Hi all,
some time ago some people got their device (bootloader) unlocked but could not recreate this unlock because the original creator @jcase) could not release it for legal issues. The problem was that the DMCA would not permit the unlock of a tablet, now apparently the things have changed. The US Library of Congress has updated their Library adding wearable devices and TABLETS.
Now the problem is that these changes take 1 year to take effect. Can anyone confirm this?
Thanks
P.S.: @jcase were still looking at you...

I have no plans to release anything new, outside of htc and mayabe moto, for a while. Working on something bigger.
Most people are still on 3.2.8 and I'm guessing its patched in the newer versions. I guess that other developers in the forum can help if @jcase doesn't have time to release his unlock, but probably at least give some hints and maybe someone else could achieve it similar to you.

Please DO NOT contact me about this. I have other things going on, I won't be releasing it, nor assisting others.
I'm not sure what the point of this thread is...a bootloader unlock was already released.

Let's close this thread and give @jcase a break. Over the years he has been a tremendous resource to the community for which many of us owe a debt of gratitude. He has now moved on to other pursuits which is great. It was reasonable to ask; the answer came quick and was decisive.
The solutions provided by @ggow fill in most of the gaps. Sure, everyone would love an unlocked bootloader but pure Nexus/cm11 on a locked (and now discontinued) hdx is pretty sweet deal! A far cry from the balky Frankenkindles created by layering Google Services on FireOS.
Agreed
Unless you screwed up like me and now have a Saturn Device. That said, from the 5.0 beta Amazon sent out, it looks very close to the stock android skin. THAT I am personally fine with.
The main question is, what is jcase working on...

I sought the RUU for HTC European M8 but was not released.
Many RUU have not been released. @LlabTooFeR told me that he doubts that will come out.
I think that if we join in protest against HTC maybe something could change.
What do you think?
I HAVE SENT AN E-MAIL TO HTC, WHERE TO ASK QUESTIONS for RUU release.
If you agree you also send an email to HTC EMAIL CONTACT

Hmm..... I can't quite read your post. Perhaps you could make the text a little larger.
Not going to work, seen so many of these type of threads before. Save your valuable time and use it for something useful like your family for instance (assuming you have one)
These kind of threads usually (read usually carefully) fade away in time because HTC probably won't respond anyway to your (our) request.

Sad thing is HTC doesn't care we still buy their devices and the only way for a consumer to speak is with their wallet

If you are S-off, they are a great way to quickly (so to speak) reset everything to stock. Yes, you can do all that manually, but sometimes you just want to hit the big red button and make it all go away. That is where an RUU comes in handy.

Yes, I don't have problems to return completely stock without RUU, I write a guide for this in my Italian forum also....but a RUU can be useful for particular reason or some inexperienced people(or for who can't be S-OFF)
I paid €500,00 for m8, why HTC can't released RUU to me?

It matters not how much you paid for your device. The fact of the matter is when you buy a device you're buying it "as is". If you leave your device "as is" you have little need for an RUU (note I said little need, not no need), as you are free to update officially. It's not HTC's responsibility to provide you a way to return to stock when/if you choose on your own free will to modify your device. You know what you're doing when you do it and you know the consequences of doing it, again not HTC's problem. The fact is you do not require an RUU to have a fully operating, functioning device just the way the manufacturer intended. So what you really want is an extra service, an extra benefit that was never guaranteed or implied by the manufacturer.
It's okay to want this. It's even okay to request it, but what comes off entitled and kind of naive is when you demand that they give you their proprietary update utility that you didn't really pay for. They never told you you were going to get one. Never implied you were going to get one. Yet you demand that they hand one over. That's not a very good attitude to have and it's not the kind of feedback that companies like HTC typically respond to.
This doesn't mean I don't believe that they should provide them. The fact is I do believe they should, but they are not REQUIRED to by any means. As a matter of fact, HTC does provide RUUs at carrier request. They typically do not provide RUUs for is the generic WWE/international software and firmware. For example here in the United States, HTC US has posted official RUUs for AT&T, T Mobile, and Sprint with only one major carrier, Verizon, being left out. Verizon is left out because they request HTC not post RUUs for their software as it contains, again, proprietary software (eg the NFL Mobile app which they pay a hefty sum for every year and other cross licensing/marketing partners, and software). Incidentally, proprietary software protection is also the reason why Verizon does not allow official bootloader unlock. Most of what HTC does are determined by their software and carrier partners not any sinister plot to keep you away from updates.
I have inquired with HTC already a while ago and they told me they'd forward it to their dev department for investigating if it was possible to hand out an official RUU. The fact that they never got back to me means it's a "no" for GSM international. Else we would have a download already now.
They won't change their mind for a handful of XDA users, as I was able to experience myself way back during the OneS time. I had 800+ people backing my case and that is about nothing in their eyes.
In fact, I was told to my face by some HTC manager people that they won't do very much for XDA users except what they offer with htcdev.com - which they consider a lot already. Oh and tolerating but not welcoming unofficial leaks of shipped material.
Never will they tolerate beta material. People leaking such risk a lot of trouble with them.

Hi guys. About a year and a half ago, this community did something amazing. I had an engineering version of the ativ S, and this community put together the money to buy me a new one, while i sent the one in my possession to a developer here to XDA. From that day, we never heard back. Do we have any news/breakthrough or any kind of report on the work heathcliff is doing?
I know Heathcliff74 has managed to fully root his phones (both Ativ and Lumia, I think), but I think he's still working on a way to install the hack on non-engineering phones / without using JTAG. I haven't asked for a progress report recently; we don't usually jostle each other that way when working on something.
GoodDayToDie,
The new Windows Insider app might be the key for non-JTAG hacking I've successfully injected some registry keys already, and am working on setting the interop caps to third party (maybe even ALL of them? Who knows...).

There is work being done behind the scenes all the time. Usually nothing is released uncomplete though.
I have been working very hard. And I have made progress. In fact, I've been working for almost two years on this. I cannot tell any details right now. I can only tell that I am working very hard on a release right now. Please don't ask for ETA's. You will know when it is ready.

I am not asking for ETA; but i dont understand the secrecy. Would not find it more helpful to share your findings as you make them so that you might use the mighty insight and peer-review of this community? also, at least say" hey i'm working on this thing which i think it's cool" would had been sufficed. Also soon all your finding are going to be meaningless, since w10 is going to be out there and a lot of your bug/entry point might be closed at that point; and the device does not update to a newer version, so it will mean 0 usefulness out of what we set to do 2 years ago.

The problem is that MS would know instantly what is being done and how to patch stuff. Years of hacking could become useless if something gets patched just because something was written here. About WP10, we'll see and hope for the best (for us on this forum)

First of all, I'm not working alone. There are a bunch of people I exchange ideas with. But that is a bit more private than this forum. To make a fully working hack, we need a complete chain of hacks to get there. And if these hacks are discussed, the vulnerabilities would be fixed, before we can complete the chain and that would make the research meaningless.
In the WP7 era, I created a lot of hacks. At that time I was very active on XDA and twitter. Because I also wanted to give proper support on those hacks. Currently I have no release ready for WP8 (or WP10). So, why should I write about partial, possible hacks here? It would only give people the impression that I am here to collect "Thanks" and getting attention or ego-boost or something. And people would be asking when something is ready, which is impossible to predict. I have literally dozens of possible hacks that turned out to be dead-ends. That would only have resulted in disappointment and disbelieve. I have done a lot of research now. And it paid off. I'm working on an implementation now. But it is quite complex, so it will take a bit of time. Have patience.
Don't worry about Windows 10 for Phones. My work will still be valuable.
Ciao,
Heathcliff74
@sireangelus, please try to understand the reason for the secrecy. All that matters at this point is that work is in progress and every hack in progress doesn't need to be public knowledge due to the fact that it would be a big blow if they were patched. Heathcliff74 is right on this one.
I patiently await for the return of the winmo6.X wp7.8 hspl custom rom flashing hacking days

Sounds very intriguing So even if you'll have working hack for WP8/WP10, the good idea to keep it in secret until WP10 handsets will hit the market.
Ok, I was running super v20, and all was good, then I was bored and saw A-O OREO was out and upgraded.

yes, they are both ARB 1 so you can flash back to super v20. Just don't flash to anything that is ARB 0.

I wanted to go back too. The update created a host of problems; Podcast playback failures. Messenger+ went completely wonky and failed sooo many times. Frozen screens during videos. Several Apps would crash on a regular basis.
I'm not very good on much more than the basics of how to do some of the things you genius contributors do (not a dig, I truly respect you), can do and advise us on, so I go to the support teams at the stores, finding the most geeky of the Tech Crew for help, and if necessary, I'll go to two stores (Verizon) ... and in both stores, neither tech guy could find a fix and noted the LG V20 was notably having issues with the update ... even after a full Factory Reset.
After spending close to 4 hours on the phone with Verizon's Tech Team, (I sat at my desk while doing other work so not a total loss of time), I was able to get an "additional" Verizon credit of $200 off the upgrade to the newest V40 ThinQ ... making my purchase price $449. In addition, there's little to no development on the V20 anymore as it's reached the end-of-life-cycle (... I hate how fast these phones are becoming end-of-life-cycle!) ... so I upgraded.
I'm not suggesting everyone spend the money to upgrade, but I really understand why they want to.

The bolded bit i don't get. a FDR should reset everything back and you build like new. All app problems should go away unless they weren't compatible with Oreo which at this late date is unlikely.
Why downgrade, I am over the moon at having got Oreo in my VS995 especially as I got the Oct security patch almost immediately. Also surprised as I live in the UK and the update arrived OTA.
Only thing I have found is that there does not appear to be a way to enable the Fingerprint setting, although my fingerprint still works.
So you wouldn't upgrade again? Bc right now I'm exactly the same. Super satisfied with nougat and mk2000 kernel but actually I wanna give oreo a try. Was at least battery drain better on oreo?
Considering that our project that shall not be mentioned was successful, I was wondering about what can be expected in terms of custom roms for this device. I don't know if ASUS released decent sources for the Ze533KL, so can we expect an eventual daily driver release or shall we expect more experimental builds? Of course I'm not asking for ETA, just wondering about what can actually be achieved for this phone.
The thing I really wanted to have with this phone is some kind of burn-in protection (which is implemented in LOS as far as I know). My phone is still under warranty, and I can already see marks of the keyboard and other icons when displaying a white image.
Since the actual thread was closed, maybe this one could be used as a bulletin board for any new unfoldings.
Cheers.
sure thing, I also thought about creating new thread where we can inform each other about our initiative. I believe that McFy is waiting for his unit to arrive. Then there will be LOS hopefully. I'm rooting for him
As far as Lineage OS features I think it is OK to ask a question here and wait for some research and answer about it.
Let's keep our fingers crossed
"Now what?" is a fantastic name for the thread.
Exactly my feeling.
Ironicaly, XDA killed the iniatitive on the day it reached its goal. So, there was no reason at all to do what was done.
About a custom ROM for the device, I have no preferences. Whatever suits the developer is good for me as long as the final product is stable and runs well.

Oh well, don't wanna jump the gun here, but it seems like the dude took the money and spent on something else, or he's been really busy since then, as he no longer even commented on any xda posts.
In any case, It's a shame. Now we know why XDA doesn't allow group funding for this kind of thing. Not asking for eta is something, but you can't volunteer to develop for a device, take the money and disappear and expect people not to distrust you.
My advice for all others that contributed would be to next time buy a phone with a greater dev community, and never donate if there's no ongoing project.
Really hope I'm wrong here, please @McFy, show up and prove me wrong.

I don't think you're jumping the gun - it's almost three months since @McFy last posted to us that he obtained the phone and even his github project named "android_device_asus_zenfone3_zoom" (which I presume this was for) doesn't appear to have any work done on/to it whatsoever - I don't think it's unreasonable to have gotten some kind of status update within that time, even if it's negative.
Without knowing what happened for certain I will unfortunately have to think the obvious.

I sincerely hope that you guys won’t get mad at me.

First off, I am sorry to hear of your gf's health problems - and I truly mean that. I hope that she recovers and you don't need to tell us any more information because that is personal.
Next - the heads-up is absolutely appreciated. Thank you! I do hope you can also see from our point of view how it was looking to us and understand that we were getting puzzled. Now we know why.
Thank you again.

Yes I ofc can see from your point of view and that’s why I went back on the forums, I got emails and more so I realized I got the phone since enough time for you to think I might have forgotten you,
Thanks for your message it’s really appreciated!
So, another month's passed. Any news?

Is source code for a soon to be patched gpu exploit and I have a background in cyber security however exploit code is not my strongest area however I can clearly see that it makes sys calls from user issued gpu commands via a attacker controlled instructions table anyone know if it's possible to obtain root through this on a 8uw (I know I know I'm bad with impulsive behaviors when I'm stranded without a phone that's a completely different topic) anywho if someone can verify that it's possible and maybe instruct the last few steps that would need to be taken to make it happen I'd happily throw a bounty your way

Someone had already found a way to unlock verizon. There's a thread in these forums updated today with folks showing unlocked status on UW

I can confirm unlocked bootloader status on Verizon op8 5G UW. Been unlocked since early November. Running lineage 18.1 with no issues as a daily driver. WideVine L1 also.
