[Q] battery , NFC - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all.
Bare with me, a worried friend of mine apparently seen some YouTube video that discussed privacy issues.
He went ahead and peeled out a piece of electronics from his Note 4 battery, that to me looks like it could be part of/or the NFC sensor in whole.
Does anyone here know whether that is the NFC sensor or part of it? Or else what is it?
Thanks

Of course its for NFC to work. If ur friend concern about privacy. Just turn the NFC off. If he/she still concern if apps do over ride that. Just. Remove the nfc permissions SYSTEMWIDE. so no app can see if ur device have nfc

Yeah OK! Thought so ))
Thanks for confirming ?

Recommendation's for ARIA repair's

I recently sent my daughters ARIA in for a screen replacement. The repair shop was in Texas and did a good replacement (of the screen) but messed up the phone. Sense we have gotten the phone back the proximity sensor only works in extremely bright light (the repair shop says it was faulty when it came into their shop and that I would have to pay to have it repaired). At times it won't come back on unless the battery is removed. I have been reading that the prox sensor is a somewhat sensitive item with HTC's. It would appear this is a common problem after repair, with many HTC models. Does anybody have steps on how to rectify this problem or does anybody recommend a repair service that is know to be able to fix this issue?
That sucks that they are not taking responsibility for the problem, especially since it is actually a pretty common issue for the proximity sensor to stop working properly after replacing the digitizer. I doubt the sensor itself is damaged. Most likely the problem is that they didn't get everything lined up exactly right when they put the new digitizer on.
If I were you, I'd probably try to force their hand and make them fix it, but if you can't get them to do it without having to pay for it, then instead you might consider disabling the proximity sensor on the phone. A less drastic thing you can do is to set the phone so that the proximity sensor is only used when the phone is held vertically (i.e. up to your ear) and not horizontally (like when you're holding and looking at the screen). This is possible with the CM6/CM7 ROMs but I don't know if it is in the Sense ROMs.
Is your phone rooted? If not, are you willing to root it for this purpose?

Agreed what i did, because of there lack of offering to fix there problem, was put a claim in through paypa.l Paypal then, made them refund my payment. So having them fix it now, is out of the question!

Well yes and no, with the problems involved, I needed to purchase another one for my daughter so I am trying to fix this one to resell it
If I'm not mistaken there was a post up a while back where someone posted the htc authorized repair centers list you could try searching around for that I can't tell you what it would cost but it's worth a try.

Oh, yeah. You can take the digitizer off yourself and probably make sure everything is lined up properly, put it back on, and see if it works. But some people aren't comfortable doing this because it can be pretty tough to not leave fingerprints or dust underneath, etc. You can also just try taking it to another repair center and see if they can do it. It wouldn't require buying any new parts (since you already have a replacement digitizer) so it might not be too expensive to do.
Check some of the other threads in this forum -- I'm pretty sure there are a few that talk about how to remove and replace the digitizer. You might look at those to see if you think it's something you trust yourself to do.

FP scanner replacement..

My FP scanner stopped working recently...figured it was software related so i went ahead and wiped the stats..restarted, installed new custom rom...no cigar.
I have dropped my phone in water so im assuming its water damage.
Anyone got any ideas where i can get a replacement and get it fixed?
Thanks!
Same here, I can't find a solution at all. Flashing new roms dont fix it neither does wiping data

If water has affected the hardware, i doubt that you can ever fix this problem( if i were you, i would dismantle the phone and try and clean-and completely dry any water off it- the FP scanner and see if it works....but i would not advise you to do such a thing if you are not comfortable with it).
If, however it's a software issue, Flashing a new ROM would have fixed this problem.
The good news here though is that you can use the traditional lock, which many Atrix users prefer over the FP scanner.
another option is too look for a bricked phone or one with a cracked screen for parts to replace the FP scanner.
funny thing about water damage....i dropped it in may...literally 3 months ago..and now its causing an issue...guess i have to live with no FP scanner..

Just got a replacement from them for about $30 with the back as well for good measure. Friend from the US shipped it up here to save.
my old one actually does work haven't determined why my sensor gives me issues (off balance so it records swipes that aren't happening - not sure what the cause is cause it just goes away after some adjustment). the point being you are in toronto so you can have mine for $10 and i would install it as well.

you might not need both, but to be safe spend the extra $5. I haven't used the one I bought since it appears to be working fine.
This phone is very easy to torn apart.
yeah its actually one of the easiest out there
http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Motorola-Atrix-4G-Teardown/4964/1
you won't have to go beyond step 6 for this repair.
There is an onlilne outfit that supplies replacement parts for the Atrix, but doing so is not for the faint of heart.. The site is located at www.repairsuniverse.com
I considered going through them to replace my glass when it lost a battle with gravity and a concrete slab, and noticed at the time, they have just about any part that you could need, including the board that contains the FP scanner.

The sticker like cover of my scanner is peeling away. Is this the same as the cover that they have for sale?
you mean the black put your finger against? the cover is actually underneath that.

I bought it before I saw your post. You are right. The cover actually rests underneath the FP scanner itself.
In stead of buying the entire scanner, what I did was super glue the sticker back down. It's not exactly pretty, but the scanner still works flawlessly.

Possible solution to GPS problem on Nexus S

Hi,
i've tried just about anything to improve GPS singal on my Nexus S, i was so desperate i even thinked about selling it. But by accident i've found something interesting.
When you remove battery cover signal from GPS is really good, usable even indoors 1-2 meters from window. When you put cover back - it suddenly drops. Here's the best part - when i use different cover directly on the back of the phone, WITHOUT original battery cover (i have thick back case which you put on battery cover, anti scratch thing) signal was just as fine as without any cover!
Then i tried covering back of the phone with a case from another phone (Galaxy S) and signal was fine.
So the culprit is NFC spiral which is sticked to the battery cover. I'd like to take it off, but im not sure if it is possible to stcik it back in case of RMA or something.
I'd like you to try this simple experiment and tell me if your phones suffer from the same thing.
Thanks
hmm interesting
Lol wow with cover on I get 2-3 .. without cover 3-4.5 ... lol

What about turning NFC off?
Today i took off NFC antenna and it didn't work, which is strange. Now the culprit is whole battery cover. As i said i tried different cases and GPS was working fine with them.
Hello,
in our german community we discuss this problem, too. The Problem isn't the NFC antenna, it's the backcover! Some user tried with another cover from ebay: http://www.ebay.de/itm/250846706756?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 and this seems to work better!

Yup, that exactly what i considered. It's really funny, because original battery cover is making GPS works like s**t.
If that cover form ebay is really working i might consider buying it, i'll try to read original thread, thanks.
Have you tried that cover? My German isn't that great and neither is google translate. But from what i read this is really working, but i don't know how well.
im guessing NFC wont work without the stock battery cover
when did this GPS problem started?
it must be new...

Hey guys
I have my Nexus S (Blandroid + Trinity T144) tested just now, and now I only realize the GPS unit is on the right side of the phone.
Take off your cover, you should see a black, duct-tape like module pasted on almost 3/4 of the right side of Nexus S (the side where power button is located). That should be the GPS unit.
Tested with cover on, landscape with right side of the phone pointed upwards, I gained a score of 40~41 in one or two of the satellite in my view (GPS Test by Chartcross Ltd). When I test it with cover off, I gained a score of 45~47 in a few of the satellite.
Conclusion is, if you need a better GPS signal, you will need to hold it landscape with camera pointing to the left. Portrait mode will not works too well I guess. I wonder how Apple products can gain locks near instantly.
that's what i always do when i want to use GPS for navigation, pull off the battery cover.
it's almost impossible to get a fix with the battery cover on.
Humm I really wanted to delete this post but there isn't an option
Wow, i tried to get gps fix in my home without cover and it work!

I9500 Screen flickering (Imp.)

Hi guys,
I have a galaxy S4 I9500 version and I have observed a problem with it. I was sharing media with my friend's Xperia Z via NFC, while doing that, my phones' screen started flickering highlighting clock at the top portion.
Later I turned off both mobiles' NFC and taken both mobiles close and guess what my phones' screen flickered again.
I checked it with my old Galaxy S I9000 which doesn't even has NFC, again S4s' screen flickered.
Then I went to service center to show this issue, as they were not having any other S4 there to crosscheck problem, they asked me to visit a Samsung mobile shop. There I checked it with three S4s' which were on display and I found that problem was there with each and every S4.
So guys can you check your phones' for this issue and will it cause any problem to phone as the time passes??
similar type of problem

But I think it could turn into an issue because earlier my phones' screen was flickering and waking up automatically highlighting clock just like shown in that video.
I submitted my phone to them and they have replaced display with new one. Now it is not flickering automatically but it does while holding devices side by side as that sensor gets triggered by any magnet. So there is a possibility that the sensor could get permanently affected by a strong magnetic field and triggers the screen to wake up automatically.

Yesterday I tried something with my s4..
I disabled samsung link, clock digital(both of em), watch on, and dropbox.
The problem of flickering and clock appearing on top was GONE!! until......
I turned on the data network and found it coming back again...
I figured that it happened to me since i updated it to UBMG1 Indian firmware from BMEA
So i am now rolling back to the latter and sammobile here i come
Even i have also tried a lot of things... but problem was still there.... i think it messes with hardware and there is only one solution and tht is to replace the display with new one... if you find sonething to sortout this issue without replacing any hardware part...pls post it here....

I got my screen replaced but in vain.. I think using the S view cover will help because the flickering is caused by s view initiation (black screen with clock) which is initiated by a magnetic sensor..
Buy unfortunately the s- view cover is costly and so I cannot buy it at the moment .
A possible solution is to turn the s-view service off to stop the flickering issue..
If any developer on the site could help us out..

- Actually am using the S-View Cover. But with no use, when its out of S-View cover it behaves erratic by switching to S-View display automatically.
-Yes you are right it can be a software problem ,but take my words, i used a S4 which i bought on launch date in India, i used it for 3 months, then i gave it to my cousin, and bought another new one - this is the one which is showing up this S-View Issue,
the old one which i had was a GEM, not even once i had this problem of S-View with it, both where of same SW revision level, hence there is something to do with the hardware.
am just waiting for the October 4.3 update, if this is not solved in that SW by any means, then am gonna **** on every Samsung technician in the service center, they don't even know the difference between Hall sensor and proximity sensor!!!! , for making them understand the problem in our phone itself is painstaking..
in between is there any change to bring this issue to Samsung's eye.!?

That's not a issue. It's s-view feature in phone. If your phone get close to any magnet/magnetic source then it will activate s-view screen.
A lot of devices like iPad and Nexus 7 have a small magnet in them to provide support for cover/accessories. If your S4 get close enough to that magnet on other device it will activate s-view screen.
I dont know exactly if your other phone that you are trying NFC with, has a magnet. but there should be.

I know that it is a feature but it comes just in between typing process or running through the temple (temple run) and it disturbs a lot so I thought of using the s- view cover so it will restrict the feature to only when needed out initiated by closing the cover instead of coming every time in between activity..

Smart Pay stopped working

Hi All,
Just wondering if the inability to use smart pay on my Pixel 4 coincided with the swollen battery and its subsequent replacement. Has any one else experienced this and/or have a fix for it? Using smart pay or Google Wallet hasn't worked for about 2 years and it just dawned on me that this was about the time I replaced my battery. There is only one ribbon connector on the battery that I recall, and I know this was installed right. The phone has been working fine, other than no ability to use my phone to make smart payments any more. It used to work just fine on this same phone once upon a time. It is definitely not an issue with my bank(s) or cards, and Google support has no answers. The prerequisites for enabling Google Wallet and setting up tap to pay show checks across the board. Any assistance would really be appreciated! Many thanks in advance

Can you provide more details? Does Wallet specifically say you can't use tap to pay, or do you mean NFC readers don't read your phone?
It's entirely possible that a swollen battery could damage or break the connections of the NFC coil antenna in the rear cover.

I'm not sure about any other NFC capability. I don't use this function typically except for Google Pay, when that worked. There are no error msgs or any kind of response from the phone at all. It simply doesn't read or respond to any smart pay terminal. The defective battery was swollen enough to lift the cover off the phone. I simply gently peeled the cover off and replaced that battery with a new one. I didn't notice any kind of device, coil or connection on the cover, but then I wasn't looking for one either. I simply replaced the cover, same adhesive and all right back over the new battery.

lol. Ok. I'm sure I could pry the battery cover off easy enough, but is a 'borked' antenna repairable? Do love that term new addition to my lexicon.

You can blame my wife, she likes to use weird terms like "motorpickle", "hecalopter", etc
Most likely not repairable, you'll have to replace it. I think it's integral with the rear cover.

Hahaha. Well borked takes the prize in my book. So you reckon a new cover then, not a new battery. I'll seek one out and code this as 'mission unbork'.
Thanks a bunch for your feedback!
