Nexus 6P USB access - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, on my previous phone (Xperia Z2) I can plug in to my computer via USB and copy files to/from the internal storage or SD card. When I plug my Nexus 6P in to the computer the same way, I just get an empty folder. I can't see all the files on the internal Android filesystem. Is this normal?
(I'm trying to copy some files into the /Android/data folder)

I've always been able to fix this by going to Developer Options (assuming you've set yourself up) under Settings, selecting "Select USB Configuration" and then toggling from MTP to PTP and then back to MTP.

I did enable file transfer. When I do I get the bing, bing, bing, sound in lowering tone, not in increasing tone. i.e. I get the sound when disconnecting a device. When I enable PTP I can access the DCIM and Pictures folder, but that is it. When I go back to MTP, i just get the disconnecting sound and my access I did have with PTP disappears. Any suggestions?

Lol - that can be fun.
Seems, for Windows anyway, the trick is getting the right driver to install, instead of what Windows likes to auto install.
That usually means uninstalling drivers, better yet, manually installing/updating the driver with the proper one.
You can Google the issue for more detailed info, way too much to go through here.
Good luck!

[Q] MTP USB Device problem

Today, When I connect my Nexus 4 to my computer it starts to install the drivers.
The driver consist of 3 parts, but the last one, the MTP USB device, fails to install. I tried restarting my pc and also tried alternate drivers for Windows 7 32bit.
Anyone familiar with this problem and/or it's solution?

Download and install these usb drivers from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1998650.
edit.. oops, seems i cannot read.
Uninstall the drivers that you have already attempted to install. If you want fastboot/adb, install the usb drivers manually linked 2 posts above me. If you want to simply copy files, make sure you have at least windows media player 11 installed and it will take care of the rest.

same here. Fix?
does anyone know ?
same here but after searching a while and only be able to connect via MTP I found this not a state of the art solution:
I use to rename the file I want to move/copy/paste from xxxx.zip or whatever in xxxx.jpg, even for roms anf kernel
for example I want to copy stremax.zip in my N4 /sdcard/
on the pc just rename it to stremax.jpg
connect via MTP
copy the renamed file to /sdcard
once disconnected use a file manager to rename it to stremax.zip and move/copy/delete or whatever you want
I know, it's rude, some developer is cursing my name, but it works..
other solution is installing airdroid but you need to be on same wi-fi network

[Q] Win8 mounting my N4 without a drive letter. Help?

Ok so I am having this problem with my Nexus 4 and the way it is being mounted (if thats the right word) to Windows 8.
I have used the WUGS root toolkit to root and unlock and whatever my phone so I have done the driver thing that comes with that (sorry im a noob) but even before that I was never able to get my N4 to mount "with a drive letter" (if you will).
Here is a screen shot to help explain,

"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
If you will notice I have Windows (C and SSD (D and if i were to plug in a USB flash drive it would be assigned a letter and it would show up. For whatever reason it would seem my N4 is being treated as a camera or some other type of device because It is not being given a drive letter. Instead the weird external HD icon is there and then the harddisk icon labeled Internal Storage.
Some things i have tried, or know i have set: Media Device (MTP) is the selected mode on my phone, i have tried it the other way to no success. my phone does have android debugging enabled, I have tried resetting the windows autoplay settings and selecting a different option (before it auto opened explorer to the internal storage folder).
I am currently running Paranoid Android 3.60 however I had the same problem since the day i got my Nexus 4 with stock everything on it. I believe its an issue with the way my windows 8 computer treats it.
If anyone can help me that would be greatly appreciated. thank you!
I think this has to do with it not having mass storage mode. So that means that a computer will only detect it as a media device, not a USB storage device, and so it isnt mounted, it is accessed. If it was mounted, it would have to be unmounted from the device from which it is connected to, and if it was disconnected, you wouldnt be able to access the files on the phone itself.
Well thats why i think it doesnt mount with a letter.

This makes some sense to me, but can you elaborate on how i might get my computer to mount my android device? is there a reason it was set up like this? Is it my phone or my computer that is the cause? Anything else you can tell me would be great. Thanks

Nothing is the cause, its just how it interacts with a computer, so neither the computer or phone are at fault, its just how the tech is made. I tried googling for you on how to get a MTP device to get a drive letter, but its getting late for me, and im coming up with zilch. I hope someone else can help you out.

hmmmmm, that seems like a flaw in the tech. why did they develop MTP mode / why do we even use it if it lacks the ability to mount it to a drive letter? im assuming there are benefits I am not aware of. Thanks for your help. Ive been doing googling as well but havent come up with anything. I have a little more knowledge on the issue thanks to you and so I will try my searches again. THanks.

SD folder is not showing up while connect the N4 to PC

Hi,
I want to copy a zip file to the N4's memory.
But the folder is not poping up (a pop'ed up menu should open up when the device is connceted to PC) ... even not the menu.
The driver's are installed and the PC recognized the N4 (screenshot).
USB debugging is ticked in settings.
What could be the reason for that and how it can be resolved?
Thank you!

Try unticking USB debug.

If u meant to Bootloader - yes, i did made the unlocking procedure (by some tool called - N-Cry).
Is there a way to know it's do unlocked for sure?
In device manager (pc) i have this under "Samsung android device":
Google Nexus ADB Interface

Thank's very much ... hope to hear from you guys asap.
i meant unlocked like u press the power bottom and put ur password not ur bootloader try disabling and enabling ur driver on ur laptop or pc and see if it will work
Edit: I cannot copy the ZIP files...guess bc's it connected as a camera.
So it still - did not resolved.

Heyy...
Thank you for your solution.
I disabled and enabled it again.
Then, i chose it to be connected as "Camera (PTP)".
Fixed!
Thank you!
P.S: it's not wierd that the driver ("Google Nexus ADB Interface") located on device manager under "Samsung android device" ?
maybe it has the same driver as galaxy nexus :S no idea about these things so much
Yes it's weird, did you have also a Galaxy Nexus? But if now it works, don't mind

Maybe i should uninstall this Samsung driver?
Never had a Galaxy nexus at all.
It's working only in camera mode...can't copy files (zip) into the memory.
open notification bar and tap the usb connection option u shoud select media device (MTP) not camera.. i dont have any idea about the driver what it should have be but mine is like the pic i attached.

After uninstalling this "nexus..." driver , i connected the n4 again ("media") and now it 99% o.k.
Why "99%?
Bc's finaly it show's "nexus 4" on the device manager - but with a yellow "?"
Except for that - it looks like it working...the SD folder is now popping up.
Hope it is not just a matter of luck and in about 2 day's when i'll need it again - it will start doing that again.
Oh. how can i fix this yellow "?"
Thank you all !!
there are plenty of these sh*ts on windows.. dont care so much

Now after a reset of the phone, device isn't recognized and the connected as media device doesn't show up anymore. Tried more than 1 computer.
Try uninstall the USB drivers from your PC. Or try other USB ports to detect your device. Sounds like your USB drivers has screwed up. Should not be your device problem.

I tried on some other computers... You think uninstalling the drive will solve the problem since it's not on my main PC only?
EDIT : May it have something to do with this?
I have a feeling it is the charging port. I had a similar issue. Are you good with a soldering iron?

Before start working on the hardware, I suggest to investigate the software side further. Have you make a factory reset? (Worst case). Try enable and disable the USB debugging mode as well. http://androidteen.com/how-to-enable-usb-debugging-mode-on-android-devices/
Try to toggle both media file mode and camera mode. See what is the response from your device to pc.

View files on PC using adoptable storage

I know that adoptable storage is encrypted, but is there any way to easily transfer the contents from my phone to my PC now? I just want to take pictures off and move them onto a network drive. I have TWRP 3.0.0.0, MM (without the Feb security update, since that still won't install), and an unlocked bootloader. I am NOT rooted, but am willing to do so if that will solve this issue.
Haven't heard of anyone successfully doing this as of yet. Perhaps a future Android update will fix this or a solution will arrive via a xposed module. The best workaround currently is to backup photos to Google drive (or some other service like OneDrive) and retrieve that way.

Whoa- I definitely have tried messing with those USB settings to no avail, but when I looked at your screenshot, I noticed that you had USB debugging turned off (mine was on).
When I turned it off, I could now see the SD card listed in Windows (progress!) but got a new error coming from Windows:
"The device is currently busy and its contents many not be fully displayed. If another application is copying data to or from the device, please wait for it to finish and then retry."
When i click 'Ok', it returns me to the Windows Explorer screen showing my SD Card as empty. When i re-clicked on the SD Card in the Explorer nav bar, after a few tries i could see my files (i sometimes have to change the 'Use USB for' setting for some reason. Sometimes Transfer Photos seems to work, and sometimes Transfer Files. I'm not sure why the erratic behavior, because i can now at least get to my files as needed.
It seems that (at least for me), I need to turn off USB debugging to see my files. Has this always been the case? I can't remember needing to disable it in the past- maybe it behaves differently now.
Either way, many, many thanks!
No it works fine with debugging turned on as well. I suspect a driver issue with Windows. Or, a faulty cable.
