I have been using this for a while and now w/ the new radio needing a "primer program" this works great for me!
Now that we all have built in GPS, I would like to introduce you to what I use to start my GPS. I open Navizon, turn on my wifi, and pause till it is open. Then I open my mapping ap (I like Live Search).
Navizon gets started quickly with the cell tower and wifi access point triangulation, and then gets the gps chip going quickly; so live search is ready to go by the time I get in a destination.
Navizon:
http://www.navizon.com
Navizon is a wireless positioning system that works a little bit like a GPS, except it uses Cellular Towers and Wifi access points instead of satellites. In addition to being a wireless position system, Navizon offers features like the Directions, Buddy finder, Geotags and more...
This software relies on a community of users who contribute data to the system (WiFi and Cellular towers) when they have a GPS device. And the cool thing is that we can earn money doing it with the Navizon reward system:
http://www.navizon.com/navizon_rewards.asp
I'm already using it and you could make money too with it if you're interested. All you need is to install it on your phone and have Navizon connected to your GPS. Every Wifi access points that you pass, every cell tower that you log will mean money in your pocket.
So now that we have a phone that is compatible with Navizon, you should really check it out.
If you plan on registering, please do so by clicking on the link below:

That way, I can also earn some referral points if I'm the one who introduced you to the system ;-)
If you like the wifi positioning by itself - you can cash in your first $20 payout for the full version, after that it gets popped into your paypal account, and if you turn your friends onto it you can get a little extra too!
In fact, hey birthday boy, Mike (wideawake), why not put a link to this in the help ppcgeeks thread, I bet it would generate a bit of "mad money"!
UPDATE: This is no longer relevant - uncheck load at startup in settings...(edit - I do have one nitpick w/ this ap though; I have to go and delete the ap from the windows/startup folder all the time - I don't need it to start at boot for cryin' out loud! - eh I should make a mortscript to delete it at closing the ap or something..)

Anyone like this, hate this, already use it, I personaly realy like it. I had tried it over a year ago when I had a 6700 and no bluetooth, and didn't have good accuracy, but no programatic problems. Now, I use it everytime I go anywhere at all new, I'm kind of addicted!
Over 350 views, and no responces? Does everyone already use it?
I installed it and kept it running to see how long it would take to drain the battery. My battery went from 97% charged to a low battery warning in about 5.5 hours. That was with the screen turned off, too. The GPS, Wifi, and cellular radio were all enabled during this period.
This app (or, more accurately: the way it uses your hardware) sucks your battery dry, so be sure to have a charger handy.

5.5 hours? you are VERY lucky. it pulled my mogul from 90% to warning about about an hour.
JD
Krap Sakes, it's not for walkin around on a reg basis - the WiFi on the mogul will suck the battery dry quicker than a $20 ho when you give 'er a $50!
(think about it...)
I rarely use it except when I'm driving and plugged in. I might go ahead if I knew I was walking in a prime spot, but to walk around for 5+ hours Navizoning, I would want a car battery! Same as wardriving, it's on the heavier side of what our moguls can do, but it can, so we do!
If I was going to walk with it I might actually consider one of those "Solar Cell" hat things...
I've earned about $80 to my paypal so far just running this on my mogul since I first heard about it...
Code:
# mapped Points
Wifi discovered by you 8374 25122
Cell towers discovered by you 860 12900
Wifi already mapped 4615 4615
Cell towers already mapped 667 1334
Bonus points 0
Total: 43971
You have claimed 4 rewards
so i can verify they do pay off cuz my paypal now has balance!

I signed up under the post obove me, maybe this could become a pyramid scheme...
But after using for a day have found when with wifi, gps & evdo network with verizon the battery drain is crazy. I think the battery gauge even went down while plugged into my hadsfree kit in the car.
Try going into the wifi card settings (start/settings/connections/wireless lan/power settings tab) and set the slider to either the middle setting (what I use) or best battery. Then in the power settings of Navizon and check 'let Navizon manage power', then set the slider to the middle setting. For best power savings you could also set your backlight settings lower (I do this sometimes, not always).
That works pretty well for me, the car charger still makes the power bar go up!
Good luck, and post back your results...
I did both of those setting today and it worked good.
Did find one problem, i removed my handset from the car cradle to use outside the coar for a call that lasted about ten minutes then when i replaced the phone the charging light came on blinking not solid and the battery just kept dropping. After doing some reading found out that phone charging did thermal shutdown because of heat and would not charge battery untill it cooled down.
Seems the wifi, gps and phone call all at same time really start to heat things up.
Especially if you have it it the hot sun i.e. on your dash.
I try to make sure I don't have anything else open as well, the more open, the more battery used.
i installed this today and cant get the program to run without a fatal error
im running DCD 3.0.1 and everytime i try to start the service it crashes and will not give a detail description on the error as i have the free version
anyone else having this problem?

i just got my first reward today, used it to upgrade to the premium version for free. thankfully im on a campus that has a couple thousand routers, and no one else smart enough to use this program, so all are mine for the taking...
Aside from the money aspect, its just kinda fun and addicting, to walk around see how many u can get
ENJOY!!
after having so much trouble trying to get the program to run correctly and having major battery drain after installing the program i removed it and dont expect to be going back
I've had great results so far. Just one day's use and over 1000 points. I found that it seems to pick up more in residential areas.
Also for anyone thinking of signing up, share the love.

Must have just missed your post yesterday. Do you have .netcf 3.5 installed? did you soft reset after install before running it the first time? these are the most commeon reasons for errors. personally I would have tried a reinstall. However it's not going to be for everyone. hit me up if you want more help.

yes everything is installed correctly and i did a soft reset after the install.
when i try to start the service it comes up with:
"could not find file: "Program File\Navigon\BPDNaptree.dat"
i have ran the sync multiple times and i have uninstalled and reinstalled the program multiple times and still get the same error
So,
I'm really intrigued by the Nexus one, i've been researching this thing for a bit now.
But i still have one open question, i bought a Samsung Galaxy once, but i returned it, the operating temperature was too warm for my sweaty hands.
So how does the Nexus One do heat wise? Does it get warm at all? Or does it heat up quite a bit when let's say web surfing ( via WiFi, which leads my to my next point)
So, my next point is that i will use a prepaid SIM in this phone, i'll be moving back to germany in a year, so i don't have a contract here.
So is it advisable to have this phone without a data plan? Does it ruin the entire experience if i just use Wifi? Is it even possible to turn off Cellular DATA?
I hope to hear good answers, so i can convince myself to buy this shweet and unique phone ^^
nope mine never gets hot, maybe only when charging.
could you give a comparsion on how warm it gets?
i have a zune hd, and i absolutely love it (OLED + Tegra) and it stays fairly cool, i also had an iPod touch, those 2 never really got that warm, so you're saying i won't experience a sweaty hands syndrome with this phone? That's awesome.
And to my other question about turning off mobile data, is there a particular setting that says that?
Thanks in advance!!

-yes you can turn off cellular. but thats totaly with talk also
-I believe it will ruin the experience of the nexus without data *unless your near wifi mostly*
-but Wifi is AMAZING on this puppy. things load so freakin fast. i kick my best friends iphone 3gs when were surfing on the same router.
i am next to wifi 90% of the day, so it doesn't really matter
but there's no way to just disable DATA over EDGE or 3G?
I use an application called Quick Settings which offers an option to completely turn off mobile data. I'd struggle myself on wireless only though. Sometimes when you're out and about it's invaluable to be able to look something up or check Google Maps.
I use APNdroid works really good

Also, stock UI > Sense UI (FOR ME). I would rather get new ROM updates from Cyanogen etc rather than waiting months and months and months on end for HTC to update (example: what version are Heros running? )

makes sense, i had a thought about the delayed update cycle too, and since the Nexus is directly google's baby it'll always get them updates first i reckon.
If you don't have any APNs (access point names), then it won't be able to connect to any data services.
If you buy one without any contract it won't have any APN settings anyway, so as long as you don't add any, you'll be fine
One point though - I don't think wi-fi stay connected when the phone is sleeping (unlike GPRS/3G), so I'm not sure any background syncing will work very well.
I could be wrong about this, but when I have wi-fi on and sleep/switch off the screen it takes a few seconds to re-connect to wi-fi after I switch it back on again, so I assume it's off when sleeping. Maybe if you don't have any other data connection it will stay on?

not from any settings in the phone you would have to ask a developer to either make an application or figure it out yourself

Like acidblade said, APNdroid will turn off cellular data without interrupting phone/sms service. It also has an option for leaving MMS on if you want.
I'm on a prepaid SIM in Italy and it's an awesome app. It's free and has a widget for turning on/off data in case you are away from wifi and need momentary web access. All it does is add "apndroid" at the end of the APN name so that the phone can't connect to the web unless you want it to. Perfect for prepaid users like myself and the OP.

Bravo has less RAM than N1. Also you are forgetting that the N1 WILL be able to run Sense or even Espresso UI and FASTER than Bravo (beacuse of more RAM) via a custom ROM.

Sorry dude, but you're ranting more than explaining any of the issues.
What exactly are the problems?
ok dr.fixit
why does my web connection get lost every now and then , to the point i have to turn my data connection on and off.. and please dont tell me to disable HSPDA or whatever cuz i tried it and it still happens..
why does zooming in on websites using opera 9 make everything blurry( pics and text) ,please dont tell me to switch to opera 10 cuz that little zoom window that appears is terrible. and the auto resizing sucks.
why doesnt this phone download full emails ( with pics) ,i already set it to download full email , but then i have to manually download pics
i have bsb tweaks, regedit, cookies home tab, cleanram.. and this **** still freezes.
I can understand your annoyance, but talking sarcastically to people showing a wish to assist isn't going to encourage help from these forums.
Does the drop in connection happen when you are stationary (i.e. when you're sat at a desk in an office) or while you're travelling, or both?
Opera 9, are you zooming with pinch-to-zoom or double tapping? or both?
Do you have "Mobile View" ticked in the settings?
Have you got gmail set up as IMAP or POP3?

That's the problem.
Stevie has been bottle-feeding you for three years and now you are overwhelmed with the freedom a real phone gives you
like Skycamefalling stated you have had an iphone for 3 years, so the tweaking bit you have to get to grips with, email on the phone works great i have 4 accounts working on mine and 1 of them is push,
tbh some of the issues you list could be down to your provider as opposed to the phone itself.
i have had my HD2 since dec 24th and love it to bits. i do not have any of the probs you list but then i am in the uk with a different version of the phone and a different provider as well.

I can tell you that your 3g problems are probably because of T-Mobiles crappy 3g coverage. I can't get 3g inside any building at all in my area. T-Mobiles 1700 band doesn't penetrate through walls or objects as well as AT&Ts 850 3g band. I really miss AT&Ts 3g coverage... it worked everywhere for me.
For your freezing problems... do you remember to make sure you fully close any apps you aren't using with a task manager. If you have too many things running in the backround it can cause problems. Most people who are used to an iphone don't remember to do that.
skycamefalling ,,,,,that was funny.i have no problem tweaking internally. my iphone was tweaked beyond comprehension. you jester you!!

No, you don't. I have seen and experienced more problems with this phone and I'm an avid android user. I'm experiencing the same issues the poster is having as well, and I've experienced this with two different hd2's within the past couple weeks (buyers remorse is a godsend).
The phone may have the potential to rock face, but it's like my beloved Rx-7's... potential to kick a lot of ass but the reality is they're more problematic than they're worth. The phone has a lot of issues, you shouldn't HAVE to close down a single app in order for your phone to respond. Having the ability to do that is nice, but it shouldn't be a requirement especially if you're only running a couple apps like messages, music, opera and the phone itself.
I say if the person upset can take it back or sell it, do so. I am taking mine back if I don't see any improvements by this weekend.
Tweaking is fun when it functions; tweaking to get things to operate half right and it STILL doesn't even do that is beyond annoying.
Outta curiosity, could we take this phone to at&t and use it? (US side)
To put it another way, I feel as if i'm paying Tmobile/HTC/Windows Mobile to beta test their lack luster phone with zero software support and no forseeable end to the beta or a worthwhile product at the end of the cycle.

Does it drop the connection while surfing? If so, did the connection slow down/drop bars first?
Opera, Is it every page that goes fuzzy, does it do it on the mobile versions of the same sites? Do you get a checkerboard effect appear while zooming also?
Can't really help with the gmail issue as I only have hotmail on imap. I have seen a few posts mention that it doesn't download images unless requested. I must admit it does it randomly (although very rarely) on my POP accounts on mine.
I've not been able to track it down as to whether its due to closing the connection to the server prematurely, or whether its just having a funny 5.

I really don't understand why some people have all these problems with these phones, even after getting a replacement. I have had no issues whatsoever... I can run usually over 10 apps at a time with no lagging or freezing. It ran fine out of the box for me with no tweeks. I've installed and uninstalled many apps, including ones that were questionable to experiment and test out. I was actually surprised it didn't freeze up with what I threw at it. I've owned 8 other winmo devices and the HD2 has been the fastest, most stable one. So when I see people having problems with freezing, I have to figure you either have a faulty device or it's something the user has done (either installed something or using it in some way that causes it.). So saying that you have to tweak it to get it to work right doesn't apply to everyone or every HD2 and these issues seem to be for certain users or HD2s. It does seem that most of the people with these issues are people who have liitle or no experience with winmo, but I can't figure out how exactly someone would use it to cause these issues. Maybe there's a large number of defective units. idk.
Also, to use your Tmous HD2 on AT&T, you'll need to unlock it first. And you will only get edge speeds with AT&T... no 3g.
i got the atrix last week. and i was thinking of returning it cause i was having signal issues, wifi issues, adn it was jsut running crappy compared to my inspire...i read ALLOT this weekend on various sites and i must say after doing all the the stuff mentioned below this is new phone. i am so happy i spent some time on it and worked at it. This phone is the best i have owned and i have owened almost all android GSM phones along with balckberrys and iphones. I am running the Motorolla stock launcher and it is nice and fast..
ANyone having issues Please try this before returning
1. SBF to 1.2.6 THIS made the WORLD of diffrence. dont ask me how, but it did. Here is a link to the guide and files. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=991072
2. Root and install Titanium Pro(you must have PRO to freeze)
3. Freeze all Apps from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=972459 link. pay attention to the ones you freeze depending on what you will use.
4. My 3g/EDGE issues with the handoffs was solved by changing the UMTS settings to "2g only" and NOT selecting "automatic" for operator. More on that here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1011515 ...... i dont loose my signal at all now when it hands off.
**now i know some wont want to do this but i get crappy 3g where i am so i dont care not to have 3g**
5. for my WIFI issue (Wifi having trouble connecting after phone is woken up) i went in to WIFI Settings, then click the bottom left button, then advanced and disabled WIFI sleep. That did it for me.
This phone is still running blur - all the apps, widgets i froze and runs perfect. i am super happy. **UPDATE** Went home to test the 3g theory, and i always get H+ when i put my phone in the kitchen window. one bar. today, EDGE all the time i was home with full signal. so the 2g Toggle DOES work i guess.....
When I switched my phone providers I had to also swap phones because my old carrier was CDMA and the new one was UMTS. As a result I bought off a friend an HTC Dream G1 which he was running some previously beta ROM on it (I never mothered to check what it was but it was apparently a beta).A week after I got it we decided to upgrade it to a "newer custom ROM and so I was persuaded to reflash the phone with FroyoByLaszlo 2.6.34.8 (Mod version 5.2, Android ersion 2.2.1). An accidential softbrick (forgot to add the fonts) and another reload later I had it working and I went home that night and went to bed.
That was two months ago. To this day I regret this upgrade as I have had nothing but hell come from this phone in the form of so many bugs, it makes my middle class apartment look clean.
Notably annoying bugs include:
-Sluggish performance. (it does not take fifteen seconds for the camera to start, 45 seconds just to call someone, and other apps that worked fine previously just love to hang.)
-Unresponsive controls. (if you force close something because you think the app ahs hung, sometimes the phone will continue to register the button as pressed and continue to force close anything that gets in its way.)
-Phone drops data connection. (if you leave the phone alone, it will just drop its data link and you must cycle the radio on and off to get it back.)
-Phone roams when it loses its signal. (I go into and out of a tunnel and in the middle of downtown Vancouver I go from full signal with 3G to roaming and no data. Again, you have to cycle the radio to get everything back.)
-SD card will not auto-mount properly. (it says the card is damaged (it isn't) when you (or it) restart the phone and can only be cleared and accessed by unmounting, removing and inserting the card, then remounting.)
-Phone apparently has no memory. (I made sure 32mb was free onboard and there is 3 gigs still free on the SD card (and enough free RAM just in case) yet when you try to download an app or you try to update something (no matter what size, like say a 120k update), it will download but then fail to install because it cites insufficient memory. Rebooting will not clear the problem. It also worked fine for the first week then decided to do this.)
-Apps do not respond to events. (I have on particular app that notifies me of preset USGS earthquake alarms and it worked flawlessly on the old ROM. On the new one it worked for about a week, then while it still had all its settings and was able to display past events it decided it was NOT going to notify me about them when the phone received them.)
-Phone crashes like nobody's business. (I can be playing with an app or even sleeping when the phone decides to go TU and reboot because it crashed.)
I have not even done any advanced tweaks. All settings are essentially stock. I have not even changed the wallpaper yet.
The previous owner of the phone had OCD and it was NOT mishandled. It also worked flawlessly for the six months he owned it. The only likely culprit is this god awful ROM and it makes me want to punch babies.
No. Really. I'm willing to walk into VGH, enter the infant ward and just start punching little kids just to express my anger on just how miserable this has made me in the two months I have owned it.
When we flashed the phone the page we got the ROM from said this was a stable release. This is anything BUT stable. I can barely even use google on the thing because it takes forever to do anything and everything wants to update but you can't because it's straight-out retarded.
Did you upgrade to 1.33.0013d and completely format your phone partitions before upgrading? It is best to format partitions when switching roms.
I'll contact my friend who did it and see what he did.
I'm assuming if tthis was not done I could potentially ahve a dirty kernel?
FroyobyLazlo 5.2 is the final build of FBL. Your running a old version. The drops in data, and other things are based of a lack of Ram possibly. I know it seems unlogical, but its Device 0. The catalsyt to the Zombie hords. :3 It

Yeah then, I have to switch to something else.
In fact, the other day I added an additional problem. After a reboot the phone is now stuck in roaming mode. For the mercy of my phone bill I'm locked out of using data or even amking calls.
