Verizon - no data during phone calls? - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

On Verizon's network, all stock software. Sim was from Moto X that worked perfectly fine.
I'm unable to do anything that requires data while in a phone call. I have LTE coverage at the time of the phone call. Once a call is initiated, the "LTE" symbol goes away and just gives me a "!" symbol over the signal bars.
I'm assuming this isn't normal, as I was able to do everything on my phone during phone calls with older LTE phones.
Any insight?
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk

Not seeing that issue. Let me tell you what I have/did:
* Stock Verizon Nexus 6p (Sim from my old Note 4)
* Wifi turned off
* LTE Signal good before I start a call
* Make a call
* LTE Signal does not give me a "!" signal over the bars
* While talking on the call, run a speedtest
* Getting 26/6Mbps over Verizon LTE while in the call
Not sure what your situation is but wanted to let you know that is possible to do LTE data on Verizon during a call with this phone. Sorry I don't have a suggestion for you.

You need to activate Enhanced 4G LTE Mode pretty sure.

You need to have HD Voice activated on your account which is free. After that in the Settings/Cellular Networks turn on Enhanced 4g LTE Mode. This will enable VoLTE on the device without it you can not have data during a phone call. Most older LTE devices ie. 2014 and older had an extra radio for LTE which also had another CDMA radio so you could do voice and data at the same time with 3g or 4g. Since the late 2014 Droid Turbo (S6,M9, G4 are the same) the only way to voice and data at the same time is VoLTE.

nrage23 is correct. Be aware though, if you enable HD Voice and place a call while on 4G, the call will be dropped if you lose 4G signal. This may or may not be an issue depending on where you live.

I misread the replies. My test was with Advanced Calling Enabled and yes, that allows simultaneous voice/data.
Sounds like if the OP turns on advanced calling, all will be good?
---------- Post added at 12:43 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:19 PM ----------
Found this on the Verizon page of all places:
2Most 4G LTE Android smartphones today already support simultaneous voice and LTE data without HD Voice. However, some newer HD Voice-capable devices such as the Droid Turbo by Motorola do not support simultaneous voice and LTE data unless HD Voice is activated.

Activating HD voice in settings and in your my verizon account will fix the issue. I had the same issue on 3 different phones, and for all 3 of them this fixed it.

I noticed the same thing as the OP. I had Advanced Calling enabled and working with my 6P on 6.0, but now on 6.0.1 I lose data when making calls. I verified that enhanced calling is enable in the cellular networks settings and like I said, it's been enabled for a long while on my Verizon account.

I've had enhanced calling enabled since owning the 6p. If I understand correctly, there's something I need to do on my Verizon account also? Is this something I need to call in to activate, go in the store, or just go to my account online to activate?

If you're on a regular personal plan it's easy to enable, you can do it here: http://www.verizonwireless.com/landingpages/advanced-calling/, in your account or over the phone with CS.
If you're on a business plan, you need to put your sim card into an officially recognized Verizon phone (since VZW doesn't technically support the 6P) that *has HD Voice/Advanced Calling*, turn on HD calling in your online account or over the phone, and then pop the sim card back into your 6P.
On an unrelated note, I guess I'm going to try reflashing my radio to fix my VOLTE 6.0.1 issue...

I fixed the issue by disabling HD Voice/Advanced Calling in my Verizon account, waiting 10 minutes and then reenabling it (and waiting another few minutes).
Edit: and on the plus side, I realized the 6P and 5X while aren't official recognized by Verzion were much easier to add HD Calling to on my Verizon Business account. I didn't have to jump through the hoops of switching the sim card like I did on the N6.

I'm having the same issue on my phone after the update to 6.0.1. Will try Evan Van Van's advice of disabling and then reenabling
Thanks

Having the same problem with "Enhanced 4G LTE Mode" missing and removing and readding the feature didn't work... Anyone find another solution to get VoLTE working? My device seems to think its VoLTE provisioned because I have the option to turn it off in *#*#4636#*#*, but clicking the button there doesn't do anything...

This worked for me, thanks!

Does anyone know where VoLTE settings are stored on the /data partition? For laughs I tried a factory reset and it fixed the problem - the toggle showed up. But I'd like to avoid having to re-setup my entire phone just to get it working...

I'm having the same issue. Enhanced 4G LTE Mode is enabled on my phone. HD Voice is enabled on my Verizon account, but no simultaneous voice/data. Disabling and re-enabling the HD Voice feature on my account didn't work for me.
Not sure if this is relevant, but my account is a personal account and the SIM was brand new activated in the Verizon store (previous phone was a Note 4).

Did you ever get this sorted out? Seems like the march security update jacked my HD Calling up...I don't see the option to toggle it anymore

Does anyone know if the simultaneous voice and work everywhere or there are particular areas where the feature is available?

ATT EDGE and 3G connection question

I have a 8525 w/ the retail WM6 and i am not sure which radio version. (if someone tells me how to i will)
I live in Fresno,CA 93611 zip which according to ATTs site is 3G signal.
But i only get the E with the box around it.... i have never seen a G
I think this means i am connected to EDGE and not 3G.
Is there anyway to force 3G and not allow EDGE? 3G is mainly the reason i upgraded from my 8125.
When i use a speed tester I get 154kbs download and 85 upload which seems to be EDGE speeds.
if anyone has some advice please let me know.
thanks guys
You might have a old SIM card that does not have 3G compatability!
hmm okay, how would i be able to tell...
mine says 64K smartchip
X cingular then the IME number
would i need this card... cuz this is not the one i have

The speeds you indicated are definately Edge. 3G (HSDPA) will get you about 4x that speed. But forget about the SIM in this case. It's not the problem. Sounds like you have an "orange" SIM which will work just fine on a 3G network. All you'd need is a device that supports it (and the 8925 does), a data plan, and adequate signal strength. If the signal is weak you will drop down to Edge.
Are you on a custom ROM or a stock AT&T ROM? If custom most have an option in Comm Manager to enable / disable 3G. Some also have addon utilities to enable / disable it. I can say that Schap's 4.31 (and every one I've tried for the 8525) will support 3G.
okay i will try the new rom, i am on the stock....
PITA to reinstall all my programs and such but id rather do it now and have 3G to watch TV via ORB on
ill report back after i flash my rom.
thanks
Dude.
It is the SIM card. You need one that says 3G on it, they can be had at walmart even. But if all else fails ask ATT to send you one (they might even do it for free). ATT says that you need a 3G SIM to get 3G signal, all I know is I started getting 3G after I changed the SIM card and I was on the new WM6 ATT ROM.
Flashing your radio or your ROM will not fix this problem.
HSPDA enabling needs a 3G SIM to work.
That said, go ahead and flash Schaps 4.31 ROM... it is sweet and stable and has most everyting you need in it.
And please tell us if you got 3G with that old 64K SIM card.... that would be cool to know (although pretty surprising).
okay got it flashed buyt still only EDGE
i will be going down to my att shop tomorrow and trying to get them to upgrade my SIM
thanks guys

I'm on the same SIM as you described above. I've had this very SIM from long before I was on a 3G capable device, and before 3G was even available from Cingular / AT&T. Every time I've switched phones (never purchased through AT&T by the way) I just pop out the SIM and put it into the new device. Mine works just fine with 3G.
That's why I'm thinking it's not a SIM issue, but maybe an account related issue. The SIM does NOT store anything that enables or disables 3G. That happens on the network side. So I'd just call AT&T and ask them to enable 3G for your account. That should do the trick for you... I'll bet my SIM on it. And if they still want to send you a new SIM - well still no big deal.
I can tell you for 100% you must have a 3G sim card in order for you to be able to access UMTS. The sim will either say it on the front (for older cards) or on the back of the sim card (for the new att sim cards). Either way you must have 3G card. When you get the card and the sim number is updated in att system it will automaticlly activate the 3G code on your line. Thus enabling you to access UMTS.

Don't want to get into a pissing match over something this silly... but I can tell you for 100% that I don't have a 3G SIM card, and I do have 3G and HSDPA service. The SIM contains NO information that determines whether you do or do not have 3G capability. However I will concede that carriers may compel their subscribers to switch SIM's BEFORE they will enable 3G on an account. But the key is that 3G is enabled at the account level, not with a SIM. Again, I have a 3 year old SIM (from before 3G was offered)... I have 3G service.
If you research the SIM, here's what you'll find it contains. SIM cards store network specific information used to authenticate and identify subscribers on the Network, the most important of these are the ICCID, IMSI, Authentication Key (Ki), Local Area Identity (LAI) and Operator-Specific Emergency Number. The SIM also stores other carrier specific data such as the SMSC (Short Message Service Center) number, Service Provider Name (SPN), Service Dialing Numbers (SDN), Advice-Of-Charge parameters and Value Added Service (VAS) applications. None of this dictates whether or not you have 3G access, basically all it's doing is linking your device to an account so you can be billed.
not sure anout the sim yet..
i flash to new rom and still only edge...
I am going to L.A. tomorrow so we will see if it is an area thing... i will call ATT tomorrow and ask them to enable 3G on my account...
thanks guys
I know on my MDA in order for it to even show the E icon instead of the G I had to hack the registry. Surely you have 3G coverage in that area. Install the Schap's Advanced Config. app and turn it on through that.
okay i finally got it on the 3G and H service.... with download ay 458kbps watching live TV from my media server via orb w/o any distortion
thanks guys for the help.
i flashed to schaps wm6 updated my ROM and got a new ATT 3G sim and it works great... probably was a combo of things that were standning in my way...
thanks again
Well it seems as though it was probably the sim to me :0)
I have a 3G sim card if anyone wants it.
whats the difference between 3G and the H
it seems that when i am using the phone for voice it is on 3G
and when i am using data it is the H
actually you both are right, i worked for cingular/at&t the "3g" sim cards do contain information that allows you to access 3g networks the sim card is assigned a number if that number is a "3g" sim it automaticlly makes the nessicary changes to your account however if you can find someone in customer service who knows what they are doing they can change it manually most will not know what to do as the offical at&t procidure to fix that problem is "change sim card" besides just take a trip down to your local at&t store they will give you a new sim for free (a real store not an agent agents do charge for sim cards) oh yea and once you get the new sim enjoy the speed it makes all the trouble you have been through worth wile

[Q] How compatible is the Verizon Samsung S5 with AT&T / T-Mobile?

Anyone put in AT&T and T-Mobile SIM in Verizon Samsung S5?
Are you able to get data working? Which APN settings did you use? 3G, 4G, or LTE?
Would also be interested in this if anybody has an answer.
To make it more simple for anybody that may know what they're talking about, the following are screenshots of supported bands on both devices:

I see some compatible bands, but I'd like to be sure about the extent of compatibility with T-Mobile's 4G HSPA+ and LTE networks (fully compatible, partially, only 3G, etc). Thank you in advance for any responses.

I can confirm that the Galaxy S5 does support AT&T's HPSA+ network, but not their LTE network. However, at least in my area, they seemed to give pretty much the same speed; HPSA+ is quite capable.
That said, it was really just a test to see if the SIM card slot was unlocked since I will be traveling overseas in the near future, and would like the ability to pop in a SIM card from there and use my GS5. It does put a persistent notification up stating that I am not using a supported SIM card, but it doesn't actually prevent it. Note that once a 3rd party SIM card is put in, the APN configuration is unlocked and able to be used. You will need to enter the info manually since current Android versions block the ability of 3rd party programs to update APNs. Unless we happen to get root, then they can automatically update them...I hope we get root.
works on tmobile
I'm currently using tmobile sim in a verizon s5. Everything is working for me. I'm in a rear med 3g area so I get hspa+ speeds for 3g and lte also works. The only thing is that I have to switch network modes to get lte. When I switch I only have access to data until I switch back to 3g/UMTS .

For those of you who got this working, can you explain exactly what you did? The phone is not SIM locked, but it doesn't seem to roam to TMobile or ATT when one of their SIMs in inserted. An Australian SIM, which roams to TMobile when in a Nexus 5, yields the same behavior (no service) in the galaxy S5.
This behavior is in line with other VZW phones I've had -- they work internationally -- but will not roam off of VZW in the US. The phone reverts to "emergency calls only" when a non VZW SIM is used in the US.

On the Verzion s4, I was able to just put in my sim card and and change the mobile setting from cdma to global. To get 4G LTE on t-mobile, I would just add the t-mobile fast apn.
I'm sure this is the same case with the VZN S5

I didn't do anything special with my VZW Galaxy S5. I simply popped in an AT&T SIM, turned the phone back on, and I immediately had voice service. I had to add in the APN info to get data to work, but that's the only thing I had to do.
This is also the same experience I had with my VZW Galaxy S3 and an AT&T SIM.

I wonder if there is something unique about TMobile SIMs (and Foreign SIMs which rely on TMo in the US)? Several of my coworkers have Galaxy S IIIs and none of them can get TMobile (or foreign) SIMs to work.
Here's a screenshot with a TMobile SIM inserted. I went ahead and inputted the APN for TMobile LTE, no dice.
In case anyone is wondering, the phone works in Intl gsm networks, no SIM unlock required.

Does "Clean ESN" matter with newer phones

Due to recent financial issues I may have to let go of my verizon service due to the expenses and get on a family members plan with ATT. This will mean I have the S5 and no way to use it. If I was to sell it would someone be able to use it on verizon still? I know in the past your phone would be flagged and it would no longer be allowed. I wasnt sure if that was still the case with verizons move to SIM cards.
Thanks.
One more question, which prepaid services would work? Any with LTE?

Believe there to be a security feature active that you would have to look into before sale to make sure the new owner could use it....
Give this a read HERE.
or cancel your account then it will show as not being an active device.. of course if you have a contract you will have an etf to pay as with most carriers...

Incorrect. The Verizon S5 accepts AT&T and T-Mobile SIMS just fine.
Back in the pre-LTE days, Verizon devices that had GSM capabilities were generally only usable on foreign GSM networks (AT&T and T-Mobile were locked out). That's no longer the case and hasn't been for a while now.

OK - well - maybe my VZW S5 is broken in some way, but it won't pick up any signal when I put an active TMobile 4G-LTE SIM in it. It did work fine outside of the US in Australia. I posted a picture of what happens with the TMobile SIM in some other thread. No amount of playing with the APNs / network order / etc. made the TMo SIM work.
EDIT: Here's the pic with a TMobile SIM inserted:

OK - well - maybe my VZW S5 is broken in some way, but it won't pick up any signal when I put an active TMobile 4G-LTE SIM in it. It did work fine outside of the US in Australia. I posted a picture of what happens with the TMobile SIM in some other thread. No amount of playing with the APNs / network order / etc. made the TMo SIM work.
EDIT: Here's the pic with a TMobile SIM inserted:
Even with no APNs you should be able to get signal...

Here's my Verizon S5 on Verizon (for comparison's sake so you can see it is the same device):
And here's my Verizon S5 with an active T-Mobile SIM card inserted. It's picking up signal no problem, and that's without editing anything besides switching the phone to GSM/UMTS mode.
The Verizon S5 is unlocked and will work on AT&T and T-Mobile, just like essentially every other Verizon LTE device that has the appropriate GSM bands.

How strange, how'd you get rid of the "This SIM is from an unknown source" notification?

Long press on the notification -> App Info -> Force stop. It has to be done every time the phone is restarted. I switch SIMs so often that I do it without thinking now as soon as the phone starts up. I can take another screenshot with the notification on the screen if needed.
I have to switch back and forth between Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T SIMs for work. I've done so for a couple years now, so it's something I have a lot of experience with regarding Verizon devices.

Yeah, I knew you could do the long press thing on each reboot. Wonder why mine won't hop onto TMo. By any chance did you put your TMo/ATT sim in *before* you ever put in a VZW SIM? My phone came with the VZW SIM in it and pre-activated to my account, maybe it is locked somehow?
As for the original question in this thread - yes, "clean ESN" definitely still matters (although it's technically now the IMEI rather than an ESN).
In fact, it matters even more now than it used to. Previously, if you were talking about a Verizon phone, it only mattered for people wanting to use the phone on Verizon. But now there is a shared IMEI blacklist that Verizon is a part of, so a phone with a blacklisted IMEI on Verizon may not work on any major U.S. carrier.

Nope. Activated it on Verizon first when it was brand new.
After starting the phone with the T-Mobile SIM inserted, did you make sure the phone was in Global or GSM/UMTS mode and then select T-Mobile under Settings -> More Networks -> Mobile Networks -> Network operators?

I dont recall it ever finding TMobile in the network operator list. I did change it to GSM. I'll have to try it again.

If the SIM is active, T-Mobile should show up there. It can take a few minutes to show up sometimes, but it should show up eventually. If it's not showing up, there's a problem with the SIM or with the phone. Since you said the phone worked fine in Australia with a foreign SIM, I'd be inclined to think the problem would probably be with the T-Mobile SIM.

I have the same problem, Verizon S5 with bad esn I brought of Craigslist very cheap to use with Tmobile, but mines has a circle in the task bar. I think the imei is blocked because I can take the sim out and pop it into my tmobile note 2 and everything is fine.
hey guys i got that exactly problem on my s5 verizon and i put a gsm of another carrier (viva) and show up that notification... for that signal work it (mobile data) with your SIM CARD you have to add your carrier APN in the settings>more networks>mobile network>access point names> and touch + and there will add your APN configuration and save it and done be sure you have your WI-FI OFF for show your 4G or H+ or Edge be in white color and enjoy it
the only issues i don't know how to remove the notification permanently

Pixel 2 XL setup for dual carriers using fi on eSIM

One of my favorite of the many cool features in Pixel 2's is the addition of an eSIM. 100% love everything about this device: Pixel 2 XL Running beta 8.1, rooted, and dual SIM's!
Anyone else rocking dual SIM's? or using FiSwitch, or other apps to switch between SIM's?
I'm running a Verizon physical SIM (Work's unlimited plan) and joined my family's fi account using the Pixel 2 XL's eSIM for a whopping $25.
fi was easy to setup on their web site. The Wife and Kid were already sharing 2 gigs data. They occasionally would go over 2 gigs, fi automatically adds data @ $10 per gig, and credits back unused leftovers above base.
The base Plan is $30, add additional members @ $25 each. My plan for three devices is $80 total, with 3Gigs of data to share. We are all on WiFi most of the time. When we travel together, I usually turn on Verizon hotspot to save on fi data.
At work I roam around into some iffy network locations, some almost daily, where I lose Verizon service. I stay on Verizon until I go into one of the Verizon dead spots. Then I can switch to the fi eSIM, which usually finds service between one of the three fi carriers in my area. If I travel abroad I'm all set, just tap the screen a few times and jump onto the fi eSIM. It only takes about 20 seconds for the network to switch between the SIM's.
I use Signal messaging, so all of text messages come through on either SIM.
I use a very cool app FiSwitch by XDA forum member @dwitherell to change carriers within the Fi network, and soon it will have a shortcut to switch SIM's.
The persistent notification tile can show lots of nerdy network info. FiSwitch creator @dwitherell is rocking a Pixel 2 XP too. He is planning to add a shortcut to the carrier SIM switch on the next update to FiSwitch. This will make it very easy to switch from SIM to eSIM within his App
Attached are some thumbnails of Pixel2's Dual SIM screens and fiSwitch in action.

I hope other will post there setups, and if they use FiSwitch or one of the the other switching apps.
If you know someone that's already on Fi, you might consider asking them for a referral. Then you and your friend can each get a $20 credit after the first month. That's better than a poke in the eye
Wow, so I didn't even think that the e-sim in this phone would act as a dual SIM set up. That's awesome.

This is awesome! Kudos
I just activated my FI number from my 6p onto my 2XL as discussed above and all is good to go as second carrier. Great idea. Also, switching back to the other phone is just as painless. Nice to have options!
I have a nexus 6p running project fi,
Now since I bought the Pixel XL 2 off Google store.
Can I activate dual carriers like OP, but also get calls on my Nexus 6P?
Right now I use Verizon on the 2XL and Fi with Call forwarding so both phones ring at the same time.
I also use the Nexus for International calls. I think I would have to activate another number to keep my 6P running Fi. Then have dual SIM on the 2XL and turn off call forwarding.
Understand my Concern??

You would need a data only sim for the N6p. This can be ordered for free through the Project Fi app on your phone, under 'Manage Plan'. It shares the data plan with you main device (Pixel 2 XL) so no complicated bill. On your Pixel 2 XL, open the Google Hangouts app settings. Under 'Account' select the account associated with you Project Fi account. Look for 'Messages' under 'Project Fi calls and SMS', and toggle that On. This will let you send and receive SMS/MMS from any device that is logged into Hangouts with your account, even your PC, and you main device can be turned off.
When the data-only sim arrives, activate it and put it in your N6p. Install the Google Hangouts and Google Hangouts Dialer apps. Now you can send and receive SMS/MMS through Hangouts. To receive calls go to Hangouts settings, under 'Account' select the account associated with you Project Fi account. Look for "Incoming phone calls" and toggle that to on. If this is missing just back out of the Hangouts app, then open back to the same settings screen, it should be there now. Now you can receive calls on you N6p. To place calls, open the Hangouts Dialer. Now you can send/receive calls/SMS/MMS on you N6p while your Pixel 2 XL functions like normal. Now both phones will ring and notify when you get a call or text message.
I am currently running this setup on my N6p with 8.1 Develop Preview 1 and Pixel 2 XL 8.0 Nov update.
EDIT: I just pulled the data only sim card out of my N6p and this worked over wifi. I assume this would work for any available data connection, but I've only been able to test with a Projec Fi data only sim, and wifi.
This is great. I have a question. I have my work number as a project fi (Currently using on a different phone). Can I activate it with my pixel 2 xl along side t-mobile, and receive calls from both without having to activate and de-activate?
@radionerd thanks for the shout out
While this is fringe on-topic at best, for any that use my little tinkering project (FiSwitch) feel free to hit me up with suggestions/issues/etc. - there are limited feedback channels for this so I'm always happy to see a new one spring up!
Also - a big thanks to @radionerd for suggesting the creation of those mobile network settings and esim manager shortcuts!

I cant confirm this, because I dont have a sim card from a different carrier to test, but if you activate Project Fi on your Pixel 2 with eSIM, configure project fi to share your messages and calls with hangouts (see a couple posts up), then you should be able to switch back to Tmobile as you primary sim card.
This SHOULD allow you to send/receive Project Fi calls/text through Google Hangouts/Hangouts Dialer over Tmobile data connection, and send/receive, Tmobile calls/texts through standard messaging app and dialer app.
If you're willing, please give this a try and report back. I'd like to know if this works (the way i think it should) before signing up for another data plan.

You know, this is a little off subject. But you could use Google voice for your work number and it's free. Currently I use Google voice for work and then my carrier number is my personal number.
I use an app called voice choice 2.0 that give me the option to choose which number to dial with. I can set up area codes, specific contacts, or a group to dial with each number. Works great.
I'm just looking at this app and project fi for coverage where TMobile doesn't roam on Sprint.

Actually this is what I am doing right at the moment. I can do calls and texts over the "hangouts" app without using the hangouts dialer "unlike using the google voice". The only thing about it is, it is not as reliable when someone calls in because sometimes the app goes to sleep etc. I'll probably play with it and see.
Just wished I could take advantage of this, but I'm in the UK ;(
@matteosaeed My setup is I have Fi esim then a T Moblile sim. I have Fi calls and texts forwarded to the T Mobile number. The only time there is kinda an issue is with MMS I have to switch back to the esim for the message / attachment to download correctly. Other than that I just stay on the physical T Mobile sim and all calls and texts arrive like normal for both numbers. Switching between the sim and esim takes like 10 seconds, so the MMS thing is hardly an issue. Super convenient.
Edit: Also just as an FYI I've noticed if someone texts your Fi number while you're on the T Mobile sim and you respond to that forwarded message it'll show that you're texting from the Fi number. If you're on the T Mobile sim and send a new message then it'll show as sent from the T Mobile number.

You could try enabling unrestricted background data and disable battery optimization for Hangouts. This might use a little more battery but should keep the app awake in the background.
I'm the one with the Pixel 2XL and Nexus 6p, I have a Pixel XL but I gave that to my wife and I like the 2 front speakers.
When I disabled Project Fi on my New 2XL I went and got myself a Verizon Nano Sim Chip. Which means I can still use Hangouts on my phone send SMS and when I get calls in I have Call forwarding it works great. I really don't worry about incoming calls.
I like having Unlimited Data, and when I travel I like to have the best Data connection as possible.
So as of now how do I install Fi Switch App?
Do I Enable and reinstall/update Project Fi and then activate my ESIM Fi account.
install Fi Switch to go by about testing which is the Fastest Data Network Speeds play around with that option or do I order a data nano SIM like OP stated?
Would I be able to use for esim for talk and text and Verizon soon love nano SIM for data?

No, the SIMs cannot be active at the same time, its one or the other.
Unless of course, you want to manually switch them

If you are getting a Verizon data SIM, I recommend the Verizon MiFi 7730L Jetpack. You could run it standalone as a hotspot. I run a MiFi 7730L 24/7 hooked via USB to a cheap Mikrotik router, use the routers Ethernet ports for wired devices and high power hotspot.
On my dual SIM setup I forward the fi number to Verizon, since Verizon is my primary service. I only switch off of Verizon when out of range, or sucky data.
I use Signal Messaging app for all text messaging, it doesn't care what phone number, or service is active it will receive and forward all SMS messages through any carrier, WiFi even with no SIM at all.
To switch SIM's you just go into the network Carrier settings and select which SIM you want to use, one at a time.
FiSwitch app soon will be adding a shortcut to the eSIM Manager, one click to change between SIM's.

Yes,
You can activate your eSIM from the fi Project App, or fi web interface. It's real easy, just click though... select the Pixel 2 or 2XL and it will prompt for eSIM or physical SIM. I ported my free google voice number to fi in about 30 seconds.
I recommend the FiSwitch app, but it's not required. You can change Sim's from the Network Carrier settings screen. FiSwitch will soon have a shortcut to the eSIM Manager, then it will only be two touches of the screen to switch SIM's. :good:

Also I don't see where to order a Data Only SIM, in my PFi app, it says ( add person )15$ and invite them to your plan 10/GB share data.... Is that what you're talking about?

VoLTE disabled on newer devices?

Hi,
I bought my MiA1 back in January and enjoy the VoLTE option availble on my device with HD calls. Now my girlfriend bought exactly the same device (Global Version) but no VoLTE even after switching SIM cards. No Enhanced LTE mode availble in preferences as well. I've tried latest StockROM and also latest Lineage OS. With Lineage the Enhanced LTE Mode is availble but the phone drops back to 3g everytime I make a call. Why should this be? Any ideas?

Already tried that. Also switching APNs. One interesting thing I forgot to mention. After dialing *#*#4636#*#* the IMS Service Status shows IMS Registration: Registered on my device and Not Registered on my girlfriends device. Both have good LTE reception
For me I've activated voLTE with *#*#86583#*#* (stock ROM).
The only drawback is that I cannot send SMS with voLTE but it's not a big deal.

Ok the code activated a volte carrier check according to the message. And I could select an APN (o2 IMS) however IMS Status is still not registered and I cannot enable VoLTE provisioning (it's greyed out). I'm positive that the SIM is VoLTE enabled since I can use it to make VoLTE calls in my other phone. Also Restarted the phone two times no change.
What is missing?

Installed latest lineageos on both devices. The device that did VoLTE with stock before does it with lineageos too. The other one does not . Playing around with APN setting does nothing! Can it be that some devices have some kind of hardware lock to disable VoLTE?
I'm puzzled and clueless and could really use some more help.... :crying:

I'm sure it have something to do with ims. Your Carrier have properly register your phone imei
Your girlfriend phone carrier not. Even if it is the same carrier.
I suggest you to contact directly your carrier to see if they don't have messed up somewhere
And also maybe a new sim card.
I don't have volte too my simcard doesn't have the phone number registered inside it, ims is unregistered etc...
Maybe it's because i just changed carrier and wanted to keep the same number
So i got a temporary number and the carrier change the number to the right one at a defined period on server side
Maybe a new sim card with the number registered and ask for phone imei at activation will do the trick?

Interesting thing I had no clue that the carrier will store imei information for a specific SIM card. Anyway I have 2 SIMS one from Telekom.de and the other from o2 Germany. Telekom I already contacted they said that if the device is not officially supported then there is no support for VoLTE . Anyway I ordered a new SIM card. The o2 hotline is not reachable as always.

Same here with Orange.
They told me that my device is not on their support list but after I disabled carrier check I have voLTE.

It's strange in your case. If both SIM's are Telekom I don't understand why one is working and other not.

Yes and no. The device didn't allow VoLTE no matter what I tried. Since it was still under warranty I asked my dealer to exchange it and he did. Got another MiA1 global produced in May 2018 accodring to the label on the case. After updating to latest stock and disbling VoLTE checking I finally got an HD symbol. Custom ROM also does VoLTE very well. I'm convinced that either certain IMEIs are being blocked by german carriers to disable VoLTE or the devices themselfs are crippled - I'm afraid the latter.

Great, many thanks, at last I've reenabled the VoLTE on my MI A1, it was lost with the upgrade from Nougat to Oreo!
Do you have a list of all this GSM codes for MI A1? I've only found some codes here and there but yours is new to me.
P.S. FYI, I'm from Italy, my provider is TIM (To enable VoLTE you have to ask the provider first, I think it's locked to the IMEI, so changing SIM slot needs another phone call to provider)
