View files on PC using adoptable storage - X Style (Pure) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know that adoptable storage is encrypted, but is there any way to easily transfer the contents from my phone to my PC now? I just want to take pictures off and move them onto a network drive. I have TWRP 3.0.0.0, MM (without the Feb security update, since that still won't install), and an unlocked bootloader. I am NOT rooted, but am willing to do so if that will solve this issue.

Haven't heard of anyone successfully doing this as of yet. Perhaps a future Android update will fix this or a solution will arrive via a xposed module. The best workaround currently is to backup photos to Google drive (or some other service like OneDrive) and retrieve that way.
Sent from my awesome phone!

I have access to my files on PC.

Is your SD card set as portable storage or as Adoptable storage? I know that portable storage allows PC access (since it is not encrypted), but have been unable to access from my PC since converting to adoptable.

Adopted of course. You allow access and it still doesn't show on PC?

Well, what do you mean by 'allow access'? Are you talking about one of the options from the USB debugging notification in Android, or something different?

Whoa- I definitely have tried messing with those USB settings to no avail, but when I looked at your screenshot, I noticed that you had USB debugging turned off (mine was on).
When I turned it off, I could now see the SD card listed in Windows (progress!) but got a new error coming from Windows:
"The device is currently busy and its contents many not be fully displayed. If another application is copying data to or from the device, please wait for it to finish and then retry."
When i click 'Ok', it returns me to the Windows Explorer screen showing my SD Card as empty. When i re-clicked on the SD Card in the Explorer nav bar, after a few tries i could see my files (i sometimes have to change the 'Use USB for' setting for some reason. Sometimes Transfer Photos seems to work, and sometimes Transfer Files. I'm not sure why the erratic behavior, because i can now at least get to my files as needed.
It seems that (at least for me), I need to turn off USB debugging to see my files. Has this always been the case? I can't remember needing to disable it in the past- maybe it behaves differently now.
Either way, many, many thanks!

No it works fine with debugging turned on as well. I suspect a driver issue with Windows. Or, a faulty cable.

[APP IDEA] Mount disk image as USB mass storage

Hi, this is my first post here. I've been meaning to sign up for a while, but just had an idea for an app that I can't make and decided I had to spam it somewhere in case it inspires someone. Anyway, here it is:
If it was somehow possible to mount a disk image instead of the actual SD card, it might be possible to have a bunch of handy boot images for fixing and administering computers.
For example SystemRescueCD, Ubuntu's mini install CD and a Windows password recovery disk would fit into about 150MB, which is tiny compared to a 16GB SD card.
Would this be possible? I guess it would require root if it was, but it would turn your Android device into an administrator's swiss army knife.
Sounds like a cool idea if possible...
I was actually exploring this a little bit.
First issue is you can't mount an iso (ISO9660/CDFS) under Android, however, you could an ext3 image. I didn't get much further than this when looking into mounting images.
Second issue is, I have no idea how to tell Android to mount /this/path/to/usb/mass/sotrage rather than /sdcard.
I will be messing with this some where when I can. I think I'd tackle the second issue before the rest of the first one since I'm sure a fat32 (for Windows) or a ext2 image could be mounted and booted from in general.
I'll post any updates if I find anything out.
I've made quite a bit of progress on this idea. I have successfully mounted a usb drive image and been able to share that via USB Mass Storage. My problem now is, I can't seem to get my Captivate to be seen as a bootable USB drive on a PC that is booting.

I would be interested in knowing how you did this, if you'd care to share it
I would like to know how you did that too
I have been wondering/playing around with that same idea.
I also looked for the /system/ect/cdrom.iso file that all these posts seem to mention as well and have been unable to locate it.
There are three ideas that I would like to put out there...
1.) Replace the Virtual "Motorola Driver" CD that auto loads when "USB Mass Storage" is on and "USB debugging" is off.
If you enter the boot menu on a computer with those options. When you go under CD-ROMs to boot from, you will see "USB-CDROM0: MotorolaMB810 000" as an option. This depends on your phone of course.

}
2.) Put an ISO on the internal memory and have the OS auto mount it as per an app or some start up script. (Would be nice to have a widget that when on mounts an bootable ISO for us techs)
3.) Create a 2nd partition on the SD card that computers recognize as a boot drive. (Prob the most limiting of the three and not the one I'd like to see be done compared to the others.
Has anyone looked at this? Can't seem to get to work on my GS3 though...

[Q] Help! Screen broke with PIN lock, need help mounting file system with CWM.

So I had the magical luck of having my S4 fall out of my pocket while closing my car door, shattered to pieces, no touch response from the glass.
The problem is, I had the device locked with a pattern & pin, so I can't just plug in and backup all my photos and stuff that were saved with local device storage. I also can't get adb to connect to the device (with developer options enabled), I always get a "device offline" error (I've updated ADB to the current 4.2.2 version, but I cant whitelist it because I can't allow it from the phone without touch)
Now, I still have root, and I was able to blindly install CWM (the OUDHS-Recovery-jfltespr-1.0.3.3.tar) version with Odin. I'm assuming it went well because I heard the sprint chime on restart.
WHAT I NEED: Is someone to either give me some screenshots (or number of button presses) to enable internal storage to be accessible by usb in cwm (also how to get into it too). I figure if I'm able to use volume presses and the home button I can get to my internal files. Other than this option I'm at a loss before I return it. If anyone can help I would be so damn grateful.
I'll draw you a picture too.
EDIT 1: I have a picture of the main CWM screen from a youtube video here:

"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Now all i need is the mount and storage menu
So nobody can help? I didn't think a cwm menu was that hard to come by with an S4.

Were you able to connect with adb before? Was usb debugging checked in settings before the drop?
If you could get adb to connect, you could use a program like android screencast to view your phones screen on your computer.

That was my first move actually.
Problem is, even though debugging was enabled, I can't whitelist my PC from my phone. This is a new 4.2.2 feature to prevent data theft ironically.
All of these options will just return an "adb: device offline" error when it's connected. Trust me, I wish it was that easy.
You can't connect while in recovery either?
It would be kind of a pain, but you could pull multiple files that way.

[Q] Anyone using torrent on Android?

Im using note3,0 KitKat 4.4.2, and having problem with my microSD card when i downloading via torrent app.
Downloading filed directly into my phone storage works fine, however, i am getting error whenever i set the downloading directory into my extSD card.
Used ttorrent,Utorrent Bittorrent apps and none of those worked for me. Both Bit/u Torrent showed me "Error : write to disk(check)", and Ttorrent showed me 'this folder is read-only, it cannot be selected'. (as thumbnails shows.)
Its weird because i can move/copy files from Device storage into Sd memory card via "my files(the basic app.)", and pictures that i took saves into the extSD card...which means i can write on there while torrent doesnt allow me download into the SD card.
is there any solutions on this? Oh, and im not rooted yet.

KitKat brought a new security "feature", which does not allow any non-system apps to write to external SD card. The only way to remove it is by rooting. A workaround is to download to your phone storage and then, on PC, move it over to the external SD.
I am on KitKat and rooted I used the patch and it works all fine to save in memory card
Sent from my SM-N900 using Tapatalk
I use aTorrent.
I think your external card went bad.
Mine did a few months ago.
I had a 64gb that one stopped working.
Nothing was getting saved to it (nothing could get written to it).
It
Luckily it allowed me to copy from it to my desktop.
I'm on 4.3
Welcome to KitKat. You'll find about a few thousand threads on this issue on XDA.
Google added new security settings to KitKat which makes it impossible for apps to write to the external SD without a workaround from the devs, or Root.
Stock has been changed to work (You still can't rename anything, though). Any 3rd party app needs to be changed by the developer.
File Manager
Ive noticed once ive downloaded the file through Ttorrent you can go to the file manager select the the file and just move it to whatever folder you want on the SDcard. I just use the standard file manager.

[Q] Why would Dropsync/Autosync/Onesync not be able to write to emulated/0?

I'm having a strange problem with Dropsync/Autosync/Onesync on my GS4 running the "Mostly Stock NG2 v1.3" ROM -- I patched it to allow writing to the external SD card, but for some reason, even though the sync apps show the external SD card as writable, they don't show the emulated/0 folder as being writable, and the apps don't create their application directories as they normally should -- as a result, even though they can write to the SD card, they can't sync because they can't write to the device to keep track of what has been synced. I contacted the developer but he wasn't able to help me, besides identifying the problem is on the device storage side of things rather than a SD card issue.

I suggest you try a different ROM. There are a lot of important things missing in that ROM. Dialer chooses don't work for one. Almost any other NG2 ROM has the SD Card fix.

Any recommendations? I used to run TriForceROM 5.4 -- I'd like to find something similar, with crapware removed, wifi hotspot added, etc. but not a complete overhaul that introduces new problems.

Zenpad 8.0 (Z380M)

Hi All,
Apologies If I'm posting in the wrong place.
My partner has just purchased the Zenpad 8.0 (Z380M)
When it's connected to my Win 10 laptop by USB cable only the PC Suite is visible as a CD drive. The internal memory isn't visible for transferring music etc. I E-mailed support and was advised to carry out a factory reset. I have done this and it is still the same. How do I get rid of the CD drive and enable the internal memory to be visible ?

When its connected to your computer open up the cd drive that it mounts as and there should be some software available for you to install which will allow you to interact with the tablet with software that is meant specifically for it. You can also pull down the quick settings banner when the tablet is connected and you should see a notification saying the tablet is charging or that its connected to a pc, click that notification and you should have a few options to choose from. Charging, using to transfer photos, transfer media files MTP, Install software. Something along those lines.
Thanks for the reply.
The problem I had was the software I wanted to use (Calibre) worked outside the PC Suite software that it was trying to install. Thankfully after a firmware upgrade to Android 7.0 the problem went away, and I can now see the internal memory.
