Pros and cons - Shield Android TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been looking through multiple post, forums and guides to see what the pros and cons are of rooting the nvidia and also running the full android ROM on it. A lot of the post I think I understand what's going on then there will be one random line that contradicts everything said. But if someone could explain the pros and cons to me I'd be forever thankful! Because as of right now I'm under the assumption that if I do all of this I won't have a wireless controller anymore. Not so scared to lose saves but I'm ready to enjoy my device!

i tried the full android rom etc i didnt like it, spoils the point of a tv android device. by all means root for stickmount/foldermount etc, but i couldn't really get them working as i would have liked and with the new android update that has accessibility to the sd cards external as a main storage point, so you can save files/loads apps from there, which makes rooting a bit pointless.
as for android rom, do no bother... you will need keyboard and mouse and its just like a giant phone on your tv screen. i couldnt get my controller working and realised it was a wasted effort to navigate. through apps....

Hi, I have tried full android rom, i found myself struggle with lackluster mouse and keyboard controller (I didn't want pay droidmote server app to use smartphone as act like keyboard/mouse.), and I had go back nvidia stock OS Android TV for now.

Can you verify that adaway works? Thats the only reason i would root....i know xposed works heard it from other ppl that it does but idk about adaway

Call to Arms! - Root detection

There is a big problem on the horizon.....
Lovefilm and Sky Go on my iPad have stopped working due to my jailbreak...
Turns out Sky Go doesnt work on Rooted Android either!
As much as i hate Sky as a company we dont have much choice in the UK if you want some decent channels on TV. I dont even use their app that much but this trend seems to be catching on...
More and more apps are refusing to run on Jailbroken iOS and the same will be happening on Android soon enough. They are also actively patching any work arounds or hacks to stop people running apps on Rooted or JB devices.
i really hope some of the talented people who code for android can find a good solution to this problem or even better Google comes out and tells the world that Rooters should not lose out like this.
If we can make it so much work for them to keep fixing the holes then maybe they will get fed up with trying to patch them.
Because if we dont then more and more apps will follow!

There are some apps out there that will temp unroot your phone so apps like that will work. then you just restore it(OTA rootkeeper allows this). Also I think Siyah kernel supports temp unrooting

Siyah kernel does support temp unrooting, but somehow Sky Go still knows your phone is rooted, and it won't work. So far from the reading I have done there is no solution to this other than to flash back to a stock unrooted firmware.
I don't think it will become the rule on android, because there are to many apps that even need root, but at ios, probably because jailbreak is the only possibility to get, at least partially, out of their ecosystem.

[HOW TO] Barclays Mobile Banking working on rooted S3
As far as I know. Sky Go has gotten around everything so far.
I see not to far in the future a situation where you have to either root and lose lots of apps you use or lose the root lose lots of apps you use.
That's a crap situation for sure

Sky have invested a heck of a lot of time and money to making the latest Sky Go apps very very hard to hack!
They now do a lot of checking on their severs which makes it impossible for us to hack around.
I am sorry but I don't think we will ever get sky go working properly with root, and as soon as we did sky would update the app to fix the loophole.
Google won't do anything because rooted android isn't standard android. The android platform isn't built like windows or OS X, where the default is the user having root available.
Therefore security (DRM in particular) on those platforms is built with that in mind. Android isn't.
Also, while you might have the best of intentions there are plenty of root-users who would use it to copy content offline, trick it into thinking you have a subscription whe you don't etc.

This sux for sure.
On iPad they sandboxed the app in its own virtual environment. could this trick it into think its running on unrooted firmware?
I can't see how there is no way around this. If the app tests root, deny it, if it scans for root binaries, change/rename them. What am I missing here? Is there some other level of detection somewhere?

You cant get the content without a subscription anyway, the problem has been people UDID spoofing and getting more active devices than they are allowed. Its a joke that they limit this anyway they should just make it so you can only be logged in on 2 devices at any one time using traditional methods like IP address and IMEI

The Sky Go app is a bastard
This is a list of some of the things it checks (but not all)
- Root binaries
- Root App
- Phone model
- Android version
- Custom Recovery
- Custom Kernels
- IMEI checks (stops wifi-only tablets..)
The first 4 are simple to overcome, the last three cause major issues!

the Apple skygo app works differently, it doesn't check for IMEI.
wifi-only android tablets do not have IMEI numbers so it will always fail this check

Thats the thing, we (me and two others who worked on hacking this app) couldn't work it out! But it definitely was detecting it, we tried it on Samsung and HTC devices with no root and stock kernel but with a custom recovery and sky go stopped worked, change back to stock recovery and the app works again but we could not find any code that checked it.
On most devices to get it to work you need a stock based rom, stock recovery (unless recovery is part of kernel like S2) stock based kernel (ro.secure=1 must be set!) no or hidden root. You then need to make sure you fit the device or version checks, if you don't you need a hacked app that allows you to do this.
However the latest sky go apps do a sever side check for the apps signature (so you cannot decompile and recompile without changing this). So basically we can no longer do even the most basic of hacks.

Surely you can modify it to spoof the signature the app uses to send to the server...

Anyone here pull the trigger on the SM-P907A?

Stopped by the ATT store yesterday afternoon and got so close to pulling the trigger. Then I remembered that for ~$150 less, I was able to get the 64GB SM-P900 model with the free keyboard offer from Best Buy.
I personally like the idea of being able to use my tablet on the go, but $899 for this 32GB LTE model seems rather steep.
Regardless, I'm still on the edge of picking up this ATT variant and was curious if anyone had done so already or considering the same.
I'm definitely all ears on the pros and cons and would also like to get some feedback with regards to performance, battery life, and firmware updates. I figure that real world performance is negligible between the wifi and lte model, but would like to hear from those that got to use both models.
Thanks in advance.

I picked my AT&T note pro the day it was released (last Friday), and so far I absolutely love it. I have had the Note 10.1 for quiet some time and was a little skeptical about spending $900 just to upgrade. But after just a few days with it I am very glad I "pulled the trigger". The screen resolution is amazing, even compared to the Note 10.1 The speed seems a lot quicker as well, even without root and debloating. As far as battery life I getting around 10-12 hrs of screen time, that's a combination of WiFi and LTE. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the feedback on your experience with the AT&T model of this beast of a tab. I actually picked up the US 64GB version of the P900 use it with a mobile hotspot device and it's been working well for me so far. Still, I'd much rathet not carry around a mobile hotspot just to get online. I just wished they released a 64GB LTE model.

I'm doing the same only with a 32gb model. Choice for me came down to root, at which point it was a no-brainer . . wifi version had it, US carrier versions didn't and I didn't want to risk slower development times for them.
From the looks of it there isn't much development for the wifi version either.

What have you done to your note since rooting? This is the first device I've owned that doesn't have any ROMs available. Not sure what do with it when I take it out of the box...usually it's a quick dead pixel check, then goodbye stock.

Currently running Pie Controls and GMD Gesture Control to assist in application switching and other quick shortcuts. Not sure if I'll keep both I'm relying on Pie Controls more.
With Titanium Backup I've frozen a bunch of applications including Allshare, ANT applications (3 of them), samsung's backup app, Blurb Checkout, Business Week, Cisco Webex, E-Meeting, ELM Agent, Facebook (I use the web page), FWUpgrade, Gallery (I use Gallery KK), Play Newstand, KLMS Agent, Magazine Widget, Music (I use Google Play Music), My Magazine (I use Nova Launcher, the stock launcher sucks), Netflix, NY Times, Pagebuddy Service, Remote Controls and Remote PC app, Samsung Push Service, Scrapbook (no intention of using it), SideSync (dont have other samsung phones), Software Update, Weather and Briefing.
Freezing those applications keeps them from loading even as cached apps freeing up space in RAM to cache other apps that i frequently use.
In addition I uninstalled all Knox related apps.
For other mods I'm using Xposed Installer to do things like per application DPI settings to render things in smaller fonts, block ads, disable nag screens (location consent, modify share menus, modify complete action windows etc.), control what starts at boot (boot manager) as well as a few other tweaks.

Missing Apps, Sideloaded App and observations

First of all I just got to say the fact that I don't have simple apps such as ABC, Fox or HBO Go is a letdown. I still have to switch between my NP and ATV. I don't understand why the NP is so restrictive. I wish I can run full android with the android TV interface. Not this walled garden without many good apps.
What I really like about the NP is the recommendations feature of Android TV. It is well done and pulls in the videos from various apps. I like this curation.
I use the sideloader app and cloud to side load apps. I was able to side load the MSG Go app on the NP. Noticed that it was in portrait mode so I had to download another app to force landscape on all apps. When I watch the video on the msg go app it isn't crisp. I see the scan lines on the movement from the basketball games and the quality isn't HD. On my iPad the same app looks great. Both run off the same wifi so I don't know why the quality is bad on the NP. Maybe there is a setting I need to toggle but the other videos are fine.
What really is frustrating is that apps like Netflix don't work when updated, I have to turn off auto updates for apps to not break anything. It is difficult to know when an update will improve or break an app. It is also difficult to know when an app is compatible or a great android app can be side loaded without compromise.
If anyone has any advise please lay it on me.

You can sideload and install whatever you like onto it. But developers have to say they support Android TV in order for it to appear on the Nexus Player through the store because a lot of them don't work with just a remote control, and devs don't want to get emails or bad reviews for not supporting it. You wanna complain about this, go moan at the devs for not making their app suitable for a TV interface.

Well thats a risk you're gonna have to live with. If its deemed compatible by the developers, it'll be in the Play Store to install on the Nexus Player. If its not, its your risk. There's endless apps, and a very small market for Android TV so a lot of devs just won't bother yet.
Exactly my point. Great experience horrible development
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Maybe the point is that you DON'T sideload. Just because it can be done doesn't mean you'll get a good experience when you do it.
The way Google intended it to be is as a heavily curated selection.....or so they say.
I used to side load but now I don't. I'm not going to use an air mouse or keyboard to control my TV. Usually if there isn't an official app like HBO Go, you can still cast. I would much rather do this than hack my way through some side loaded app.
Sent from my XT1096 using Tapatalk
I think we are still in a transitional period. Small developers are trying to get the most from their work so they go different places. But some of this stuff is simply politics. Fox, ABC, HBO, Amazon make political choices not based on hardware or software limitations. Why does Watch ESPN work on Fire TV with the controller but on the Nexus Player you need to sideload and use a mouse? Politics at play. Why do I have to sideload Kodi onto the Fire TV? More politics.

Side loading is the only way to get the apps that I use regularly on the device I want it on. My point is that it shouldn't be a walled garden and Google should make it so apps like abc, ESPN etc are already on the system. No reason for those basic ones not to be.

It isn't a walled garden if you can sideload. However you are expecting all sideloaded apps to run as they are on a TV when they are made to be used on a touchscreen in the first place.
What you should be ranting is why not more companies or devs release apps that are remote optimized, instead of barking up the wrong tree. Google isn't stopping those companies from releasing TV compatible apps - those companies are the ones not doing so.

Android pay is novel and CAN make life easier, but it's not a necessity or something 90% of users will be using so I doubt root and custom roms are in any danger or extinction based on just android pay.

I personally am finding very little reason to root anymore. The only added benefit would be adblocking but I can live with it just for Android Pay. Native tethering works. System UI Tuner settings does most of the things I wanted for GravityBox.

Does imprint still work if rooted?
Personally i couldn't care less about paying with my phone when my wallet and everything I need to carry is with me regardless. Regardless of that people have gotten android pay working with rooted devices. Root, adblock / do your thing and the unroot. Add your cards and pay as you normally would. Most people don't need root 24/7 so you can have your cake and eat it too.
Don't want to root? Enjoy your ads. Or use one of the proxy services just hope they treat your data well.
Far from it, there will be plenty of XDA N6p roms to go around! Happy Flashing

Root and custom roms are not synonymous. You can have root on the stock rom on your phone and you can have a custom rom without root. For example, I have a custom rom right now without root, as I need to use apps that don't work with root, but I still want features from a custom rom.

Why are people asking this question? It seems so nonsensical to me...S5 had root and a fingerprint scanner, s6, note 5, tab s etc. Why would root stop a hardware feature like a fingerprint scanner?!

Errm - because I haven't owned any of those devices I wasn't "in the know", so I asked the question. Jeez.
There are no custom roms. There is only Chroma.
i doubt it will die however paying with your phone has put a dent in the community as well as made android have more security because of it, plus apps like adguard, and for samsung there are disable apps that don't require root and no ads and app disabling are the only two things some people want.
Won't die. Even more so in countries like mine which refuse to support Android Pay or any other form of mobile credit payment

Why do you need it? It's a god damn sham. Google wallet has been there for ages no one complaint and have been rooting phones since it existed.

God no root is a massive pain.
No ad blocking, going from no ads to all ads between my 6 and 6P even XDA is bad !
Also I like to hide the nav bar to negate the burn in issues of AMOLED, don't care what anyone says these screens WILL burn in its because of the technology.
3. Tweeked stock ROMs with proper reboot options and circle battery and such
Wait for Xposed.
When Xposed is available you can install a cloak and use Pay.
I use pay on my LG G3 with Xposed and root.
Cards need to be added without Xposed installed.
To use Pay you either need to disable root or cloak it.
Not a big deal.

I didn't know this thought you had to have root to flash custom roms

Upgraded to 2.0, Android 5.1 problems

I find that the device has lost much tablet functionality. The screen does not auto rotate and stays in landscape, there is no owner information tab to display on lock screen, Amazon apps and instant video will not sync. The device will not cast a screen anymore to a roku3. In general the 5.02 Android version 1.5 was a much better tablet user experience at least for me. I almost wish for a way to downgrade back 'til this is sorted! I had hoped Jide would not grow so fast that they dropped their focus of great software on adequate hardware. They now seem to have lost their way. I had supported as a kickstarter for ultra and mini with the thinking that they can help the developing world with that proposition......now chasing Intel x86 at the failing of the kick starter supported user experience. Quite a few titles from the Google play store do not run any longer on Remix OS 2.0. At least the GPS, camera, keyboard, Bluetooth, still seem to work. I had hoped this hardware and Jide would end the constant "testing" concept as it seems like working on custom ROMs again! My Pipo M6 pro is still pretty darn useful on custom ROMs! I hope Jide regains their focus! Great UI, good enough hardware!

Can't install google calendar , amazon instant video, and their app store, won't sync. The screen rotation seems to be a result of the launcher file manager experimental feature.....it seems to disable rotation for some reason.

do you have remix 2.0 on your Remix Ultra Tablet? How is the Ultra Tablet Working on 2.0, are any apps problematic , features not working? I am using a Remix Ultra Tablet on 2.0 Remix pre release version. I see a few bugs since updating from 1.5
Am I in the wrong forum?

For me, on my laptop, I don't see bug. I have remis os 2.0 on USB, and I boot from this USB. I play swordigo and other game, my laptop is digital. It's very big advantage on remix os. I don't see any problem. it lacks the root and the battery indicator.

I think the Jide folks just stayed in vegas and never went home. I ordered a Ultra Tablet a week ago and haven't heard anything. I noticed they did increase the price $50 since I've ordered it.

I ordered Friday one week ago and received it yesterday. Ordered for 250 $. shipping to Germany with Fedex. Waiting for the toll fee now
Glad I found this Forum on XDA, because the JIDE forum is a hot mess and pretty much useless. The old forum was much better over there.
Anyway, I digress; I haven't "updated" to the 2.0 yet on my ultra-tablet because right now, I have ROOT on my device and I'm pretty sure there is no way to ROOT the new 2.0 OS yet. Am I correct in assuming so?

Maybe a general Jide ***** forum thread should be developed?
I started this thread, because like you I lurked for awhile over there and it is just kumbaya crapola. I haven't rooted the ultra tablet because it is just o.k. hardware platform. More interested in their more with less proposition if attainable. The mini makes a great developing world pc to get past a phone...
I think it smart to be working with XDA and X86 as the more crappy old PC's that can be !made useful the better. It's amazing the folks wanting to make these their entire command center for a home theater. Maybe they should write code and get a PI of whatever flavor they want!
Anyway, I was hoping to hear from other Remixers who've put 2.0 on thier Ultra, and what issues they have had. I do not see Jide responding to any issues anywhere....just kumbaya.
I think they were hoping to be bought up before they actually need to run a business! Perhaps just another piece of Android technology from the CH. Ina corp that is build it and move on.
I thought their concept of more with less was good for the developing world as opposed to less with more ala Apple and MS. Frankly I've been pretty happy with Nexus devices and cheap hardware on custom roms.(also a more with less proposition) My Pipo M6 pro on custom roms with a Logitech keyboard does everything this can all be it slower.
We'll see if Jide delivers, or fades....I am sure they are in over the heads, the fact that people want to root or custom to! Tells you their software solution may not be needed. Their hardware does not warrant development more than Android sticks do.
They claim to be making themselves a software outfit, but the Nexus 9, Cube and other devices have not seen any love lately.
Time will tell. Back to 2.0 update issues for the remix ultra...

I'm running the new 2.0 update and have root. You just need to boot into the CWM recovery (or flash it) that was posted in the old Jide forums, then flash the latest SuperSU zip from Chainfire. I haven't tested swapping out the stock launcher yet, as I'm really digging the new features, like desktop mode. AdAway worked perfectly, so I can confirm that root is working for at least some aspects.

Did Google calendar install and is usable? Mine can't write to drive, installed but says calendar storage is not turned on in system? Also their stupid feedback link on the shut down screen does not work since no feed back app in drawer. Did your upgrade install one that works? For whatever reason Amazon app store won't sync apps....do you use any Amazon stuff? Is it good? Trying to decide if I should blow it away and re upgrade if mine did not get all it should...seems to be at least stable and most of the hardware does seem to function correctly outside of my display seems to ghost quite terrible after the upgrade! Also Google photos seems unable to see device folders and g+ loads an app that still puts a photos app into your device....real odd!

Google Calendar fails to load on mine for the same reason. My install didn't include a feedback agent (and I think that's common across everyone's builds). I haven't tried the Amazon apps yet, so I can't comment on their usability. I will say that my display was ghosting hardcore even before the upgrade, so the 2.0 upgrade didn't affect that one way or the other. I just tried the Google Photos app and it sees my wallpaper folders in the /SDCARD partition OK, so I'm not sure what's happening on your device for it not to see them.

I can't believe the old CWM v6.0.5.1 still works on the new update and more importantly, no one has figured out how to get TWRP or a "newer" version of CWM working? I guess, if it ain't broke, don't fix it?
Thanks for the information. Will upgrading to "2.0" wipe the userdata? I don't care about re-installing apps, etc... just worried about all my media content on the device currently.
I used Kingroot as on device root. Is working so far, but can't use SuperSU. Need to stick with kingroot...

As the instructions say save/backup your data! It seemed to be a complete erase reinstall from what mine did...be sure to pop out your micro sd as some discussions made it sound like sometimes it got caught up in the fun......?

Thanks. Then I guess I'm going to have to wait a while. I've got too many .mkv files on the device and it would take forever to transfer > PC < back to Tablet.

So I tried this with my ultratablet, just wanted to boot to recovery first to make sure it works. Doing a "fastboot boot recovery.img" I get the remix logo but it doesn't ever boot into cwm it just locks up. Anything special I need to do before?
