't comment on that.
Back on topic. I don't really know what to make of this deal. So far Lenovo has been making reasonably decent smartphones but there weren't many and they weren't really marketed too much. Maybe they're looking into changing that, just like buying the ThinkPad line from IBM was in fact their way to a more global market? Not quite sure what Google is getting out of this.

Google is washing their hands of a money-losing business whilst keeping control of the patents (which is what they really bought Motorola Mobility for in the first place). Lenovo gets the Motorola brand name and marketing contacts in North America. Probably a pretty decent deal for both.
I've got an interest in the china phones available and the Lenovo smartphones, whilst not groundbreaking in any particular way, are very well thought of.
I don't think anyone can claim that they produce nothing but low end phones, either:

Snapdragon 800 chipset, 2GB memory, 5.5 inch fullHD screen, LTE support, Gorilla Glass 3, 13MP BSI camera and large battery. Hardly a low end device! Certainly much more powerful and highly-specced than any phone ever released by Motorola, in fact!
Similarly, I've never heard anybody complain about ThinkPads in the past as I've always thought that these are considered a cut about laptops from Acer, Asus, Toshiba and the like!

Exactly! Big G got it's share. The ThinkPad line was well translated from IBM. If they do the same with Motorola, it will do -at the very least- just fine with Lenovo.

Is the Moto X still worth it?

I have my upgrade this week on Verizon, I've been taking a very serious look at the moto X. Motomaker is one of the coolest things on the scene, as well as some of the moto specific features such as active display. The specs just worry me a tad bit when I put it up against something like a G2 which is in the same price range. Many say the specs on this phone are not a indicator of performance, and I actually like the feeling of the Moto X compared to all the other phones I've tried. So should I just throw my spec worry to the wind?

This phone can easily do anything you want it to do. Hardware specs are not a key decision factor here. It is powerful enough.

Don't focus on the specs! I just left a Note 3 and switched to the Moto X ... Don't regret it one bit!

I just did. Came from the HTC One about a week ago and no regrets! No difference in performance on daily tasks and Active Display is the best new feature I've seen in a long time. I did go with the Developer Edition though.

Maybe read the 20 other similar threads....lots of opinions there that I'm sure many aren't going to repeat again.

I would stay its still worth it because the price has done down too. Its a great phone and runs fast and smooth but its also a good deal at almost half the price of the other flagships of its generation..

This has been the best device I have purchased in my four years on android phones. I've had the GS4 and HTC one and this phone IMHO performs just as good if not better.

Don't focus on the spec's. Focus on how it performs. My X performs great. Despite having a Samsung Galaxy S4 in my drawer for work that I could stick my personal SIM in and use, I PURCHASED a Moto X Developer Edition for Verizon in early November (two days before the first price drop, when there was no other option to get 32gig X on VZW).
Also keep in mind, if you plan to root, the Moto Maker and retail Verizon Moto X have a locked bootloader which can not be unlocked. While SlapMyMoto 1.0 works to root phones on 4.4, It has a few steps, including flashing older roms first, etc. In reading this thread -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2538896&page=69 there are reports that root can survive the 4.4.2 update, but it appears the "write protection disable" provided by MotoWpNoMo doesn't survive. Therefore the Developer Edition Moto X for Verizon, which can have its bootloader unlocked and is quicker/easier to root, might be worth looking at.

I have always been about the latest and greatest smart phone and wanted the best specs. When I got the X, I was skeptical. I am now a true believer in that the greatest specs are not needed. Go for the X.

Mine is arriving tomorrow con UK!!, I'm ****ing excited!!. I bought even know in Lenovo bought Motblablabla!!, I don't care I have MotoG and happy to have it so I don't wanna think tomorrow when I'll get MotoX between my hands on!!

Agree with all previous comments - I'm coming from a HTC ONE X, X+, ONE, and even a Sony Xperia ZL in regards to recent phones and the Moto X for some reason just makes me
The HTC ONE was really good in terms of Android phones and the build quality is still impressive. However, in terms of every day use, snappiness, battery life, integration of core services - the Moto X is nearly perfect (in regards to today's phones). Things can be always improved on any phone (screen if you need text to be razor sharp / camera if you are a vampire that only takes pics at night), but considering all the promos and the decent support from Motorola to keep their customers happy - it's worth taking the risk and seeing if you like it (not to mention you can always return it)!
There is paranoia from people regarding the Lenovo deal - who cares. I'm in the tech industry and will probably have a new phone next year anyways. If the Moto X2 is awesome I'll buy it even if it's owned by Lenovo. If something else is better, then they'll get my business. Who cares - just enjoy what we have now that is awesome...and that awesomeness is the Moto X.

I bought two Moto X's and can say unequivocally that they are the best phones I've ever had - and I've had cell phones from the very beginning. Don't focus on the specs - focus on the user experience. The size, performance, battery life and feature makes the X a first-rate product.
Plus, building it on MotoMaker is really cool.

I say do it unless you can hold out til the end of Summer for the "X2" lol. I left the N5 for this when I got in on a promo for it over the holidays. This is my favorite Android phone so far and I've had a lot! Nexus S, Galaxy S2, Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy S3, HTC One, Nexus 5, and probably others I am forgetting lol. The extra features like Active Display, Touchless Controls, and "Drive Mode" are super cool. This phone performs just fine given the "midrange" specs and the fact I customized the colors to my liking makes me like it even more.

I love my moto x and believe that it's worth the money to purchase outright without a contract. With a family of 5, I've had a LOT of "flagship" phones. After receiving my Moto X, I'm thinking about giving my S4 to my 14yr. old son and buying another Moto X for my business line.

I'm debating the moto x too...I might need a new phone cause mine is bricked but i cant help and think a new generation of phones are coming out soon

Best phone I have owned. Very snappy. Love all the extras, like twist to open camera - no more tapping away to get a picture.

In Germany you have to pay 759€ for the version with 32GB.
Sorry Google but I just did something I thought I'd never do: buy a Nexus from last year instead buying the very best Google has to offer.
For 245€ I got a 32 GB Nexus 5x. A good upgrade form my 16GB Nexus 4 which I loved so much.
Sure, I get it: let's just price the Pixel nearly the same as an iPhone 7 but for a company that's doing 'its very own phone' (hello HTC) for the first time this price is just nuts.
I am so angry atm but I really want to hear your opinion on pricing. Except daydream VR this phone has simply nothing that stands out from the competition and now please don't come with the 'best camera in any smartphone'. I have waited for a big nexus upgrade for years now and I can't believe that this is ruined by a price that's beyond good and evil. I kinda waited the whole time for 'one more thing'.....the pixel will support Andromeda via USB type C in the future or something similar but no.

You'll love the 5X if you are coming from the Nexus 5 (Specially because of the Fingerprint sensor). But I must confess the only cons is the RAM. Nexus 5 have much more free ram because it's android x86. The 5X consumes much more ram and, hence, it redraws more apps.
Also, the hi frequency of the cores in the N5 sometimes gives a good boost of performance, but that's more personal, and I still prefer 5X's SoC, because the 5's SoC used to thermal throttle and decrease performance often in summer.

I was burnt by the low ram on the Nexus 9 so I'm giving the 5x a miss. It will be the one plus 3 or a Nexus 6p if I see one at the right price. Thanks for the suggestion seb. :highfive:

You re right I tend to confuse x86 with 32-bit. I'd meant 32-bit

I think it would be cheaper to buy it in the US and pay the taxes.

Bummer that the pixel is so expensive. On the other hand though, Google allows you to finance the phone so I MAY do that. $649 up front is too much, but $27/month is fine.
I'm very interested in the new google assistant because I use google now a lot. Also, I use google photos as well so the free unlimited storage is very enticing.

It doesn't look like you can do the financing option in the UK yet.
For anyone in a location in which the financing option is available is it possible to upgrade after a year? One nice thing about the Apple upgrade program is that even though it is a 2 year agreement you can upgrade every year provided you return your old phone in good condition which shouldn't be too hard as it includes accidental damage cover.
Obviously if you only upgrade your phone once every 2 years either would be fine, but I'm a bit worried Google will actually work out twice as expensive as owning an Apple device if you upgrade each year...

Bought the wife a 5x on sale 6 weeks ago for $199 shipped (new)
I've had a nexus 5 since release in 2013.
Was chomping at the bit for the new Google phone.
Was hoping no more than $499, nope.
So bought a moto g4 plus yesterday for $249.
Only 2 gigs ram and 16 gig storage but has an sd card slot.
Much better looking display than the 5x. 3000 mah battery.
Unless you need a lot of ram for gaming or whatever the moto is a good choice.

My EXACT thoughts, as well. I recently made the switch away from Android for the first time to see what all the fuss was about with the iPhone 7. So far, I must admit that I am very pleased with the phone. Especially with how seamless it is with my Mac. But I was still anticipating the Pixel launch to see what Google had to offer. The phone itself looks great. But what you mentioned above is the big thing preventing me from returning the iPhone and getting the Pixel phone. With the iPhone, I'm locked in for two years but when the new one comes out next year I just take this one into the Apple store and walk out with the new one. It's a really great concept.
I'm afraid you are right about Google. I imagine if they were going to have an upgrade program, they would have announced it when discussing pricing to help justify the extremely high price point. Without that and with the resale value of these phones being about 50% 12 months after purchasing (based off what I've seen from the recent Nexus phones), the total cost to upgrade to the new Google phone every year just skyrocketed compared to what it used to be with the sub $450 nexus phones.
Because of this I'm having a very hard time trying to justify picking one up. Which is sad considering this will now be the first Nexus (i know... "Pixel") I haven't purchased after initial release.
EDIT: After wasting my afternoon reading tons of articles about the phone and watching the first few "hands on" videos, I decided to bite the bullet and purchase the 5" Pixel (Black, 128GB version). I have 3 more days to return my iPhone 7 for a full refund so it was either do it now or face the possibility of regret and be stuck with this $850 iPhone.
I still think the Pixel is overpriced but it does look to be an extremely solid phone. And I opted for the 128GB version to give myself a little future proofing. I'm planning on holding onto the Pixel for 2 years this time around, rather than making a quick phone jump again next year. This mindset helped me justify the price. Hopefully I can stick to that plan.

The pixel is so average, it has nothing my £300 OnePlus 3 doesn't have. Google's phone is overpriced and about as naff as their new bull**** chat app, Allo. Not impressed. Sub par. And those prices? Google has shot right up the ranks of overpriced **** to join Apple and Samsung. Ludicrous.

another thing I want to mention: Google spoke all the time about how Hardware and Software works together in this phone, especially with the Google assistant but hell, we all know that the assistant has nothing to do with hardware. It's just Android 7.1 and exclusivnes. Plus most of the talked about 'features' were just apps you can get in the playstore.
Another thing: if I buy an iPhone for the same price, I kind of know that I can sell it after like 11month for about 75% of the original price. NOT so with the pixel plus Apple provides the longest software updates. Just remember how freacking long the iPhone 4 was supported..!!
I am happy if my upcoming 5x would get fully featured Android 8. Even now when Android 7.1 seems ready they said that first betas can be expected by the end of the year..??!

I'd suggest the honor 8 if you want a one handed phone that's cheap and great quality

Me too, bought the Moto G4 Plus for 266 euro`s a week ago and its working perfect for me and has a front firing speaker. I`am never paying more then 400 euro`s tops for a phone again

Nexus was never about premium feel. It was nexus just like an iphone is iphone. It was for people who wanted more from their device, who liked to tinker it, play with it. In short having a nexus meant you own your device and at affordable price.
Now with newer, pricier and premium pixel, they may hit new customers who like premium devices, people who change phones faster than seasons change, but they lost their fan base, tinkerers, developers. Most of them are students, young part time workers.
I feel pixel is just an iphone made by google and i m hugely disappointed. It may offer a great experience for user but as an android enthusiast, I don't see it's worth of that much money.

I was really interested in replacing my Honor 6 within the next months, but honestly, with those prices, I think I'll either stick with it, or go buying the Honor 8....
Sorry Google, but this is just too overpriced to be a *good* phone.

Any recommendations for 5" pixel substitute? I need something unlocked but can't don't want to carry anything larger than 5.

This sentence doesn't make any sense. The price has nothing to do with whether or not it is a "good" phone.
Quite frankly, the more I think about it, the more comfortable I am with the increased pricing. Over the years the Nexus sections of XDA have become overly saturated with kids whose parents bought their ~$350 phones for them and then they flood the Nexus sub-forums expecting to be spoon-fed everything without trying to learn things themselves from the plethora of guides and helpful posts readily available to them. All while refusing to contribute anything worthwhile to the community. It's gotten so bad that spending time in the Nexus forums has me wondering why I even bother anymore. Many developers have expressed the same feelings.
I'm really hoping the increased pricing of the Pixel phones will help keep the kids away and allow the Pixel forums to remain clean and full of people who actually like to contribute. Similar to how it was back in the early Nexus days.
