Ok, so i picked up the Nexus S early today, and well I'm in LOVE with the dam phone. BUT i've been through 2 Nexus S's already: 1 because of a dead pixel right dead center of the screen, and the other because of real bad touch screen issues. The touch screen works, but it would become unresponsive frequently and randomly. It works fine then randomly stops responding to input. Took it back and got another 1; same touchscreen issues however not half as bad as the second nexus but still there. I didn't bother replacing for another as the store was about to close and didn't wanna bother but I will go back on sunday if the issues don't go away. Pressing the hardware keys seems to always fix the stalling issue so maybe it's software? idk but it's VERY annoying -_- Has anyone on here experienced these unfortunate issues?? Sound off below!
How did you even get a replacement one? I stood in line, was the fourth person at my best buy and almost didn't get one. I was the last person. They had a total of 4 phones. Every BB in my area for that matter (orange county, ca). I have a ring shaped "watermark" in my screen and I need to get it replaced. Other than that I love this thing. The plastic is not as scratch prone as the vibrant by the way. Also, crazy that this phone was literally manufactured one week ago and got shipped to best buy. That's a crazy turn over time. No wonder they only had 4 at launch.
My screen seems to sometimes not respond very well either, but it doesnt bother me enoigh to exchange.

You can still get replacements. Just go back. Best Buy does 30 day returns/exchanges. It's free if it's defective.

Or if you got the Black Tie protection you can go in after 30 days, plus it covers accidental handling damage. SOLD.
Is the unresponsiveness caused by lag, like, if you press an icon, does it launch moments later? Because this is a problem that plagues the Vibrant. Gingerbread not living up to what it says it is?
Not sure which would be worse... an issue with Gingerbread lag or with the touch screen not registering.

BB's that don't normally carry and sell Tmobile are limited to 4 phones (my understanding) BB's like the one I went to in my area which sell tmobile had about 80 in stock which they didn't even sell thru half my guess. I was real cool with the staff they just exchanged no problem

NO this isn't lag in gingerbread lol.. This phone FLIESSSS out of the box. its the touchscreen. It becomes unresponsive when i tap anything or swipe. I barely have that issue in this phone than on the last one, but when it happens it's extremely annoying.
same issue here. i can't even unlock the screen now.
My NS is easily the most responsive Android phone I've ever used. Sucks you guys got duds. Luckily if something happens, apparently no one bought them here...
This is also sometimes happen on my HTC Desire. If it does not happen so often, then I think it is OK.
I also found that our finger might contribute with this problem. Too dry or too cold, for example. When that happen, I rub my finger and it works.

well, being as this never happened to me on either of the 2 vibrants and nexus one I owned prior to this phone, it tends to really bug the hell out of me.
Extremely responsive here. As responsive as my Vibrant & G2, if not better.
My fingers are perpetually cold, and I'm fine. Lemme walk outside, its below zero here. Update in a minute.

Screen actually feels more responsive, but that might be attributable to the fact that I cant actually feel my fingers.

I will do that. Early Incredibles and Evos had screen issues where they didnt respond without being "grounded." Quotes because a software update fixed it.
I'm on a couch right now if it matters.

Yeah I'm huddling in a corner against the brutal MN cold...o wait....no Im watchin King of the Hill in my hot as hell (damn GF) house. My NS works just fine grounded or not. Responsive as hell.
the issue seems to happen very very little now. I might just keep it. If by sunday it doesn't continue i won't bother takin it back. But man, the last phone I had was unbearable. Literally happened every minute
I dropped my phone to ****ty water where it stayed for 5 hours... after that it went to police station where it was 2 days wet in a minigrip bag. After that i washed my phone, blowed it dry with hair dryer. For few weeks my vibration did not work but starded working. Second problem was GPS that did not work. But today it started working. Just wanted to share this info with you. Great phone.
Lucky man my luck it would all be stuff
I can't really agree:
I got in a really terrible rain with my X5 in my trouser pocket, I got soaked. Back in the car I took the battery out of the phone and dried it as best as I could.
At home I removed the SIM card and the SD card and let the phone dry for a week.
It's been two weeks now, the phone starts up, but you can't slide the unlock slider all the way to the right - it looks like the touchscreen isn't working in the rightmost 1 or 1,5 cm of the screen.
Also you can still see a few faint stains under the touchscreen.
I hope I will not have to test it but it is nice to know that a few drops will not harm it..
By the way (excuse me if I'm hijacking the thread) are those screen protectors that use a liquid "solution" in order to apply safe (enter the phone throught the speaker mic etc)?

U8800's 720p s_cks. don't even think about it.
It's definitely a great phone. I've only had one problem with it. The voice that people hear when I call them are always fuzzy, and the volume is very low too. I don't know how exactly to describe this, it's just that whenever I call people, no matter how slowly and clearly I speak, the sound they hear are fuzzy, to a point that it's hard to understand what I'm saying, especially when there's even a tiny bit of background noise. I've been having this problem ever since I got this phone (almost a year now) and finally I decided to post here and see if it's just me that I got a unit with a defective microphone, or anybody else feels the same?
some people has reported same issue to me. it works sometimes fine, sometimes not. It is their problem, I´ll definitely not change phone
Look very closely on the bottom left of the phone in portrait (by the 'home' button)... there's a small hole - that's where your mic is. Try some canned air to blow out any dust or debris that might be stuck in it.
I'd say there's about a 90% chance that's your problem.... with a simple fix!
Same problem here. 1 year old white best buy streak. Fuzzy microphone since day 1.

hi there,, i also have the same problem,, i just bought a used streak 5 few days. ago,, great phone. i flashed to dsc rom right when i received the phone,,i didnt test the mic on the original rom,,everyone were complaining about the voice quality,,first i was thinking its the mic gain issue from the custom,,as i was from htc hd2 which was having this issue sometime ago,, so i tried to tweak streak 5 without success,,yesterday suddenly something crossed my mind,, it could becoz the phone is longer and the mic is farer from our mouth that make the voice fuzzy, so i tried to tilt the phone higher to almost horizontal when i m answering ohone meaning that the mic is closer to my mouth,, btw i m using left hand,, or u can use right hand so u dont have to tilt so high,,, my problem totally gone,,and people said the voice is crisp and loud,,, hope it help! cheers.
I have the same problem as well, at first I thought it was the other persons phone because only one persona said it to me. But then I started asking people and more people started to agree...
Headset might be an answer as well..Wait no..the Samsung Note will be the answer ;p
I've got similar problems since running on Gingerstreak. It's quite funny, because when people that don't really know me are calling, they always think I'm a woman because, as they said, of my "soft" voice
This only happens on my streak and not on my other phone(s) and if I'm remembering it right, it started around the time I was flashing Gingerstreak.
I didnt test my streak when i got it with froyo, i flashed to dsc directly, so i couldnt make sure was the mic ok under froyo,, but changing the position of holding the phone during answer call do solve my problem, but i still finding better solution,,,thanks
I dont speak to anyone so i dont have that problem....
Hi guys,
I'm thinking of returning my nexus 4 because I'm not happy with it.
By far the biggest problem I have with it is the fact that the microphone is very poorly positioned. Almost every person i talked to told me at one point that they can't hear me properly so i have to hold the phone in a very unusual way for me.
Another problem is the speaker positioning. If the phone is sitting on the couch or bed, i won't be able to hear it if it rings because the speaker is completely covered so no sound gets through.
Another problem i have is the fact that because of its back, you can't really do anything with it using one hand because it will slide all over the place.
Lastly, for the hardware that it has it's unacceptable for the messaging /phone app to take 1-2 seconds to load in my opinion.
What are your thoughts on this?
no issues here. find another phone that you are happy with.

1. Microphone problem - Never had this issue. Sounds like a defect in yours.
2. Rear speaker - This happens on a lot of phones with rear speakers. If you're setting it on a soft surface, why not turn it over?
3. Messaging app - Every time you load the messaging app it has to load all of your messages. Try deleting some once in a while. You don't need 10,000 text messages. The R/W speed on RAM is only so fast.
Bottom line, if you don't like it, get another phone. The vast majority of the rest of us think this phone is the best thing since boobs. Well, maybe not boobs, but it's pretty great. The beauty of Android is choice. Exercise your freedom.
its strange that i seem to be the only one with the microphone problem, that's why i came here, to get some feedback, thank you for that, i will talk to my provider about this issue
in the meantime any other feedback is greatly apreciated

1. Agree with the others, it sounds like you have a microphone defect. I find that it's pretty common amongst many phones to have some units that just have defective mics.
2. It's definitely a problem, more so on a hard surface like a desk (I guess the newer N4 revisions sorta addressed this) than soft surfaces as most phones have speakers on the back and it's always going to be hard to hear when its on something soft
3. Different hands I suppose, I have no trouble BUT I did find it slightly easier to grasp with a sticky-rear glass protector on it (I had the xtremeguard one on for awhile).
4. Sounds like you have too many SMS messages on there. If you'd like to keep a backup to be able to call upon them long term you should use https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zegoggles.smssync. It syncs to your gmail so you can just search keywords within any Gmail search box.

thank you for your opinion
1. i suspect it was the way my carrier, the 4.3 update fixed it
2. i believe its because it's not rounded on the edges so the speaker is perfectly covered, i didn't have this problem with my nexus s for instance
3. ...
4. i rarely have any sms message, i limit all threads to max 20
anyway, i'm quite happy with it now, good to know that the microphone problem is gone
Hi!
I'm sorry if this is really long and confusing, I just want to try and explain as best as I can. If anyone is experiencing similar issues or just have some input I would love to hear it.
I bought a G2 (International version) about a week ago and have some issues with noises being heard from the call speaker (can be heard on the top backside also) even when not in a call and the screen being off.
I've read a bunch of posts about people complaining about the sound quality during calls, I would say mine was not horrible but not great either. I don't make a whole lot of calls on my phone so I didn't really notice it at first, until a couple of nights ago when I kept hearing this weird high pitched noise that I couldn't figure out where it came from. I don't have super hearing or anything, but I do hear the noise some chargers sometimes make when they're plugged into an outlet, highly annoying. Picked up my phone (from about 1 meter away) and that's where the noise was coming from.
I first thought it was the actual speaker making the noise but the noise is the same on the backside of the phone around the camera area.
There's the high pitched sound, some faint hissing, some dial-up modem like sounds and a lot of click click click..cliiiick's.
I do have pretty weird cell reception here, in one place it can be full and if I move it 1 cm it drops to 1 bar and so on.
I also noticed the phone got very hot up top. I wasn't doing all that much on the phone, had the browser open, played candy crush and wordfeud for like 5 minutes, checked my email.. normal stuff. Got a phonecall and when I put the phone against my ear it was really uncomfortably hot. Not burning hot or anything but definitely not something I want to speak in for more than 5 seconds. I checked the battery temp and it said 36 C, but the top of the phone was wayy hotter than the bottom part. This was at night so screen brightness was set to 0.
I let it cool down and ran Antutu just to see how hot it would go to, it peaked at 47 C and again the top part of phone was a lot hotter than the bottom part. The sound can be heard when it's quiet during the day too. I tried a factory reset but the sound was still there.
I took it back to the store and wondered if I got a defect phone or something. The guy at the store pretty much tried to brush me off. He did try to reproduce the problem and took the phone back behind but said he couldn't hear it in a "soundproof" room.
His colleague said "well phones do get hot when playing games". But really, shouldn't the G2 be able to handle the same things I normally did on my oold phone (HTC Incredible S) with no issues at all?
The sound can not be heard from any other phone I've tried to hear it from (my old phone, various Galaxy S3's and 4's, iPhones, Nexus 4 or the Galaxy Trend plus I bought so I would have a phone while the G2 is on service).
Those of you who have issues with crappy signal/reception and have normal hearing; can any of you hear it making sounds even while the screen is off?
If you made it all the way through that; thanks for taking the time to read! Any input you have would be greatly appreciated as it's not so much fun to feel like a annoying nagging customer when raising the issues at the store. I think the phone is fantastic, save for those issues!
Return it for replacement. Definitely not normal. Especially that hot. This phone stays cooler than my Spectrum. I get no sound static or audible noise less I'm on call, ect. Sounds like voltage leak, and into the speakers. Never uncomfortable at ear after an hour of games. Demand a replacement.

I already made a thread about the noise. The last lg phones have it. All nexus 4... you can check the threads...
And also this one. Once heard cannot be unheard.
Some ppl do not hear it. Some ppl do not wanna hear it.
What I read from N4 the intensity of the noise can differ...But am not sure about that. Mine n4 from us had it. And a brand new that a friend bought few week back from eu the same...
But a replacement won't do a thing. No one said oh, New device fixed it. Max they did. Oh, it's better. They also said that the issue can become worse in time.
It's just the quality control sucks in the dept from lg...
Anyway. When you exchange it. Let me know if the new device is better.

I was expecting the store to replace it with a new one on the spot, it was only a week old. But since they couldn't "reproduce" the problem they had to send it to the service center. It's nice to know that at least I'm not being super annoying and complaining about things that are "normal". I did wonder why no one complained about the top part getting hot. I have hats, don't need an ear-warmer!
Thanks!

I did search for similar threads but found nothing that matched my issues with noises during idle.
I am soo glad to hear that I'm not the only one with the issue, or that I'm imagining things! I don't have much hope of the new one being better, which I told them at the store. If it persists with the new one I'm returning it. I was contemplating getting the Nexus 5 instead of the G2. I didn't notice the sound on the Nexus 4, but maybe it was fainter than on the G2. So does the Nexus 5 also have this issue?
If it gets worse with time I'll probably end up getting annoyed at some point.
I'll let you know if the new one is better. but that won't happen for at least 3 weeks. I'm guessing a month and a half with it being xmas and all that.

Search in the N4 threads for static noise.
Btw, sometimes it's harder to hear, depends on the environment.
I bet N5 has the same issue...
As said, many do not wanna hear it.... And some even can't (doesn't mean it's not there...)
Btw I am fighting with myself too. If I should claim warranty or let it be... But sometimes it's pretty annoying. Mostly in calls in the silent periods. And sometimes I do not perceive it.
I got the g2 in hope that the n4 bug will be fixed.... One thing though in N4 it was worse.
Edit: some theory I remember. Said to have something to do with the data transfer. So in N4 they made "fixes" with tasker for calls with data WiFi Off during call and on after etc.
Btw if you really can hear from that far you really can have good hearing or really defect device... I can hear mine only ear next to it. Same as N4

Oh interesting, found lots of posts on the N4 board.. guess I didn't use the magic combo of words to get any relevant hits when I searched before I posted.
Yeah, the guy at the store definitely didn't even want to hear it. It's also hard to prove the sound is actually there. I mean how do I prove that I can actually hear the noise? I dearly would love to be able to keep this phone and live with the noise, but not combined with the top part acting like a stove. If I can't convince the store guys that there is something wrong with it and LG won't hear of it I guess I'm looking at a Samsung instead :/

Um, actually I exchanged my first device with a new one and it is gone. I was super sensitive to the sound although my cousin and the best buy guy could not hear it. I was exactly as OP described. Totally gone.
The one difference in the two phones is the first one I received needed to receive updates out of the box and the second one already had the updates. So i'm assuming the first was from an older batch of phones.
PS THIS IS A VERIZON DEVICE!!!!
OP I would suggest swapping it out. It doesn't hurt to swap it out and get a new one. If it still does it your only out a few minutes of time.

That is actually good news. If it's really gone. Am bit skeptical, coming from countless threads, and some devices on my own in N4.
Well another thing I remember was that some ppl reported like you over the N4. Issue gone. And then few weeks after a re-post. "It's back"
Let's hope that does not happen though.
How long you have it already?

I mean the screeching noise on my first device was constant. From the time I got it on day one. I just thought maybe it was me, or it was just something kind of temporary etc.. My girlfriend even made jokes about how I was getting old (im about to turn 25 lol) and its just my hearing. As soon as I got the second device it stopped. I was told it is probably a resistor or something like that making more noise than it should. I dont know.
I've had the second device for about two weeks or so.

This sounds encouraging... so maybe it will be fixed on mine when I get it back? Store would not hear of just swapping it out for a new one on the spot so I'm stuck waiting.
usually when you hear hissesbits bad reception, but sometimes its bad simcard and rarely some hobbyist or secret agency listening in. Try elimination apps also, some could interfere somehow when trying to setup a tap
try different sim/network just in case, note different sim will erase some stuff
I forgot the obvious, liquid, damp environments like shower can break microphones or speakers or cause previously isolated components to leak into another

Yeah. No. That what we spoke of, is well documented and reported in N4.
Allegedly it's a shielding issue and as someone said the speaker or some other part is picking up static etc.
(Continued with data activity)
As said it's also on idle when screen of, phone sleeping....
The showering would make sense if they would do it by default in LG factories
Same goes with aps.
But there are 2 issues that are reported for G2. One i think is the call quality for Verizon I think that maybe can be fixed with a software update.
And then there is this. It's static noise, crackling, etc which can be heard "anytime". It's feint, but there. Where it's annoying for me is in the silent parts of a call, when no one talks and my ear is near the device.

actually just get a glass, or look at the mirror when you showered and how much condense is on it. then think, could that condense form on/in phone, you'd be amazed your microphone/speaker etc etc
Sonys strategy should be copied by all phone manufacturers

Where did you get it and how long ago?
When I spoke to Verizon they said that it is considered a manufacturer defect and that it would be absolutely no issue switching it. He also said they weren't receiving many complaints about this issue.
I purchased mine at Best Buy and they swapped it out (after 3 days) without any questions at all. He just said no problem and switched it out.
I would pitch a fit if they won't work with you. It wouldn't even hurt them as it would be sent back to LG as defective anyways.

I'm in Sweden and got mine at a normal electronics store, the international version and not operator branded or anything. I got mine Dec 16 and went back to the store Dec 21. The guy at the store first wanted to do a warranty claim but I called bull**** and stated DOA since it was not even a week old. I was in that store for an hour trying to just explain what the hell was wrong with it. They claim they couldn't just switch it for a new one since they couldn't reproduce the problem. I don't know how the hell they expect to reproduce the problem with a soundsystem pumping in store (no chance in hell of having as good hearing as at night or when it's just quiet!) and listening for it in a soundproof room seems kind of moot too. My apartment is not soundproof nor is it isolated from radio interference or even in a particularly hot spot for cell reception.
I'm guessing LG Sweden haven't heard so much about this since they probably haven't sold as many of them over here. I'm emailing LG to hear what they have to say for themselves. I am in no way backing down on this. if I get it back and the service papers state nothing done and nothing wrong (in which case the store will make me pay the shipping fees) I will void the purchase. Will see if they try to fight me on that too. I'm bringing big brother to the store next time, he gets... loud.
Update:
I was just in the store to get my phone after getting an email that said it had gotten back from the servicecenter having been repaired but the DOA claim was denied. The repairshop had added little to no info on what exactly they had repaired or why the DOA had been denied, I asked the woman in the store for clarification and I stated that the fact that the phone had been repaired it clearly showed that it was DOA. She went back to check and came back and questioned why her co-worker had even sent it in for repair in the first place as it was de facto DOA and their routine is not to send DOAs for repair.
I never did found out exactly was what wrong with it, I got a brand new phone and an apology right there on the spot. I'm about to charge my new phone now so I can't say if the new phone has the same sound issues or heat problems yet. I'll come back and edit this post with the results, just for future reference.

Have tried it out for a little while now, not enough for it to get hot, but I can confirm that the persistent noise from the top of the phone is present in the new one too. Even tried disconnecting electronics that might interfere (cordless phones, wifi dongles, computer, speakers) but no change.
As for call quality, the voice quality is definitely better, no tin-can or garbled speech, but if both sides happen to speak at the same time it gets a bit choppy and cut off.
I'm going to post a question on LG Sweden's FB page and see if they have the balls to answer or simply ignore it and call it a feature most people can't hear. I'm curious as to what exact part in the phone is making the noise.

Just as I suspected... it's present on every device...(maybe environment dependant)
Ppl just do not hear it or do not wanna hear it
Don't expect a fix. N4 never saw an acknowledgement....
