Holy sh##, I wonder if thats what happened to mine then.... I had it for 3 hours, installed extended controls on it, turned the brightness all the way down and it died. Battery pull would get me the samsung screen but it would stop after the galaxy animation. I did a factory reset, still did it.
Is that about the same?
I figured that I just had a bad unit so I took it back to the store.
Edit. Just did a little research and we are not the only two this has happened to...not seeing a fix though...
If you have cwm installed or debug enabled you should just adb to your device and delete the offending widget app.

man, that sucks.
Happened to me too... If only we had the notification brightness slider the vibrant has. I had to take miner back too... Didn't know of cwm and I was smart enough to turn debugging mode off so no adb for me.

It persisted after a factory reset on mine. Offending app was all gone... Will be interesting to see if the op can get his working by doing that. Personally I just thought I had a bad phone.

Awesome. Wonder why my factory reset didn't fix mine... Weird.
Bigger question... What do the application developers need to change too keep this from happening?
well the truth in my case is i downloaded a version off mediafire to see if i liked it before i donated and the thing was the version i downloaded had an error that to this day has been corrected. so if i wouldve just been legit from the beginning it wouldnt of happened
I always keep adb on after this lesson...

Extended trial eh? looked at extended controls change log, none on theirs yet. Guess I'll try power widget instead.
I was a victim of this as well with the extended controls widget. I emailed them and they didn't seem overly concerned, though to be fair there is a language barrier. I would have expected profuse apologies and a refund, at the very least.
I use the one called "Backlight!" but when I installed and saw the default value levels of 0,50,150,255 and saw a zero that instantly threw up a red flag. Before using widget I just edited the custom brightness levels to 34,65,103 which translates to 13%,25%,45%. Are there other devices where you could assign the toggle to a hard button? That's the only way I can see having a 0 default level on a device.
good day.
I submitted a ticket to the extended controls group and they just updated it after fixing the issue... Said it is now fixed and will be in the next release.
this has been posted in the forum, the phone still works, the display is just completely blacked out. 0% apparently meant different for the Samsung Fascinate phones than other Android phones. Power Control widget had updated their log a few days ago saying this was resolved in the last update here:
http://www.appbrain.com/app/power-control-plus-(widget)/com.siriusapplications.eclairwidgets
good thing the brand new version that i tried to pay for still blacked out my screen
Thank God I found this thread! Same here!! Power Strip. Was so depressed when I noticed I couldnt wake my screen back up after boot and locking it! Phew.... AWESOME PHONE!
Yea this happened to me as well and I didn't have de bugging on to use adb. Took it to the store they were like "we have never seem this happen before...sorry sure have this new one!" LoL
Sent from my rooted 1.2 voodoo Fascinate
Mine did it from a Ringer Profile app. I was trying to get my Fascinate to act more like a Blackberry in regards to notifications and such. All seemed well until I re3booted the phone. I went through 2 phones from this. The app did have functions for setting screen brightness for different profiles. Since I got that one solved, the phone's been great!

If you comfortable with a linux shell, you can mount the system partition as rw, and delete the htclockscreen app from /system/app (if you even think about asking me for help, just use the patch and save us both some wasted time). However feel free to email/msg/call at home at 1am Unheard for help, since he wanted to point out the command line procedure.

applying wallpaper to the nexus lock screen
hey fantastic patch by the way! thanks so much for the hard work. i do prefer the nexus lock screen however is the transparency the only option? i tried to apply the wall via menu/wallpaper/lockscreen...says wallpaper applied etc but doesnt show when the device is locked. is this a limitation of the initial root? would it be advisable to go to v3 of the 2.1 root? again fantastic work much appreciated...
v0.3.0 is advisable, wont fix your problem. Will look into it after I have a break from the phone for a bit.
One other bug ive seen with the wallpaper is that it does not allow you to shut off or snooze your alarm so I had to restart or appkill to get it to shut off

By using that nandroid backup you made, right before trying it?
Didn't make one? Probably have to reflash.
Im good backup didnt work at first because Im guessing the phones power was low. Right after I posted had put my wifes phone on the pc to charge and the nandroid back up went through.
I'm probably in the minority that actually enjoys the lock screen more than live wallpapers, but this patch is great. Other than a few small visual issues, this is perfect. I hated the Sense lock screen. Great work jcase!
installed it and love it only issue i have with it would be the alarm wont snooze...will you be working on that or is this just something we would have to work around? other than that its a great extra
The issue is in the HTC Alarm, and Sense. Use another alarm clock.
Love it. Nice job.

Gentle Alarm works much better.
thanks for this!
was a great addition to my theme
I love the Nexus lock screen it keeps me from pocket dialing. I wish I could set a lock screen background though.
I really like this lockscreen and it works great except if i put my phone into airplane mode. When it comes out of airplane mode, the lockscreen continues to say 'No Sim Card', display the 'emergency call' and no longer show the battery charge. Rebooting the phone fixes it. Perhaps the CDMA Nexus One lock screen will fix this problem.
Yea, so ive brought this up before and i see the power button still being the first mechanical button to break over time. Mainly because you have to press it constantly just to use the phone or wake the phone up to use.
So heres some ideas, correct me or critique them, and reply if theres already good alternatives/apps out there.
I know some of these ideas can drain the battery, but work with me on this...
- When an sms/mms is received i want the screen to auto turn on. Windows mobile did this from what i remember and it was a novelty.
- Be able to turn the screen on by swiping one or two of the lower capacitive buttons instead of pressing the power button.
- Have the screen dim to its lowest setting instead of fully turning off. (dunno how battery draining this can be) Windows mobile did this as well.
- Have an app monitor the motion sensor in the phone to where if you pick the phone up from a flat surface (horiz position) the screen auto turns on.. and maybe an extra option of having the screen turn on if theres a shake or jostle (of course you could adjust the sensitivity). But having this app running in the background all the time could be draining. I mean shiii.. the phone knows when youre in call and if your phone is up to your head so why cant we have that feature to turn on the screen instead of using the power button.
I would pay good money for someone to develop this. An all in one app that includes all those options. I'll do the graphic work if need be.
Most of that seems a little out there and un-doable, but I do know that Handcent has an option to turn on your phone when a sms/mms is received with a small box in the center of the screen for a quick reply. Hope that helps a little.
^^^ beat me to it.
if you use smspopup or handcent, they both have option for the screen to come on when you get a new text message.
they also popup a box to read the message and have the option to quick reply or go to the messaging app. you can turn this off tho and just have the screen wake up for any where from 10 seconds to like 5 minutes.

How so? Phone turns quiet when picked up im sure it can be set to turn on when picked up. SMS as someone mentioned, handcent does. Apparently "screebl" does the screen turn on, testing now.
you can use an app called no lock that will allow you to use the volume buttons to wake the phone, i don't think that you'll be able to wake by using that capacitive buttons - this would essentially mean that your phone would never sleep.
and I'm almost positive that you can set up a profile in tasker to take care of the dimming instead of turning off the screen. In fact, you could probably set up most, if not all of these through various tasker profiles.
Not to mention how much battery it would waste polling the accelerometer to see if it's been moved.

actually those are all things that seem pretty mainstream from an OS derived from the most robust OS out there [linux]. Yes, those can all be done on android. Unfortunately there is a lack of programmers ... Especially to something that probably wont appeal to the ones we do have...
Also some kernel modifications will be necessary...
Im sorry i cant do this for you... If i could I would... Just because our phones can... and a couple of those things should already be with us...
Someone help us!!
Coming from the iphone. I loved the look of the evo... but I now miss the home button for this exact reason. Lol
The swiping of the captive keys sounds great. I doubt its doable though..
EDIT: ok, screebl is cool. And eliminates the need to press the power to put it to sleep... but it doesn't wake it up when picked up, so it solves half the problem.

screebl may be of help.
So after running rooted Gingerbread for a while now I've noticed a few bugs and was wondering if I was the only one.
First thing is Swype. Yeah yeah, I know everyone has that one. But after uninstalling the old apk with Root Explorer and then installing the beta everything initially worked fine. But my first reboot after the install of the beta Swype force closes every time it trys to open. Uninstall and reinstall doesn't fix the problem. Weird, but not a huge deal to me as I didn't use it that much anyway.
Second, and the most annoying thing I noticed, is the back lit buttons stop lighting up after a certain period of time. The soft buttons under the screen and the slide out keyboard still work, they just don't light up. Rebooting fixes the problem.
Third is the built in battery manager seems to have some issues as well. Although it seems to inherently do a better job of saving battery life than in previous versions of Android. On my phone it sometimes won't come out of it's no-syncing state and allow data usage. Other times it will allow data usage after waking back up, but data seems extremely slow. Again a reboot fixes the issue.
And the last thing I noticed today. Although I haven't had any noticeable signal issues or dropped calls, I was getting drastically different signal readings sitting right beside a guy with a DROIDX at work. As in he was showing full 3G service and I was only showing one bar of 1X and like a -100 RSSI. I realize it's two different phones, but my understanding was that the X and the original 2 were pretty similar.
Just wondering if anyone else has noticed any of these things or if I'm the only one with some bugs? Or if anyone has any ideas about a solution for any of the issues?
FYI I'm far from an expert, but I'm not a complete Noob either. Although I don't have a ton of posts I've been hacking my cell phone since the days of my Razr and have had and rooted three Android phones to this point.
Anyway, thanks a bunch guys!

Only problem that I have is that using Launcherpro when the home screen is rotated 90 degrees (widescreen-ish) and then rotated back the wallpaper gets a "letterbox" effect similar to what you see on TV's. Haven't looked into it too much, probably just an issue with Launcherpro.

The backlight issue bugs me to no end. I try to figure out how to restore it without rebooting but no success so far.
One other issue is that I can't access the multitouch keyboard. I disabled it because I really never used it, but then I felt like using it one day and there is no place to check to use it. I have SwiftKey installed as my only 3rd party keyboard
I'm having an issue with ridiculously low volume on phone calls......any fixes out there because it's hard to use your phone, as a, you know, phone, when you can't hear the other person on the line. I may have to SBF back and wait for the official 2.3 if it doesnt improve.
Rebooting takes care of the call volume problem.
Rooted Droid 2 running Froyo 2.2 with the 2.3.20 update
Yeah I had the low call volume too, I think everyone did. It went away after the first reboot.
As fas as the games disappearing. Someone mentioned Bejeweled, that's one of the ones on mine that keeps disappearing. There are a few that do it, I don't remember exactly which ones, but Bejeweled and Stupid Zombies are two that I remember always disappear.

Hmmm, who knows. Even though all of mine weren't disappearing, just certain ones, it got annoying to me. I just deleted the shortcuts from my screen and pull up the games from the launcher now.
It is strange that its only certain games, and that we all seem to have the same ones disappearing.

Hi all...
I'm turning to XDA for help as you guys seem to know everything
I have an unrooted Droid X that I have modified with Desktop visualizer, smooth calendar, a few other apps. At some point during the mods, it stopped ringing when called. Now sound works... and the phone announces the network then vibrates when called, so it says "Verizon Wireless" and then vibrates... but I can't get the ringer to come back.
I've removed everything I added. I have rebooted the phone multiple times... still no ringer.
Any thoughts on what else to try?
Monty
in my experience its better to root and rom ur device, instead of using apps. just my opinion. u might havt to do a full sys restore.
Sent from my DROIDX using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
While true, if I damage the phone while rooting, I'm screwed and have to buy a new phone. Trying to avoid rooting. Just want the phone back to normal.
Ok, have reloaded to factory. Now will do updates and see what one causes the problem. Will notify here.
I wouldn't actually consider it modding if you installed some apps. But as stated before, it would be a good idea to do a system restore

Do a system restore. On a side note using Z4 root I'd say there is almost a 0% chance on any damage. Believe me when I say this it is nearly impossible to brick a device. Nearly all the threads on here about people complaining about a bricked device are solved easily and the devices aren't really bricked.
Ok, have reloaded everything but Smooth Calendar and I'm still good. I want to load it but am worried it will take me right back where I was... is there another decent app that widgets the calendar in a see-thru mode that anyone is using on their Droid X?

I use CalWidget. Its minimalistic and simple, has a transparent background if wanted, and you can customize the colors, how it syncs, etc. Simple and fairly versatile.

Thanks all for the advice.
I did reinstall smooth calendar and all seems well. Strange that it acted up before... can't really blame any one app though.
As towards calling it 'modding'... of course you can't, but my phone still looks better than straight factory ones...
And I might root it, I am still a little hesitant though, once I get more time maybe I can look into it and then give it a shot.
Thanks again!

Easiest way to keep checking is to advance your phone's clock ahead one day then try again. Just remember to turn the auto clock detection setting back on.

Not the live message, I have that. There is a gif option on the keyboard from other carriers. For some reason AT&T left it out.
In developers options there is the ability to change Bluetooth Audio Codec to SBC (default) to Aptx, Ldac, etc. If you change that it doesnt stick and it resets itself to SBC. Bummer.
Also the only option that does seem to seem concerning Bluetooth and Developers Options is Bluetooth AVRCP Version. AVRCP 1.4 is default but changing to AVRCP 1.6 seems to stick.
Meant to post this last night. Here's screenshots of my for full use of the OTA Oreo. I'm a teacher on spring break so I messed around with it a lot yesterday getting all my settings and apps set up.

Don't know what's worse... badges with wrong numbers or badges that don't come on at all. I get none at all. And I even factory reset before I took the update. I got no clue, even after spending tons of time digging through settings
