Helium Backup Issues - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is anyone else having an issue using Helium Backup to transfer data to their new phone? I'm using a Mac and when I connect the Nexus to my computer I get the green checkmark, but my phone hangs on the screen asking to put the phone in PTP mode, despite the phone already being in PTP mode.
I didn't have this problem when backing up data from my old Nexus 6.

I am having the same issue. Any solution yet?

Me having the same issue as well...
And it's really bad, I was sure to be able to restore the backup from my MM Nexus 5... Both with Marshmallow, both with stock Android...
I contracted the Helium support but they didn't reply yet...
If someone find a solution or had news, please tell.

I just got my 6P and i'm having the exact same issue.
Did anyone succeeded in making it work on the new Nexus?

I have gotten this to work by setting starting the software on the phone and the PC and connecting the cable, then using the system settings to set the PTP mode. Sometimes it takes two or three tries.

so are there any other ideas on getting this to work? I'm running a Nexus 6P, I've tried connecting and switching to PTP mode, it verifies and says it's good to go, spends ~2 minutes performing Backup, then puts up the "Backup Error" screen.
I've made sure that my Desktop Password is blank, however when I try to run the backup it does complain about it since the device is encrypted, however it seems to auto-tab through and try to backup anyway.
I have set my encryption pin within the Helium Backup app as well, still can't get a backup to work.

same issue for me too

Nexus 6p - same problem. Usb debugging is activated, using PTP driver, Desktop app shows green check mark and good to go. Start the backup on the phone app and after about 2 minute pause - error backing up. Tried reloading the app, same issue. Not playing nice with Android 6 at all. Tried My Bakup (free version) and it worked fine.
Guess we'll have to wait for an updated Helium app.

Same problem. On my N6P I can't get Helium to activate using the Mac program. Helium on the phone asks me to switch to PTP, even if I'm already in PTP, and then Settings will crash when I tell it "yes" go to settings to do this.
Gotta have this fixed as Helium seems to be the only way to transfer my old T-Mobile VVM to my new phone. It worked from my N5 to my N6.

This worked perfect for me.
Launch Helium app on your phone but don't do anything else.
Launch Helium program on your computer.
Connect the cable to both.
And all worked ok after that.
It even backed up my T-Mobile Visual Voice Mail even though the author says it wouldn't.

I think i have another problem.. after it asks me to switch to PTP.. i tap OK.. then i get a message saying "settings has stopped working"!!
Then i do it all over again.. same result.

Just remove your lock screen security, after that everything will be working fine

I had the same issues as described until I tried the chrome app https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/helium-backup/gpglbgbpeobllokpmeagpoagjbfknanl?authuser=1 for some reason it made it recognize that it was connected

Under "Developer options" enable "USB debugging". After that again under "Developer options" there is another option called "Select USB Configuration". For this option select "Audio Source". That workaround just worked for me!

Same issue here, Helium on the phone asks me to switch to PTP, even though I already did so, and then settings will crash when I hit yes to change to PTP. No bueno.

Removed security lock, didn't work at first, then after a reboot it connected correctly and I'm now restoring some of my apps and data (some of them stated in helium that they could not be backed up for some reason).
Thanks!!!

Another user stock on switch to PTP when the phone is on PTP

I just struggled with this for 30 minutes trying everything suggested above. Finally I clicked the settings in the Helium app and set a encryption pin via the helium settings. This solved it and it worked instantly. It would appear that because the Nexus 6P is encrypted by default Google won't let Helium backup with out also setting a password.

Got the same problem. Judging from the error stack, I would say the app needs an update for newer Android versions. It tries to open usb setting, but their location changed with recent versions so the app is crashing.

Activesync 4.5 doesn't work anymore

Hi. I've had a really good search for info before posting and tried lots of things but I'm stumped!
I've got a Softbank X01HT (HTC Hermes 200). It used to work fine with AS4.2 and 4.5 but stopped working one day and hasn't worked since!
When I connect the phone via USB everything looks normal. I get bing-bong and bong-bing etc, I can see the phone is attached in device manager, the phone charges etc. etc. but AS won't connect to the phone. In AS connection setting it says USB is available etc. I have deselected advanced USB connection and tried "work"/"internet" etc.
I haven't done anything to the phone. No upgrading of ROMS or OS or anything. I even gave my laptop a first birthday!
I have a Dell Precision M60 running Win XP SP2 and a fresh installation.
I have deselected "do not allow exceptions" in Windows Firewall and AS has put exceptions for itself in there.
I am not running through a hub.
I'm hoping someone can help - maybe I missed something in all my searching for a solution.
Had something similar happen to me once. Resolved it by deleting the partnership on the pc from within active sync on pc (make sure phone isn't connected or active sync won't let you delete the partnership). Issue was with the partnership profile on the pc getting corrupted nothing to do with phone at all. Once partnership is deleted connect phone (make sure you have reset your phone settings that you have changed back to default) and set up a new partnership. Good luck and let us know if it works.
Cheers

Thanks for replying.
As mentioned, my laptop got a "first birthday" i.e. the HDD was wiped and the OS re-installed. There are therefore no pertnerships or remnants buried deep in the registry etc. to delete. In AS (with or without the phone connected) everything except for "connections settings" is greyed out.
Cheers

Do you by any chance have zone alarm running? If you do switch it off and see if it works. If you don't then switch off Windows Firewall and see if works. Post the results.

Whenever mine acts up I simply disconnect my phone, restarting my pc, restart my phone and is well. I dont have the problem often but it solves it for me
Active sync
I had a similar problem. Check out Settings/Connections USB to PC and uncheck "Enable advanced network functionality"
This worked for me.
May not be related but worth a try.

Cheers. When at work, Windows firewall is off. When at home it is on but exceptions are allowed and AS has put itself in the exceptions. Switching off the firewall completely is not an option as the admin has switched that function off (greyed out). This is no different to when it was all working so I'm not so sure it's that.
I don't have zone alarm. In fact I have re-installed very little since having reinstalled Windoze.

Had a similar problem.
Open task manager. Is RAPImgr.exe taking up all the processor time on a CPU (so will take 50% on a dual core machine, 100% on single core).
I had this issue with AS 4.5 when upgrading from the old machine (Wizard) to the new Hermes and basically had to reboot between connection attempts to get RAPIMgr to die. When I killed it manually, the computer rebooted anyway.
The problem with this seemed to be disconnecting it mid-sync and then connecting a new phone which then broke it. The way I solved it was to stop connecting the Wizard.....
Perhaps try removing the relationships on AS on the phone. I guess it might work....
Hi last suggestion I have - I know you mentioned your pc was wiped so there are no partnerships, however the first time you tried to connect your phone since then something might have gone wrong and a partnership might have started to be created but not yet completed. With your phone disconnected can you open active sync, click on "file" then on "delete mobile device" (if it allows you to - it might be greyed out) - See if that works and get back to us.
Cheers

HTC Sync 3.0 & Windows 7 - no device connected

I know that other people are having similar problems with Android phones, but I just got a Wildfire today and it doesn't get detected.
I have Windows 7 x86, HTC Sync 3.0.5422. I am running HTC Sync as administrator with disabled AV and Firewall. I am using the back USB ports. I don't see any other options in HTCSync than Help and About. HTC is appearing in Devices and Printers normally.
It also comes in Device Manager under
- Disk Drives as HTC Android Phone USB Devices
- portable Devices as D:\ (next free letter drive)
Anyone has any ideas?
Thanks
When you first connect your phone to the computer, make sure that you enabled "usb debugging". Once this is done, you should not have any more problems.
To activate usb debugging, just go settings -> applications > usb debugging.
Hope this helps.

I had the same problem on x64. Couldn't get it to work till I was so frustrated about it and gave up. I think there is a problem with the usb drivers.

Enabling USB debugging allows me to connect. But as soon as it looks like syncing, the wildfire comes up with "prepairing SD card" and it disconnects
Very frustraiting

Works fine for me on 7 x64.
I did install the drivers from the SD card earlier though for development.
I had similar problems - which all disappeared when I used a different usb port. The one's at the front of my PC just didn't work. Ones at the back worked fine.

I know it should work. but I can't find out what exactly is causing this behavior - and that sickens me Cause usually I get everything to work =]
I did uninstall everything that had to do with HTC. Sync App, Drivers, everything. Rebooted and tried from scratch.
I saw that Windows Update automatically downloads drivers for the Wildfire as soon as it detects it on USB. I had no chance to abort that so that I could install the Stock HTC drivers that came on the SD Card.
As soon as Windows said the device should be ready to use, I installed Sync again and tested if sync was working. Didn't work. Then I installed HTC drivers from SD Card. Tried if it works. Nothing. Rebooted. Tried Again. Nothing. USB Debugging on. Nothing. USB Debugging off. Nothing ... I don't know any further
Skye do you have installed the HBOOT driver from unrevoked along with the HTC drivers? Could it be possible that they both interfere somehow? Or is this not possible at all.
I don't use the HBOOT drivers since I don't have my device rooted.I can see that it could have an effect.
I'll check the device name, hardware id and driver version for the ADB tomorrow and we shall compare it with yours.
i had same problem, turned out it is firewall blocking (least for me), disabled security suite and all works fine. i had f-secure internet security
Plug in using rear USBs
Well, plugging in using the rear USBs worked for me. Slightly inconvenient. Maybe they're trying to sell more docks...
Change USB "Charge Only" to USB "HTC Sync"
I have a super simple solution to try that worked for me.
When getting the HTC Sync "no device connected" error message, you must change the phone's USB setting from "charge only" to "HTC Sync", if it's not already done.
I noticed that my "notifications panel" at the top of the screen said "Charge Only" next to a USB symbol.
To make this change on the T-Mobile MyTouch 3g Slide, I opened the notifications panel (with your finger, pull down the bar at the top of the screen). Then, I clicked on USB "Charge only" bullet and changed it to "HTC Sync". Voila, the next time I plugged in my phone, HTC Sync recognized it, the phone app of HTC Sync found the HTC Sync on my computer, and gave me options for syncing.
I didn't need to uninstall or reinstall HTC Sync, move drivers, use msconfig to prevent programs from starting up, etc.

I have the HTC Merge from U.S. Cellular. I had used HTC Sync without too many problems when I was on XP until the last update. That always connected but would not sync, giving me an error every time [1000 general error]. The fix was to re-install the version before, and don't upgrade even when you get a notice that an upgrade is available.
As soon as I moved to Windows 7, and used the same process, Sync on my PC would flash on, then show disconnected, and then minimize. The icon in the system tray showed a connection, and my phone shows a connection. But there is no way that I have found to get the main window open on the PC, and set the options for what I want to sync!
HTC has been no help at all.
Has anyone found a way to view the Sync software screen on the PC after moving to Windows 7... or 8?
Crossing my fingers - hoping there's a solution!

Joe,
I gave these a try, and I still have the same issue. HTC Sync loads for a second, then flashes "No device connected" and disappears. The icon in the system tray shows a connection, and I can tell the phone to sync, but after checking my calendar for a test appointment that I changed, nothing changed on the phone. Since HTC Sync won't open, I can't adjust the settings to make sure it is set up correctly.
Very frustrating! Wish they would update their software!

How do you disable USB automount?

In the past I could enable USB debug and my USB storage would not auto mount to the computer it was connected to. Now no mater what I try with the S5 it will not allow me to disable this automount behavior, even while on the lock screen. I find this to be a HUGE issue with security anyone who can grab my phone can access all the files on it very quickly.
Has anyone figured out how to disable this?
Sorry if this has been asked already, I did search.

First you need to enable developer options by going to settings>about phone and tapping on the build number about 7 times, a pop up will come saying they are enabled. Then go there and scroll down and you should see it, about the 5th option down

I know how useless charging from a computer is the real intention is to stop a random person from just hooking it up via usb and downloading all my files. When I connect I intend to use storage mounted to the host PC.
Deselecting does not work by the way either MTP or PTP has to be selected and if you try to uncheck it stays checked at least that is the behavior i am seeing.

It may or may not but previous android versions allowed this behavior on stock roms. Took a bit of messing around but you could get it to stop auto-mounting, usually by enabling debug mode in developer options, that doesn't seem to be the case anymore .

If the screen is locked you should not be able to see phone or SD storage. Try this.
- Unplug the phone from the PC
- Lock the screen
- Plug phone back into PC
You should see the PC recognize the device, but when you click into it, it should be empty until you unlock the phone.
If you unlock the phone while plugged in. It will remember this until unplugged and locked again.
As far as I'm concerned turning the only real way is to set Windows to stop auto play for the device. However this would have to be done on any PC it's connected to.

Dennis, you are half right. USB debugging is meant for file transferring (but on a deeper level). It is more of a dev. tool then setting for the average user. When USB Debugging is enabled Devs. use it for establishing a connection Between the Android SDK(Software Development Kit) with an Android Based Device

Hi. I have the same concern with my Android 7.
I used to own, years ago, and Android 2 device and once plugged in to a computer by USB, you needed to activate the data transfer manually on the screen, otherwise it was charge only.
I wish Android 7 would behave the same way. It is safer : you may charge your phone on any USB slot and use the phone at the same time without being worried that somebody could be downloading your files and installing a back door.

USB MTP/PTP Connection Problems to any computer.

Hello, I've had the V20 for a number of months now and love the phone, but I never tested out a data connection before, only to find out that when I use both the LG cable and a Anker USB3.0 cable, my phone is not able to connect to any computer. The system prompt to select the MTP or PTP connection appears, but after making a selection and the computer seeing the phone for a split second, the connection is lost and the USB prompt appears rapidly over and over again. I even went into developer options and set MTP connection always.
I tried a reboot, battery pull and capacitor discharge, and a full system restore. No fix. The only work around I have now is a samba server or moving files with the SD card manually.
Please, if you have any ideas? Does not work in Windows and Linux.
Thank you.
Have you installed LG bridge?

Yes, USB debugging works and I'm able to use ADB with my phone and both the Windows laptop and Linux Desktop. However, neither is able to reliably connect through the typical MTP and PTP methods. I finally got MTP to limitedly work with MTP when I use the LG supplied cable and ignore the USB connection prompt in Windows and Linux. I go straight to File Explorer and access the file directory of the phone. Every time I open a folder or access a file though, the phone rapidly pops up the USB connection message over and over while the file moves.
All third party cables and USB devices are not working other than just charging. In Linux, the error message in my logs is:
usbfs: process 20678 (mtp.so) did not claim interface 0 before use
reset high-speed USB device number 101 using xhci_hcd

Is this behaviour on accessing and copying? You can not copy a file from your Windows laptop to the phone?
Yes, I cannot open folder directories, nor move files from phone to computer or visa versa.
Also. Try to not let the phone screen turn off. Change display time to 15 minutes or something.. Change back when finished. GL

No change.
dbo989, did you resolve this issue? By any chance are you running avast mobile security? I was able to transfer files both ways via USB and had the pull down USB options without ever having to add USB debugging. Then I installed AVAST and USB has become charge only... none of the widely recommended solutions above will unlock USB. I see no apparent settings in AVAST so I will call them. If no resolution then I will trash Avast

No, I never could resolve it. I ended up using Samba to fileshare with home computer, but lost any OTG cable ability. Never used antivirus or security software with my phone.

Just fixed it... turned out to be the port on my PC, I switched ports and its back as it was, no need to enable dev mode or USB debug... its still slow connection... I have to look up Samba solution, never used it.
Thanks for sharing
I just experienced the same problem with the USB connection constantly cycling between being plugged in and not. Windows kept alternating between the device connected and disconnected system sounds. I unplugged the USB 3.0 to USB-C cable on both ends, unkinked and straightened it, and plugged the cable back into the PC and the phone. Hasn't made another peep for the last half hour and the phone is staying in USB file transfer mode. I wiggled the cable at the phone end and still no further disconnections. Maybe I didn't connect the cable securely at the PC end the first time.
This is the first time this has happened since I started setting up the phone this week, so I don't know what to make of it. Regardless, I need to order some more USB-A to USB-C cables since this is my only one.
USB File Transfer Issue - Resolved
Hi, I had the exact same issue with the computer not seeing the phone as far as files. I was still able to use ADB, Fastboot, etc, so I figure it was not a hardware problem. Tried two different computers as well. Every time I selected "File Transfer" in the USB settings, the phone would beep, and when connected to the computer, the computer made the usual chime. The phone would not show up in explorer still.
Previously this phone had been rooted, but I wanted to bring it back to stock. I had flashed the latest KDZ file. Then using ADB and Fastboot locked the bootloader. It seems that the USB issue happened after that. Here is what finally fixed it:
Turned on developer options the usual way (tapping build number in software info) and then turned off "Allow OEM Unlock." Then I turned off developer options. Still, no luck, so I then re-flashed the latest KDZ (H91820h) again, but this time with the bootloader locked.
After everything was done, I set the phone up again, and now file transfer works perfectly.
I did not want to chance locking the bootloader while the phone was still rooted. I learned the hard way about that, and nearly bricked the phone once before. Luckily I still had factory upload saved in the LAF partition.
Hope this helps someone out there.
Turns out it was not fixed permanently

After thinking it was in fact fixed, I rebooted the phone several times, turned off, then on, and all seemed well. Until the next morning. I turned it on, and the same issue happened again. No File Transfer mode to computer. ADB still worked. After being on for a while and getting warm, all of a sudden file transfer started working again. Rebooted, and turned on and off, and it continued to work. I figure its a bad part with a thermal issue somewhere so I put it in the freezer for 5 minutes. When booted up again, the same problem occurred until the phone warmed up. Weird? So I tried something completely different. I downgraded the phone to H91810p and tested again. It seemed to work fine. I put it in the freezer again, and the problem will not show itself. For whatever strange reason the problem appears to be heat related, and ONLY happens with the latest KDZ, Oreo 8.0 The only thing that I can theorize is that the SOC is bad, or there is a bad area of flash memory that is intermittent.
Does anyone have any clues? I am going to put it back in the freezer, go to work, and test again when I get home to confirm.

I need HELP, Samsung, Adb and a broken screen

Hello,
I'm trying to reach out here because I've been looking this up for the longest time and can't seem to find a solution ,
I have a Samsung galaxy S7 edge G935F, about a week ago the phone fell from 3rd floor and the screen is broken, it's still working and I see that the screen is still responsive but when I try to put in the pattern lock for some reason it doesn't work,
It was working just fine for the past couple of days but what I forgot is that I had the automatic reboot option enabled,
two days ago the phone reboots and I can't use my fingerprint, because after the reboot you need to enter the pattern before being able to use the fingerprint option,
my question is, can I get access to my phone still? I did recover some photos and videos but I wanna use the phone on pc using an app like Vysor,
I tried ADB but it doesn't recognize the phone when I do 'adb devices', even tho when I connect it on pc it shows up but it's empty when I open it, normally it would show the files and everything if I unlock it,
I wanna know if there's any way to install the app so I can control it on pc, I tried the official samsung sidesync app but again it needs to be on the phone too to work, can you please assist me in this, it's very important for me and I need some contacts ASAP
thank you :c

If you did not have USB debugging enabled in developer options, adb isn't going to work, you have to get it enabled first.
The fact that you can connect and see the storage doesn't mean anything, that only requires USB MTP connection, not adb functionality. They are two different kinds of connections requiring different drivers.
If you can get USB debugging enabled, then you have more than one option to get connected to recover your data and probably even remove the pattern/fingerprint.
