Should I root my device.? - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all, I just got my Nexus 6p 64 gb silver today. I've checked few things and all are good. No complaints so far. Although I have to really check the battery. Cos with Lte since morning my battery us about to die and close to 20 percent now with 2.5 h sot. I have to see if I have to get replacement device although I am thinking to avoid it.
I have been a nexus 4 user for the past 2.5 years and I've rooted it on the first day as I bought it abroad and I am sure I cant claim warranty. But that's not the case now. So I was wondering if I go ahead and root or anything else I should verify before doing so, just to make sure I dont have to replace the device..
The rationale behind I want to root as early is, unlocking the bootloader will erase data and I don't want to lose too much of data. Which will happen if I root after couple of months..
P. S. In an other way, is it still possible to claim warranty if I unlock again.. Is the fuse blow rumors that started during device launch still false?
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk

Just a note.. This is my first cycle of charge and had nfc on most of the time (forgot to turn it off after initial setup) and had been fiddling with the camera all day long.. So I can still give some time for battery..

Unlocking won't avoid your warranty. The fuse is a hardware feature of the Snapdragon processor. There have been many topics about unlocking nexus 6p fuse warranty. Try the search button.

Yes I have done it. But some ppl still claim it's true.. Even xda which given first such article hasn't produced any update article saying it's not true. Thanks for the info.

Between a rock and a hard place...

Hello all,
I need some advice concerning my Nex4. As many people have experienced, I also have a slightly buzzing earpiece and now I'm in doubt whether to use my warranty and get a new one or not.
Since I live in Holland I got my Nex4 through someone else from a store in Germany, about 1 - 1,5 hours away to reach it if I want a new one. Since I'm 15 and not able to get there myself I'll probably will need to go through some quarreling with my parents to get them to driving me there.
The issue is that I'm not sure if I want to go through all those things, since the problem doesn't actually bother me. I can make good quality calls with a little of buzzing which I don't mind and I'm happy with my battery life: 3-4 hours of screen time on 1,5 days with medium usage.
I hope you can give me some counsel. Thanks in advance!
By the way, when I'm studying in silence I sometimes seem to be able to actually hear some high-pitched sounds, which I do mind, but I guess that's partially a placebo effect.

I just got a REV 11 device. it still makes the nose, albeit slightly quieter. With that said, these phones have build quality issues and getting a new one might be more hassle than it's worth. My REV 11 device has a slightly worse screen than my REV10 (lots of streaks on the the grey scale). Just keep that in mind.
Wait, REV 10 and 11? Did you already do this many RMAs or did I misunderstood the meaning of the word ^^?
Sent from my beloved Nexus 4
You misunderstand the word, REV is for hardware revision, a new revision comes with small changes. I got a REV 11 device and it's my first one.
Also keep in mind, you don't know if your replacement device is going to be any better.
Ah, thanks, any idea if I could check my REV?

Reboot into bootlader mode & it will tell your hardware rev.
I'm on unrooted stock. Any dangers and how to do it?

There is no danger in booting into fastboot made & checking the info. IIRC with the phone off hold volue down & power at the same time.
Thanks, I've got REV 11. I guess I'll stick with it.

Random Black Screen Flashes

I have owned a Nexus 7 2nd gen for a couple months now and have just started to get random flashes of black (occurs for not even a quarter second) ...
I am wondering what causes this...
I have not damaged the Nexus in any way and bought it brand new..
I have only used CleanRom and PA ROM...
The functionality of the tablet remains great, but the flashes are very annoying ...I have tried clean installing multiple times but the flashes still happen...
Any feedback/solutions would be a big help...
Thanks

The whole screen?
I've noticed black lines when playing Terraria for hours but its only the background of certains areas. I chalked I up as game glitches.
I haven't seen anything outside of that.
Give us some more details.

I had that happen soon enough for a return to be viable. Do some more Google searching and you'll find people who fixed this as a hardware issue. They had to open the back and fiddle a connection. Didn't sound to hard but I just went to best buy instead.
Happy hunting, sorry I don't have a link.

Yea I would exchange it before it is too late. Doesn't seem that troublesome but if it got worse, or worst, disconnected entirely, it would bring bad news.

Just because you bought it off ebay doesn't mean it doesn't still carry the 1 year manufacturer warranty on the hardware. It would require you to send it in, but worth a shot.
Once you pop the back and start fiddling with hardware, you run the risk of doing enough damage where Asus will void the warranty. I think I would check with Asus first before resorting to hardware modifications.

got my new s4 today and I dont even want to use it :(

I got my S4 today, rushed home to open the package really excited to come straight onto xda and root it, as I need to run arliberator app in my car and also titanium backup to get all my data over from my old galaxy.
Now I see that i cannot root it because of Knox and that even though it is unlocked after kkitkat I wont be able to use my foreign sims when i am abroad which i always do as roaming costs are extortionate!
well my S4 has sat here all day switched off and I don't even want to switch it on, its a useless brick as far as i'm concerned i am hugely disapointed and really wish I had bought the Z1 or even the old xperia z instead of this SamDung
maybe you are one of the lucky ones with an old boot loader .if your firmware is older than mgg like ending with mga you can root without voiding your warranty .

Are you not still within a cooling off period if youre not happy and want to return it for a refund?
I wouldn't rush out to get the Z1 either as there appear to be issues unlocking the boot loader as in the below link. Ive also had HTC devices were it was nearly impossible to gain s-off (having to perform a wire trick to apply an engineering hboot). If you check the HTC One forums there are people on a recent hboot who are unable to s-off as its been locked down by HTC, which can cause headaches when trying to flash certain ROMs.
The reality is Samsung just isn't making devices specifically catering for people who like to modify/flash custom stuff. If you want full control of your device with an easily unlockable boot loader, then get a Nexus.

2 questions:
1) What is your firmware? Old firmwares can be rooted fine
2) Even if you have knox, you can still root. You just lose your warranty. Are you ok with that?

I'm on MH8 4.2.2 so i'm affected before i even had a chance to set up my phone, I didnt buy it on a contract and i cant return it now.
Of course I am not willing to void the 2 year warranty on an expensive phone this new, no way!
The xperia boot loaders don't need to be unlocked to flash modded/custom roms if they come off a sony base rom so it's all good, better camera waterproof and a dev friendly company
so now then...Anyone want to buy this S4 from me?

You do realise that even if you didn't have the locked down Knox firmware, you'd still be voiding the warranty, regardless of if you used an app like Triangle Away, right? That's the risk everyone takes when rooting.
You've basically just come on here and opened a new thread to whine about something the vast majority of us already know about.

warranty is a fiction it dont protect against software bug bricks as there is no chance that you permanently brick your phome that way. it also dont protect for physical damages and water effects. if something is wrong service tell that is your fault anyway. so dont bother about warranty and root it

Umm rooting does not void your warranty. At least not here in Finland. The company is responsible for proving that the cause for say a hardware defect was indeed caused by the software and not an error on their part if the phone for some reason breaks down. They usually don't bother and just repair it under warranty.

there has been issues before on previous samsungs with usb connectors stopping charging, phone randomly switching off etc and who knows what might wear out on the S4 as its still pretty new, I'd rather not take the risk, also if you come to sell your phone and the buyer sees your warranty is void it will make your phone harder to re sell on

I've already accepted the risk. If something happens, it'd be very hypocritical of me to whine about something I knew could and did happen.
I know how easy it is to flash back to stock and hide evidence of it being rooted and customised. I've been doing this since the G1.
You won't find me opening a thread when I don't like something. Especially when it could have been prevented by doing a little research before buying the phone.

Here in the UK, it's kind of the same. Yet companies here will still try and point the finger of blame at custom software when it's clearly a hardware fault.

[Returning the Note 7 due to locked bootloader]

All 3 of my Note 7's are going back!
I'm curious to see how big we can get this thread and I hope it makes a statement.
Dumb T-mobile...becoming ATT and Verizon. Actually with the S7 and Note 7 stunt with locking the bootloader, they have...
Such a shame. We bought the phone so it should be ours 100% to do what we want with it. Wth is this? A lease program you're pulling?
Sorry, but I along with many others will not fall victim to your rubbish tactics. I will not be a slave to your proprietary bs.
Who's with me?
Not everyone uses Samsung Pay. No excuses can justify being okay with the fact of not having full control over a device we pay for. It's straight up communist.
I'm solving the issue by not buying one. Period. As much as I love the phone, I will wait to see the new Nexux.

Yes I am seriously surprised at the number of people that thought it wouldn't be locked. It is like the whole S7 release all over again but this time anyone familiar with Samsung and especially members of XDA should have not been surprised at all.
Although i dont care about such things, i do think Samsung should unlock the bootloader. Once the phone is fully payed off you should have that option. I dont think anyone on a plan like Jump should have the option because those phones get refurbished and if anyone else has ever bought a rooted phone off Craigslist knows the pain when the seller messed up there phone and now is trying to pawn it off on someone else. Or maybe they put all phones that have the bootloader unlocked on a special list made to the public so people like me can avoid thise phones

The word, "surprised" would only be valid to some, but to most of the enthusiasts, it's not really that we're surprised, it's just that with the international variant (SD820's being offered in markets where there is no Samsung Pay) and with the out cry of the S7, it's not unreasonable to have had a little hope for the Note 7. Long shot? Uh yea, of course...but like I've said, this isn't the first time at the rodeo where we've been faced with the impossible; that became possible in due time.
Come on guys... Seriously? I love rooting and tinkering just as much as anyone... But you are returning all 3 because the bootloader is locked? I'm amazed you bought them in the first place if this is a deal breaker.

No not really, that is a potential lose but in actuality they will just go into the refurbished pool. 1000 phones is still nothing out of the 25+ million phones they will sell. That is based just on the Q2 sales numbers of the S7 \ S7E. The 1000 phones is only 0.004 % of 25 million phones.
Also returns are just part of everyday business and expected. Unless the return rate was a high percentage, it is just normal business to them.
Unfortunately our numbers and desires mean nothing to them compared to their own...

lol I know man, this is how I felt when I got the S7E. I said I was done with Samsung and would never buy a locked down phone. Well here I am with my Note7 knowing it was locked. I would prefer to have the option to root and flash custom roms if I wanted to but I decided to just stay stock which is why I was fine buying the phone.
There just isn't another phone out or soon to be out from what I have seen to match this. I am still keeping the Note5 for the wife so if I really get the itch to flash something, I can always do it on that one.

I am sure there is more to it than that but it is a different scenario than what we had with the S7. I would think that this is the most likelihood of the T-Mobile version getting unlocked. BUT with the reports of the F model getting the update that locked down it's bootloader, I think there is a good chance that they will all be locked down before long.

True, once rooted the update can't be forced. The value of the rooted phones could really go up since the supply will start to dwindle.

Been out of the G4 community for awhile but thinking about getting one (I found a deal that's pretty cheap on a working model) - did something change with an update that has now proven to be a problem for the bootloader and being unlocked?
I'll do more research of course but I figured I'd just ask and see if that gets me the info faster.
I had heard that over heating had cause some the bootlope problem.

Been out of the G4 community for awhile but thinking about getting one (I found a deal that's pretty cheap on a working model) - did something change with an update that has now proven to be a problem for the bootloader and being unlocked?
I'll do more research of course but I figured I'd just ask and see if that gets me the info faster.

it plays a role but this just makes the problem show up earlier. very slim chances if you get a 601 onwards.
It's 'dead' because of bootloader obviously. Bootloop causes people to go away from this phone, but we would have something left after them. We don't even have a proper G5 Port while G3 is rocking it for a year... More of that, we can have Nougat UX 6.0 port 'easily' but it requires experts to work on that. 2015 was a hard year for smartphones. Every of major phones was a flaw. G4 bootloop, S6 RAM battery camera, HTC M9 was bad at everytbing, Sony? It's just Sony who buys it. Till nexus 6p(which also loops?????) there wasn't a good phone in 2015. 2016 is much better. We got Galaxy S6 2.0(or did they call it S7 afterwards to increase sales? jk), we had HTC comeback in style, LG failed once again, OnePlus released their best phone. Compare those two years... 2015 is at loss

I took my g4 apart and added a small layer of thermal compound and a very small heat sink.
No over heating any more.

No, actually it's an F500S, oddly enough. Because I live in Las Vegas and we have tourists from all over the planet here constantly there's always a chance that when I buy a device from someone on craigslist it's either a lost one that some tourist left behind in a cab or at a bar or something or somebody flat out stole it from them and the risk is that it'll be blacklisted. This one I just bought for $35 is working, in good condition but with some cosmetic issues on the frame, the front glass it pristine without a mark on it thankfully. It was apparently sold by SK Telecom so it's the Korean model (I think, I literally just got home and sat down as I'm typing this).
I have no idea what it's capable of but it does have a PIN code lock on it. I put my T-Mobile SIM card in it and it connected fast so I know it'll work but I've got to do some research on either bypassing the PIN code lock or just doing a clean flash of the factory ROM (if I can track that down) and going from there. It could always have the Google FRP on it so I'd have to figure out how to get around that as well (there's always a way it seems, sometimes it's just a pain in the ass to do it but it can be done).
So, at the moment it works, no guarantees if it'll suffer from the bootloop, of course, but the serial number is 505KPMZxxxxxx and the date code on the battery is 2015.04.28 so it literally is a 1st production run model.
I know it could die at any moment, sadly, but I'll see what happens. I don't play games on smartphones so really the only time a smartphone ever gets warm because of CPU usage in my experience is running a benchmark like Antutu (which I'm just not going to do with this G4, I know how it performs already) or installing a ROM/the initial first boot which churns along like crap by design.
Wish me luck...

my stock oem its getting weak. i used accubattery and out of 3000mah it charges 1880mah.
still have another trend on 3000mah that last like stock.. i use fecebook app. since my carrier gives me 9GB and i must use the app not browser.. i get around 3 hour using data connection and with trend on i get 4 hour.
are you charging yours with battery in phone and stock charger or you take battery out and use a separate charger. they say our phone stops at 3000mah if you have 5000mah or 8000mah. wich battery you got?
