My phone screen would turn on to show the clock only over a black background when let's say I throw in on the bed or put down "not gently". Does this happen to everyone or is this a feature Google added?

yes, you can turn off that feature... Settings-Display-Turn off Ambient Display.
that's cool that this setting can be turned off, but with the setting turned on mine does it without even moving. I set it down, it does the screen/clock thing, turns off, then just keeps doing it what seems randomly. Anyone figure have that problem?
An app could be causing that behaviour. In my case I found it was LightFlow, I uninstalled it and no more strange behaviour from the Ambient Display.

I get this too! I want ambient display set to on (so when I pick the phone up, I can quickly see the time, without unlocking it) but I don't understand why when it is flat and still, there is this random, intermittent screen clock thing

I had the same issue with Lightflow. Using Light Manager now.
I've noticed having notifications will have the screen coming on every few seconds even though the phone is not being moved. Had this happen on my Nexus 6 as well.

I noticed this when I was out Friday night at a dark bar as I was lowering my brightness so I wouldn't be blinded by the screen while texting. I lowered the brightness all the way down, and the backlight essentially turned off; at first, I thought the phone turned off sporadically so I turned it back on...but it turned out that the screen was on, but the backlight was off.
After some more investigating, it seems like this is a hardware issue as I did a complete hard reset and the problem persists. Strange, but my replacement should be shipping sometime soon. Has this happened to anyone else?

Accidentally gave you a thanks Lol. Mine doesn't do this, when I go to the wick settings, tap brightness, and slide it all the way down it just gets dim, doesn't turn off.

Yes, but I didn't realize this since I was in a really dark bar. When I got home, I played around with it and noticed that sliding the brightness all the way down to 0 resulted in the backlight turning off, and then the screen turning off within seconds. Very strange behavior.
Just something that I wanted people to be aware of so they can get their units swapped out.

Nope, stock everything. Locked bootloader, unrooted.
The screen actually doesn't turn off I found out. The backlight is off completely, but the screen stays on for the preset amount of time.
My display will dim down to half of the brightness it was set at and will not brighten back up. To get it to brighten back up I either have to turn the display off and back on or touch the brightness slider. Any ideas on how to get this to stop? Display is set to standard, Adapt display is unchecked. Everything is turn off with Smart Screen. Auto Brightness is unchecked. I am running NC2
This is super annoying!
Happens to me too. I also am not able to turn off or restart my phone. It gets to a point where the menu button and back button are lit up and the blue led is lit at the top with a black screen but stays that way until i do a battery pull. All this started after going to nc2. Tried different roms and didnt change a thing.

My biggest source of frustration right now is how inconsistent Ambient Display is. I suppose I was spoiled with the Moto X because it worked without fail all the time. On stock android Ambient Display just sort of comes on when it feels like it, but it's even more inconsistent on this phone than it was on my Nexus 6. It's to the point that I don't even rely on it, I just go straight for the fingerprint reader or power button because otherwise, I end up just looking at a black screen 98% of the time.
This applies both to when I have notifications and don't. Sometimes, I'll pick it up and it'll show me the time. Other times, nothing. I pull it out of my pocket with a notification, notification light blinking and everything and the screen never comes on until I hit the power button or scan my finger.
That is frustrating. I was hoping to notification on the home screen "light up" like they do on the iPhone. I find this feature useful when I'm driving. Are you saying you have the feature enabled and it works intermittently?
Mine hardly ever works like it should...

Hopefully a software update will fix the issue.
Same here. Coming from a Turbo I miss it...I wish we could use the proximity sensor to activate it...
Same here. I hope some custom rom may bring moto x like active display.
Ambient Display is totally fubar on my 6P; no notifications whatsoever, the phone is sitting on my desk, and it just lights on and on and on wihout any reason.
That's bizarre...mine works 90% of the time as expected.

Have a feeling you have an app installed that controls the led, ex lightflow or light manager. If so disable said app and this will stop happening.
At least that was the problem in my case..

I dont have any LED control apps installed and mine does exactly what wewewi999 is saying. I will hear it and look, nothing happens. If I pick it up, it ONLY activates Ambient Display with it is completely vertical. If it goes away and I want Ambient Display to activate again, forget it. I basically have to do the twisting motion that I used to do to activate the camera on the Moto phones to get the Active Display to turn on.
Currently, I have an unread notification. Ambient Display activated instantly, then pulsed once after about 5 seconds. Then pulsed again after about 10 seconds. Still unread, it has stopped pulsing altogether? The next notification, it didnt pulse at all. Random.

Coming from a Droid Maxx I am so used to just pulling my phone out off my pocket or lightly nudging it when it's sitting on the desk and having the time (and any recent notifications) show up without having to do anything else. With the Nexus 6p, just as others have said, it's so random that I can't even figure out how it's supposed to work. Surely this is not what they intended. I really hope they can and will fix it.
Seriously missing Moto!
Mine seems a little better with the notification led off. Can't say its perfect as I'm used to Moto's awesome implementation, but its definitely better without the notification led on for me.
I think it's Doze. My Nexus 6 was very sensitive until I updated to Marshmallow. It still responds reliably when I pick it up, but it is less sensitive to nudging and of course notifications are delayed because of how Doze works.

Mine wasn't working well, so I installed AcDisplay. It now works much better. Not sure if it is the app or the setting that is making it work, but it is now working well enough to make me feel like compares to my old Droid Maxx.
I realised that the tempered glass screen protector I was using (which had no cutout for proximity sensor) was the trouble maker. I knew the protector was already causing trouble while receiving/disconnecting calls but had it for the time being until I got a correct one. Now that I removed the screen protector the ambient display works flawlessly!

Yeah my screen protector has the cut out too and I've never really had a problem with ambient display. Tried a Moto x Pure before and it pretty much works just as good.

I tried AcDisplay yesterday and its useless if you use the fingerprint scanner to unlock. AcDisplay is just another loop to jump thru to unlocking the phone. I will admit though, it DOES work MUCH better than Ambient Display. Much more sensitive.
So far I hard reset my phone 2x to get it working because my 2nd screen won't stay on after main screen is off. I do even get notifications. I have the settings to stay on. .. not sure what's going in with phone...even my quick charging stopped working. Miss my note 4

Make sure you're not covering the ambient light sensor on your phone. It's right in the upper left hand corner next to the front camera. (To test, with the main screen off and second screen on, If you cover the sensor with your finger on a normally working V20, after a few seconds the second screen should shut off.)
So my guess is if you're sure your Settings are set up correctly, you probably have a faulty or miscalibrated ambient light sensor on your device that's shutting the second screen off, and you should either find a way to re-calibrate the sensor or get your device replaced.

Same here, what's latest update?
Hi man, I've been searching thru forums all day. Basically, I have the same issues, 1. Not fast charging (only usb-charging) 2. Second screen off when screen is off (despite the settings are set not to)
I'm on the edge of hard factory reset with very limited hopes and my ultimate guess is this is a motherboard issue.
Have you been able to fix yours?
Second screen stays off.!
Yesterday, I was working to upgrade the apps, and install some missing bloated apps by LG Electronics ltd. through the web server, i.e. apkmirror and I don't know exactly what happened. My LG V20 (LS997) Second screen stays off just apparently showing with dark ambient display that is useless at all. The display only shows with media contents by setting up with 'More' as well, and not work even all.
Fixed!! I had the same problem when every time I enabled second screen it would disappear. After looking everywhere I was able to fix it by going to the battery saver settings and pressing on the 'battery saver' option under 'power saving'. Then press 'edit mode'. Make sure 'block use of second screen' is unchecked. That should stop it from being disabled.
Is anyone else having an issue with the AOD randomly turning itself off? I keep mine on during the day, but at times I don't see it on my screen, so I'll go into the settings and see that it's set to "off". I can't figure out what's turning it off.

The "always on screen" turns itself off when in your pocket. It uses the proximity sensor to do this. If there is a problem with your proximity sensor then it may turn off randomly.

I don't think it's the proximity sensor since he is saying he goes into settings and AOD is completely off.
Do you have it set to turn off at certain times of the day?
Check your on/off times, too.
In display settings, "always on display"
"daily timeout" - see if that is set to turn off display when you don't want it turned off?
Can also turn brightness up. I did because outside in the sun it is impossible to see.
Also found in "battery saver" another setting. "Block Use of Always On Display"
Might have this ON?
