I'm on 318 and it seems the camera takes a while to focus, and it gives a little beep. Does that mean I shouldn't capture until it beeps? I've noticed the picture quality stinks, and there are threads about that, so I guess its what I have to live with until smart peps figure out how to make it better. But, in the mean time, what's the best way to get decent pics from this thing. Wait for the focus, or should I be seeing the Sam quality without waiting for the focus beep? I swear, it seems to me that if I don't wait for the beep, the pictures look even worse than if I had waited for the beep.

To get the Bleep are you keeping your finger on the shutter
The way i do it is just a quick press it focuses in a sec and takes a good pic
Thing to remember its a phone not a camera it may be a 5mp camera but it has not got all the software a 5mp camera has.

Turn on the camera and just hold it in one place. It will focus and beep and the 4 corner things will turn green.
It should take better pics than it does. My hd2 running windows or android shoots this streaks camera to shame.
The streak does take and reply nice video though.

I don't hold the button at all. I just open the camera and tap the shutter to take a pic. I've never tried holding the button at all. I just noticed the camera focuses and makes a sound if you don't take a pic and just hold the phone still. And weather I just take a pic or wait for it to focus and beep and the corners change to green, it really doesn't matter because the pictures still aren't up to par with the hd2 pictures. Sometimes I also noticed the setting changes from 5mp to VGA on its own.

I'm using 318 and I haven't had much luck with it autofocusing correctly. I tried to take a pic of my christmas tree with the Streak and it missed on the focus every time. I tried pointing it at different parts of the tree but it missed every time. Not sure if it was the lights or the lack of solidness (is there a word for that?) that threw it off.
You might want to try taking pictures of different things first. The camera isn't the best but it does the job. Its probably the only thing I miss from my iPhone. LOL.

You can hold the on-screen shutter button and then when you release it takes the picture.
I find that this works better to keep hand-shake out of the image. You just keep your finger on the on-screen button and it will focus, then when you release, it snaps the pic.

What are the best settings for the camera to take optimum pictures?
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
Low photo resolution even if 5MP is chosen
Upgrade to 2.2 build 12821 recently, took a number of photos, but only realize today that the file size (resolution?) of those photos are really small i.e. around 500kb.
I have always set it as 5 MB. It was never an issue until I upgraded...
Sigh... previously I had the orientation problem, and now the resolution problem. Dissapointed with Dell software.
Look for an option for "reset to default"on camera settings. Mine also switched to low resolution after the upgrade. But it is back now.
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
The top button on screen is the camera settings. It is scrollable. At the bottom is "reset to default". Should do the trick
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
Mine kept resetting to VGA too. I think its sticking on 5mp now though

Have you tried various camera apps such as Camera360? Those seem to work pretty well also, plus they have a ton of options.

Is there a way to get the camera on the Streak to take pictures faster? I thought we had a fast phone here... why do I have to stay completely still for 15 seconds so I don't end up with blurry images?
If you're not exaggerating you have some serious problems. Either it's not focusing or there's something else eating up processor cycles.
My camera is faster than any phone I've had before, not as fast as a proper digital camera but fast enough.
i do experience a lag as well but not as bad as other phones and it is manageable. I've noticed if you increase the brighntess you don't have to hold too still and causes less motion blur in the pics.
Also look up vignette, its a 3rd party camera app which has many filters and effects.
I have the exact same issue. The camera takes forever to take a picture. I use the fine 2048*1536 resolution and it takes a good ten seconds from button press to shot. If anyone has any advise on how to speed it up, let me know.
Coreth5
On 2.1 (build 8105) it takes about 2 seconds on a bright day when pressing the on-screen shutter button. When using the 2-stage hardware camera button, it takes close to a second to auto-focus on the half-press, and about a half second to take the shot after proceeding to a full press.
It's no speed demon. It seems noticibly slower than my iPhone 3GS on iOS4.
If it's taking 10 seconds, there's someting really wrong.
My settings are Fine, 5MP, GPS ON, and everything else on auto/default.
I do agree that the camera on the streak is dreadful.
Especially compared to my Nexus which also has a 5MP Camera (ported over from the Desire) which takes absolutely amazing photos.
The Streak's photos are always way over saturated, over sharpened and the focusing takes a very long time.
Hopefully this will be improved in 2.2 or maybe we can even port over the camera from the Desire or something
Is it software that controls the camera function or hardware? Is it possible to have an app to improve the camera?

I've tried many different camera apps on the market and whilst they do offer some improvement (image stabilization, etc.) It still is limited by the slow shutter speed.
I imagine it's either hardware controlled and can't be changed (which i doubt) or it's controlled from the Kernel or something (which could offer room for improvement).
I don't know enough about android really, so i could be completely wrong
I've found a few apps that actually take faster pictures. Fast camera, which has a terrible resolution, takes pictures almost instantly. Retro camera (also low res) also takes pictures quickly. I think the camera speed must be limited by the hardware, which is unfortunate as I would say the camera is this device's weak point.
Ive also noticed my camera shutter pretty slow. Its slow indoors mostly. Outdoors is decent though.
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
I don't get why its a hardware issue. I tried the option in the camera setting to snap four photos in a row. It take great pictures and quickly maybe its because it lowers the resolution.

How did you set that resolution?, on my Dell with Android 2.2 I can only get 640x480 ubber ugly pictures...
Make sure your camera is in 5 MP mode and not VGA...it will set to vga if you've switched to the front camera and then back...when mine does that it takes several seconds to take the picture and then they are grainy and blurry.

I don't see any option to set it up. I'm running Android 2.2 from Dell (no custom firmware)...

Sorry if this topic has already been brought up but has anyone thought about the ability to improve our camera and camera recording quality?
I mean the camera is pretty good and takes decent pictures and also records pretty ok, but there's always room for improvement
Maybe some codecs swaps here and there or increasing the jpeg compression or something. I'm no expert in these areas but I thought it may be something for the skilled dev's to be interested in and of course we all can be test bunnies.
Hope alot of you get into this, let's make the most of out glorius Acer Iconia! And put other tabs to shame! Hear Hear!
I was trying to do some pictures and the camera is out of focus.
When you press the shutter icon the camera is doing the focus, you can see that is passing through a position where the picture is really sharp and crispy but unfortunately isc not stopping there.
I was trying different applications from the market without success.
Looks that is a software problem.
Do not forget that Acer has not too much experience with digital photography.
In comparison the photos taken with my Omnia 2 phone (also a 5M camera if I remember corectly) are super duper.
Let's hope that Acer will correct this issue in the next updates/upgrades
Same results, must be a software issue, shutter activation not synched with focus lock properly resulting in blurry, soft images.
I didnt think of that at all but yes its true.
But the next update is for Honeycomb Android UI only 3.0 to 3.1
But there must be someone that be creative about this and create a modd of some kind.
There is definately a software issue here, try this............
Take a shot on autofocus and then change focus setting to infinity and take the same shot.
On auto, the shot will be blurry, on infinity it will be sharp.
Dont think this is a HC issue, something Acer has to fix.
Not sure if you guys know this or not, but you need to hold the button until it focuses completely. If you just tap the button it will take a blurry pic. It was pissing me off to no end until I relized that lol.
Great find! I didn't know this.

I hold the button, and it'll do its focus thing, but it still goes past being clear and in focus and to blurry. Its definitely a software Issue I feel. It CAN focus and I see it in focus, but it goes right back to being blurry before I unpress the button. :-\
Is matter of camera driver I think, I've tried with other free apps from the market but no improvments.
I did not bought FXCamera, only in pay version is supporting 5M camera so I can not be 100% sure that is the camera driver or Acer camera app.
Did anybody used the FXCamera full version?

Thanks for the infinity thing, spread the Acer minions!
I was very frustrated with my A500's camera until I read heathen's post. Thanks! I hadn't thought of holding the button down, but when I do it definitely autofocuses to a sharp image. Then I release the button and get a perfect shot. I'm using Android 3.2 so perhaps Acer did do some kind of fix. As others noted, the shutter still fires before the camera has focussed if I simply press the button and release. (Is this a feature or a bug? ) What's the point of having the button operate in 2 modes?

This hold and focus feature is also on my android phone android 2.2.so its the same.my Iconia takes great pictures.just holding still is the key.
Videos are not so good.
But i have a awesome Nikon digital camera for real pics.
Under 3.01 and 3.1 when you held down the shutter there was a beep when focus locked. This does not seem to happen under 3.2 but it seems that you don't have to hold down the shutter any more, and I get proper focus with a simple shutter press.
Even though I suggested my GF to get the iPhone 3GS and 4S, I'm not a fan of iOS or any iDevice for that matter - I just don't like the lack of flexibility without jailbreaking.
Still, Apple has been able to do it over and over again, they find some missing feature, and nail it. They just implement it perfectly.
This time it's the AE/AF Lock.
I wish SGS II had this as an option, this would prove so useful with the autofocus problems it is having. And ofc it's a great feature both for still images and video.
If anyone knows about any fixes/patches/way to get this done on android/sgsII - This is the place to share!
The exposure lock will be available to apps in ICS .. i am hoping Google implementation of ICS camera will carry it too.
Keeping my fingers crossed ... i honestly feel the camera module on SGSII deserves better camera app capabilities
Could not agree more. I was freaked when realizing that it's not possible at all on our phone. Always liked that about camera+ from the apple app store

The SGSII has AF/AE lock. What drugs are you on? To AF/AE lock both at once, just hold down the shutter button on the screen. You will hear the beep and the focus box will go green. Now the AF/AE is locked you can pan the camera around and you'll see the focus is locked and the exposure doesn't change. Now you just let go of the shutter button and the SGSII will take the photo.
If you want just AF lock, you tap on the area of the screen that you want to focus at and you'll hear the beep with the box going green. Now you can move the camera around and you'll see that the focus is locked but AE is still active and adjusting the exposure. To take a photo in this mode, you tap the shutter button. If you hold the shutter button down instead, it refocuses and goes into AF/AE lock.
I've had this feature ever since I bought my SGSII in May.

It DOES work on video mode. SGS II has had this feature since day one. Stock Video Camera app just doesn't implement it. If you're a developer, it's easy to add to your app.
Here's a video I made testing no auto-focus & no auto-exposure for the SGS II...although this is for my private video recording app, not released & probably never will be.

Hi folks,
Just bought my new Black Galaxy S4 (I9505) yesterday and enjoying every bit of it, but camera has been a great disappointment. I'm not sure why but the camera has some really bad lag. So much so, I have started thinking that S4 has some sort of issue with camera. I tried searching on the interent, and could not find any other complaints on S4's camera shutter.
Is there anyone else having the same issue? Let me explain the issue; when I take a picture on Auto mode (or any other mode), there is a lag between pressing the camera button and when the actual picture is taken. That is probably understandable due to auto focus (?), but most of the pictures come out blurry. Also, the frame I see in the view finder is not the same as the actual picture. I mean, the subject in the frame at the time of when I see the picture has been taken, does not come out the same when I look at the picture itself. I'm no camera expert so trying my best to explain it well. I have disabled every sort of fancy features in my camera, as well as the whole phone (air gesture, smart screen, etc) (although I'm sure that has nothing to do with the camera performance) but still the issue is still there.
Any suggestions on how to make it better. I take quite a lot of pictures and have been doing it on my S3 without any major complaints. In fact, I love SGS3 camera, and upgraded to S4 thinking it'll have a better camera, but that's not my experience till now.
Thanks!

Thanks for the reply! I did upgrade the software as soon as I connected my phone to wifi. I think that was the only update ever since S4 launched. Any other suggestions? I do believe that this is not a common issue, I read some camera reviews and everyone seems to be praising the shutter speed, so they must be talking about a different camera than what I have
i have the same issue, i have newest software, just updated by ota. when i press sutter button i have to wait one second for picture is actually taken... so big lag, with s3 it was instant - zero shutter lag.

Is the delay there when you use the voice command?
At least I am not alone. Thanks to everyone who replied. Can someone disable "auto night detection" in camera settings and see if it makes any difference? I tried changing this setting and do feel some difference but cannot tell for sure. I have seen that when you take a picture in dark and when auto night detection is enabled, shutter speed is a lot faster than usual.
I am hoping we'll find some answer within the existing phone/camera settings and dont have to hack the camera, or in worst case, change the phone.
Thanks!

When focusing instead of letting the phone do it tap screen let it lock on then take the picture, I've had no problems using the camera on my phone pics have come out sharp.
But i do agree the camera software itself still needs abit of work doing yet, this will more likely get sorted out in future updates.

Also, your hand has to be VERY still to take pictures that are in focus are not blurry. Rather disappointed as the software is absolutely awesome.

Complaining here won't help - you all have to spam Samsung with lots of emails.
This is not something that is going to get fixed with a software update, maybe improved but not fixed. Having a 13 MP camera using tiny lens and sensor will inherently cause a situation where it takes longer to gather a sufficient amount of light, hence longer exposure times and slower shutter speeds. This is the price to pay for being able to capture lots of detail out of a tiny camera. The S4's camera should not be used to capture moving targets.
Hello xda members, I bought this phone because i thought it would be an awesome phone. Which it kind of is but still not. And i am writing this so people who wants to buy this phone gets a some information about the phone. And yes i know there are a thread like this, but one is only positive and the other is only negative etc.
In general this phone is a beast, it look good really premium feeling. But when using it for a couple of days i fins so much in this phone that is really bad that i seriously consider changing phone.
I am not make this phone look bad or so, it is still a awesome phone but these things is not acceptable imo. And all of these things that i will write are IMO
- ´The camera is really good, it takes sharp pictures and is quite good when it is dark (but should be better), but god damn the camera app is terrible. There are no options at all! You can't do a sh*t, and when taking pictures of "landscape" the picture turns out great, but when you zoom in every single detail is blury as hell (look attachment). A phone with 20MP should have much better camera app and more features.
- The battery life isn't good, I used only GSM and no wifi, lowest brightness and the only thing i did was texting and looking at the clock. But the phone was still consuming quite a lot battery..
- The wifi performance is bad, i have a samsung galaxy s2 too and i put the phones on the table and my samsung has stronger signal (which leads to "faster" internet).
- The viewing angels are bad but it's okej i can live with that not such a big problem.
- The bezel is way to big, the phone could be smaller and still keep the display size, because the phone feels a little bit to big and doesn't feel so good in the hand.
- And last but not least there are a few things they should fix in their "ROM", that are bugging me.
But overall it really is a great phone, but these things makes me consider changing phone.
Hope those of you who want to buy this phone thinks this is useful.
The first picture is in auto mode, and the other one is in manual mode.
have to agree with you on the camera. when you take a photo it looks really nice, but when you zoom in it's a like a painting lol. no sharpness whatsoever. hopefully it'll get improve with further update. i thought the battery would be much better, but i find it the same as my old htc one and that's 2300mah.

Not my experience at all. These aren't even the sharpest shots I've taken - you should see the ones I snapped of the outside of the Natural History Museum. Hell, you should see the ones I took of the ceiling inside the natural history museum.

It's a cameraphone,... I'm just not sure what people were expecting. Of course it's not a DSLR but it's pulling in far more detail in every 8mp image than any 13mp phone picture I've taken.

I didn't say that the pictures ain't sharp, they are sharp and really look good. But when you take a picture like the ones in the attachment it is very blury when you zoom in. But overall the sharpness is really good, but the camera app sucks big time, you can't change any settings, the old phones with 2MP had more options..
Btw nice pictures you captured with the z1

I did - self selected Night Portrait mode at 8mp 4:3. The other version of this shot was actually captured using superior auto (I know!). SA decided to turn on "Spotlight Mode" as the interior of the truck was bright and the exterior was in full darkness. It became a very interesting shot!
The full samples are in the link (above). Click on the image in the gallery. This takes you into Lightbox mode. Then right click the image and select "original". This is the full resolution image. Right click again, select "Save As" and resize and inspect to your heart's content.
All of the images in the gallery above are as they were out of the phone. No post processing, no photoshopping. Many of them were taken in Manual with me selecting scene modes but if you see a 16:9 shot it was taken with Superior Auto.
Well i must say i had HTC One which was tricked out, with a modified stock rom and a custom kernel with all the bells and whistles, I use my z1 with wifi connected when im at home and 3g when im out and about, its my main media player, so i use it for mp3's and what not aswell as whatsapp and a few other apps, i got to say the battery life is about the same as my old htc one, bearing in kind, the z1 has a bigger screen and a faster processer. Ok i agree with the bezel it could be better, its still a well built phone and in terms of looks i think the htc one is the only phone which will top it for now.
I dont know whats wrong with your z1 but my pics come out great but then again i dont use superior auto mode, i have no issues with wifi, i get very good speed even when i only have 2 bars. it is known that some phones do not give an accurate read out(GIYF). How long has this phone been out? and how many updates have been made? its a brand new phone only released a few weeks back, fixes will come out, have some patience.

There is nothing wrong like that the picture a really good it's just that the pictures taken at landscape shown in attachment. everything becomes blury when zoomed in. And that the camera app kinda suck if you compare to other phones even though this phone has a great camera and that the camera is something sony focused on.
Anyone experienced boot up failure and not being able to force reboot using power button and volume up button even after several times? coz i had this and didn't know what to do until it booted up after many trials!!

My friend i own Xperia T and Xperia Z1 and so far the Xperia T is THE BEST CAMERA PHONE EVER.
The quality when you zoom in to the pictures with Xperia T is better than my digital cameras.
The noise at Xperia Z1 pictures is worst than my Xperia arcS.
The same think happened with Xperia Z also.
After the update to 4.2 the camera quality went to [email protected]
I hope that is a software problem that can be fixed.
Last but not least.
Xperia T at superior auto captures at 12Mp and the Z1 flagship at 8Mp.

Yes I had this problem and it was taking so long to boot I thought the phone was dead.
Finally after waiting as long as 10 minutes for it to boot it started up. It would get very hot during this and use as much as 5% of battery. I found it would do the same thing even when booted in safe mode or after I had removed all of my apps.
From what I can see it is some sort of software problem that happens after the installed apps are updated when you initially configure the phone. I can't tell which app is the problem. Another weird thing is that it was carrying over settings from my last phone (lock screen text etc) that are not compatible and this may have been a problem as well.
I did a factory reset and setup again and it did the same thing after a day of use. So I did a factory reset and then did not upgrade the apps or do a sync right away to my Google account and so far so good and I powered off and back on this morning with no issues. So I am not going to update the core apps for now and maybe I have it fixed.

You have tried putting it in manual mode instead of superior auto right ?
manual mode you get more options than i've seen in any other phone camera
(exposure, white balance, iso, metering mode, focus mode, resolution, hdr, steadyshot to name but a few)

yea i know, but i meant when you have 20MP there are no settings you can change only when 8MP, but the biggest lack (imo) is that they don't have features like for example drama, slow motion etc that galaxy s4 has, htc one also has the slow motion thing.
