Can i use samsung pay with note 4 running note 5 port im wanting to use the NFC and how would i update the app bc im rooted it wont let me
I don't think so
While the note 4 has Nfc Sam pay is not Nfc based. Sam bought a company called loop pay and rebranded it, and it requires actual hard ware to shoot the mag strip info into the pos's swiper. It's actually an extremely intelligent system, and it does indeed work at pretty much all pos's that have just a swipe based transfer. I. E. Not gas pump style where you actually have to put the card in and the act of pulling it back out performs the info transfer.
But if you hadn't rooted your phone you could use android pay wich is Nfc based, but somthing to keep in mind should you go back stock. Hope that helps, though it is a bummer. I'd love to have it. On a side note you may be able to find a stand alone unit from loop before they were bought buy Sam. I have one and its fantastic.
Thats for the reply so im out of luck with android pay as well bc im rooted and if i do go stock will it work with the nox counter triped
Android Pay should still work, stock not rooted, even with Knox tripped. Android Pay is an app by Google and Knox is an app by Samsung, there should be no problems with Android Pay working just because Knox is tripped.
Samsung Pay also uses NFC. It was brought to the S6 Active which doesn't have the MST Loop. There is a slight possibility that Samsung will bring it to older devices. Having said that, it won't run on a rooted phone or with Knox tripped.
So - S7s are shipping and Christmas for many of us Android users is almost here. I've rooted every Android I've ever had, but I really am considering leaving my S7 Edge stock to use Samsung Pay. I figured I'd put a poll out there and kick off any discussion the pros and cons of rooting. Thoughts?
I'll probably root eventually. I'd like to see how it performs out of the box first, but I bank with a local credit union that will likely never get Samsung Pay (They only got Apple pay last year), so that's not an issue for me.
I got the Note 5 a month and a half ago when we moved to T-Mobile, and came from the Nexus 6. The Note 5 is the first phone I had not rooted in the first week. There was an app to freeze the bloat I did not without rooting and I love my Android Pay. Only thing I miss from rooting my phone now is adblock. However I can live with the ads to keep the Android Pay functions.
nvm
I rooted and loaded custom ROM on all my phones except the Note Edge. the support wasn't there for it and AT&T really locked things down. but honestly, I didn't really miss much... I don't think I'll be doing any of that. I also want to try samsung pay and kinda wish my Gear S had the NFC to make that even easier. Might get S2 Classic 4G just for that honestly.
Adguard my friend Google it. I love Samsung pay and with the s7/e performing like they do I certainly don't need root. Maybe someday if CM comes along I'll consider it but for now Adguard is enough for me.
So the question still there... Samsung pay going to work on rooted device or not. Anyone tried?
Samsung Pay is a banking app and here in the UK my banking app (Lloyds bank) doesn't work with my rooted Galaxy S5.
Is not really an option always use an app to freeze the bloat (have used something like that call "Hide my Root") as was saying kxhaz
There should be alternative for that...
I feel like this may have been asked multiple times, but maybe the S7 is finally the year KNOX might be needed for something. What apps are dependent on having KNOX untripped?
I know Samsung Pay requires KNOX, but Samsung Pay can be argued to be practically useless in 2015, 2016, and probably 2017 in like 99% of the US. But what else is KNOX necessary for in terms of functions of the phone and apps?
I have a SM-G935F coming in the mail later today and I'm reading up on Root and trying to decide if I should keep it clean, or go ahead and root so I can make some tweaks. I'd mostly like to know what I'm really losing in exchange for getting root access.
What is it good for? Absolutely nothing.

Samsung pay useless? What? I use it every single day... Do you even know how Samsung Pay works? It's not Apple pay which is actually 99% useless. Samsung pay can be used at magnetic strips, which means, its 99% USEFUL.

It's 99% useful if you happen to use one of the banks that work with it. That list is far from comprehensive.
Works with multiple credit cards I have, so I would call it useful too...

It currently only works (officially) in the US and South Korea, so it's 99% useless for people outside these countries.

Did you read what the OP says? He says "Of the US". I wasn't referring to the rest of the world. And if your bank isn't adopting it yet, get a card that does. There are some amazing cash rewards cards that are supported - I personally use the Citi Double Cash.
Anyway, back on topic. Knox is really aimed at enhancing security for business, especially businesses with a BYOD policy. It lets you, or your company, wall off the business usage (e.g., Outlook Exchange) from the personal apps on your phone. For the typical personal phone user, it doesn't really do much, but that's not really who it's aimed at. Knox had gotten Samsung's phones authorized for DOD and Intel community uses that were previously limited to Blackberry, or sometimes Blackberry and iPhone.*
*DOD and the Intel community have a love-hate relationship with the iPhone. They like the fact that it's more secured, in general, than Android has been, but hate that iOS is closed source, so they can't examine the code for security holes.

I know it uses older magnetic strips and not NFC, making it backwards compatible with older machines. But it still requires a data connection, can't be used when it's out of date, requiring an update (depending on where you are this is an issue, not to mention depending where you go, the terminal to pay might not be in front of you. You could be required to hand your phone off to someone else which I'm NOT okay with, and you gotta expect them to know what they're doing, which I'm not entirely sure they would seeing as Paying with your phone has existed for atleast 4 years, I live in Fort Worth Texas, and have seen only two in those 4 years in public attempt paying with their phones, one of which failed.
The way I see it, is if the technology isn't there yet to replace your actual wallet, then why wouldn't you just use your wallet? I've tried paying with my phone 3 times, and despite being successful at the attempts, I always thought I should have just used my card in the 1st place. If I'm not confident in my phone to replace my wallet, then I consider it useless.
Even if YOU consider it useless, tripping Knox, preventing your phone to use Samsung Pay could be an obstacle when you will try to sell your phone for the futur S8 Edge ...
Actually you don't need a data connection. I've used a phone without a sim card for Samsung pay. 5 purchases can be made before you have to connect to WiFi.
sorry, im just new to samsung. anyone can explain what does tripping knox means? I disabled this feature via package disabler pro since im not using samsung pay.
Thanks!

Rooting will change the value from 0x0 to 0x1 permanently.

Really: don't you have "Google"?

I noticed recently my citibank debit card was remmoved from Samsung Pay and no long able to be registered. After several calls to Samsung Pay and Citibank, I was informed that Citbank has done some recent upgrades to their systems and there is widespread issues with citibank cards failing to load onto samsung pay both automatically and manual entry. Is anyone else having issues with Samsung pay?
I have rooted my N920I, so I CANNOT use samsung pay, now just using the cba and nab pay with their apps..
i'm just bugged out that Samsung Pay is still not available for most international models. I avoided rooting just to keep from tripping KNOX. and now we're just a few months away from the N6. I wish Samsung kept it down to just a few models like it is with iPhones.

Hello XDA community. Just want to thank the providers, mods and users in advance for providing a cool forum to discuss related matters, as well as for any help provided to me in my struggle to get past this carrier locked bootloader. I find it very bothersome to not have access to my own phone by root. Especially now when my carrier (to be unnamed here) is forcing a sim card swap and re-branding of its company in my province in Canada under new agreement and terms in time with the passing of bill C-11.
Bill C-11: An Act to enact the Consumer Privacy Protection Act and the Personal Information and Data Protection Tribunal Act and to make related and consequential amendments to other Acts.
Given the political climate, i'm deciding to leave this carrier. I've a sat phone with a large bank of minutes which lacks the usefulness of a smart device. But will have to do if alternative carrier (volta wireless https://www.voltawireless.com/ ) is unable to provide functional alternative. I'm currently waiting for a sim card from Volta but have concerns about the ability to use their app on this phone with the current firmware installed. I've already discovered, after resisting 3 years of updates on this phone, when i allowed the phone to update in order to install gopro software ( it killed me to do it, but needed camera for an event and panicked), that certain radio show app would no longer access or buffer stream from source. So i have a feeling apps like Volta Wireless one are going to struggle as well. I've not tested with their sim card installed yet, but currently the Volta app is able to receive sms, but not send. Voice and data appear to be working though. So a third party voip app would likely function. (need to test) I've heard reports of others with this issue leading me to wonder if the One Ui or android version might be playing a hand?
Please bear with me. My experience with much of this technology in terms of unlocking or rooting is limited. I've jailbroke my Iphone4 a long time ago, my samsung S5 (also had a carrier locked bootloader that was able to circumvent) i rooted about 5 years ago with cyangenmod and then drove over it with my truck.
My current phone delema:
Samsung S8 sm-g950w / G950WVLS8CTI1 question? does the "S8" mean it has vers 8 bootloader?
One UI version 1.0 / Android ver 9
Currently i'm 100% missing the "OEM unlock" toggle. No amount of changing date and queuing the update will help as is a Canadian carrier with modded rom - G950WVLS8CTI1 i believe.
I could use some guidance from the more experienced than I. Even if to simply tell me there is not currently a viable option for this phone. Newb question- Can Odin flash a rom on the dl screen with a locked bootloader? I'm curious how a rom set by sammobile would work? - https://www.sammobile.com/samsung/galaxy-s8/firmware/SM-G950W/XAC/download/G950WVLS8CTI1/376914/ As i recall that was the solution to getting past this same issue with my old Samsung S5. I followed a guide on that and likely different circumstances on my S8 phone now.
Security is of concern so root modding with online service seems too sketchy to me, both in terms of the phone and the credit card required. I think sammobile would be pretty secure if solution was applying their rom if possible?
Once again, thanks in advance for any who read this far. I appreciate any advice or opinions on anything discussed. Let me know what your thoughts are on service like Volta. There is not unlimited data plans in my province / region. So if their service works then it will be very worth it. I just need a good rooted phone with secure platform to test their app on to know if it works with their carrier sim card installed. They do sell a phone but i'm wading in on a month to month to test first. This service is more or less in beta in my region and they are ruffling feathers (based on bot messaging on youtube results). I'll report my findings here.
