I'm on 318 and it seems the camera takes a while to focus, and it gives a little beep. Does that mean I shouldn't capture until it beeps? I've noticed the picture quality stinks, and there are threads about that, so I guess its what I have to live with until smart peps figure out how to make it better. But, in the mean time, what's the best way to get decent pics from this thing. Wait for the focus, or should I be seeing the Sam quality without waiting for the focus beep? I swear, it seems to me that if I don't wait for the beep, the pictures look even worse than if I had waited for the beep.

To get the Bleep are you keeping your finger on the shutter
The way i do it is just a quick press it focuses in a sec and takes a good pic
Thing to remember its a phone not a camera it may be a 5mp camera but it has not got all the software a 5mp camera has.

Turn on the camera and just hold it in one place. It will focus and beep and the 4 corner things will turn green.
It should take better pics than it does. My hd2 running windows or android shoots this streaks camera to shame.
The streak does take and reply nice video though.

I don't hold the button at all. I just open the camera and tap the shutter to take a pic. I've never tried holding the button at all. I just noticed the camera focuses and makes a sound if you don't take a pic and just hold the phone still. And weather I just take a pic or wait for it to focus and beep and the corners change to green, it really doesn't matter because the pictures still aren't up to par with the hd2 pictures. Sometimes I also noticed the setting changes from 5mp to VGA on its own.

I'm using 318 and I haven't had much luck with it autofocusing correctly. I tried to take a pic of my christmas tree with the Streak and it missed on the focus every time. I tried pointing it at different parts of the tree but it missed every time. Not sure if it was the lights or the lack of solidness (is there a word for that?) that threw it off.
You might want to try taking pictures of different things first. The camera isn't the best but it does the job. Its probably the only thing I miss from my iPhone. LOL.

You can hold the on-screen shutter button and then when you release it takes the picture.
I find that this works better to keep hand-shake out of the image. You just keep your finger on the on-screen button and it will focus, then when you release, it snaps the pic.

What are the best settings for the camera to take optimum pictures?
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
Low photo resolution even if 5MP is chosen
Upgrade to 2.2 build 12821 recently, took a number of photos, but only realize today that the file size (resolution?) of those photos are really small i.e. around 500kb.
I have always set it as 5 MB. It was never an issue until I upgraded...
Sigh... previously I had the orientation problem, and now the resolution problem. Dissapointed with Dell software.
Look for an option for "reset to default"on camera settings. Mine also switched to low resolution after the upgrade. But it is back now.
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
The top button on screen is the camera settings. It is scrollable. At the bottom is "reset to default". Should do the trick
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
Mine kept resetting to VGA too. I think its sticking on 5mp now though

Have you tried various camera apps such as Camera360? Those seem to work pretty well also, plus they have a ton of options.
I love everything about the Nexus 4 except the camera. The autofocus is having serious trouble unless you have a LOT of light. Compared to other smartphones, it seems to be broken. Does anyone else have this problem? Also, I've used 2 Nexus 4's, so I'm sure this is a software issue. Have any past Nexus devices had similar issues and been fixed?
Thanks!
I don't have that problem. Both with normal and HDR mode. In HDR mode it can be blurry, but not because out-of-focus but rather because my hands move while the phone still taking the picture (it takes more than one picture to create a HDR picture)
Also, I do notice that even in normal mode the camera actually takes longer to take the picture than one would expect, so usually holds your hand steady for a few extra seconds do the trick.
I hope that helps.

+1. My N4 16GB refuses to take any macro shots. The auto focus keeps engaging and is extremely annoying. The video recording seems ok, but the picture taking is atrocious.
I think I'm getting the same thing... but then, I started to think maybe it was psychological. You know, the circle showing you constant auto focusing? It moves so much, it makes you feel the "focus bouncing" much more than it would do if all you saw was the picture being focused only.
Well, that's my theory, anyways.
Any 'fix' for this?

I was trying to take a picture of my old Sensation XE to put on ebay but the N4 just wont focus well enough, it constantly focuses and refocuses. Its hugely frustrating and disappointing for a phone this powerful. Has anybody had any success perhaps with different software? There doesnt seem to be any kind of 'macro mode' built into the JB app?
Yes, I find the camera to be bad too, especially the autofocus that fails to focus on objects that are further away.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
Unless you are using tap to focus... if the camera is refocusing it is because your hands are not steady, which most likely is also the reason your shots are blurry.
I have noticed that the default program tends to set shutter speeds low to get the ISO down, but anything under 1/60th is going to take steady hands or a tripod. Consider using action mode to tell the camera you want it to use higher shutter speeds (but be aware this will cause more noise in low light due to higher ISO settings).
I've noticed this alot, when I try and take a close up photo, say of a phone, with the flash on, I use touch to focus and the flash turns on for a split second, and the green circle comes up saying it's focused, when it's badly out of focus, it seems to be a bit better with the flash off, but I've noticed the best improvement, whilst still not great, is pressing the shutter button before it focuses, so no ring on the screen, then it seems to have more luck focusing.
I honestly haven't had any problem with this. I have noticed the flash turning on briefly when focusing in low-light conditions, but the resulting pictures turn out fine.
Dunno if this will help, but someone on another thread suggested holding down (basically long-pressing) the capture button, waiting for the camera to focus, then releasing when you actually want to take the picture.
I don't have this issue either. Sorry to go a little off-topic but what is 'HDR'?

High dynamic range. The camera uses multiple exposures of the same image to generate more levels from shadows to hilights.
I think the problem lies in the new Camera app in 4.2. I had this same problem with my Galaxy Nexus when I updated to 4.2 so I reverted back to 4.1.
Now with Nexus 4 the problem seems to presist, but only when trying to focus very close.
the issue I have is with PA (so maybe not hardware related), but videos don't focus, only the camera function (unless I've not worked out how).

Very helpful, was having same issue (no autofocus) with the wonderful PA ROM on the (so far) fun Nexus 4.
Only real issue I've had with it so far, good to be past it (hard to know where to look).
Clearly I have no idea what radio even means, time to read.
Same problem here

Hi folks,
Just bought my new Black Galaxy S4 (I9505) yesterday and enjoying every bit of it, but camera has been a great disappointment. I'm not sure why but the camera has some really bad lag. So much so, I have started thinking that S4 has some sort of issue with camera. I tried searching on the interent, and could not find any other complaints on S4's camera shutter.
Is there anyone else having the same issue? Let me explain the issue; when I take a picture on Auto mode (or any other mode), there is a lag between pressing the camera button and when the actual picture is taken. That is probably understandable due to auto focus (?), but most of the pictures come out blurry. Also, the frame I see in the view finder is not the same as the actual picture. I mean, the subject in the frame at the time of when I see the picture has been taken, does not come out the same when I look at the picture itself. I'm no camera expert so trying my best to explain it well. I have disabled every sort of fancy features in my camera, as well as the whole phone (air gesture, smart screen, etc) (although I'm sure that has nothing to do with the camera performance) but still the issue is still there.
Any suggestions on how to make it better. I take quite a lot of pictures and have been doing it on my S3 without any major complaints. In fact, I love SGS3 camera, and upgraded to S4 thinking it'll have a better camera, but that's not my experience till now.
Thanks!

Thanks for the reply! I did upgrade the software as soon as I connected my phone to wifi. I think that was the only update ever since S4 launched. Any other suggestions? I do believe that this is not a common issue, I read some camera reviews and everyone seems to be praising the shutter speed, so they must be talking about a different camera than what I have
i have the same issue, i have newest software, just updated by ota. when i press sutter button i have to wait one second for picture is actually taken... so big lag, with s3 it was instant - zero shutter lag.

That's it! That is what I am experiencing. Not sure how to fix it. If you find anything, do let me know. I'm also looking around and trying different settings. My S3 had a super camera with no lags and pictures come out crisp, that's not what I'm getting with S4.

Is the delay there when you use the voice command?
At least I am not alone. Thanks to everyone who replied. Can someone disable "auto night detection" in camera settings and see if it makes any difference? I tried changing this setting and do feel some difference but cannot tell for sure. I have seen that when you take a picture in dark and when auto night detection is enabled, shutter speed is a lot faster than usual.
I am hoping we'll find some answer within the existing phone/camera settings and dont have to hack the camera, or in worst case, change the phone.
Thanks!

When focusing instead of letting the phone do it tap screen let it lock on then take the picture, I've had no problems using the camera on my phone pics have come out sharp.
But i do agree the camera software itself still needs abit of work doing yet, this will more likely get sorted out in future updates.

Complaining here won't help - you all have to spam Samsung with lots of emails.
This is not something that is going to get fixed with a software update, maybe improved but not fixed. Having a 13 MP camera using tiny lens and sensor will inherently cause a situation where it takes longer to gather a sufficient amount of light, hence longer exposure times and slower shutter speeds. This is the price to pay for being able to capture lots of detail out of a tiny camera. The S4's camera should not be used to capture moving targets.
I got the phone on launch day at Verizon and really like it. The speed, screen and still camera have all really impressed me. However there are 3 issues that have me considering exchanging it.
1) Screeching during phone calls. I don't use my phone for voice calls that much, but when I do, it's extremely distracting with the digital screeching that happens every few seconds. It does it worse sometimes but I rarely complete a call screech free. Is everyone on Verizon experiencing the same thing? Should I exchange mine for another? Can/Will a software fix this?
2) Touchscreen issues. Often when I double click to zoom in on a webpage, the phone starts registering phantom touches and is basically impossible to use until it's rebooted.
3) Autofocus issue on video recording. This absolutely ruins videos for me. I can't believe they'd ship a phone with this bad of an issue and I can't believe the reviews didn't make a bigger deal out of it. Is there anyway a custom video recording app could fix it? Even if LG is working on a fix, Verizon wouldn't roll it out for months I'm sure.
Any help on any of these issues would be greatly appreciated.
1 - I'm not experiencing any screeching on Verizon calls. An update with newer radio firmware might fix this sort of thing, but that might be a ways away and I haven't seen any other reports of this.
2 - Sounds like a pretty serious problem, show a vzw rep and you should be able to swap it out after they try soft resets and whatever other troubleshooting they wanna do.
3 - I'm experiencing this as well, not often, but it made for a crappy 5 second span in a video of my cat rolling around in the laundry
1. Are you OTA either VZN or flashed in a custom rom?
2. I stopped doing it this way because of knock on. I just use pinch zoom now.
3. I haven't had the issue as long add I didn't try to take videos like I was filming Blair witch. Aka stand still. And if you video tape things getting closer and farther away it's going to refocus. I did start using manual focus on pictures though....1000x better. Many more keepers.

No screeching here either, but I havent made many calls, and none of them have been that long (this phone can really make calls too? I figured it was just a gaming and texting machine )
I find my touchscreen is very sensitive in the fact that I dont even have to TOUCH it to press a button, sometimes. Just hovering my finger close enough to the screen causes a touch.....this may not be unique to this phone, Ive just never noticed it on others. Doesnt worry me too much. There is a place to calibrate it in the settings, have you tried running that procedure?
The video thing is apparently common for LG phones. I believe a previous Optimus phone had the same problem and it was fixed via an update. I would expect the same to happen for the G2, eventually (or a third party dev fixes it for them )

havent had the first 2 problems but the third i have every time i record with my camera. for a phone that has optical image stabilization, you shouldnt have to be perfectly still to get the camera to focus. the OIS on this camera is not very good if it cant have alot of light coming in. so recording this like inside of a building where the lighting is not as bright as outside will result in a blurred video if you move. this is a big downside to the camera to me. it would have been alot better if they would have atleast made the video camera tap to focus. but there is not 1 focus settings when in video mode. you dont always get to be still especially when videoing things like your kids. it gets annoying real fast and i end up having to redo the video.

in 30 fps mode it has a tap to focus after you start recording, but in 60 fps it does not. this is what i also said in my original post. i was talking about 60 fps mode. why would you not have tap to focus in the best mode for the camera? they allow me to control other aspects in 60 fps mode but not focusing? that's something i dont understand. 60 fps mode is much smoother than 30 fps mode yet the camera doesnt have something as easy as any kind of focusing in 60 fps mode.

Do I have a setting wrong or something?
Has anyone had a long camera lag only some of the time? I haven't pin pointed it down but most of the time it takes the pic instantly but others it shows a message to hold camera still till it shoots the pic. Obviously I prefer it taking it instantly so what's the deal? Is it low light situations?

Yes. The S5 has a combined Image Stabilization/Night mode. When it gives you that message, you'll notice a small icon in the corner with a moon, a star, and a hand, indicating that it has gone into stabilization/night mode due to lack of ambient light. You can force instant shutter by disabling image stabilization.
Perfect answer thank you

When it gives you that message, you'll notice a small icon in the corner with a moon, a star, and a hand, indicating that it has gone into stabilization/night mode due to lack of ambient light. You can force instant shutter by disabling image stabilization.
