TMobile Throttling Unlimited Data on Video Apps??? - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Update -
Issue is resolved. Call Tmobile and have them disable the Binge On feature from you plan and have them reset your cell connection. I have done this and can confirm the issue is fixed.
So, flashing the Pure Nexus Rom has given me some proof on some shady stuff going on the Tmobile network, thanks to the feature which shows your real time data speed in the notification bar.
I am an unlimited data customer, and as of a few days ago, I cannot watch an HD video on Youtube without lag, which is weird because Tmobile in Dallas is very fast, like 50+ mbps. I have always watched 2k video without any issues.
I noticed that whenever I run any video app like Hulu, Netflix, or YouTube... the download speed will not go above 1.5 mbps. Whenever I do anything else, like download an app or run a speed test, it goes much faster.
Look that these screenshots... this is some serious BS going on! I can confirm that the 1.5mpbs speed cap is also happening on Netflix and Hulu, but I cannot take screenshots in those apps because the apps block that.
Anyone else on the Tmobile unlimited data plan experiencing this BS?

Wonder if it's related..

When I talk to customer service... They give me some bs that they cannot accept my problem because my Nexus 6p is not a tmobile phone. I hit them back with the fact that my brother has a tmo galaxy s5 and it's doing the same crap to him. We are on the same plan.

It could be binge on. It detects that you're streaming and does some tmo magic maybe throttle to "optimized streaming video" they said there was a way to request to have it disabled. I didn't think YouTube was part of binge on though.

That's what I think also. But I remember that youtube was part of the Binge

It's actually not part of the binge on program, it's something that they said they were trying to work with Google on.
It could just simply be you went past your monthly 'unthrottled' limit and are now deprioritized when streaming video, possibly.

I called and they confirmed that I have not gone past my limit and that I should not be throttled in any way
I've used only 11gb so far, and throttling occurs at around 20gb

I was just in Hawaii, where T-Mobile isn't that great and had no issues streaming the TWC app. It would lag and stutter initially, but would be fine after a few seconds. This was on my Note 4 before I got my 6P though. I was getting about 20mbps down on LTE.

I would check your settings on your T-Mobile account. Binge On was turned on automatically for all customers, so log onto your account, go to profile, turn off the setting and see if that helps. I attached a screen shot so you can see what the settings look like.

Welcome to the uncarrier, who decides how you use your data...

Try to go through a VPN, then stream your video again. If it changes then you know it's a throttling issue. But don't just try it in one area, sometimes there is congestion.

Thanks for this tip!
I changed the setting. Now let's see if it fixes my issue.

Just turn Binge On off on your account. It's enabled by default, and it "optimizes" your video so you use less data, but it means the quality suffers. Only certain services don't count against your data, but all video is optimized with Binge On enabled.

On VZW UDP... I've noticed that (what seems to be in the last few months) when on cellular, YouTube automatically defaults to very low resolution video... Like 144p or 240p. I have to click the options and manually change the resolution. It looks like you've done your homework, just figured I'd throw this out there or at least share that I'm experiencing something similar with VZW.

I think that is just the youtube app. I always have to change mine to 1080 or 1440 when my data works just fine.

I never have to change mine. Sometimes/most times It starts off a low resolution but after a bit it changes automatically. Other times it just starts off at 1080p.

I resolved the issue!
I called tmobile, they confirmed that the binge on feature has been disabled on my account, and they reset my connection. When it came back up, this is the speed I'm getting o youtube.
Looks like YouTube is also on the binge on feature.

Thanks all for this, trying this setting change now.

OP updated with the resolution info

As I said above, YouTube can be optimized with Binge On for reduced data use, but it's not part of the free streaming.

Maybe you guys can help me out, 1 problem/1 question

I'm having one huge issue with this phone, and that is it not staying connected to the 3G at my house. I can sit in my living room and have 3-4 bars of 3G service, as can everyone else in my family, and my phone will just plumb disconnect and give me that lovely error message that you must "dismiss" before going on. Now if it was once in a blue moon I might be more forgiving, but it's all the time, literally almost every 2-3 minutes if I'm surfing. I don't really want to hard reset my phone because I'm not sure it will solve the issue, so if anyone has any advice here that would be fantastic. This is a freakin expensive phone, and I would hate for it to not work right after jumping through T-Mobile's hoops to get it. My friend's HD2 also has this issue and it's quite frustrating for both of us.
Now on to my question. Is it possible for Windows Mobile to even play 720p video? I have an mp4 copy of Kung Fu Panda for instance, that is 720p resolution and only 800mb, with a total bitrate of less than 1200kbps, and none of the media players (Album, WMP, TCPMP) will play this file at all. I didn't figure it would be that big a deal for this processor but I'm just curious, it's kind of a pain to re-encode EVERY video for playback on the phone. I have some MKV TV shows that are smaller files as well but 720p resolution and TCPMP won't play them either. Anything with that resolution causes TCPMP to crash. I was curious as to whether this was the phone not accepting the resolution or the audio track, which is a 5.1 surround track. I love this website and searched for both of these issues and couldn't find anything useful, so I have to ask y'all
Well, Homestar1217, I am also located in the DFW area and have the same problem. I constantly have to go to wireless controls in settings and turn my Data connection back on! You're right! It's VERY annoying!
It's probably the codec/container that you're using for your 720p file that's the issue.

Okkkkk... and in english? Please?
It is extremely annoying. If I hadn't already passed my 14 day return policy I'd be taking it back pronto. The new vibrant catches my eye at this point. Quite honestly I'm disappointed with this phone. Both browsers are sub-par, it took forever for me to figure out just the right bunch of settings on 3 different pieces of software for proper video conversion, swype has about a 25 second delay in the sms app before it lets me type, and mainly, it can't even stay connected to the network! I got this guy because of the processor, but it seems like all of the effort went into Sense, and no one tried to optimize the rest of the OS for the beast of a processor that it packs. Anyways, didn't mean to turn this into a complaint post. One 720p file is AVC with an mp4 container and video bitrate of 932kbps, and audio is AAC 6 channel at 278kbps. the other is an MKV with AVC video at 3476kbps and AC-3 audio at 384kbps, also 6 channel. I thought TCPMP would play those files but it crashed on both. I hope all that makes sense to you guys, it does to me

as far as TCPMP goes ... have you soft reset since you installed it? It crashed repeatedly on me before I soft reset, then, magic
if you want a different phne but are past the 14 day ask tmobile to send a new hd2 if you have the unit replaced 3 times in a 90 day period you are eligible for a handset exchange, I'm in this process right now... on my 3rd HD2 and i have the same data issue, after this i can upgrade to the mytouch slide,
*edit* as long as there is no heavy physical damage a.k.a. drop....
Just an fyi...I am in that third phone catagory. You won't get the phone you want...they offered me a Dash 3g! I said "That's not a comparable phone". They said that was the exchange phone and now they're sending me my 4th HD2. I'm having terrible lag issues while texting.
joe the lag issues might be happening because your threads are getting too big.i was having the same lag issue through the regular t9 texting then i switched over to swype in the settings and had a 15 second delay before i could text and realised after some help from this forum that there was too many messages in some contacts threads so everytime it gets to around 60 messages i just delete the thread. This happens with a lot of phones not just this one so give it try and see if it helps with your problem.

No more Vibrant...

For now......
No, Im not switching over to another phone and crying about how my GPS didnt work, or that tmobile unlimited data isnt unlimited 3g Data after 10gbs. I just lost my phone . Im sure who ever found it at the club is enjoying the bionix 1.4 rom it had.
The bad part is that asurion has them on backorder so I was told it would be around a week for them to have it available. It sucks but atleast the process was super easy. Only took like 5 mins and they aproved my claim with no questions asked.
I went back to my Iphone 4, luckly i hadnt sold it. Runs really smooth compared to vibrant, specially the internet browser. But I truly miss the 4in screen and most importantly 3G speeds!!!

Wave Secure is another good one. Remote Wipe through text message, remote lock, remote track, and if you install it as a system app, you can remote enable GPS.
And if you install the addon, it can't be uninstalled.

Most people will remove the SIM card from the phone (can't get text messages), and most people will just factory reset the phone if it's not locked (or from the buttons if it's not a defective vibrant).
That's like putting a password on a laptop, when it boots up and says "Press F10 for System Recovery"
Thoroughly useless.
I'm enjoying my 3G speeds too. Thankfully, unlike AT&T -- T-Mobile preemptively set a choke chain on your type of usage. I hope you've resumed your old AT&T account and got your unlimited data back.
It's more like 5Mbps but Speedtest.net doesn't work properly for me at all, 30 percent and it jumps to completion before it has the chance to reach max speed. I've downloaded a few files at 500Kbps+, which means the speed I'm getting is more or less around 5Mb/s

[Q] Data pauses at random on AT&T

Hello Everyone,
I've been having this issue for a while (4.2.1 and 4.2.2) where web pages/images/streaming audio simply stop loading at random. Data Arrows stop and about 20 seconds later, it may finally load. The progress bar in chrome freezes during this. Refreshing the page loads the content instantly. Pandora/Slacker typically require a song skip to resume play.
The most reliable way to replicate is browsing imgur gallerys where it happens almost every 5th image. Moving around the city produces the same problem and AT&T says everything is fine on their end. APN settings are correct as well as seeing above average speed tests on HSPA+.
I've tried searching on several popular Nexus 4 forums and found no reports of this problem.
It does not occur on Wireless, only Mobile data.
Does anyone else have this problem (radio to blame) or is my phone possibly defective?
Wiping the device clean and flashing 4.2.2 stock produces the same results.

Ive been having this same problem. When my phone is on wifi data works fine but sometimes when i am using cellular data my data will cut out just like yours. Im on ST with AT&T and i think it has a lot to do with their network not so much your phone.

I'm having the problems. It's specially obvious when sending a Whatsapp message. It sits idle for a while then eventually the message gets sent.
+1 I often need to refresh Web pages and such to get them to fully load even with perfect h+ data. I'm also on att with Straight Talk, wonder if anyone knows of a fix.
Nexus 4
ATT Straight Talk $45/mo
running xylon nightlies 4.2.2 franco r83
^(subject to change often)^
I had an much higher amount of occurrences when I was originally on Straight Talk AT&T. Porting over to true AT&T resolved a lot, but they still exist.
This leads me to believe it may just be AT&T's network, but wouldn't other phones experience the same? None of my other friends on AT&T (with different phones) have experienced this or they simply don't notice.
I get the same problem as well. It also happened on my inspire when I was using that a couple years ago. Never could figure out why. I guess its a network issue.

If you are using an AT&T mvno or using prepaid AT&T, this is normal.
AT&T prioritizes postpaid traffic over prepaid.
Even happens on all iPhone models I've owned. (3gs, 4s, and 5)

[Q] Google play store eating

I have recently had high data usage on my bill, so I checked the data usage and it shows the play store used up quite a bit. I decided to test it out by opening the store and only browsing a few pages. It ate up 10mb in under 1min of browsing. I asked a buddy of mine who had the same phone if he could test it and he has the exact problem. We have 500mb limited plans, this is a huge problem, and now I'm afraid to use the play store.
Anybody else having this problem? What can we do it fix it?
I disable background data on it, until I need to use it. That way my data bundles don't get 'eaten up'.
Sent from my neighbours phone,
I did that already, and while it is a good idea, it is a pretty poor solution. I am sure many people are having this problem, and perhaps they found a solution of some sort.
I hope one of them will post the solution here, I need it too.

[Solved] Chromecast Disconnects

Wife and I both have Note 3's. My Note 3 makes it through about 1 or 2 songs and then disconnects from the Chromecast. This causes all music to stop playing and the Google Play Music app on the tv to return to the headphone start screen. I've compared all types of phone settings, wifi, etc between wife's phone and mine. I even did a factory reset on my phone, no change. My son's S3 has no issues, our Note 2's had no issues, only my N3.
Anyone else having these issues? More importantly know how to fix the Chromecast disconnect. Thx.

This may or may not work but in an old phone I had a similar issue with pandora. Hopefully this works but if you have an option for streaming for high quality, turn that on, then reset your phone right after and start the program and see if it works. Ib know it sounds completely illogical but it worked on that phone with pandora, maybe it will work with this

Using the program REGPON wifi keep alive, located in the Play Store, I'm now having disconnect free Chromecast playback. Appears it was an issue with the wifi going to sleep even though it was check marked to Always stay on in the advanced wifi settings.
Hope this helps someone else.

This helped my problem on the Nexus 7. It's such an odd thing that I need to use this though.
This problem is happening when I cast Netflix from Chrome on my laptop (Toshiba Satellite). Its incredibly annoying.

I've got a oneplus one running CM os 12. With Google play music this was the only solution that worked and I also had the wifi set to not sleep. Interesting, never saw any other signs of wifi going to sleep. It will be interesting to see if the battery usage is affected. I'm guessing it wont be.
Thanks a ton for saving the day. Really enjoying play music now.
