Returning Damaged Device - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Sooooo I got my warranty replacement yesterday and on my way to work today the old phone fell out of my pocket and the screen cracked. I realize Google says that if the issue with my device isn't covered by warranty then I will be charged up to the cost of the device, but has anyone dealt with this before? The issue definitely has nothing to do with being dropped (especially since it happened beforehand) but I worry they'll charge me anyways.

<3 Google
Contacted support and was upfront about what happened. They said since the damage I was returning it for was not the screen and since I was upfront and honest about it when it happened that they wouldn't charge me anything. Notes on my account yadda yadda. I read these forums all the time and I know people complain about Google but it's good to see there's a lot to appreciate and be happy for too!
Time to get a case...

Did they charge you? Later?

warranty replacement for 8525

hi guys. i have a cingular 8525 that ive had for probably about a year now. i think im slightly over the warranty but i may be just under it. not sure.
my 8525 has been giving me TONS of problems recently (probably right after the warranty was over, if it is lol) which is just my luck.
i got the red light several times. often times it refuses to charge anymore. and now since yesterday the speaker on the phone stops working randomly.
not just the loudspeaker but the speaker in the handset itself as well, so basically all sound stops, and no its not muted.
anyways i went into a radioshack store and noticed one of the guys working there had the new tilt. he said he got it by returning his 8525 under warranty and they gave him a new one, the tilt.
now, obviously getting a free tilt would be awesome, but at this point id be just as happy if they still replace my current phone. i would like the tilt though lol. anyways, here is the problem.
a few months ago, a friend of mine dropped my phone. the loudspeaker stopped working, and hence no sound was working on my phone. so i opened up the phone and found out that the plug had simply come undone. i found that out from this site. so obviously now my phone is out of warranty it no longer has the void sticker.
does anyone have any help or tips to help? im seriously considering trying to find some sort of void sticker to replace it. but i doubt that would work. would htc take the phone anyway? i dont know. id be afraid to get charged for another phone cuz i have no money right now because of college books etc.
any help as soon as possible would be MUCH appreciated, because i think my warranty is up any day if it isnt already.
thanks guys.
im guessing no one has a reply on this?
It sounds like you're out of luck man. I say it's one thing to upgrade or modify software on a phone, etc, because you can easily restore it before returning it, but it sounds like you're looking for methods to deceive the phone company. That's not cool. So that you don't put yourself in a situation of getting charged like $500 for returning a crapped out phone, look for a used one or something? Some of the things that they look for upon processing a returned phone is the VOID sticker, battery connectors, and any apparent physical damage caused by drops, etc. Don't do it! I'm sure you have several phones sitting around that you can pop your SIM card into to get you by?
well hey im not trying to deceive them in a bad way. so dont get me wrong here. its just that all i did when i opened the phone was plugged the speaker part back in, nothing else. that was several months ago. everything was fine until the past month when the phone started going downhill.
either way, i contacted att they put me through the warranty department, etc. i told them the void sticker came off. theyre sending a replacement phone, and i should get it by the end of the week. how to i restore the os's software? i am aware of downgrading back to att's wm5 version but is that all i need to do? would i need to change any radios, spl versions, etc?
thanks for the help.
oh yea and theyre sending me just another 8525. no tilt.... oh well haha.

Since when was deception EVER done in a good fashion??
Probably fall on deaf ears anyway since youve got a replacment 8525, lesson to learn here is the VOID sticker really is there for a reason.
um ok whatever. i dont see why i am getting bashed over this when you can find things such as this and more on this site. so we are too guilty to decieve htc over something simple as a speaker plug coming undone, but guilt free when tricking att into using there mediamax plan for basic phones as opposed to there pda plan, because it costs more?
funny that. and the best part is thats not even the sneakiest of things ive come across on these forums. but ok whatever. heh.
all im saying is its one thing because the speaker came unplugged. now if i had tried to completely replace a part, or tweaked with something in the phone itself, rather than just push the plug back in so i originally would not have to bother with a warranty exchange and go through all the trouble. i havent even had the phone for a year yet and its as of recent been going to ****.
but yea.....im a deceptive, lying cheating theiving bastard.
oh yea. and one more thing......given even if i was some sort of a con artist from this.....does htc video drivers come to mind? where as htc makes phones more expensive than an iphone (kaiser) but with the functionality of something of less than half the power? and im the theif? ok.
heh
Chill out man. This is an awesome board with tons of good information, and not some forum to go back and forth. I think all we were trying to say is next time as much as it sucks to do it, just get the warranty replacement. Enjoy your new phone.
im not sure if you received your replacement yet. But when you send your old phone into the warranty department they will check to see if the phone has been opened. The first thing they can check is the screws themselves they will show tampering. But also just when you think you have pulled one over on them you. you get a letter in the mail saying they are billing your account $450 due to your physical damage and tampering with the phone. They wont send your old phone back and you will get your next att bill and it will be $450 dollars higher than you expected. im not saying this will happen but i would watch out for this.
and if you really want to cheat warranty exchange. Do a warranty replacement wait a couple of days after the phone gets there and then call them up and say were is my phone. There policy is to ship out another right away. They will ask some questions but nothing serious and yes will ship out another phone right away. I know this not because i have done it but because i worked for att for 2 years in both csr and tech support.
well thanks for the info. i did not know there was a difference between warranty exchange and warranty replacement they both sound the same to me. anyways i believe the replacement is the one i did, as they sent me a refurbished phone, not a new one, and if thats what some were thinking i really did not care whether it was new or not, just a replacement phone. as for the screws i couldnt see any tampering evidence, the paint all remains intact. im usually pretty careful when it comes to screwing and unscrewing things. lol lets just hope i dont "Screw" myself haha.
oh and i was chill. i was just finding it funny that i was being directed as a theif by the comments. like i said its one thing for a simple plug but its not like i replaced the speaker or tweaked with something.
is the speaker plug easy to find, i had teh same problem dropped it and i can hear it when i shake it, its loose...but im worried its deeper than i can get to

G1 Completely dead

G1 just died today, no idea whats going on. I looked at my phone about half an hour ago and it was at 68% battery.
I just looked at it, and its dead, tried to pull out the battery, and put it back in. Still wont power on, connected it to the charger and the led didnt even turn on. I started looking for my backup battery, went back to the phone and it was on the T-mo splash screen and just faded out, waited for a bit, nothing. Replaced the battery, still nothing. Left it on the charger for a few minutes still nothing
I havent messed with the SPL or anything. I was rooted with my apps on my sdcard, and on Cyanogen 3.8.1 (no theme)
Any ideas? I dont think I'll be covered under warranty cuz I'm in Canada, and I just bought the phone used off someone in the states before it was released here
Sounds like a hardware failure.. It should be covered under the HTC warranty no matter where you bought it.. You'll probably have to pay shipping though.

Oh right... I thought I'd read about people with US g1's returning them to htc under warranty, but I could be mistaken.

Probably folks who erroneously thought they were returning to HTC for repair, when really it was T-Mo taking care of it. Repairs are pbb just contracted out to a third party tech repair service anyway. Cheaper that way.
CrownMe,
I am sorry to hear this, and I honestly hope that you can get this thing running again. Did you get it wet in any way? If so, I have some suggestions.
Also, I have a partially broken G1. If you end up selling or throwing away this thing, please PM me because I need the parts.
Thanks,
--Ed
nope didnt get it wet or anything (ever). It was sitting beside me the whole time in my belt clip.
What do u guys think is my best bet? calling up htc or t-mo ... I dont think T-mo will care cuz I'm not a customer of theirs.
... is there no other possibilities at all, other than a complete hardware failure?
I've been reading around a lot of other forums and was surprised to find that there have been a lot of phones that did just this--suddenly could not power on, even with a different battery and plugged in. In these cases, T-Mobile sent a replacement phone.
Does it do the power-up vibrate when you turn it on? If so, perhaps removing the SD card before boot? If not, it sounds a lot like the phone-of-death scenarios I was looking at.
Does anyone you know have T-Mobile? Maybe they could get service done for you through their contracts?
nope no vibration, nothing. I pulled my sd card and tried as well, still nothing. The phone seems to be absolutely dead. I called t-mobile, they told me they couldnt do anything for me but transfered me to htc.
Htc told me to send in my phone to them at my own cost. They will asses it, and if it's a manufacturers defect they will fix it (they claim they never replace anything) and send it back to me at my cost (since I'm not in the United States). If its not a manufacturers defect they will charge me $30 assessment fees.
I really cant think of this being anything but a manufacturers defect. The phone has never been exposed to water. Has been dropped a few times in the past, but never anything serious.
... I'm going to give it till tomorrow, maybe I'll find someone thats faced something similar and fixed it. If not I'll just send it in. I just dont want to be phonless for like a month and pay shipping back and forth (I find that a bit ridiculous)
ok just an update... I took my battery out of my phone, my sim card, and my sd card. and left it for about 12 hours.. Plugged the battery back in and the phone came back on!!!!!
I did get a bunch of error msg's though so I'm just going to re-flash my phone to 3.8.1 again

i have to pay for touchscreen problem?

i have had an evo since the day it came out, and about a month and a half ago i dropped it on the ground. the screen shattered, and i didn't have insurance. at the time the sprint guy said it wasn't a big deal, because the cost for repair was about the same either way. i paid about $130 and it was fixed half an hour later.
lately, about a month and a half later, i noticed some weird issues with the touchscreen. it was jumping around as if i had my finger on it when i wasn't touching it. i formatted the sdcard, did a factory reset, wiped everything, and loaded a stock rooted rom on it. it was fine for a couple hours, then i noticed the issues again. random scrolling, opening apps when i wasnt touching the screen, etc. i noticed the Y and G keys are now not working. i downloaded a screen test app that records where you have touched the screen with a white line. while sliding my finger up and down all across the screen, there is a noticeable band running vertically across the general area of the Y and G keys that does not record any touch activity even if i slide my finger there.
i took the phone to a sprint store and showed them. they asked if i had insurance and i said no. they said "well you could get insurance and then have it repaired for $35." i asked "why should i have to pay to have something repaired that i didn't break? the replacement screen is obviously defective." the guy said "well you should have insurance." and i again said "why do i need insurance for something that went bad on its own?" and he said "you had the repair done over 30 days ago so you'll have to pay to have it repaired again."
i have no idea why i should have to pay for repairs for a phone, regardless if i have insurance or not, when i didn't do anything to damage the phone. im going to go to the actual repair store here in chicago, but i doubt theyll say anything different. if they can't repair it for free, im seriously considering switching to a different phone company. this ridiculous service/repair policy along with the horrible battery life (the guy actually asked how my battery life was and tried to sell me an extended battery, and also tried to sell me a case... neither of which i care about), ridiculous $10/month fee, and lack of built-in tethering makes me want to switch back to tmobile which was a great company when i had the G1.
does anyone have any tips they can give me to get this fixed for free? or is that a hopeless idea?
thanks.
When you had the repair done, I'm sure there was a warranty period on the repair itself. Do you have any documentation showing what that timeframe is? It seems to me that if the screen repair warranty is up, you may be stuck paying for the new repair. Have you tried calling sprint with *2 and explaining the situation? I went through a similar situation with the screen developing a large white spot. It took many calls to *2 until somebody was willing to work with me. Try that. If you are not getting the answers you want, hang up and call right back. My persistence worked out eventually, but like I said, it was a time-consuming ordeal. Good luck.
i understand that there was a warranty associated with the last repair, but it still doesn't make any sense to me that a problem i am having with the screen has nothing to do with anything i did. the shattered screen is not the problem (the screen did not get shattered again, which was what the original repair was for). the touchscreen is simply not working properly. am i supposed to get insurance, pay for that each month, and then pay $35 now and again every 45 days if the problem continues? doesn't make much sense to me, but that seems to be how sprint operates. i will take your advice and call *2 after i get turned away at the actual repair facility that i'm on my way to now. thanks for your advice.
Go to another store and show them the problem but do not mention anything about the screen being replaced before, unless they noted your account. Hopefully they could replace it/fix it under warranty
Welcome to Sprint's "screw the customer" routine. Ive dealt with similar issues in the past.
Like others have said, the repair they did should have a warranty to it, just like if you go to get your car fixed, it usually has a 90 day warranty on the fix itself. Go back to where they fixed it, and talk to the manager. Explain your situation, that the repair obviously was faulty.
If that doesnt work, call *2, and ask to speak to account services. Explain your situation to them, how you are not at fault here, and shouldnt be treated this way as a valued customer. Tell them you will cancel your service if they dont help you resolve this issue. When you tell them that, they will bend over backwards to keep you, and hopefully send you a repacement phone.
I would say your best bet is calling *2 several times and trying to get a person who will help. Usually if you bounce around enough you may get lucky. Although, I have noticed that over the last 6 months they have really tightened down and become less willing to make exceptions. But these situations is what the insurance is for. If your phone was defective in the first 30 days, Sprint would repair it or replace it for free regardless of insurance, after that it's on the customer if you don't have insurance, regardless of the issue. If you had insurance right now you could get it replaced free with no deducible. I had a similar problem with my original EVO that I had since launch day last month. The touchscreen would just start clicking in the middle of the screen all on it's down. I have the insurance, so they replaced it with no questions asked. Your situation is sort of like a laptop, they only come with a certain warranty, and then if it breaks after that it's on you to fix it unless you have extra insurance or an extended warranty regardless of why it malfunctioned. I'm not a big fan of extra insurance either, but on a phone it is really worth it. Also, I am pretty sure ALL phone companies have the same sort of policy when it comes to fixing phones, so I doubt going to a different carrier would help you any. If your phone breaks without insurance through any provider after 30 days its coming out of your wallet. I would say, you might as well get the insurance and pay the $35 to get it fixed. That sounds like a good deal to me, because last night I broke the glass on my second evo, and with insurance the deductible to replace the phone is $100... so $35 sounds like a deal to me. If you don't want to do that, the only other option I see is going on eBay and buying a new screen/digitizer for $49 and putting it in yourself.

Under the new Sprint policy revealed here on XDA, isn't a non-TEP screen replacement, or anything else, $35 per job?
Update:
I went to a Sprint repair store (can't go to the original one because I moved across the country). They took the phone to the back room and came out five minutes later. The guy said "the tech said to get that touch screen test app off your phone because it isn't a good representation of what's wrong" ... I said "okay, well that section of the screen is clearly not accepting touch input" and he said to call a 1800 number to do a factory reset (?!) so I left and called that number and it was disconnected. haha.
I called *2, went through a bunch of menus, and it told me to call some 1800 number from a different phone. I got some guy who walked me through a factory reset which of course did not work. He said he would connect me to tech support, who I thought I was already talking to. Told her the problem and that the reset didn't work. She said it was a hardware problem and I said yes, and said I know it isn't her fault but that I didn't think it was fair for me to pay for a defective screen. She said she was making some notes in my account and was going to transfer me to an escalation manager. That person listened to my complaint again which I tried to word in a polite way. I didn't threaten to cancel my account but was ready to say something. I told her I would like to have a replacement phone since this one seems to have issues. She asked if it had been replaced before, I said no. She asked for my mailing address and email and put me on hold for about five to ten minutes. During that time, I got an email outlining my exchange order.
The exchange order notes that I could have to pay $75 to $125 for the replacement as well as some other fees, but she never mentioned anything about me paying at all so I'm prepared to call up and complain again if they try to charge me. I mean, I realize that's a policy but they never mentioned fees on the phone. I mean, i might as well have paid the $35 if I didn't mind fees.
Another thing to note is that when the guy at the store came out of the back room he had the battery cover off my phone and said the sensor showed it had gotten wet. I have never gotten it wet, and he said it was my fault if I kept it in my pocket. I will call and complain again if they charge me for returning a wet phone, because its not my fault if its such a poor design that minor sweat or pocket humidity can make it malfunction! I don't mean to nitpick but come on HTC...
one thing i HATE about calling any tech company getting shifted around to this person then to this person etc etc

Did you ask them what kind of warranty they provided with the repair?
No, I didn't (and still don't) think it mattered. If I break something, like I did, I expect to pay for it or have insurance cover it. Since I didn't have insurance, I was okay with paying. While I don't expect a repair to last forever, I think it is reasonable to expect the phone be repaired to like-new condition or with a new screen. Then, if I use the phone normally, with or without insurance, I expect the phone to function normally for at least the length of the contract.
Expectations and reality are two different things. Why don't you call the store and ask them how long they warranty their repairs and go from there.

I don't know what this guy is talking about! First with how much this phone cost why wouldn't you have insurance on it! It only equals 85 bucks for the year way less then the price of a new or used phone even with the 100 you have to pay to get a replacement your still making out good! I jumped in the pool with my phone and even though it still worked I got a replacement for a 100 no hassles! And my screen went hay wire on the replacement and when they couldn't repair it I got another one for free! I dropped my phone and damage the front facing camera took it to the Sprint store and got it fixed for free! So stop being cheap and get insurance

I am already getting a replacement phone for free, without insurance, if you read the entire thread.
As far as "being cheap" and "just getting insurance" you are citing two incidents where you caused damage to your phone. I agree that you or I should be expected to have insurance to cover damage to our phones that we cause. I am talking about a screen defect (I didn't drop my phone a second time and crack the screen a second time - the screen stopped accepting touch input in a huge area). people should expect more from electronics manufacturers and the phone companies that essentially work with them by accepting and promoting new phones. Electronics used to last, even when they had moving parts. Now we have a generation of people who are fine with devices that frequently go bad and having insurance to cover it. It seems to me Sprint and HTC are the cheap ones, pumping out thousands of the next "iphone killer" with poor batteries, screens, usb ports, etc.
The "issue" you are having with Sprint is that they no longer cover in warranty repairs at no cost. The phone comes with a 1yr warranty thru HTC. If you would like free in warranty repairs call HTC. Good luck with that one by the way. Normally you are responsible for shipping the device to the manufacture and you would be obviously without your phone for the duration of the repair. The manufacture usually inspects the phone much more closely as well. When I worked at another carrier we used to receive photos of corrosion internally of equipment that they determined was not repairable. Even though the external indicators showed no such damage.
If you have TEP $7/month you would receive replacement equipment for in warranty repairs if it can not be repaired by an in store technician. TEP covers all manufacture warranty and non-warranty items in house. If it is board level damage, water damage, lost stolen, or broken beyond repair it will be replaced by asurion for the $100 deductible.
Any warrantied item without insurance will cost $35 for sprint provided repairs. Exception being software updates. If the phone is out of warranty all repairs, software updates, etc will cost $35.
The incident when my phone went on the fritz and was doing the same screen things yours was I got a replacement free of charge!

My "issue" is also that sprint was providing in warranty repairs for one year when I bought this phone. Now they're trying to change that and then saying "oh just get insurance because its a good idea and would cover this." No. I'm getting a free replacement which is what I deserve. There is another thread that explains this change in policy.

That's a good explanation of what changed. It actually used to be like this way back in the day wth Nextel before the merger - you could get a warranty replacement for free, or you could pay $35 for the convenience of walking into the store and picking it up the same day. I'm not sure when it changed to free warranty repairs but you have to pay more for out of warranty repairs (first it was $35 or $55, depending on what's wrong, then later $99 for dumbphones and $119 for smartphones), but now it's essentially back to how it was to begin with.
Overall, It's probably a better value, and you're probably still better off without insurance. Think about it this way - suppose you keep a phone for 2 years, and it breaks once a year - once under warranty and once out of warranty. With the new plan, that's a total cost of $70 ($35 + $35). With the old plan, the first repair would be covered and the second wouldn't. so that'd be $119. Now obviously, that's a hypothetical, you probably don't need to get it repaired that often. but personally, I find that I generally don't need any repairs until I've owned it for a year or so anyway. So it's better for my purposes, although others might disagree.
Regarding TEP - in the long run you're not saving money unless your phone is lost or stolen, and even then you're out $100 for the deductible. Suppose you're phone is stolen once in the same hypothetical 2 yr period (since after 2 yrs you could get a discounted upgrade): You'll save $449.99 on a new phone at MSRP, but you will have paid $268 in premiums and the deductible. If your phone isn't stolen / water damaged / completely destroyed, you're out $168. I don't know about you, but in the last 11 yrs that I've owned cell phones, I've never had that happen - I've needed repairs, but have never been in a situation when I'd need to place an insurance claim. And the $35 you'll save on a repair with tep is only 5 months' premium - surely nobody needs a repair every 5 months!
The bottom line is that all insurance is a losing proposition in the long run - if it weren't likely that you'd pay more in premiums than you get in claims, insurance companies wouldn't make any money. Personally, i only insure those things that I absolutely can't afford to replace out of pocket - my car, house, health life, etc.
Anyhow, sorry to go on like that, but it's just a topic that's been bouncing around in my head recently.
(and a bit of fair disclosure, I'm a Sprint Nextel employee, but what I write here is purely my personal opinion)

Good luck, I have to wonder though if the fight, frustration and possible disappointment is really worth it.

Need some opinions on warranty replacement

So, here's my story.
The screen "died" on my Fascinate last Friday (4 days ago). When I took it off charge in the morning (I always charge it overnight), I noticed some discoloration in the center of the screen. Phone was still functional, but I really didn't look into much as I was leaving for work. After about 2 hours, I looked at the phone again and the screen was much worse. It now had an image burned on it and it was getting darker. Touch screen also stopped working about this time. Well, after another hour or two, I couldn't see anything on the screen except for a small bit at the very top of the screen.
I called the Verizon store over lunch and explained what happened, they patched to another tech support guy who had me pull the battery, which helped nothing. So, he put through to overnight me a replacement, which is arriving today. Well, I picked the broken phone this morning which has been powered off all weekend, and when I looked at it in the light I could see the screen underneath is cracked in an arch at the top. I have no idea how it could have happened. I'm very gentle with my phone and have no memory of when such damage could have occurred. This is the first time I noticed it, and you really have to look at it at the right angle to even see it. The glass on top is flawless and the phone shows no other signs of damage.
I'm really not sure what to do at this point. Is Verizon going to notice it and tack the $500 or so onto my bill? Should I call them and explain what happened? I'm pretty sure there's a good chance it will just slip through the cracks when they receive my broken phone, but I guess my conscience is getting the best of me. Anyone have any thoughts on my situation or experienced similar in the past with Verizon?
I'm guessing you have asurion insurance? I believe you can so 2 replacements a year. That being said... You're first replacement came in broken and I wouldn't accept it.

I do not, which is why I was happy when they told me it was a warranty replacement. My heart kind of sunk when I saw the crack
An arch from electrical current? If that's the case maybe call and tell them. Just be sure you don't have water damage.

Definitely no water damage.
Not an arch from electrical current. The crack is in a arch shape. No idea what the cause was. I'm just afraid once I send it back, they are going to see it and claim abuse and charge me for the replacement. If there's a good chance that could happen, I may want to just send the warranty replacement phone back and replace the screen in my broken phone for $100.
If the crack is under the main screen then i would say it will be covered easily. I had a BB Storm where the screen was fine but the digitizer shattered. Vzw store replaced it without a problem.
Sounds like a manufacturing defect to me . AFAIK your phone has a 1 year manufacturer's (Samsung) warranty so Verizon probably won't care to replace it since the replacement cost won't be coming out of their pocket.
"its cracked?" "it wasnt went i sent it. They must have dropped it in shipping" ive been told works with customer service, its not worth their time arguing with you.
One thing with verizon I have noticed it's they really don't have too much of a conscience when it comes to us customers, so why have one with them. Warranty replace it and claim it must have happened during shipment if they notice. doubt they will argue. I know some people misuse the warranty replacement thing, but apparently you aren't. I forgot to replace the official software bacl on one of my storm replacements (there were 11 total and they were all legit) they didnt even notice. Odds are the screen will get replaced and sent off to another customer and they will be none the wiser

Gamestop extended warranty scam

On July I've bought a TF300T on Gamestop... I've also bought the extended warranty...
Since few weeks ago I'm having some serious problems with the touchscreen, First it shows red areas where it is suposed to be black, some distortions, also shows some "ghost dots" like if someone was touching it even if no one is touching it, and most recently, sometimes with the tablet turned on the screen becomes completely dark or won't turn on at all.
Asus won't fix it since their warranty seal is broken and is unlocked (via asus unlock app but not rooted)...since here where I live Asus won't reach me a I took the device for repair since I need it for work...the guy told me that it's a factory problem... so no one can fix it but Asus...
The problem is that the seller at GameStop told me that the extended warranty would cover any changes on my device he said ANYTHING... etc... said that,,,
I went to the gameStop and they told me that their warranty will be valid only when Asus warranty expires,,, so I will have to keep the broken tablet for one year!!!!
Lessons learned:
1- NEVER BUY ON GAMESTOP AGAIN;
2- IF IN THERE'S NO OTHER GAME STORE ON THE PLANET... NEVER BUY THE EXTENDED WARRANTY
3- I WILL HAVE TO BUY AN IPAD.... SINCE A FRIEND HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE SCREEN RESPONSE AND APPLE GAVE HIM A NEW ONE....
I actually just bought an Xbox tonight and they offered me the extended warranty on that. Their explanation was: "If anything goes wrong with the system, as long as the damage isn't your fault (like dropping it out a window or something), you can bring the system and your receipt into any Gamestop. You hand it to us, and we hand you a new system on the spot."
My guess is, those guys were just dicks. Try another store. Bring your receipt, bring your device, downplay any personal fault. All they need to know is, you bought the device from them with a warranty, and it don't work anymore. Try another store, be polite, and don't tell them anything that you did wrong, like bring it in the shower or spill duck sauce on it, and I bet you'll be walking out of that store with a new Transformer.

Extended warranties...
First off, never buy an extended warranty. Those things are scams.
I have bought three and two of those three felt like ripoffs. I'll never know about the third because I never had to claim it.
Ages ago I bought an MP3 player at Best Buy (this was before the iPod had even been announced). I decided to buy the extended warranty because this was an MP3 player with a built-in hard drive, and at the time that seemed like a pretty exotic setup and I wasn't too sure how long they would last. Well, it wasn't 'till I got home and read the fine print that I discovered that I had been sold a "one time replacement" warranty. So if I device died the next day, Best Buy would replace it and that's it: no more warranty. Now needless to say, that's not what I thought I was buying. I thought I was buying two years of warranty coverage. (FWIW: that MP3 player was stolen, and I eventually replaced it with an iPod I and later an iPod V. Though I've replaced the battery a couple of times, my iPod V has been going strong for seven years on that same Toshiba hard drive).
The second extended warranty I bought was on a refurbished Sharp laptop. This was a warranty straight from Sharp. Well, when the laptop stopped working one day I sent it in for repair. Sharp refused to honor the warranty claiming that 1) the laptop had been dropped and 2) I should never have been sold an extended warranty on a refurbished laptop in the first place. Now, I'm pretty sure that the laptop was dropped by the previous owner because I know that I never dropped it, and everyone in my family denies having dropped it themselves (though I cannot be 100% sure, of course).
But I agree with the other poster above: try a couple more GameStops before you give up.
It depends who you deal with really. Employees at best buy are the same way.
