Anyone knows if this is a hardware or software feature? I read that Snapdragon 810 devices would be compatible and as such, was curious if the 6p would get the feature in a future update
No it won't, the sensor is made by a company that Samsung almost bought. It isn't a qcom sense id sensor.

With the latest update of googles my tracks now ant+ support was added for external sensors, like footpods, heart rate monitors etc.
Anyone have an idea if the defy has the appropriate chip in it that will enable this in the future? Have read so far in a very early forum statement from motorola that this would not work but then again what customer support tells you is not always the whole truth Both the TI omap 3610 and 3630 does according to their product sheet indicate to support the needed wilink chip. Ericsson have just last week activated ant+ support in all their current android phones so it does seem possible to do things like this, if the manufacturer wants off course

I'm also looking for this, there are some indications that the chipset supports this hardware wise, below is a comment quoted from Jollo at the Motorola developer forum:
"Maybe you know about the first attempts to ANT+ sensor usage in android phones by HTC (ANT+ could be seen as de-facto standard for sports activities sensors like foot- or heart-pace). They used an ordinary Legend which was just flashed to enable the ANT+-capabilities of the TI WiLink radio chipset.
In case the Defy will use such chipset (specs don't name this, but even WiLink Gen. 6 should be adequate), this phone as one of the rare ruggedized ones running Android could become an outstanding sports-device. this is just an idea. I have to say I do not know to much details about Android driver programming but is there perhaps a chance to port/take the driver from the MOTOACTV device.

According to Qualcomm, SnapDragon 810 is not compatible, while 2016 processors (820/821 ...) it is.

I'm a little bit confused, because I've read this on another website:
According to Qualcomms website the Snapdragon 810 (like in my Nexus 6P) should support Galileo. But no doubt they'll refuse to release the necessary driver or code so people have to upgrade to a newer phone if they want it.

Galileo and Gps uses the same frequency for L1 band so on hardware side it should be OK. Now for the proprietary drivers is another story..
Are there other receivers already giving good positionning? Last time I check there weren't all spacracfts launched ? They had stability problems on their clocks.
Are they any news on snapdragon 810 support for galileo? It will be possible to make it work? too bad that Qualcomm says first it supports galileo and then only new processors will support it.
If there is not a problem with hardware I am pretty sure someone can force them as they advertise 810 as galileo supported. Usually what you advertise you must bring to buyers.
Here in this forum we discussed a lot about the Android upgrade issue and the facts, that we don't get the source codes. I thought it's Xiaomi's fault, other say it's Mediatek's fault. I still don't know. I just know that I want to get a new phone instead of that crappy device. So I checked for alternatives and discovered the Umi Z.
It looked interesting and not too expensive but when I read a review there was a point saying something about Android Updates. The Umi Z has MM and on their social media or website they announced, that the Umi Z will get an update to Nougat, but the problem is, that Mediatek didn't release the source codes yet to allow them to update their Android.
So that sounds very familiar and weird. Is Mediatek really so obsessed with their source codes and why do they do that? I mean, what do they lose? This kind of behaviour would rather make people stay away from Mediatek devices. But I guess there are enough people just happy without custom roms, updates and source codes.
Can it be, that Umi just said that to blame someone else for lack of updates? The difference between Umi and Xiaomi is that Umi has a normal Android surface and not an own like Miui. But at least they keep their customers up-to-date, inform them and show interest in updating. And they announced, that they plan an update for April. I don't know how they can be confident but I wouldn't wonder if they won't get their update in April, May or June.
So in conclusion, I think it's the fault of both, Xiaomi and Mediatek and I want to stay away from both in future. I'm thinking about getting a Sony, or if I get a chinese brand again then a Snapdragon and for sure no Xiaomi!
The answer to this is we are dealing with "fabless" companies i.e. they do not actually make anything themselves but outsource to companies that do.
It is the miriad of screens, sensors etc, that cause the problems with Android upgrades, not the use of MTK or Qualcomm SoC. MTK does release source code (occassionally) - users are disappointed when they find that it is almost useless because it does not include vendor blobs for their specific hardware platform - that is the fault of the vendor - not MTK. We have had MTK source for MT6795 for a long time now.
At least some China phone brands like UMI (but definitely excluding Xiaomi) have truth in their advertising and go to lengths to point out what brand and model of ancillary parts go into making the whole
My concerns about ROMs are exacerbated by the outcome of this attempt to host an official UMI ROM and also this attempt. If the report is true, one might presume that perhaps UMI have a good reason to seek to prevent people from hosting their official ROMs, but it still makes me wary ...
I know the Galaxy S8 supports by default Quick Charge 3.0 but does anyone have a thought onto how if the SD devices (like mine) get root, then get unofficial ROM ports to our devices, do you think in the future it would be possible if the ROMs could support Quick Charge 4.0 natively since the SD 835 is compatible with Quick Charge 4.0? I would love to see that soon in the future.
If anyone can answer this question, that would be greatful.

A chipset natively supporting something and a manufacturer implementing it are two very different things. Samsung would have to design the phone to utilize QC 4.0 which then will take advantage of the native chipset support.
Basically, No. The S8 is not even listed as supporting QC 3.0 in qualcoms website. There's been debates and discussions on other forums and the general consensus is. S8/S8+ only support QC 2.0
Samsung didn't bother adding support
It's not that samsung didn't bother but they didn't pay licenses to Qualcomm because they already paid a lot for sd835 licenses itself and a percentage of every phone sold.
Same goes with updates - if Qualcomm is hostile with updates Samsung will not release those.

I would assume so since there is a driver installed called "ANT HAL Service 4.0.0" if you look through the system apps. And would it really be a separate chip? I would assume it's part of the Snapdragon 820 SoC, radio related things tend to be on the SoC. So if one Snapdragon XYZ phone has ANT support, all SD XYZ phones should. Unless I'm wrong and it is actually a discrete chip.
