Can glass screen only be replaced - X Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Unfortunately I cracked my screen the other day and just wanted to know can the glass just be replaced or is it always available as one unit glass/digitizer?

It's one unit I think.

Just use a heatgun to separate, but personally I wouldn't risk doing that

I work with maintenance of cellphones, tablet, PC's, Notebook etc and I can say to you, that's almost impossible... Only if you have a (really) soft hand, because the display below the touch and the glass are too (I say, too for real) slim, and the chances of break the display is too high... Don't try to do this alone as well.
Edit: the heat gun can do the trick as the @fingerprinted said, but honestly... don't worth it

Not to mention that once separated the chance of getting fingerprints, dust, etc between the LCD & the digitizer is huge. Once you have it back together and notice something in between your going to be po'd. The whole unit LCD + digitizer is about ~50 bucks, so I can't see trying to just replace the digitizer as being a good gamble.

Well so it was sad day (for my friend)
Battery ran out, and phone was turned off for while.
He charged it and ........WTF.
The screen dosent respond to any touch inputs.
It just quit working.
Please help me find one digitizer for cheap!
is it just the digitizer or i also require lcd or .....whtvr.
thnx.
I bought just the digitizer from amazon... And i might retirn itcand get the combo lcd+digitizer. Seems much easier to do.

It will be much easier to do them both at the same time how ever it is possible to just do the digitizer. I tried this with mine a while back and ended up cracking the LCD because i didn't want to wait to use the heat to separate the LCD from the digitizer. They are glued together. It is doable, just BE VERY CAREFUL.
I got mine from ebay and it fit and looked perfect. There are quite a few sites that offer replacements for good price.

A small dirt under the glass.

Hey. I got my tab from the USA and it works great. After two days, I noticed little dirt under the glass. I thougt its a stuck pixel but it is not. I can see it when the screen is black. It doesnt bother be and it is very hard to see, but how a small dirt got there?
Sent from my GT-P7510 using Tapatalk
Did you buy the tab new? If not, it might have had its screen or it's glass replaced. If the previous owner did it themselves and wasn't in a relatively dust-free environment, that could cause it. If the tab was new, it could mean that part of the screen isn't glued down as well as it should be. (You can test for this by pressing around the edges of the glass.) It could also mean that some dust got in there during assembly. (If the tab is new.) If it isn't bothering you, you can leave it. I don't really think it's worth sending away to Samsung. Apart from that, if it is a US tab, and you are outside of the US, you would have to ship it back to the US since the warranty is not global, but applies only for the country in which it was purchased. (This is tied to the serial number, so the US serial qualifies it for US warranty and disqualifies it for any other warranty.) Hope this helps.
I have the exact same thing. It's like a pixel sized dust. You can see it when tab is off under bright light. Noticed it 3 weeks after I got the tab. It is right below , left of the stereo input.
It looks like the dust is in between the protective layer and actual display. I did not know if these two layers are seperable. Not a big deal but would like to know if there is any fix.
My tab is brand new. I dont have warrenty in Israel but I can fix it here. Is the tab 100 percent dust sealed? I guess that dust and small dirt can enter any device...

I noticed it after 2 days. However, I can live with it. Most of the people wont even notice it.
Could it be the same as this

No. It is a pixel size dirt. Otherwize, this tablet is perfect.

The frame of my Tab wasn't fully glued when I got it. At least it felt like that, after a while of pushing it down from time to time it was fine. Maybe some dust got in there when the frame was coming out.
I had the same thing from the refurbished one I bought from Newegg. I called them instead of Newco and they told me to send it to them and they will replace it. So now the wait. I will keep you guys posted on what they do for me.
FWIW, it is not as simple as just removing the glass/digitizer from the display and cleaning it off. The digitizer (the glass on the front of the tab) is held in place by adhesive tape. The adhesive is about the width of the black border all the way around the screen, so about 1/2" or 50mm, the adhesive is also very, very strong. I'm sure you could get it off without damaging the digitizer, but it would be a long tedious process risking both the LCD and the digitizer itself. If you do manage to remove it without destroying it, then you clean it, and have to apply new adhesive, and replace it, and hope you didn't miss any dust.
Heat will help release the adhesive, but IMO there is still more risk than reward in doing this to a tab with a good digitizer. I have replaced the digitizer on my tab when it was broken, and I have got to say that it is a tedious process. In the end, I had everything as clean as possible outside a cleanroom, and I ended up with some dust specs under the digitizer. If it is under warranty, and you can utilize said warranty, that is definitely the way to go.
Also, the back side of the tab is not sealed at all. The glass should be sealed to the LCD, not the entire tab sealed in the back case. If anything, I could believe that dust could enter between the digitizer and LCD where the FPC cable exits the digitizer, there is a very narrow band of adhesive tape in this location. If it was going to fail, and let stuff in after manufacturer, I would guess it would be here.
Good luck,
Jason

[Q] Nexus 7 Screen cracked! Questions.

Okay so it's been less than a f***ing week and I've managed to crack my Nexus 7 32GB 3G. Hell yeah. Fell on a bathroom ceramic tile from 4 foot high and the corner bit chipped off. The entire touch screen works though, it's just the corner bit cracked.
SO ANYWAYS! I have a few questions for those smart guys out there that know about displays.
First of all, I've found out from the internet, that because the LCD and the Digitiser are glued together, I'd need to buy them together. Otherwise known as a Nexus 7 Display Assembly.
Few questions:
1) If I buy a display assembly from ebay for example, will it be of less quality than ASUS's original screen, or will it probably just be a part from ASUS anyways?
2) If I do buy this display assembly, will it still have the same number of Pixels as the original screen?
3) Will it have the same brightness, same touch responsiveness, same all that **** as the original screen?
If not, I may consider just repairing directly from ASUS, so...
4) How much does it cost in pounds(£) to repair the N7 Screen all in, taking into account my shipping fees from the UK?
Seriously need someone who has any experience of this whatsoever
I'm considering if I should repair this with the 3rd party screen and sell it privately if it's not the same quality, then buy a brand new one for myself. What's your guys thoughts on this? I really need some of your expert advice
I JUST replaced the screen on my nexus. I bought the display assembly from powerbookmedic.com, and the tools I needed from iFixit.com. All in all, it cost me around $200 in the States. The repair process was pretty easy, and the screen looks and functions exactly the same as the original screen. My only suggestion would be to make sure you have some good adhesive. I have a little screen lift now because the adhesive lost its traction when I took the cracked screen off the upper casing. Good luck!

Huh? Adhesive? We have to add adhesive? I thought adhesive was only to the digitiser + the lcd screen? I thought that it already comes assembled when you buy the part, because apparently you have to buy it together? If it isn't used for digitiser/lcd screen, then what did you use adhesive for?
The digitizer is indeed fused to the glass, but the silver ring you see around your screen is also fixed to the glass with adhesive, and that part doesn't come with the LCD/digitizer assembly.
The screen affixed itself to this upper casing on mine okay, but I do have about a millimeter or so of screen lift now which I didn't have before.

The best way to attach the new display is to use very thin two sided tape. you cut it in 1/8 inch strips. Apple it all the way around the bezel. then with a sharp knife run it along the inside bezel. Pay close attention to the thin bezel area on the left side ({where screen lift occurs) To be sure you do have it perfect in that area.. Ithe screen face down on cloth . Push the bezel onto the sticky tape (with film removed of course.. Turn device over and put back together.. LEAVING OUT THE TWO CENTER SCREWS or leave then very loose on the left side.(if you have a newer model of nexus these screws will be gone anyway). I have done many phone /tablet screens . If you can get it apart and back together you can replace the screen assembly..
No real need to send it to someone else nexus is easy to dissemble reassemble
Good Luck... Buy a full working 8 gb from ebay for 150.00 might be your best best....
Any clue How to detach the broken glass\digitazer\lcd from this aluminiun bezel?
I recently broke my screen as well. I saw on ebay only 2 options. First option is a screen only for about $50 which doesn't look like it will do anything for me. You the second option is a digitizer for around $300. $300 clearly exceeds the cost of a brand new device so that wouldn't make any sense at all. Even $200 doesn't make sense as I can buy a 8gb device for that and swap screens. I have the 16gb model. Does anyone have any cheaper sources for screen/digitizer that make economic sense?
Thanks,
Dan

It seems pretty pointless to me why you posted that in response to my comment about the chinese website because
a) It was a chinese website... I just needed some help because of the language lol
b) It seems we're only interested in the screen which is what was being suggested... not the a full device like you said lol
c) Your price is $179... his price for the screen was ~$120... so even if I was to harnass only the screen in your one... I'm still at a loss.. lol
Thanks for the try though!
Actually $179 for an entire new (refurbished) nexus 7 with 16gb more storage than mine is a very tempting option. I may choose to do that vs spending almost the same to import a screen from China, have to go through the hassle of installing it myself and hopefully do it properly and have it look clean and factory. If I did that then I could still hang on to my broken one in hopes that in 6 months or so the screen prices might drop to a more reasonable price.

[GUIDE][WIP][DIY] **UPDATE! VIDEO ADDED** Nexus 4 Digitizer and LCD Replacement Guide

So ive had my Nexus 4 for about 2 weeks now and i love this phone! i recently went to Dallas with my Mom and Sister over the weekend. Upon getting to the hotel, my Nexus decides to slip out of my hand onto the concrete. When i picked it up, it had a crack on the top right corner of its face. No big deal, right? Wrong! The top half of the screen is completely unresponsive. Good thing i brought my Galaxy Nexus to hold me off through the trip. Once i settled in at the hotel, I whipped out my laptop and bought a replacement screen. Judging from ifixit, it's going to be pretty hard to replace the screen. Would you mind keeping us updated on your progress here? I'm curious to see how hard it's going to be.
The glass is fused to both the display and the display frame. So don't crack the glass unless you're good with a heat gun, or you're fond of replacing the glass, display, and frame together ($$$).

Yeah, i ordered the entire front housing, (battery, display, digitizer, and frame) for a total of $186.72... I already have my Nexus 4 disassembled. I'm just waiting for the screen which should get here Wednesday. And yes, I will update this post as i replace the screen.

I'm really worried..
Hi,
I'm sorry to dig out the old thread, but i'm trying to fix my N4 of similar problem but i have a question:
Is there a way to separate the LCD from the digitizer? This way i can keep the LCD and get only the digitizer to save cost as my LCD is still working perfectly. In ebay, an OEM Digitizer+LCD assembly cost USD100+ (http://www.ebay.com/itm/LCD-Touch-D...e_Replacement_Parts_Tools&hash=item3cd597ce9d) but the standalone digitizer only cost about half of it (http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-TOUCH-S...er_Cell_Phone_Accessories&hash=item43bf9536ff).
All the instruction that i can find so far on the internet involve replacing the entire assembly.
Battery bending under removal
I'm also sorry to have to reply to an old thread, but I am in urgent need of an answer.
I recently cracked my phone's screen. I ordered a screen+frame repair kit, and got repairing. However, when removing the battery, When prying it from the phone, I realized that the battery was soft, and my tool I was using to pry it off was actually bending it. The battery seems to be curved overall, and slightly pushed on some edges. Also, a weird "sweet" smell came from the phone. Perhaps the smell is the adhesive that sticks the battery to the phone; I do not know.
Will it be safe to use the same battery again? Or should I go ahead and purchase a new one?
Wouldn't a hair dryer work as an alternative heat gun

I wouldn't recommend doing so as a LCD+digitizer assembly cists around $60USD I did not think its worth seperating them but you can use a hairdryer to soften the adhesive

Replacing just front glass and digitizer?

hey i was wondering how difficult it is to replace just the front glass and digitizer on my S7E? mine is cracked at the bottom, the lcd and digitizer are both good, but the crack is getting worse and pieces are flaking off so i feel like if i dont fix it it might end up screwing up the lcd. I can get a glass/digitizer assembly for about 35 bucks, but if i buy this am i going to be able to install it without f*kn up my phone? ive been looking at youtube videos n stuff and pretty much every one i see theyre replacing the whole assembly with the lcd, which is like $200, is it possible to seperate the lcd from the glass/digitizer fairly easily at home? or should i just let it be and not mess with it?
Hi to be very honest here I've never ever had to replace or fix the glass to my $7 Edge, my $7 Edge is on excellent condition but I'm thinking of one day either updating to the Note 8 or even Note 9. Have you got any quotes yet from repair places

On the newer phones is not really possible to separate the different layers on the display. (even back in the days when the layers where a lot easier to separate - it was hard, only on some displays and always the new layers started to separate leading to dust behind them and so on). You must change the whole screen as a one. Sorry... :/
Im a cell phone repair guy. Like stated above you must replace the entire digitizer/lcd assembly. They are pricey. If you have insurance it may be cheaper. Your looking at $200-$250 for a quality unit.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/LCD-Displa...hash=item4b178e5337:m:mtuyciust4Tmlx1CeklwU-g
Then you will want to get a good tool kit like so. Thats another $60
https://www.ifixit.com/Store/Tools/...pEP-Ge4NWU0H9RKOGFUtVKLOoWZ-d4BBoCMwkQAvD_BwE
Then you can follow this for teardown. Just remember you can damage more stuff when working the first time on something like this. It will cost even more money. It might just be better to use insurance or have a pro do it.

Well yeah its really hard to do it yourself, but changing only the glass is possible. I have tried it on my old samsung galaxy s6 edge. Although i have brought it to a repair shop which supports such change. They use a special separation machine. Try asking around your place. Btw, where you from?

So were continents away. Lol. Buy yeah its possible, with the right tools. You can do it yourself but its very risky. Some do it manually some use tools. Some separation machines use dry ice.
Also, remember that if you're replacing the entire OLED, glass and digitiser as a single unit, if you're buying a generic replacement rather than Samsung parts, the OLED panel in particular could easily be of inferior quality. Or perhaps not even OLED at all, rather a standard LCD replacement. I'd rather not think of this phone without the quality of screen it has, it's half the appeal and what makes it a premium device in the first place.
its possible, repair is done within 3h.
you can try it at home, you need slim cards and wire, but it's not worth the risk.
