Hi folks,
Just bought my new Black Galaxy S4 (I9505) yesterday and enjoying every bit of it, but camera has been a great disappointment. I'm not sure why but the camera has some really bad lag. So much so, I have started thinking that S4 has some sort of issue with camera. I tried searching on the interent, and could not find any other complaints on S4's camera shutter.
Is there anyone else having the same issue? Let me explain the issue; when I take a picture on Auto mode (or any other mode), there is a lag between pressing the camera button and when the actual picture is taken. That is probably understandable due to auto focus (?), but most of the pictures come out blurry. Also, the frame I see in the view finder is not the same as the actual picture. I mean, the subject in the frame at the time of when I see the picture has been taken, does not come out the same when I look at the picture itself. I'm no camera expert so trying my best to explain it well. I have disabled every sort of fancy features in my camera, as well as the whole phone (air gesture, smart screen, etc) (although I'm sure that has nothing to do with the camera performance) but still the issue is still there.
Any suggestions on how to make it better. I take quite a lot of pictures and have been doing it on my S3 without any major complaints. In fact, I love SGS3 camera, and upgraded to S4 thinking it'll have a better camera, but that's not my experience till now.
Thanks!

Menu, settings, about, software update. See if you have an update. There was one last week and part of it was an upgrade of the camera software I think.

Thanks for the reply! I did upgrade the software as soon as I connected my phone to wifi. I think that was the only update ever since S4 launched. Any other suggestions? I do believe that this is not a common issue, I read some camera reviews and everyone seems to be praising the shutter speed, so they must be talking about a different camera than what I have
i have the same issue, i have newest software, just updated by ota. when i press sutter button i have to wait one second for picture is actually taken... so big lag, with s3 it was instant - zero shutter lag.

That's it! That is what I am experiencing. Not sure how to fix it. If you find anything, do let me know. I'm also looking around and trying different settings. My S3 had a super camera with no lags and pictures come out crisp, that's not what I'm getting with S4.

Is the delay there when you use the voice command?
At least I am not alone. Thanks to everyone who replied. Can someone disable "auto night detection" in camera settings and see if it makes any difference? I tried changing this setting and do feel some difference but cannot tell for sure. I have seen that when you take a picture in dark and when auto night detection is enabled, shutter speed is a lot faster than usual.
I am hoping we'll find some answer within the existing phone/camera settings and dont have to hack the camera, or in worst case, change the phone.
Thanks!

When focusing instead of letting the phone do it tap screen let it lock on then take the picture, I've had no problems using the camera on my phone pics have come out sharp.
But i do agree the camera software itself still needs abit of work doing yet, this will more likely get sorted out in future updates.

Same here! I took quite a few pictures today outside in sunny weather and was very disappointed to see some blurry shots. Never had any such complaint from S3 camera. This is very disappointing. I hope samsung do something about it.

Also, your hand has to be VERY still to take pictures that are in focus are not blurry. Rather disappointed as the software is absolutely awesome.
Sent from my GT-I9505 using xda app-developers app
Complaining here won't help - you all have to spam Samsung with lots of emails.
This is not something that is going to get fixed with a software update, maybe improved but not fixed. Having a 13 MP camera using tiny lens and sensor will inherently cause a situation where it takes longer to gather a sufficient amount of light, hence longer exposure times and slower shutter speeds. This is the price to pay for being able to capture lots of detail out of a tiny camera. The S4's camera should not be used to capture moving targets.

At the current moment, there is no way to utilize the camera to its full extent. the autofocus sucks worse than a hungry hooker. There is a physical hardware capability to have manual focus. Unfortunately its hard/impossible to access this through the app development process. the drivers just aren't groovy. there have been phones with this feature in the stock camera but they were not nexuses. we desperately need the ability to have manual focus in out camera apps

Can you enlighten me as to which phones had manual focus cameras? It would be great to have this feature!
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
I suppose it depends on what you mean by manual focus. It is impossible to get a good manual focus from a real-time LCD screen when compared to the camera's autofocus mechanism (even in DSLRs). Even with an optical finder, it can be tough to match the precision that the chip and software can achieve.
But a "focus lock" would be of tremendous value. A simple mode, that when switched on, would allow you to tap the screen to get a focus lock on that point, and maintain it until another tap. And a similar setting for exposure lock is needed as well. The camera app has a nice intervalometer, but it is useless for creating nice time lapses when exposure and focus params are reset between captures.
Ive never seen a phone with manual focus........how would you focus the lens? lol
I think you need to relax. Multiple threads posted across multiple subforums and even posting in the wrong section. I havent had any issues with the auto focus yet. If it wont focus in low light situations, turn on flash and touch the screen so it focuses in before taking the picture.

I think he means where you tap on a particular part of the screen and the camera re-focuses on the item there.

you know how your view gets blurry then gets sharp thats focus, and im looking to be able to control the distance manually with a slider, like zoom except not zoom its focus, there is a capability but it hasnt been harnesed yet
It would also be nice to zoom on a specific spot not dead center.

the auto focusing is probably my most hated feature of this wonderful phone. I love the phone but good god its awful. You should see the horrific pictures it took the other day with a small amount of motion. Stupid thing looked like it was trying to lock on a target from the glory days of top gun.

I agree, its difficult to get good pictures. mine always turn up out of focus/motion blurred (even when subject is still, if that makes sense). My GNex took way better pictures, IMO.
I think the op means continuous autofocus not tap to focus
Zoom maybe.

Hello xda members, I bought this phone because i thought it would be an awesome phone. Which it kind of is but still not. And i am writing this so people who wants to buy this phone gets a some information about the phone. And yes i know there are a thread like this, but one is only positive and the other is only negative etc.
In general this phone is a beast, it look good really premium feeling. But when using it for a couple of days i fins so much in this phone that is really bad that i seriously consider changing phone.
I am not make this phone look bad or so, it is still a awesome phone but these things is not acceptable imo. And all of these things that i will write are IMO
- ´The camera is really good, it takes sharp pictures and is quite good when it is dark (but should be better), but god damn the camera app is terrible. There are no options at all! You can't do a sh*t, and when taking pictures of "landscape" the picture turns out great, but when you zoom in every single detail is blury as hell (look attachment). A phone with 20MP should have much better camera app and more features.
- The battery life isn't good, I used only GSM and no wifi, lowest brightness and the only thing i did was texting and looking at the clock. But the phone was still consuming quite a lot battery..
- The wifi performance is bad, i have a samsung galaxy s2 too and i put the phones on the table and my samsung has stronger signal (which leads to "faster" internet).
- The viewing angels are bad but it's okej i can live with that not such a big problem.
- The bezel is way to big, the phone could be smaller and still keep the display size, because the phone feels a little bit to big and doesn't feel so good in the hand.
- And last but not least there are a few things they should fix in their "ROM", that are bugging me.
But overall it really is a great phone, but these things makes me consider changing phone.
Hope those of you who want to buy this phone thinks this is useful.
The first picture is in auto mode, and the other one is in manual mode.
have to agree with you on the camera. when you take a photo it looks really nice, but when you zoom in it's a like a painting lol. no sharpness whatsoever. hopefully it'll get improve with further update. i thought the battery would be much better, but i find it the same as my old htc one and that's 2300mah.

Not my experience at all. These aren't even the sharpest shots I've taken - you should see the ones I snapped of the outside of the Natural History Museum. Hell, you should see the ones I took of the ceiling inside the natural history museum.

It's a cameraphone,... I'm just not sure what people were expecting. Of course it's not a DSLR but it's pulling in far more detail in every 8mp image than any 13mp phone picture I've taken.

I did - self selected Night Portrait mode at 8mp 4:3. The other version of this shot was actually captured using superior auto (I know!). SA decided to turn on "Spotlight Mode" as the interior of the truck was bright and the exterior was in full darkness. It became a very interesting shot!
The full samples are in the link (above). Click on the image in the gallery. This takes you into Lightbox mode. Then right click the image and select "original". This is the full resolution image. Right click again, select "Save As" and resize and inspect to your heart's content.
All of the images in the gallery above are as they were out of the phone. No post processing, no photoshopping. Many of them were taken in Manual with me selecting scene modes but if you see a 16:9 shot it was taken with Superior Auto.
Well i must say i had HTC One which was tricked out, with a modified stock rom and a custom kernel with all the bells and whistles, I use my z1 with wifi connected when im at home and 3g when im out and about, its my main media player, so i use it for mp3's and what not aswell as whatsapp and a few other apps, i got to say the battery life is about the same as my old htc one, bearing in kind, the z1 has a bigger screen and a faster processer. Ok i agree with the bezel it could be better, its still a well built phone and in terms of looks i think the htc one is the only phone which will top it for now.
I dont know whats wrong with your z1 but my pics come out great but then again i dont use superior auto mode, i have no issues with wifi, i get very good speed even when i only have 2 bars. it is known that some phones do not give an accurate read out(GIYF). How long has this phone been out? and how many updates have been made? its a brand new phone only released a few weeks back, fixes will come out, have some patience.

There is nothing wrong like that the picture a really good it's just that the pictures taken at landscape shown in attachment. everything becomes blury when zoomed in. And that the camera app kinda suck if you compare to other phones even though this phone has a great camera and that the camera is something sony focused on.

My friend i own Xperia T and Xperia Z1 and so far the Xperia T is THE BEST CAMERA PHONE EVER.
The quality when you zoom in to the pictures with Xperia T is better than my digital cameras.
The noise at Xperia Z1 pictures is worst than my Xperia arcS.
The same think happened with Xperia Z also.
After the update to 4.2 the camera quality went to [email protected]
I hope that is a software problem that can be fixed.
Last but not least.
Xperia T at superior auto captures at 12Mp and the Z1 flagship at 8Mp.

Yes I had this problem and it was taking so long to boot I thought the phone was dead.
Finally after waiting as long as 10 minutes for it to boot it started up. It would get very hot during this and use as much as 5% of battery. I found it would do the same thing even when booted in safe mode or after I had removed all of my apps.
From what I can see it is some sort of software problem that happens after the installed apps are updated when you initially configure the phone. I can't tell which app is the problem. Another weird thing is that it was carrying over settings from my last phone (lock screen text etc) that are not compatible and this may have been a problem as well.
I did a factory reset and setup again and it did the same thing after a day of use. So I did a factory reset and then did not upgrade the apps or do a sync right away to my Google account and so far so good and I powered off and back on this morning with no issues. So I am not going to update the core apps for now and maybe I have it fixed.

yea i know, but i meant when you have 20MP there are no settings you can change only when 8MP, but the biggest lack (imo) is that they don't have features like for example drama, slow motion etc that galaxy s4 has, htc one also has the slow motion thing.
Hi Everyone,
My last phone was a Galaxy Nexus and the camera on it was well known to be ****. Yet I'm finding it nearly impossible to get a decent shot using the GN3's - it's by far the worst camera I've ever used and it's meant to be 13MP. I know Megapixels are largely meaningless but I get blurry shot after blurry shot.
The problem is, I suspect (I hope?) that this is partly due to me being terrible at photogeraphy and not really knowing what to do to get the best results. What I mean is, I've pretty much left all the settings on "auto" and hoped for the best, which from what I've read is actually meant to be pretty reasonable but I've yet to take a single decent pic with this thing. I've narrowed it down, I think, to two separate issues.
Here's a shot I took earlier today, in a brightly lit supermarket:
http://i.imgur.com/Blcjlo5.jpg
This is with image stabilisation ON. Now I'm not the best at taking pictures, certainly, but I can get much, much better results on my crappy GNexus. The above is a pretty typical example of the kinds of pictures I'm getting, incredibly blurry ones. Is there a way to (for example) reduce the shutter speed or something to help with this? I have no idea what I'm talking about.
Now here's a picture of my (slightly disgruntled) cat. This is probably the best picture I've managed to take yet:
http://i.imgur.com/itd9LM9.jpg
But look at the state of it! it's not clear or crisp at all, it seems to have some sort of awful filtering all over it. It kind of reminds me of what you get when you use an Emulator and turn on all of the texture enahncements.
Has anyone got any suggestions? I'm really just looking for some help picking the settings that will give me the best results in most cases. I don't take that many pictures so I don't mind if I lose out in certain specific situations, I just want to be able to pull out the phone, take a pic or two and be done with it.
And before anyone says it, I'll be the first to admit that I'm an utter, utter n00b at this.
Thanks!
Having image stabilisation on is your problem right there. It slows down the shutter speed considerably. You're supposed to only turn it on in low light conditions in the event that you don't want to use flash.

Holy crap, you hit the nail right on the head there. It's a bit backwards that "image stabilization" causes massively blurry pictures, I'm sure I'm not the only person that made such a silly mistake. Thank you, kind sir!
Bought this app as part of the Play Store sales that just happened. So far it's the best camera app I've tried with the N5. UI is decent, solid amount of features, and shutter speed seems much improved for me.

I'm glad you posted this, most of the camera apps I've tried, even those that have been updated for Nexus 5 and 4.4 compatibility all seemed to act weird when tapping to focus, the exposure on screen would flash really dark and often times stay dark.
This doesn't seem to have that issue, so thanks!
Heres a few random macro/close up shots I took.
Just tried it out much better than the stock camera app in my opinion will be using this one
Can confirm this app rocks! Much much better focus speed and picture quality too. Its on sales now ( I'm not promoting for this app )
Thank you very much for this find!
I have tried so many different camera apps (cameraFX, Camera Awesome,...) until now, and none of them did work out really well.
This one is fast in autofocus, Burst Mode is working and the pictures look great!

Tried the free app... Bought the paid version within 5 minutes. Until Google comes with a fix for the camera, this is going to be my default camera app. Thank you OP. Great find...!!!

It has a reduced noise option that takes two pictures then merges them together.

Holy [email protected]! This app is a HUGE improvement over the stock camera! Thanks to y'all for pointing it out and recommending it/ showing it off! :highfive:
Just bought it. It was 99 cents so I guess not a big deal to try out. I noticed the auto focus isn't great but tap to focus works better than stock. Is it supposed to have a native video recorder? When I clicked "camcorder" it tried opening my stock video camera and then crashed. Also, I'm not sure if the "reduced noise" is usable. It's fairly slow to take the pic as well as to process it.
EDIT: Nevermind about the video, just read on the app page it doesn't support it.

Well, the HDR+ in the stock camera app mode take longer to process too.

Sorry, I meant that the "reduced noise" in the app takes much longer to process than HDR+
Nice app 10x

I honestly can't figure out which is better for the life of me.
Stock camera is awesome. But if only I am taking photos with shutter button. On screen button makes the camera focus again after initially locking focus with touch, although it remembers where to focus.
This may cause some lost moments due to delay in shutter speed.
Now, Google Camera, on the other hand, takes photos instantaneously. Much faster than stock camera from my observation. Lock focus with touch, then either on-screen or shutter button takes photos instantly. This makes me a very happy photographer.
But this might mean that I am losing out on Sony-powered enhancements they made for the stock camera, so I am doing various of tests to see which camera is superior.
As for now, both camera takes exceptional photos, but I can noticing differences in color, where Stock makes colors colder where Google makes it bit warmer.
Which camera do you guys prefer?

can you post some samples from both apps
For me stock all the way. I had a phone with very Shutter speed without focus before. Problem was half of my pictures came out blurry. I'd rather wait a milisec for the focus and have a sharp picture than hammering that button and hope for the best plus for me it's always really hard to keep the cam steady when pressing the touch button. As I said half my pictures came out blurry and out of focus with my sgs3. With the z3 every picture is perfect so far. Never had so much fun with a smartphone camera. And that because of the ergonomics and not because of megapixlz.
But why not have both apps side by side and use the one better suited for the situation?

Galaxy phones are the same i guess. I have an s5, previously moto x and iphone 5 user. Never had blur in my photos, but with galaxy s5 out of 10 i take 7 will be blurry but camera quality is really good if its not blurry on the s5 especially day light
Speaking of cameras, can you turn off the shutter sound in either of these camera apps?
I could turn it off on my old xperia acro s, but apparently Sony has decided this feature was too powerful for the z3 compact.
Sony stock cam offers "no sound" option in settings

yes, actually I was trying to say the same, just should have added the quotation marks or a dash right away
What settings are you guys using for the stock sony cam? I cant seem to get photos that are as sharp as I'd like. They look great on the z3c display, then i look at them on my laptop and am disappointed. Tried SA, manual, 8mp, 15mp, and all sorts of other settings.

Haha ok. Sometimes it's hard to figure tone on the internet. :silly:
Last time I tried the Google Camera it didn't like the 2 stage shutter. I think Sony did a decent number on the Camera app, so will be using it for the time being.
I am also using the default camera app. Its awesome!
I think the google camera needs a overhaul. Its good for just point and shoot but it lacks features. Lets hope Android L apis can help with this.
I figure I'll keep the stock camera as well as Google camera installed for different purposes. Stock camera for everything else, and Google camera for panoramas and photo spheres. Have not compared the difference in panorama shots between stock and google camera yet though.
I found google camera to be worse in low light situations. However the app Camera jb+, gave me better results allround compared to the stock camera.
Sorry to dig up that rather old thread...but something is bugging me! I can't seem to find the setting to turn out ff the sound

This is quite weird since I have a "sound" option in the same menu as you posted.. What firmware are you on?
Crazy...then I'd think its based on what country's firmware is installed...I'm from Germany and some users report (on older Sony xperia z's) that they can't disable the shutter sound.
What coutry are you from? Is there a way to get the camera app from another software? I heard there are also complications with DRM

Sweden :good:
Maybe with the google camera app you can switch off the sound
The DRM complications might relate to unlock/root where some lowlight functions get lost for good - but if rooting/unlocking isn't a matter of life and death I wouldn't do it until a safe method is found.
I'm from germany (german stock .77 ROM, no branding etc.) and I have this option.
I'm a Google camera fanboy now. The stock app isn't consistent enough and too much time consuming. I like simplicity above the ultimate shot. Also like the photosphere ability. This way I can relive the moment in VR.
