Downgrading from Lollipop to Kitkat - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have an S5 that came from T-Mobile with 5.1.1. I want to go back to Kitkat. I've tried flashing Kitkat roms and also Odin to flash stock firmwares, nothing seems to work. Am I stuck or is there a way to roll back?

Guess not

:good:

I had lolipop 5.0.1 SM-G900F yesterday and I can tell you that I succeed on downgrade. I now have 4.4.2 but there is one problem, Towelroot don't work anymore so if you want to downgrade your software you can do it by downloading it from sammobile. If you want root it without knox you probably don't find any solution, if you want to mind hit knox you can use chain-fire. I could not find anything that will root it without hiting knox.

Agreed. It it very doable to downgrade back to KitKat but the only thing I found to reroot is Chainfire as well.

Just downgrade to the latest 4.4 with ANE2 Baseband - so Towelroot will work without any problems.

If you are on 5.1.1 you cannot downgrade, downgrade was possible on 5.0.x

Joe is your phone rooted? I have the same exact same phone and have successfully rolled it back. If not rooted, here are some links to help you out and then you can flash whatever rom you like. If you are on OG6 use this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmo...t/root-kernel-root-method-fog6-5-1-1-t3178077 or if you are on OF6 use this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmo...t/root-kernel-root-method-fof6-5-1-1-t3158005 After getting root, flash a custom recovery like Philz Touch or TWRP and flash whatever rom you're looking for. Here is also a link to the T-Mobile section of this forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-galaxy-s5/development Everything you need is there.

[Q] (Noob?) question - stock 4.3 to custom 4.4 rom

I've been trying to figure this out for the last day, with no success.
I've got a rooted Note 3 N9005 (MJ7) stock. this is a 4.3 Rom. Knox status is0x0 (didn't trip it when I've rooted it ages ago).
I had enough of sammy rom, and I want to play with some of the new 4.4.4 custom roms.
I'm totally and utterly lost regarding what's tripping knox, and what are the needed steps in order to achieve that.
From what I understand, flashing TWRP (or any other custom recovery) will trip knox. I'm fine with that.
I'm not sure if I'm supposed to first upgrade my 4.3 to an official 4.4.2, and what / if is all the lock/unlock bootloader which seems to differ between versions (4.3 and 4.4). There also seem to be different versions of TWRP depending on if you're on 4.3 or 4.4?
Can I simply flash TWRP on my rooted 4.3, backup, flash new shinny 4.4.4 rom, and be happy ? Will that keep the root ?
Otherwise, do i need to upgrade to official 4.4.2 version first? will that lose root and I'll have to reroot the new version, and then flash TWRP and then flash 4.4.4 roms?
Any kind of help (or point me to an article that discusses it, even though I didn't find any, and i've searched) will be highly appreciated.
Cheers and thanks in advance.

If you aren't concerned about KNOX, upgrade to a 4.4 ROM (Official) via ODIN which will upgrade the bootloader, then once that's all done, flash TWRP for 4.4 then download your ROMs and flash via TWRP as normal.

Not concerned any more ...
Out of curiosity, what exactly kills the root? flashing a rom doesn't. upgrading via odin ? I'm assuming it has nothing to do with the system/cache, since each flash usually wipes them, so, where does it live?
Cheers

Reflashing the ROM back to stock is what kills root. It's easy to re-root again once you've tripped KNOX anyways.
But tbh, once you install a custom recovery after you've upgraded your boot loader, you won't need to root. It isn't required for custom recovery
Sent from my Spectrum ZX +2
EDIT: Have you used ODIN to flash stock images before? If not, have a read around, it's pretty straight forward though.

I see ... so -> flash stock (kills root) -> flash TWRP (trips knox) -> flash custom rom without worrying about root ? (wouldn't i need it for titanium backup ,or do custom roms come with SU preinstalled?)
Yep, used odin. file on comp, download mode, couple of ticks, clicky clicky, happiness ensues ...
Yeah you're pretty much spot on. Yeah most ROMs are pre-rooted and if they aren't you can just flash superSU via your recovery. But you should be good to go and know what you're doing by the sounds of it.
Enjoy flashing them ROMs and make an efs backup and store off the device too. There's an adb script for it here (forget where but its here, development thread I think) don't use any apps from the play store as they are notorious for bricking Samsung devices.

lol ...notorious for bricking samsung devices ... i like it ...
i ran one already (zipped a 6MB and a 14.5MB image and tar into a 300kb zip), and been told you can do that from inside TWRP as well ...
I'll take a deep breath, and start downloading the official image and roms ...
I'll update if i'll get to the other side
out of curiosity ... does it matter which official 4.4.2 image i'm flashing ? (i'm getting the NZ one ...but i assume they should all be similar, and / or that it doesn't matter since i'll be flashing something else on it anyways, right ?

Safe downgrade from 5.1.1 to 5.0.1?[UPDATED-MM]

Hello guys,
I want to try new update but,if I upgrade to 5.1.1 can I later go back to 5.0.1(stock one)?
And any bugs on 5.1.1?I read something abot fingerprint on lockscreen?it true? "
******************************************************
We got new update for N910C,is someone try to flash last bootloader and go back to COH4 or even 5.0.?
********************************************************
Ok now with MM 6.0.1 we can back to 5.1.1(CPB3) but no to 4.4.4
Dunno can you downgrade but, i had fingerprint problem and lag after lockscreen. Full wipe and deactivating smart lock(it was activated by default) seems to solve everything for now.
Pa:it was happening on mobile data.
Yes you can downgrade from 5.1.1 to 5.0.1

I guess you need to do some steps to revert back to KK , you wanna downgrade from major firmware to another not simple update like 5.1.1 to 5.0.1
be sure what u doing or you may get in bootloop or something worse.

Don't think so.
it was said you cannot downgrade as some security fix.
samsung has put some bootloader and that will brick your phone.
Anyway guys from here can make some hope.

Downgrade to Stock from OF3

Hi, I have a rooted 5.0 phone on OF3 bootloader, and I'm giving it to a friend, so I wanted to downgrade the phone back to a clean stock version. Does anyone know what file I can use for this? I looked in the muniz topic about downgrading to NCE, but it warns not to do that if you're already on 5.0.

You need to go to sammobile or any other site with original firmware, and download a firmware for your model which you can then flash with odin. Don't forget to wipe data and cache.
The only one I see on sammobile is 4.4.2. I thought you can't go back to that if you have a 5.0 bootloader?

Should I upgrade to Lollipop?

I am sure you are not talking about bootloader unlock (exploit).
I am using lollipop now. I unlocked my sim when I was using jelly bean. Sim unlock is based on the phone IMEI. As long as your EFS partition is intact, you should not be worrying about that.
So if I do Odin/FlashFire to Lollipop, my phone will remain SIM unlocked?

Which bootloader are you on? If you're on MDL or MDB , do not upgrade to lollipop unless you flash the stock based golden eye or gold finger roms or any other AOSP lollipop rom. If you are on any other bootloader aside from MDL or MDB, go ahead and upgrade officially.
Your phone should remain sim unlocked if you use a custom rom to upgrade like the ones meantioned above.

Are you on safestrap? If you are, safestrap works well only in kit-kat. It is a pain to use safestrap in llolipop. I use fashfire instead.
Since you are on custom rom all you have to do is install flashfire and flash the rooted lollipop rom. The instructions can be found at here.
The instruction are written for the latest lollipop rooted rom (OK2). I stay with OC4. If you want to upgrade to OC4 do let me know. I will give you the link for the OC4.
All the necessary files and instructions can be found at here.
You might also want to download the NB1 firmware cooked by Muniz_ri. If you soft-brick your phone in the process or in the near future, that is where have to start with.
If you have questions please quote this in the reply so that I know you have a question.

If you are on safestrap, you might need to uninstall it first before you upgrade to lollipop.
Well OK2 was released after OC4 so it might have some better features. But I did not have a chance to be on OK2 for long to notice it. When I was on OK2 my back button stop working so I had to downgrade to OC4.

They did not make safestrap for the lollipop. Safestrap only works on NC1 kernel. So if you were on lollipop and safestrap installed, everytime you reboot you need to tap the proceed several time finish the boot. Also if you want to use the safestrap to flash something or backup, you need to run NC1 flasher to reinstall the NC1 kernel first. Once you finish your deed, you need to flash the lollipop kernel back. That was why I said using safestrap in lollipop is a pain. You can read about that in this forum.
Download and keep this NB1 firmware. If you softbrick your phone this is the only thing that can save you.
