/system Won't Mount - Am I Bricked? - Verizon Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What I did:
Was coming from an old version of OptimalROM, that I'd somehow installed to the main slot in safestrap, but that was a really long time ago. I believe it was an N12 based ROM, as I have an old G900vN12 firmware file in the same folder from when I did it originally.
I downloaded the Deodexed newest Optimal ROM, did a full safestrap backup to SD, and then followed the directions (coming from KitKat) exactly to Odin flash the new ROM. It appeared to work, but I got stuck at S5 logo screen forever.
So, tried again. Same result. Tried with battery pulled, same result.
So I shifted to the directions to restore to stock via Odin, and I can flash Kernels and FW's fine, PIT files appear to work, but every time I get to flashing a ROM, it hangs on the system.img.ext4 install forever. I've left it for hours, it's truly locking, always right there.
I initially tried NCG version, which I think was a mistake, but I didn't know the difference at first and just went with the oldest one. I then tried N12, and still got the same result. I can flash (via Odin) Kernels, Modems, FW's, just not ROMs. Every time, it hangs on system.img.ext4.
I connected via ADB but all I can do is verify the device is connected, if I try to sideload or push anything it just gives me "error: closed"
So I'm lost now. I can boot into download mode and recovery (recovery only if I flash a firmware, if I've tried to flash a ROM it fails.) In recovery mode it tells me that "E: failed to mount /system (Invalid argument)" and I believe that's at the core of the issue here. I've tried to issue commands via ADB to remount, but I get the same error.

I've read some places that people have success loading the correct FW or ROM with the appropriate PIT file in Odin, but I've tried that like 20 times and it doesn't work. I think I just need to find the correct Kernel/FW/ROM to flash, but I have no idea what to try next.
Edit - I also tried booting into Maintenance menu and wiping everything (data/cache) in there before a fresh attempt to install the retail N12 and Oc4 Kernels and ROMs, same issue.
I feel like I've borked the partitions and the PIT file isn't fixing them, and that's my main problem, but I honestly don't know enough to know.
Can anyone suggest anything? I'd be happy to just go back to stock, even - I need a functioning phone. Thanks!

extract the pit file with winrar from the tar file, tick repartition and flash the tar file

Wait, which tar file specifically do I extract it from? I don't see it in any of the main tars or in firmwares either. I'm using 7zip, not winrar, if that matters, but I don't see why it would.
Edit - Nevermind, I found it in the Stock ROM file, I wasn't using that one because it said "Mostly for Dev Edition" but will try it now and report back, thank you.

Well, that didn't really make progress. I did the following:
Tried to flash the ROM with the pit file and the box checked, locked up
reflashed the N12 Kernel/bootloader
Rebooted into maintenance, cleared data and cache, factory reset, rebooted into Odin
tried to flash the stock rom with pit, failed
reflashed the N12 Kernel/bootloader again
Rebooted into maintenance, cleared data and cache, factory reset, rebooted into Odin again
tried to flash the stock FW only, with pit, locks on Modem. (tried with and without battery)
That's it so far. Is it possible installing the stuff for the new deodexed OptimalROM might have moved me past being compatible with N12 stuff in general, even though it ultimately failed? If so, which version on this page should I be trying to restore? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2784880

Well, I'm all out of ideas, so unless anyone else can suggest something, I'm going to reactivate my old Galaxy Nexus and pray I have enough in my IT budget to buy myself a 6P this week.
If anyone can tell me a good basic strategy to get a bricked S5 back from the dead, let me know. I can still flash Kernels, and boot into Odin mode and Maintenance. No clue what else to do, I've tried everything I can at this point.

Would still like to know if there's an answer here, I got a 6P but I'd like to use this as a remote or something maybe, instead of a paperweight. Surely there's SOME way to revive it?

Do exactly what you did HERE except also check nand erase all
Then when phone reboots to recovery and does the android updating when that is finished when the phone reboots pull the battery and reboot back to recovery and wipe data then reboot

hello, I have the same problem, any help on how you can fix my phone again?

[HOWTO] Flashing CWRecovery to i9000m & upgrade to ICS AOSP 4.x ROM from any version
Seems like there's little or no love for the i9000m here since I've left this section of the forum.
I'm still getting a lot of PMs by members of this section.
Apparently a lot of people had their questions gone unanswered, so here it is at last.
If you have the i9000m or any of the i9000 variants that have the extra letter, all you need to do is flash a stock i9000 ROM with Odin
...think about it, after all chances are if you want to install CWR, you'll be flashing Custom ROMs that are made for the i9000
so, why do it the hard way when resources for specific models like i9000m or i9000b are so hard to come by, instead do it the easy way use the i9000 resources that are available everywhere
Requirements:
Odin software
CF-root v3.7 JVP http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12651359&postcount=6
JVP ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=846913
KG3 / CM7 modem http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16528528&postcount=45
ICS flavour to choose from:
AOSP ice-cream-sandwich-sgs http://code.google.com/p/ice-cream-sandwich-sgs/
Teamhacksung CM9 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1363593
Odin flash back to stock in case sheet! happens
i9000m KG3 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16556856&postcount=138
Flashing Root and CWR via Odin:
Boot into Download mode (3 buttons salute)
run Odin
choose only these 3 parts
PIT = 512
PDA = CODE_I9000XXJVP_CL264642_REV03_user_low_ship.tar.md5
CSC = GT-I9000-CSC-MULTI-OXAJVP.tar.md5
flash it (Start)
note: you do not need to change your KG3 modem for Canada

}
wait for it to finish rebooting, and skip all those steps in the 1st time phone wizard
reboot back into download mode again
close your previous session of Odin
run a new session of Odin
select PDA
select CF-Root-XX_OXA_JVP-v3.7-CWM3RFS.tar
flash it (Start)
it will reboot again
Congratulation! if all went well you should see these in your App drawer screen
to make sure it actually works, go into CWManager, and select ClockworkMod
select reboot into recovery
if all goeswell you should be inside the orange ClockworkMod Recovery v3.0.0.5
Flashing ICS AOSP ROM
if you followed all the above to this point, might as well have fun and load ICS, but first...
in CWR make a Nandroid backup of your stock JVP with KG3 modem
in CWR select backup and restore
select backup in the sub menu, i'll take about a minute or two to complete
it will automatically go back to the main menu in CWR when it's done with the backup
select mounts and storage
select mount USB storage in the sub menu
now copy & paste the ICS ROM to your phone, and optionally the Google Apps, face unlock, etc
select unmount
select +++++Go Back+++++
select wipe data/factory reset
select wipe cache partition
select install zip from sdcard
select choose zip from sdcard
in my case i installed these:
- ICS_4.0.1_r1-Beta2-i9000.zip (AOSP) or teamhacksung_galaxysmtd-ota-eng.BUILD7.zip ("CM9")
- gappsv5.1.zip
optionally you can also install
- face-unlockv5-final.zip
- FuguModICS_GT-I9000_update-Beta2.zip
- bd-ics-bootanimation-flashable.zip
after the flash it will reboot on its own, let it do its ICS magic
Enjoy!
Troubleshooting
if your upgrade to ICS fail
do not despair...
just repeat the Odin steps to get back to KG3 stock + CWR
and flash another ICS build
also if you see the dreadful Phone-Warning-PC screen of death
just hold the 3 key salute buttons to go back, with the USB cable plugged in, to go back to Download mode and flash back to KG3 stock
Thanks! One of the best guides available.
Great job! I'm sure that'll help fellow canadian's with this phone who will want to flash custom roms...
Thanks! On my part, I had trouble to flash JVP directly from KG3. I hat to flash back KC1 (froyo) and then I was able to flash JVP.

Could you elaborate on what issue you had? Was it the recovery version 3e which was failing the file verification signature check?
Thanks!

I've had a similar issue with ClockworkMod's ROM Manager, see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=19867108#post19867108
I am currently on rooted Stock KG3. How would I get to KG3 stock + CWR, mainly for CWR?
Thanks.

I've spent mega hours trying to understand what is Samsung's Recovery 3e relationship to kernel, whether clockworkMod will install and replace it (considering the signature verification)? And does a flash back-to Stock via Odin return it to 3e?

I've been down the same path. Locking it down is a douchey move. When we try to flash CWM on UGKG3 (I have the same) it does not replace the original recovery. This recovery only works with signed packages which we don't have. You can find a file called recovery in 2 places on your phone. Under / and under /system/sbin. These need to be replaced by one which does not check for signatures. Something similar to what is described here. But our file system is different. I haven't poked around further but I think we can downgrade the entire system to a stock Froyo and the install CWM.
Let's work this out.
question
I have a custom gingerbread rom with a custom kernel and a i9000m modem.
Let say I make a nandroid backup and flash ICS.
Can I restore to the exact same state (kernel/rom/modem/data)? Will flashing ICS change my modem? What about the internal SD card will it get wiped?

Same question , I am now on ICS beta 2 and cm recovery 5.0.5.
If I want to go back to Amestris 2.3.5 ROM, can I do that just from nanodroid restore, or I must flash some stock Rom with ODIN, then flash root to get back recovery 3.0 ?
Thanks the best guides
Thanks a lot!
That Phone-Warning-PC screen of death is quite an annoying little bugger.

So any idea of how we can get around it then?
I tried the CM7 flash instructions, went into a boot loop and had to flash back the zImage from KG3 to get it working again. What can we try next?

Cool.
My balls went on vacation after the boot loop fiasco, I'll try again soon I hope.
I wonder what changes I need to make in order to just flash plain CM7.1 instead of the ICS build?
Also can this be done with heimdall on Linux?
Thank you again OP.
Thanks. ICS is great!

[Q] Big problem root gt-i9505

Hello,
*
I come to you because it has been more than 24 hours that I try to install an AOSP rom in my s4 Galaxy (GT-I9505)
In fact I have a big concern when I flash CF-Root-jflte Self-jfltexx-gti9505.zip (latest site chainefire) with odin everything goes correctly
But once back in android, not Rooted (lack binary ...)
-I tried several version odin (1.85, 3.04, 3.07 and 3.09)
-I tried on several PCs (Windows 7 and Windows 8)
-I tried several USB cables
-I made full wipe
-I flashed the PIT file from the stock rom 4.4.2 (version in my S4)
-I tried to put everything back to zero with a stock rom
*
Without success, my phone does not want to be Root ...
*
So I thought I flashed a Recovery
I tried TWRP, CWM and Philz-recovery and reboot before all began to flash, so do not even touch system
I tried several rom AOSP (11 cm, slimkat ...)
*
Could you please give me a little help here because I dry supplement
I'm bored here, this is my 5th as samsung and this is the first where I can not install CM 11
I do not understand why not traveling on wheels Recovery flash, they do not put error message but reboot alone and without flash
*
Ps: I've tried stock rom pre-Rooted to fasher with odin, it works, I have root but it does not address the concern of recovery
Sorry very bad English, it's google traduction
Are you sure you're using i9505? I have the same device and haven't any issue and the chainfire auto-root works very well for me.

Ok, follow these steps. Ignore anyone, if you have already done.
That's what I do and usually gives everything well.
Flash samsung stock rom, after reboot, open Supersu disable Knox, Turn device off, turn the divce on in download mode, flash the custom recovery (Philz or TWRP recommended).
Have you try this?

Why not just flash a stock rooted rom, and go from there. If it's the GPE there is a rooted ROM that fits that phone. That's what I did.

Soft bricked, can't find stock roms, it's been 18 hours, I'm slowly losing my mind...

SM-N910G, I flashed chainfire's auto root without first using the Dr K/PhilZ forced/submissive whatever kernel first.
I can't seem to find a normal stock rom to push through Odin without encountering a sea of dodgy download sites.
Can anyone help? Just want a 5.1.1 stock rom...
Even any of the other 5.1.1 builds like Simpl, I can't seem to find a tar file.
Any nudges in the right direction would be very handy.

If you want to return to stock.
Download Samfirm from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-tab-s/general/tool-samfirm-samsung-firmware-t2988647
Then extract the files and run the tool.
Then enter the model as SM-N910G and the region you are in (CSC)
Then tick the 'Auto' box and press 'Check Update' and the 'Decrypt automatically'
It should look something like this, I put INS which is for India.

Then extract the firmware from the downloaded file using an archive tool such as Winrar and flash it via Odin.
Or use Sammobile.
If you want to install a custom ROM you will need to flash a custom recovery, for the N910G I would recommend this one (TWRP 2.8.7.0):

Unless you do not care about downgrading to lower bootloaders. It works fine otherwise. But having it locked does suck if you want to downgrade. No way to do it..... Yet.
Thanks for the help fellas, I ended up finding "N910GDTU1COJ3" which I'm flashing with Odin now.
Next time I'll flash the Dr K kernel before I do anything else...
Time to update my sig as well

Download the twrp-2.8.7.0-trltedt.img.tar
https://dl.twrp.me/trltedt/
Flash it using Odin and your phone in download mode.

This morning I grabbed a stock ROM from SamMobile and flashed it with Odin, no joy, stuck loading for about 10 minutes. It stopped boot looping at least.
So now I'm following your procedure, I will let you know how I get on.
It's a shame I can't use ADB otherwise I could just flash the Dr K kernel and then auto root with chainfire's tool... I've gotta use Odin for now...
It's downloading now with a CSC code of OPS...

After ODIN flashing, when it hangs, pull battery go into stock recovery and do factory reset.
I can't extract the enc4 files, both 7zip and WinRar don't recognise it...
Tried downloading twice...
I'll go back to my SamMobile download and see if factory resetting will work as suggested by DS...

Stock recovery doesn't allow me to do anything, just hangs there with a "Downloading...." message under the green Android Icon.

So I've just tried a stock ROM I downloaded using this tool, still hanging when trying to boot.
V Frustruating, the stock recovery doesn't allow you to do anything.
I need to convert Dr K's kernel to a tar file somehow so I can flash in Odin... I'm on 5.1.1 and there is a known issue with the bootloader.

Check PM.
There seems to be some confusion here, people are telling me, even on other threads, to do a factory reset in the stock recovery tool.
There might be an issue with recovery then, because I've only got a green android logo with "Downloading..." on the screen, nothing else is available to me.
It's not like previous bootloaders I've used where you use the volume key to select options etc, I literally can't do anything except flash from Odin.
Yes I have tried to flash TWRP using Odin, it didn't work...
OMG... By random luck I decided to hold the volume up key instead of down key when powering on and hey presto I have TWRP...
36 hours of my life I want back!

That's how to boot into recovery. By holding Volume UP, Home Button while powering on.

stuck after factory binary firmware flash

Hi guys, I need some help.
I have a Samsung Edge S7 which lost the IMEI Number during some previews flashing process. I tried to recover the number by flashing the Samsung Factory Flash Firmware with Odin. At first all worked fine and it seems all perfect. Odin finish and my phone reset. How ever, once reset the device stucks with the screen attached.

I waited like 15 minutes but nothing happen. when I reset only the same thing happen. I can still enter the download mode again and reflash etc. but always stuck on this screen.
I also installed already TWRP and different ROM but than I am lost without IMEI Number.
does anybody has a tip for me? I would be happy...thx
not work new build combination maybe work !
Not sure what you mean @hasanben35
My main problem is that I can flash TWRP, root the device and install Stock Firmware without a problem. But than I am stuck with IMEI 00000000000.
To recover my IMEI I read that I need to flash the factory binary firmware and rebuild my IMEI (efs folder) but I just dont get the Factory Binary work. If I try to flash works but I stuck on the Samsung Logo with the messages from the screen I posted before (first post here). I circle now since hours between this steps.
I do not have a backup of my efs folder or IMEI and need to somehow recover my IMEI now.

Take the tar you created and flash with Odin using ap, again untick autoreboot.
Reboot into recovery wipe dallying and reinstall no_verity.
Reboot and leave for 5-10 for binary to set up and boot.

I managed to fix by reflashing the bootloader file in Odin AFTER the stock firmware. Hope this helps!

Thats what i need badly is SM-G930FXXS6 combination firmware for my galaxy s7 g930f can anyone plesae assist or help iv bren stuck for 1 and a half weeks frp on

I put my phone in a bootloop.

Yesterday I tried rooting my Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge using Odin CF autoroot with no experience at all. I did something wrong. When it wouldn't work at first and kept giving an error and "FAIL!" message I tried checking for the correct firmware so I googled my model number and found the one for my phone and downloaded it. I'm not sure what I did but my phone is in a bootloop whenever I turn it on and I can't go to recover mode, only download mode. How do I reinstall the correct firmware?
Please help me fix this. Hopefully I won't have to go to a store for repair...
Well u simply
1) go to sammobile
2) find ur model
3) download the latest firmware
4) extract the firmware
5) put the phone in download mode
6) open odin
7) connect phone
8) upload the extracted files to odin into there respective places
9) flash
the phone will automatically reboot after flashing is complete
NOTE: just be sure to flash model specific firmware.
flash stock rom with odin or use samsung software to fully restore original firmware

If I find the correct firmware will it just overwrite or must I remove the current one? I honestly have no idea how this works.
I had this problem once, you need to flash them Individually, one checkbox at per flash. The way to root ur phone should be magisk manager or supersu. First off you need twrp which is 3.2.1.1 that auto root thing in Odin doesn't work. Some custom rooms already have options for root so if ur a beginner it's best u try them.
---------- Post added at 11:09 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:02 PM ----------
https://dl.twrp.me/hero2lte/twrp-3.2.1-1-hero2lte.img.tar.html
Flash this as ap it's a custom recovery that everyone uses here. Then use the keys power home vol down to force restart ur phone. Then power home vol up the moment it restarts to reach recovery. wipe everything then Flash a custom rom from the forums. I understand ur frustration that the phone has no way to turn off at all
When I try to flash the twrp-3.2.1-1-hero2lte.img.tar.md5 file Odin stops responding.
Don't flash Md5.
Flash the .tar file.

The non md5 download only has a recovery.img file which won't go into AP.
u flash it as a tar file not as the img file, you cant use .img files in odin
do not extract the img just flash the tar.
Btw in Odin the autoreboot and freset time don't matter they don't do anything because if you still don't have an os or recovery it will still send u to dl mode.
once u flash twrp it will automatically boot into recovery no need to hold keys. Then wipe ur phone and install either batman rom (an s8 port with Bixby) or superman rom (stock s7 edge firmware) both have customized installers that allow u to choose addons features and root.
U install custom roms by going to install button then selecting the zip. Also 2 main kernels that most people use are tgp kernel and superstock kernel.
dude, you're so smart, dont know what you're doing and you flash something without any knowledge and preparation...
that situation is fully on you
https://prnt.sc/iyosdg
I can't flash this.
https://prnt.sc/iyot25
Or this.
recovery.img comes in a .zip and nothing else is in it. If I don't extract it how do I flash it?? The .zip doesn't show up as an option in AP.

Now Odin isn't detecting my phone in download mode. When it's in the bootloop Odin adds and removes it repeatedly.

if u flashed it with a green pass, u should be able to boot into custom recovery
power home and volume down for force restart
when phone shows s7 logo, power home vol up to reach recovery
It hasn't flashed. It stays on file analysis for hours.
It does that if your phone is disconnected and reconnected. Download the official Samsung USB drivers.
https://samsung-usb-driver-for-mobile-phones.en.lo4d.com/download
http://prntscr.com/iz109e
I've installed the driver. How long should this take? It isn't saying disconnected.
Flashing a custom recovery should only take 10 seconds. Custom rom 10 minutes. What is the model of your phone check the back of ur phone.

G935P.
It stays on "File analysis." Does this mean I don't have the right driver? If so, how do I find it? I downloaded the one from the link you shared.
