Yea, so ive brought this up before and i see the power button still being the first mechanical button to break over time. Mainly because you have to press it constantly just to use the phone or wake the phone up to use.
So heres some ideas, correct me or critique them, and reply if theres already good alternatives/apps out there.
I know some of these ideas can drain the battery, but work with me on this...
- When an sms/mms is received i want the screen to auto turn on. Windows mobile did this from what i remember and it was a novelty.
- Be able to turn the screen on by swiping one or two of the lower capacitive buttons instead of pressing the power button.
- Have the screen dim to its lowest setting instead of fully turning off. (dunno how battery draining this can be) Windows mobile did this as well.
- Have an app monitor the motion sensor in the phone to where if you pick the phone up from a flat surface (horiz position) the screen auto turns on.. and maybe an extra option of having the screen turn on if theres a shake or jostle (of course you could adjust the sensitivity). But having this app running in the background all the time could be draining. I mean shiii.. the phone knows when youre in call and if your phone is up to your head so why cant we have that feature to turn on the screen instead of using the power button.
I would pay good money for someone to develop this. An all in one app that includes all those options. I'll do the graphic work if need be.
Most of that seems a little out there and un-doable, but I do know that Handcent has an option to turn on your phone when a sms/mms is received with a small box in the center of the screen for a quick reply. Hope that helps a little.
^^^ beat me to it.
if you use smspopup or handcent, they both have option for the screen to come on when you get a new text message.
they also popup a box to read the message and have the option to quick reply or go to the messaging app. you can turn this off tho and just have the screen wake up for any where from 10 seconds to like 5 minutes.

How so? Phone turns quiet when picked up im sure it can be set to turn on when picked up. SMS as someone mentioned, handcent does. Apparently "screebl" does the screen turn on, testing now.
you can use an app called no lock that will allow you to use the volume buttons to wake the phone, i don't think that you'll be able to wake by using that capacitive buttons - this would essentially mean that your phone would never sleep.
and I'm almost positive that you can set up a profile in tasker to take care of the dimming instead of turning off the screen. In fact, you could probably set up most, if not all of these through various tasker profiles.
Not to mention how much battery it would waste polling the accelerometer to see if it's been moved.

actually those are all things that seem pretty mainstream from an OS derived from the most robust OS out there [linux]. Yes, those can all be done on android. Unfortunately there is a lack of programmers ... Especially to something that probably wont appeal to the ones we do have...
Also some kernel modifications will be necessary...
Im sorry i cant do this for you... If i could I would... Just because our phones can... and a couple of those things should already be with us...
Someone help us!!
Coming from the iphone. I loved the look of the evo... but I now miss the home button for this exact reason. Lol
The swiping of the captive keys sounds great. I doubt its doable though..
EDIT: ok, screebl is cool. And eliminates the need to press the power to put it to sleep... but it doesn't wake it up when picked up, so it solves half the problem.

Holy sh##, I wonder if thats what happened to mine then.... I had it for 3 hours, installed extended controls on it, turned the brightness all the way down and it died. Battery pull would get me the samsung screen but it would stop after the galaxy animation. I did a factory reset, still did it.
Is that about the same?
I figured that I just had a bad unit so I took it back to the store.
Edit. Just did a little research and we are not the only two this has happened to...not seeing a fix though...
If you have cwm installed or debug enabled you should just adb to your device and delete the offending widget app.

man, that sucks.
Happened to me too... If only we had the notification brightness slider the vibrant has. I had to take miner back too... Didn't know of cwm and I was smart enough to turn debugging mode off so no adb for me.

Awesome. Wonder why my factory reset didn't fix mine... Weird.
Bigger question... What do the application developers need to change too keep this from happening?
well the truth in my case is i downloaded a version off mediafire to see if i liked it before i donated and the thing was the version i downloaded had an error that to this day has been corrected. so if i wouldve just been legit from the beginning it wouldnt of happened

Extended trial eh? looked at extended controls change log, none on theirs yet. Guess I'll try power widget instead.
I was a victim of this as well with the extended controls widget. I emailed them and they didn't seem overly concerned, though to be fair there is a language barrier. I would have expected profuse apologies and a refund, at the very least.
I use the one called "Backlight!" but when I installed and saw the default value levels of 0,50,150,255 and saw a zero that instantly threw up a red flag. Before using widget I just edited the custom brightness levels to 34,65,103 which translates to 13%,25%,45%. Are there other devices where you could assign the toggle to a hard button? That's the only way I can see having a 0 default level on a device.
good day.
I submitted a ticket to the extended controls group and they just updated it after fixing the issue... Said it is now fixed and will be in the next release.
this has been posted in the forum, the phone still works, the display is just completely blacked out. 0% apparently meant different for the Samsung Fascinate phones than other Android phones. Power Control widget had updated their log a few days ago saying this was resolved in the last update here:
http://www.appbrain.com/app/power-control-plus-(widget)/com.siriusapplications.eclairwidgets
good thing the brand new version that i tried to pay for still blacked out my screen
Thank God I found this thread! Same here!! Power Strip. Was so depressed when I noticed I couldnt wake my screen back up after boot and locking it! Phew.... AWESOME PHONE!
Yea this happened to me as well and I didn't have de bugging on to use adb. Took it to the store they were like "we have never seem this happen before...sorry sure have this new one!" LoL
Sent from my rooted 1.2 voodoo Fascinate
Mine did it from a Ringer Profile app. I was trying to get my Fascinate to act more like a Blackberry in regards to notifications and such. All seemed well until I re3booted the phone. I went through 2 phones from this. The app did have functions for setting screen brightness for different profiles. Since I got that one solved, the phone's been great!

It's way better than I thought it would be. In the browser and want to turn the WiFi on? Push the Genius button and say "Turn WiFi on". Bang, it turns on. No need to go into settings. Same for bluetooth and GPS. Want to open an app? For the sake of example, push the Genius button and say "Show me Angry Birds". Bam, you're flinging and busting in seconds. The Genius button can do a lot more than the few little examples we've already seen. So handy.

I tried to give the genius button a go. Every time I click on it I have to wait for it to sync my contacts. Takes to long for me, maybe there is a setting I missed. Been using Vlingo. Now that is an awesome app.
I thought it was a gimmick, but I use hands free mode every day! I love being able to hold text conversations without having to even look at my phone.
Also, since I learned I can open any app with it, I've been using it more.
I had played with the genius button on my gf's myTouch Slide and wasn't impressed, but the new version on the MT4G is sweet! You should give it a shot.
BTW, as far as activating your contacts every time you open it. Hit menu while you are in the genius app, go to phonebook updates, configure and select manual. That way it will never do that again. You just have to remember to update it whenever you add a new contact.

This basically sums up my thoughts exactly. Once I started messing with it, I found the feature to be really useful. Using it in the car through a bluetooth headset is the best since I don't have to worry about texting while driving.
how do you actually get it to send a text through the genius button, i can get it to put in the recipients name and message but i actually have to press send, and cool didnt know it could do all the other functions like opening up apps and turning on wifi
You can tell it to turn on the flashlight too.

Listen, fellas. Look at the 4 options on the screen when pressing Genius and just try to memorize them. Then, say 'more options' for the next 4 options and memorize them. Those 8 options make for a very powerful set of options. For instance, you can change to handsfree mode, in which case all calls and messages are read aloud. Very cool. Can Vlingo do all this, or even Google Search? It seems Genius is very integrated into the system.
I use it all the time when I'm driving.. the hands free mode is awesome.. now only if there was a app that can drive my car to work in the morning while i sit back and chill.. this phone would be awesomer !! but till this magic app comes available then the phone is just awesome.

Genius button is going to come in handy this winter when I have gloves on outside waiting for the train. Can do stuff you'd otherwise need touch screen for like launching apps, changing settings. (Espresso doesn't let you use optical trackpad to select icons on home screens, tho LauncherPro does.)

Hey thanks for the tip on manual contact voice activation. Didn't think to hit menu in the Genius app.
When my wife got the Aria a couple of months ago, she loved it, and I figured I had finally brought her successfully into the age of smartphones. Now, she HATES it. The reason: The awful proximity sensor, that keeps turning the screen on while she's on the phone, resulting in her cheek hanging up the phone, or making calls while she's on a call.
I actually said to her "Just don't hold the phone that way", before laughing about making an iPhone 4 reference.
There has to be an app to disable the sensor, or configure it differently. I want her to love her phone and get back to playing Angry Birds.
Does your wife hold the phone in an unconventional way? I've never had any problems with the proximity sensor activating when the phone is placed to my cheek.
I hold my phone in my left hand with the speaker pressed close to my ear (the proximity sensor is in the top right corner of the phone) with the microphone end pulled ever so slightly from my cheek. If I want to check your phone, pull your phone from your ear horizontally from pull it down to view the screen.
As for settings, I would try this one:
Go to Settings > Call Settings > Always use Proximity and UNCHECK this option. I feel like this gives better results in regards to the sensor.
*Please note this setting is found under Cyanogenmod 7, and I'm not clear if this is found under the standard HTC Sense ROM.
Note:
Make your wife try hitting the LOCK button as soon she dials her number and hits talk. This should lock your screen and disable the proximity. (Again, im running Cyanogenmod 7 so i dont know if this is true for HTC Sense)

She holds it in the normal way, but since the sensor is on the top right, far from the speaker, and she has a tiny ear, she'd have to hold it in an unusual way to make it work.

Do you mean the power button? In that case, it definitely doesn't work in the stock ROM. I'm glad to know there's a setting in Cyanogenmod, so worst case I'll flash that. I didn't want to get her involved with flashing, since it isn't wife-friendly, but the poor proximity sensor placement, combined with the just stupid move of the Android devs assuming no one would need such a simple feature, isn't wife-friendly either, so I might as well.
I don't understand how on a phone this small, you don't immediately assume that you will have users smaller than average, and assume smaller ears. The sensor on my Rhodium is WAY closer to the center line, and it's more suited to bigger people.
I experience the same damn thing as well - it's annoying!!
I mostly have an issue with hitting the "Hold" button. What I did to fix this was to make the phone "left-handed" which moved the "Hold" button to the right-side and it seems I'm less likely to cheek-press it anymore.
This doesn't solve the issue with hitting the End Call button though. The funny thing is, is that it's hard to replicate too! I can literally hold the phone like 1cm away from my head and the screen won't come on - but once in a blue moon I will slightly adjust the phone on my ear while walking/driving and BAM - CALL ENDED! FRACKING ANNOYING!!!!
I have the opposite problem. I can't gang up without a fight to wake the phone up.

you need root and s-off for do this, and maybe custom recovery. read forum to know how to edit system partition on your phone. i can't write step-by-step manual becouse i don't speak in english =(
Sombody in the know this would be a sought after task.
I, like fmac, would appreciate if someone could give a step by step of how this procedure is done. I'm an Android user but HTC's are a little more touchy then what I'm used to. Rooting is not an issue for me, but whomever writes this up, may want to supply a link on that step for the folks just coming here for the first time. ARIAs have been out for a while and this problems fix is probably going to be heavily sought after.
Typically i don't ask for help but this time i'm going to throw it out there.
Every time i receive a SMS message my phone reads it out loud. Like "text message from 134-123-7654, _____________" no alert no nothing just reads it out loud.
I do not have "talk back", or "sound back" installed on my phone. And i've fixed permission and verified all of the settings under the SMS app and "voice input/output" in the main menu....
any other ideas.

1) What SMS app are you using?
2) Don't tell your friends about this problem or you are certain to get 100 ill timed text messages that say things like "I love gay porn!" and "Man, it sure is roomy in these pants!"
Off hand my first guess is to completely uninstall the SMS app, make sure all the directories that save settings are deleted too, and reinstall. That's the first thing I'd do. If that doesn't work....I dunno....call a priest for an exorcism?

I think i may of found the problem. There is a "cluzee reader" setting that is on by default. I turned it off, i'll see what happens.
Doing a fresh ROM install or even reverting back to a working save are guaranteed fixes. I figured you'd rather not have to reset everything though.
I'd bet the cluzee setting you found fixes it though.
agg! this started happening to me yesterday... i did recently install cluzee and llama, but last i looked the "reader" was set to "off" in cluzee.... and none of my "accessability" things are trned on..... i see that unsder <settings><voice input and output> under output that pico TTS is installed but "always use my settings" box is unchecked.... really annoying at work when i get a text.... thank goodness it wasnt a personal message or what not... aside from reloading everything - is there any other settign i should check. im useing the factory "messaging" app on my MTS4G...

Hi,
My Use for all screens stopped working. Anyone experience this or know how to fix it? It's checked in the One-handed operation option.
Thanks.

I haven't been able to get mine to work period. I have disabled and enabled the feature multiple time and I just can't get it to work.....
Use it all the time. Might be an issue with a specific version of the phone or if you have modified it somehow.

I have the T-Mobile version and it worked in the beginning, but now I can't get it to work
A shame since I was just getting used to it and how to gesture it on and off.
This seems to be a Samsung issue rather than a carrier fault.
(mine is unlocked and in use on AT&T)
Would it be advisable to contact Samsung directly?
Go to Settings>Device>Accessibility, and check under "Services". Having apps turned on there can break the one-handed function.
I have NiLS for lockscreen notifications, but it seems to run fine even when the service permission is turned off.

Bingo! Thank You barnabydog!
The good news: It worked! I turned off the offending app and I'm back in business!
The bad news: The offending app was Pebble (smartwatch)
A feature that is more useful to me than the one handed mode . . .
So then is this the sad state of affairs? I have to choose between my Mini-screen mode and my smart watch?
How did you know about this barnabydog?
is there another thread that discusses this issue?
Yes, but I was too lazy to search for it.
