Updates after rooting? - Galaxy S6 Edge+ Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I checked that once I am rooted, I will no longer get any official updates. Is that true? Any workarounds for that?
If I am on stock rooted rom, then how will I receive updates?

Anyone?

You won't. ..that's the point of rooting...an update is likely to break the root

Do we need to freeze anything to avoid an ota before we know it's safe?
Sent from my SM-G928C

So what's the option to update after rooting? What does the general majority do?

You wait for a dev to take whatever update was released to dissect and tweak and wait for their release.

Hello. As I know you wont get OTA update, you can flash original updated firmwares via odin(downloaded from sammobile.com). At the other hand you can flash custom roms which based new firmware, your choice. Thank you.

Ok so effectively, its better to put custom Rom as they will provide updates regularly.. If I install official firmware everyone a new update comes, then again I'll have to root it separately.. That is just irritating.. So better to go to custom Rom then! Thanks!

official update after root - possible?

hi all. Maybe is a stupid questions but I want to know if I root my phone do I will get any official update? (see attachment)
No, you wont be able to get the over-the-air updates anymore if you root.
However, if you flash a custom rom like cyanogenmod the devs usualy incorporate the ota update into their roms. So either way you'd still get the patches
so that mean in order to get the updates over-the-air, i have to role back to unroot nandroid backup, do the updates, than root again.. is that correct?
I thought I read in a recent thread that if you rooted, but kept the stock Tom
You would still get OTA update. Can anyone clarify?
if you have stock bootloader and stock rom but are rooted you will still receive OTA updates, if you flash amons boodloader, and custom roms you will not receive updates.
just remeber that once you update you will lose root and will have to re-apply the root, when it has been released. for that update!
No i mean flash a custom rom (like cyanogenmod) and each time there is an OTA update cyanogen will patch it to his rom. So pretty much flash a custom rom and keep it updated because they will include any OTA updates that are out already

ok, so, can you give me one root information, in order to keep my updates over the air, please?
what do you mean give you one root information, if u unlock bootloader, via fastboot, then use pauls root over at modaco, u will still have stock boot loader and custom rom, all root does is give u superuser, as long as you do not flash a custom recovery or custom rom you will be fine.

take a look at my fist post: I unlock bootloader via fastboot, I applied root but I did not used Paul root, and also I don't have a custom rom. I have the attachment on top of the page..... everybody get me confused.... can somebody clarified me?
all you show in top post is a pic of the update 1, ERE 27 which to date is the newest one google has released,
right, u got stock bootloader and stock rom, but u r rooted u will still get OTA updates as only custom roms block OTA updates!.

which means 'm still able to get OTA updates, correct?
This conversation was very frustrating to read.
Yes you will get OTA updates, but you will get the same updates much sooner by using Cyanogen's ROM.
I have no idea what motivation you would have to root your N1 and void the warranty if you are just going to get OTA updates and not take advantage of any of the benefits that root enables... (The most desirable of which is a custom recovery allowing the application of a custom ROM)

I feel sorry if these conversation it becomes frustrating, but look my reason:
1. no warranty, in my country is not available yet, it sales on black market
2. before to root, I did not made a nandroid backup, I done after root
3. I'm running Alpha 10 Desire Rom for N1, and I want to make sure if I'm going to roll back to my nandroid backup, I will be able to get OTA updates
one more time I do apologize.

Update using ota or keep root (noob)

Greetings! Im new to the rooting scene and i have a rooted note 3 on 4.3. I would like to know if it is better to install the ota update then root again or just flash a new rom that is kitkat already.
Thanks in advance.

You cannot OTA update since you have rooted. You can only download stock firmware and flash via Odin. And yes, you have to root again, also via Odin.
A new (custom) rom is another option, I have no idea with it.
For the time being, I would browse the Note 3 Android Development forum and see if a custom ROM is what you want. If it is, then by all means go ahead and flash one. If not, then upgrading to 4.4.2 and rooting is the best bet. Personally, I was on stock 4.4.2 rooted, and it didn't take long for me to flash a custom ROM. I'm on my third custom ROM in a month, so it can definitely get addicting.
You can update via OTA.
Thereafter, flash the old kernel xxund3.
root via towel root, and reflash the Kernel that came with the OTA update.
All via Odin. I don't think there's any way to do it, yet, and at the same time keeping knox 0x0.

[Q] 5.0 and custom ROMs

I'm currently rooted and running Slimkat. I just got the notification that the 5.0 OTA is available for download. A few questions:
If I want to stay on Slimkat for now, is there a way to turn off the OTA notification?
If I want to try out 5.0, do I have to go back to stock or can I just take the OTA?
If I do take the OTA and lose root, will I have any problem going back to Slimkat if I want to?
Thanks!
5.0 ota notification on a custom rom???
Ota works only with stock

1. not sure (sorry)
2. i'm not sure what'll happen if you try to accept it running a custom rom....worst case scenario, it fails and you need to flash stock img to the n10, best case, you have stock 5.0....backup what you need to before deciding either way and put it on a pc
3. it shouldn't be any different than when you rooted it the first time
that being said, i'm currently using lollipopalooza and as a die hard slim user, am quite happy with it. it lacks the depth of slim but has a few extra options over stock. and running L gives this device much needed life again. i suggest giving it a try if you have the time to play around with it all

there's been reports from other slim users from what i've seen in the n5 forums too....there shouldn't be, i know, but he's not the only one
The ota won't work because you don't have the stock recovery installed. I wouldn't accept an official stock ota on a custom rom. The notification is a bug, it shouldn't appear.

Good to know I shouldn't bother with the OTA.
As for the notifications, I'm seeing things about editing the build.prop to trick Google into thinking I'm current. Can anybody provide the proper edits for the N10/5.0?

S5 root with marshmallow

What's going to happen to my SM-G900I thats got root (running stock) when it receives the marshmallow update. Sorry for the simple question. Thanks
marshmallow update
Hey there! your root will probably be lost if you accept the OTA (over the air) marshmallow. My best advice to you is this:
1. DON'T accept the update. (caps lock for emphasis only). You, as the subscriber, can only accept the update. The carrier can't "force update' your phone without your permission.
2. wait until a dev "captures" the update and "injects" the root (if available) in the marshmallow stock rom.
3. as a rooted user myself, exercise your due patience and wait it out. don't *ask* for ETA from a dev -- it's mean. =)
I hope this helps. =)
You won't get OTA updates if you're rooted, you'll have to update manually then root again

So I will have to do a full unroot to get the update normally, and would manually updating just be flashing the stock mm rom?

Full unroot doesn't seem to revert the device "Custom" status, which is what stops the OTA, to "Official" which is the status needed for OTA
The only way to return the device to Official is to flash a stock ROM with ODIN, that will unroot you and return the device to Official and OTA will work
And yes, Flashing manually is flashing a stock ROM with ODIN

You only lose anything custom, like root or recovery, all your apps and files etc are safe

You will need to flash your stock firmware again first. Then flash twrp and root after. You will not receive OTA updates so when update arrives you just flash manually.

Yes that's what I've gathered now. I'm actually on stock Oreo CRAP but not had update yet probably because I'm rooted.
Where can I get latest update & will I loose root if I update?

Yeah that's true, you won't receive ota while rooted.
https://updato.com/firmware-archive-select-model
You can find latest stick firmware here. Latest oreo is CRC7.
If you update you will lose twrp/root. You will be fully stock.
Alternatively you can try a custom ROM
Yes looks that way but with custom Rom im just tired with full wipe when new releases are out..I guess I can't have everything
Thanks

You don't always need full wipe. You can dirty flash most updates.
Only need to wipe if it's a new base.
I rarely clean flash
