BB Priv Developer Edition available? - BlackBerry Priv

Does anyone know if there will be a BB Priv Developer Edition model available?

I would be shocked if this were the case.

They did have developer editions for the prototype phone prior to the Z10 but we can only hope

I doubt you will see this. The main focus of the device is that it can't be modded

I highly doubt you will see this. Would be cool in different colors though.

App shows in Android market but not Nexus market

The app titled: "Scriptures (beta)" shows up in my G1's market, but does not in my Nexus' market.
Any ideas what's going on?
Did you do any of the following to your Nexus One:
1. Unlocked bootloader?
2. Enable root?
If so, "Scriptures (Beta)" is a *protected* Android application and will not show up.
If not, then it's a OS "support" version issue.
Cheers,

My new N1 is not unlocked/rooted, but my old G1 *is*. But it's the G1 that sees the app fine, and the new N1 does not.
Must be an OS support issue.
I downloaded the app directly from the author's website and it works fine.

Yup. If that's the case, the author needs to fix it and update it on Android Market.
It's annoying for us developers and the damn manifest and API target/limits when "new" stuff comes out... *Sigh*
Anyrate, good deal you got around it!

application compatibility
Your phone is listed as a 2.1 device in the market, and if the apps don't specify compatibility (they introduced a compatibility layer in 2.0.1) then they won't show up since they won't work anyway (well, they might, but the general assumption is that they won't)
I guess that explains why AppManager Pro isn't showing up for me on my N1. Annoying. I love that app.
This explains why, when people were talking about Nexus One Torch and I decided to see what it was, my G1 couldn't see it. Now I have a Nexus I can (and it's good )
There are some errors I think, because I want Bonsai Blast which I think I remember was demo'd by the Bonsai Blast google developer for either droid or 2.1. I think it was a demo for the new resolution, so I know it can't be that, and I don't think a google Dev would forget to update his extremely popular app.
Let the application owners know!
When the moto droid came out, I emailed a few developers and some even came out with an update the very next day!

can somebody e-mail the developer of Bonsai blast then please? or tell me his/her/their name(s)/email?
If we take the conservative assumption that it must be listed on the Google's own market place before it would work on Nexus, how many applications are available at the moment? Is there good statistics on that yet?
Perhaps most of them would work on Nexus one anyway? Love to hear from people who have tried using the applications written for the older OS version and see if they are generally still compatible. It's hard to imagine how a version upgrade would upset the older applications too much.

Really the only set-back is the resolution. All of the hardware has exponentially increased. All of Androids apps are written in java, which is pretty standard and should have no problem running on all android platforms.
The only time it should be disallowed would be if a game were to be written for the N1 specs (which cannot run on the G1), and therefore not shown in the market for the G1.
I suppose developers don't want their games to look too pixelated on the N1 until they update the resolutions. It's a waiting game now, since there are absolutely NO games available unless you want to play solitaire.
Or you could email the devs to death requesting an update...

BlueTooth 4.0: BLE device to play with

Hi.
I'd like to experiment with a new feature provided by Nokia's "Black update", BT 4.0 with new protocol for "Low Energy" devices (BLE).
Could somebody recommend me some cheap device with open/known protocol, to play with?
Also, if you have knowledge (somehow; I know, there is NO info at all but ) about new API/protocols (even it's not documented or available yet), could you please share?
Thanks!
If you can find a used FitBit, that would be a good start. I think I saw some third party apps in the store already.

BLE support is available for the handsets with Nokia's Black update only; I don't think there are some apps in the store 'cause Nokia just started distribution of the Black update. Or supported Fitbits are using their custom API and standard BT...

Hmm, I'm very confused... It sounds like current WP8 already supports BLE, right? However why Nokia said it's a "Black update" only feature?
Is anybody knows the answer?

It was a Software limitation from the OS. Now with Nokia Black you also are getting the GDR3 Update. And not the Nokia Black update give you BLE, its the GDR3

Thanks for explanation! By the way, Android introduced a new API functionality to work with BLE; do you know, what about WP8+GDR3? Should/can I still use an "old way" (PeerFinder + StreamSocket) or there are some new APIs for BLE?

Root possible?

I know its too early but what do you guys this about rooting/custom roms for venice?
BB ceo said (something along the lines) that they will only make an android device if it is secured enough. WOuld that mean a locked bootloader etc? Moreover, it is using a much more secure kernel (http://berryflow.com/2015/09/blackberrys-android-slider-using-hardened-linux-kernel/) and i've read that some beginner's tools (eg enabling developer's options, sideloading apps etc) are blocked.
So what do you guys think? As for me, I believe in this community and i know one way or another, we will be able to install our favourite custom roms/apps on venice. Although I dont know if it would happen 2 days after launch of 2 years after the device reaches the market!
Btw cant wait for the device! I hope blackberry becomes a force again after this phone. I'll buy it the day it's bootloader gets unlocked + root is acheived
Do you have a source on the Priv blocking sideloaded apps? That would be very unfortunate. Locked bootloader is a given but I would still like to be able to install my favorite apks.
I can't see things like developer options/USB debugging etc being outright blocked. That just seems like a great way to alienate the majority of the userbase that a device like this is targeted towards.
This is my main concern... I want this phone, badly. But after having a G4, having to wait for root and still not having any decent roms I won't get the Priv if it doesn't at least get root. It's stock-ish android so I can deal with lack of roms but no root, no sale.
Sent from my LG-H811 using Tapatalk
No idea why anyone here thinks they would do that. Even on BB10 devices installing apks is allowed - and they sure wouldn´t do otherwise on an Android device - that would be crazy.
and yes, bl will be locked and encrypted - root - well that will be something to wait for.
:good:
Bootloader WILL be locked, that's a no brainer. But locking out sideloading, developer options is not possible without TOTALLY killing interest and sales. Blackberry desperately needs Priv to succeed. This is their last chance to avoid becoming the next Nokia. So no, we will have at least sideloading available. Honestly, it doesn't matter if they lock out all these essential features, if they release at least the kernel source and device tree day-and-date with the phone. If you have these, we're better off building a CM 12 (or 13:fingers-crossed ROM for the Priv.

hmm. So do you think it would be possible to unlock the bootloader or it can never be unlocked?
btw slightly offtopic, but is there any phone which has a completely locked bootloader (ie has never been unlocked)?
Welp a leaked pic about the security settings confirms developer options can be enabled, so sideloaded apps is probably a go to. False alarm, peeps!

I wouldn't count on too much. The developer options could have easily been changed and some removed. As BB main selling point is security I expect this device to be one of the harder ones to crack.
As for the bootloader questions. Yes there have been a few that were uncrackable, a dirty hack to by pass has worked on some.
I imagine root is just a matter of time. Unless they lock the system partition, which other manufacturers have done in the past (Looking at you HTC). Even so, it has been done and s-on/off has been cracked before. Alternatives to locking include e-fuses, like in legacy motorola devices.
Bootloaders on the other hand, we're probably going to have to get some concrete evidence. It is most likely locked in my personal opinion.
This is all just speculation. Hopefully Blackberry can find a good balance.

The efuze us still used in many devices and if I know blackberry they will have it check against its servers for security. Once it detects root it will most likely disable the device. Or most of the functions that use BB servers. Remember everything is routed through Blackberrys servers in Canada so if their servers go do so does the device.

I would be completely fine with them locking out the BB services when root is discovered. But locking down the hardware would be overstepping their bounds. It's our hardware, not theirs. I know that doesn't mean they couldn't still do it, I just think it would be a jerk move.
It would be like if Microsoft bricked xbox machines that have been modded. They don't, they just ban you from XBox Live if they detect it. I think it should be the same approach.
Yes but even MS has locked the bootloader on Many of their 32 bit machines now. Also I have a link that you might want to read where is passed then modding our devices at all will become illegal.

Priv Developer Phone

There's a Blackberry Priv for sale on ebay listed as a developer edition. I don't know if that's true or not but I figured someone here might be interested in it.

Not my listing btw.
Seems to be regular prov for parts
Sent from my SGH-T699 using XDA-Developers mobile app
Well, the "Not for resale" marking on the bottom suggests that it was either a demo model, like the ones that were circulated out to the media last summer, or it may very well be a 'developer edition' that would have been sent out to developers ahead of release in a similar manner. In terms of differences, there likely are none, excepting that maybe the build quality could be better or worse, depending on whether it was pre-mass production run, or if it was the first batch of mass production, and probably had the Android developer options enabled as default. Might be that the OS version is quite old, if they haven't been keeping it up to date. Other than that, nothing special. I wouldn't use it for parts, it sounds like it would be just fine as a wifi-only device.
Yeah I figured it's nothing special but posted it on the off chance one of yall wanted to mess with it.

This has been discussed previously. Samsung added h/w level security to the Exynos 8895. Until it's in peoples hands no one knows for sure whether the changes will affect unlocking the bootloader.

Based on this, possibly none. If the only reason anyone is buying Exynos vs. S-835 is the unlocked bootloader you might want to hold off being the first to get it.
Finally, the Exynos 8895 also includes what Samsung is calling an “enhanced security sub-system with a separate security processing unit” for use with user authentication, mobile payments, and the like. Based on Samsung’s description this sounds a heck of a lot like Apple’s Secure Enclave, which would be a very welcome development, as in Apple’s case it has made their phones a lot harder to break into.

Its been compared to the Apple Secure Enclave (Security Coprocessor). Here's its description...
Security circuit designed to perform secure services for the rest of the SOC
Prevents main processor from gaining direct access to sensitive data
Used to support a number of different services - Most notably Touch ID
Runs its own operating system - Includes its own kernel, drivers, services, and applications
Sounds to me like anything security related is being moved to a separate and independent h/w coprocessor that's an integrated component of the SoC. The motive has to be a level of security that's as impenetrable as Apple's and significantly stronger than s/w based alternatives. Here's something Qualcomm got called out on recently...
A blog post published Thursday revealed that in stark contrast to the iPhone's iOS, Qualcomm-powered Android devices store the disk encryption keys in software. That leaves the keys vulnerable to a variety of attacks that can pull a key off a device. From there, the key can be loaded onto a server cluster, field-programmable gate array, or supercomputer that has been optimized for super-fast password cracking.
https://arstechnica.com/security/20...sk-encryption-just-got-much-weaker-heres-why/
This is a Samsung first being introduced on the 8895. What it means and how its implemented remain to be seen but that level of security investment by Samsung can't be good for things likely hackable bootloaders.
So wait, the snapdragon that USA is getting maybe easier to get an unlocked bootloader for? Based on this convo I am reading here?

waiting for the answer to this!
So no one with an Exynos variant has tried to unlock the bootloader yet? Come on! Give us an answer! NOT Snapdragon, but Exynos. No Snapdragon owners need reply as you do NOT know. Only Exynos owners can answer this question.
Last year was simple OEM unlock for Galaxy S7 Exynos variants, I've been told repeatedly. That's what I'm talking about, whether it's still that easy or not.
I'm not talking about needing a dev to do magic.
GALAXY S7 EXYNOS
To OEM unlock is very easy on the exynos models . In our model is allow to do it with the click of a button , you have to:
Go to Settings / About device / Software info / Tap 7 times on Build number to enable Developer
Once developer options are enable ( you will see it under Settings) enter there you will see the option OEM Enable
