Mega Review of the Xperia Z1 and QX10 plus Z1 camera vs iPhone 5S

It is available from www.sony.co.uk their own store. I bought it on Sunday and it got delivered yesterday. Just writing the first impressions with some photos now. Will be live in 90 mins approx.

Appart from the obvious 10x optical zoom, have you noticed any advantages on using the QX10 instead of the Z1's 20.7 mpix G lens 1/2.3shooter?
Are photos that better with the 1/2.3 18 mpix QX10? Is it worth? Or should we wait for the more capable (one inch sensor) QX100?

From my perspective the QX10 delivers much better quality photos. I would use it for stills not motion though. It has superior low light, nearly noise free, sharp and clear. However, it will be more convenient to carry once the spa-acx2 case is available, since you can reduce its thickness by removing the clamp section.
However, you have no real control over the QX10. It is designed to be used in auto mode. That is not necessarily a bad thing, but if you want proper control you need the QX100, which I will be getting soon. From all the descriptions by Sony, I didnt expect the QX10 to have such good low light photos. So it makes me wonder how much better the QX100 wil be.
I reckon it will be better manual control and slightly better quality optics.
The Z1 camera firmware really needs improving. The danger here is in 3-6 months Sony have addressed this, and the QX10 might only be useful for zoom. Somehow, I still think the QX10 will always take better quality shots though.

So, it DOES take better pictures than the Z1's sensor?

Better quality yes. Z1 camera has more fancy options due to its speed and effects

As I sold my HTC One to get a better camera phone I hope Sony update the firmware as fast as they can. The HTC One took very good photo's but the 4mp was lacking for detail in my opinion and it was nowhere near as good as my trusty 'old' Lumia 920 camera which I was very impressed by.
Going to wait a few months and see if the camera improves if not will seriously consider the QX10 with the Sony case for attaching it onto which looks seriously cool.

I am too thinking of swapping from HTC One to Z1 due to purple tint issue in the camera.
Though is it worth it to take the Z1 instead of other phones like S4 and G2 just for the 20mp?
Camera is important for me but the 170g and large bezel of the Z1 are crazy no?
Also what about the screen under sunlight?
Even if not as good as the One,is it usable for texting for example?

I wouldn't go back to the htc one. The z1 camera needs firmware tweaking. 20mp doesn't equal great shots. I wouldn't get either samsung . the z1 build quality is fantastic. Waterproof etc. No sunshine yet. So can't tell you. Texting etc is fine. Default keyboard can be customised. I think its swiftkey.

That is interesting, seeing as I purchased SwiftKey for the S4.
I must find some time to at the very least look at my Z1.
It arrived Wed so that is three days the package has sat waiting to be opened....

Trouble is if I do have a peek it will end up with me picking it up, then reaching for the rest of the box contents.....
The next thing I would find myself putting the phone on charge, and I just know although I would be sat working the temptation to keep looking across at the soft glowing red light waiting for the change to green would be just too tempting.
So no, not even a peek Gavin.

HTC One M8 Eye ownership

Hi, traded my trusty ol Nexus 5 for the be spoken M8 Eye. I have been a droid loyalist since the gingerbread days, have used HTC legend, desire , evo3d, galaxy notes, s4, Xperia ultra , nexus..but I swear by God this the best buy yet.
The HTC phones are sure built like strong German cars, and comparing to new iPhone 6, yes, m8 just tops it on handling and finish. The i6 feels like the older HTC one x.
Sound clarity is beautiful from the stereo speakers, SQ is there but it could have done with more loudness.
Out of box it came preloaded with KK 4.4.4 and the SenseUI is buttery smooth topped with good battery life.
Camera quality is all good, very snappy in locking focus unlike nexus5. My camera usage is very basic so not commenting much.

The Eye is great with the 13MP camera, I just understand why HTC omitted NFC and the Infrared port on it.

The m8 eye is a good looking device ! I like it...but I won't trade my current m8 unless it brakes jaja if it does I might get the m8 eye

Is the camera just more MP, or is it actually upgraded hardware wise?

Sorry, I meant is it different camera hardware. Or just more MP.
If it's the same hardware... Wouldn't the only improvement be you can blow the pic up a bit more.?

Do you even read the specs? both cameras, front and back are having 13mp and few differences between both...

I'm just curious, cause they can make it a thousand mega pixels... But still need better hardware for the pics to actually be "better". Know what I mean.
Able to print or view a bigger pic, doesn't make it a better pic.
I still use an 8 MP Kodak camera, cause the pictures are awesome. And I don't need to blow them up. ?

yea bigger MP doesnt mean better pics... i really like the m8 cam.. bot the front and back makes such good Pictures, i don't Need any other cam...i wanted to buy like my sister a dlsr...but now i don't want to anymore because the pics are enough good

Couldn't agree more about no need to blow up photos, and I have no interest in making posters with my camera photos. I think the pics the original m8 takes are great, but they needed to make the eye version to appease all those who felt more megapixels equals better. There are also those who swear their pics are washed out on the original, but that hasn't been my experience.

I asked cause my wife might be interested in an M8...and was curious if I should look for an eye... But I think the original M8 is more than good enough.... For a phone camera anyway.

It's not just about quality...it's the ability to crop since we don't have optical zoom.
Let's say we only needed 30% of what's in the frame and you crop it tight to get rid of the unwanted background or foreground....your 4mp image just became a webcam resolution image that's only gonna be good for mms!

Yes, agreed.... But that's for you. Your photo needs, right. Me, I point and click... And that's all I want/expect out of my phone.
More important things, I use my camera.
And quality is pretty important... Especially for what your describing. Even with many MP, blowing up a poor quality pic is just enhancing the poor quality.

FYI as per GSMArena specs the Eye is also missing the IR port & NFC compared to the regular M8.
Just thought I'd share this (again, see post 2) since a few people subsequently commented that the phones were identical sans the camera.

How to improve the Mate 7 Camera.

I think our phone doesn't have a great camera, but the sensors doesn't apperas so bad...so can be it a sw problem?
Do you think it can be improve by a new sw?

I've had no problems with the camera. The quality is very, very good (the first 2 pics are from the rear camera, the 3rd is from the front cam)

I rate camera very good as well.
You can use 4:3 mode instead of 16:9 and it provides slightly more pixel detail.

The camera is capable of some really nice quality shots. Example below

The camera is good, but the processing/software is not the best, using the app snapspeed you realize there is a lot more potential with the camera.
My biggest problem with the camera is it does not handle sunlight well, it will dim down the picture a sunny day will suddenly look like evening and darker instead... I do not have any solution for that..

I've not yet experienced it dimming my photos. But I can agree that it could probably be better, but my whole point is that it is far from terrible

Camera timer not working
Has anyone else seen this problem? It was working in the beginning but I think after root it stopped. It takes the photos immidiately without the timer.

I too can't find the "timer" ... Have set up the 3 seconds option, but when pressed the shutter, photo was taken immediately.
How to make a timer shot? Thanks.

I was impressed with the sharp focus and good detail but the images were dull. Simply turn up saturation and voila! Nice images. Does great close ups too. I really like being able to trigger it by saying "cheese" also.

What mode did you guys use?

As OP said, the camera hardware is pretty good, however the software can be improved.
I came from an iPhone 6 Plus to my HAM7, and I must say I very dearly miss optical stabilization. Color reproduction also leans to the dull side, but as previous posters have mentioned a few seconds' worth of tweaking in Snapseed will fix that problem.
Overall the camera is definitely not bad, and I adore the fact that you can get super close to the subject without losing focus (something I had to buy a macro lens for on my IP6). I just really, really wish it had OIS.

No Ram problem, Waterproof, Good Sound, Stereo speaker, LDAC for future compatibles devices, Good pictures for the back and front camera, Good Battery Life. And the camera does't go out as S6 or IPhone 6, etc...

I would like some full resolution samples from the front camera. In fact, I'm searching like crazy the exact resolution of the front camera all over the internet. How much does it's width and height measure? How many pixels?
It would be cool if you uploaded a screenshot with the camera app shwing the resolution settings to see the other resolutions supported.

Alright quick comparison with my Z2 - Z3+ and my QX30
There is of course no contest with the QX30 but I think the Z3+ produced a better pciture mostly because colours were better and light didn't affect it as much as on Z2

S6 leader in camera color reproduction, but in the video practically no difference. Very glad for Sony. At first LDAC then it, finally they began to gratify

I have a Z3 currently. If I will be upgrading, it will be the Z5 or Z5 compact. That premium version is hilariously huge and 4K gimmick is too farfetched. The power button is what I like about the new Z5. Features I am looking for is a big improvement on the camera, since it theoretically has an improved sensor. No pink spots on gray background please. I will wait for reviews before I bite--made a mistake buying the Z3 immediately for its camera back then when it first came out.

Being able to use the timeshift camera function and the dual pipes keeping the phone cool whilst taking pictures, also hope the improved camera module. I am upgrading from a Z1

An even better battery performance. Cause I wanna buy the premium and I'm a little bit afraid of the 4k screens battery consumption.

I like that they have added option of selecting MP in SuperiorAuto. And ofcourse camera and fingerprint sensor.

Z6 for me. I am gonna wait till they improve in camera software. Cause they don't seem to be doing well in low light yet.

They did good until they introduced the high 12800 ISO to compensate for the lack of OIS. It brightens the photos but it's blurry as hell.

Do you guys think development will be good for this phone? I had the Z3 but because of all the issues with the DRM keys and such i got put of and got an S6. The Sony was a brilliant phone so I do regret it a bit. I am very much considering getting this. Just wondering what peoples thoughts where.

For me it's definitely the camera. But i'm still waiting for the official start. After that I will read all the tests and then we will see if the camera is so good as they say.

Official font selector... it's only available to Japanese models/font, though.

I'm looking for speed and a fix for priority sound settings that doesn't work properly on the Z.
