Yea, so ive brought this up before and i see the power button still being the first mechanical button to break over time. Mainly because you have to press it constantly just to use the phone or wake the phone up to use.
So heres some ideas, correct me or critique them, and reply if theres already good alternatives/apps out there.
I know some of these ideas can drain the battery, but work with me on this...
- When an sms/mms is received i want the screen to auto turn on. Windows mobile did this from what i remember and it was a novelty.
- Be able to turn the screen on by swiping one or two of the lower capacitive buttons instead of pressing the power button.
- Have the screen dim to its lowest setting instead of fully turning off. (dunno how battery draining this can be) Windows mobile did this as well.
- Have an app monitor the motion sensor in the phone to where if you pick the phone up from a flat surface (horiz position) the screen auto turns on.. and maybe an extra option of having the screen turn on if theres a shake or jostle (of course you could adjust the sensitivity). But having this app running in the background all the time could be draining. I mean shiii.. the phone knows when youre in call and if your phone is up to your head so why cant we have that feature to turn on the screen instead of using the power button.
I would pay good money for someone to develop this. An all in one app that includes all those options. I'll do the graphic work if need be.
Most of that seems a little out there and un-doable, but I do know that Handcent has an option to turn on your phone when a sms/mms is received with a small box in the center of the screen for a quick reply. Hope that helps a little.
^^^ beat me to it.
if you use smspopup or handcent, they both have option for the screen to come on when you get a new text message.
they also popup a box to read the message and have the option to quick reply or go to the messaging app. you can turn this off tho and just have the screen wake up for any where from 10 seconds to like 5 minutes.

How so? Phone turns quiet when picked up im sure it can be set to turn on when picked up. SMS as someone mentioned, handcent does. Apparently "screebl" does the screen turn on, testing now.
you can use an app called no lock that will allow you to use the volume buttons to wake the phone, i don't think that you'll be able to wake by using that capacitive buttons - this would essentially mean that your phone would never sleep.
and I'm almost positive that you can set up a profile in tasker to take care of the dimming instead of turning off the screen. In fact, you could probably set up most, if not all of these through various tasker profiles.
Not to mention how much battery it would waste polling the accelerometer to see if it's been moved.

actually those are all things that seem pretty mainstream from an OS derived from the most robust OS out there [linux]. Yes, those can all be done on android. Unfortunately there is a lack of programmers ... Especially to something that probably wont appeal to the ones we do have...
Also some kernel modifications will be necessary...
Im sorry i cant do this for you... If i could I would... Just because our phones can... and a couple of those things should already be with us...
Someone help us!!
Coming from the iphone. I loved the look of the evo... but I now miss the home button for this exact reason. Lol
The swiping of the captive keys sounds great. I doubt its doable though..
EDIT: ok, screebl is cool. And eliminates the need to press the power to put it to sleep... but it doesn't wake it up when picked up, so it solves half the problem.

i'd rather keep the default stock sms app rather than delving into something 3rd party.
i'll try the handcent, but doubt i keep it long..

Why my thread got closed I wana know how to make x10 vibrate and ring at sametime when receiving a call.
because unless there is something lost in the translation, it is VERY obvious that the phone can vibrate and ring at same time. its a basic function of the phone. is that not what you meant?

Honestly I don't know why people are assuming you don't know what you're doing, I think it's safe to say you know how the settings on your phone work, after all you are posting on XDA so one would think you're tech savvy enough to know how to enable vibrate and ring...despite the large number of morons on here nowadays.
What I'm getting at is I'm experiencing a similar problem myself. Only my phone no longer vibrates when I receive messages. It will vibrate and ring for incoming calls but only ring and no longer vibrate for sms. I never changed anything, it just stopped working properly about 2 weeks ago and I was hoping the problem would solve itself, sadly it hasn't yet. I've double checked every setting, uninstalled and reinstalled different apps and have emailed Handcent about the issue, no solution so far.
Also, when I go to the notification settings in Handcent and "test notification" it never vibrates now, regardless of the vibration pattern I select.
Any real help other than unfunny childish smartass comments would be appreciated, for both of us I think.

I dont think they are childish comments, but the comments are assuming a lack of technical ability
What troubleshooting have you done? What (apart from uninstalling apps and changing settings) have you done at all? Have you thought that your phone may be broken?
Chances are that if it is failing at vibrate, then no amount of software tweaks or 3rd party apps can fix a hardware fault. TEST IT using the service menu.
(Lock screen - Menu, Back, Back, Menu, Back, Menu, Menu, Back) Service tests => Vibrator. If your phone does not vibrate, then you have a problem. If it does vibrate then go back and check all your settings again - factory restore if required!

How can we assume that the user has any technical skill when this is what was written. If you have an issue, please give a decent outline of what it is (like RVICTORG has done) and the other users can probably see where you are going wrong. "Its not working" does not help anyone.

No I haven't looked at any of his other threads, and believe me I know there's a lot of idiots on this forum nowadays, but I guess benefit of the doubt before harsh words :S Doesn't matter now, he solved his problem but I haven't resolved mine.
Like I said in my earlier post, my phone will vibrate for incoming calls, just not messages any more. The service test was one of the first things I did and I can confirm my phone will still vibrate. I have absolutely no idea why it's not for messages and I feel like I've exhausted all possible solutions barring re-flashing firmware. I haven't received a response from Handsent yet, based on that and no others commenting here I assume this is just an annoying isolated incident.
Will update if I find a solution. Thanks for your suggestions guys despite me having already trying them it's still appreciated and if you think of anything else let me know, peace.

Hey guys,
I noticed when I plug in headphones it pops that stupid little icon up saying "You have earphones plugged, want to launch mah crap?" and found it rather annoying. Especially because I use the Google Music app, and when you're playing music there's two pairs of headphones. Looks cluttered.
After a little snooping through system APKs for which one looks after that I found that it's called ContextAwareService.apk in /system/app/
If you delete this the audio applications area doesn't show up in the notification area as well as the headphones icon.
If you want to remove it, back up the APK first because I don't know if it stops anything else (I haven't noticed anything breaking). If you didn't back it up... you're lucky because I've attached the original APK.
Hope this helps someone, I saw people wondering if you can modify that list. I personally just wanted to remove it because I removed the Samsung crap and it was displaying an empty area and two headphones when I used the Google Music app.
You do need to be rooted for this, and my suggestion is to use Root Explorer if you don't know your way around ADB
i dont mind it i just wish i could change the garbage listed in it.
It can also just be frozen with titanium backup if rooted.
Can anyone confirm if this disables anything else?

Thank you very much! I can't get my head around why that icon even exists? I mean do we really need a reminder that we have our headphones plugged in? Are we that stupid?
Used TB to freeze that service and it worked great. Thanks again.
Now wondering what else gets affected by that service?

For those who have yet to root, you can also use the ICS Disable App function. Seems to work just fine for removing it. I would be interested in modifying the apps and use it, but until we can mod it, I will disable it.

If you go under Settings -> App Manager -> All -> And it's in that list, much safer and easier than TitaniumBackup and ADB, and it's easily reversible.

It's more of a preference, I don't like a bunch of icons at the top. Might be a little bit of a minimalist. I prefer to keep that area clean for notifications instead of notifying me that I have a headset/aux cable plugged in.
Long shot.
Do you know how we can get rid of the persistant connected to wifi in teh notification area?
It is not needed and steals from real estate.
Thank you. After knocking out the ongoing wifi notification and the annoying wifi pop-up, this was my last annoyance.
Now that I've frozen it with Titanium Backup, it's all good.
