Touch screen lag demonstration - X Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This is for demonstration purposes. If you see the same amount of touch screen delay on your own Moto X Play's, than this is not a defective device. Post a video of your own device demonstration if you would like to contribute. This 100% contributes to the sluggish feeling UI. For comparison, I have a Galaxy S5 running CM12.1. Can you tell which one has much less delay? If not, that would explain why we have such a difference of opinions in the community right now.

I think he said that the S5 is running CyanogenMod 12.1, not TouchWiz.
Anyway, this comparison doesn't surprise me. The S5 has around 3/5 the touch delay compared to to the X Play. Out of curiosity, I tried the same comparison with my X Play (lux) and 2014 X (victara). Hardware wise, the victara is essentially the same as the S5, and software wise both are running ROMs fairly close to AOSP. As I expected, the comparison results were essentially the same. The victara had around 3/5 the touch delay of the lux. This makes perfect sense, given that the MSM8974's single core performance is nearly double that of the MSM8939.
As to whether or not I consider this to be a caused of perceived lag, this is where I disagree a bit. Some people are more bothered by this type of latency than others I suppose. In real world usage, I personally don't notice if a page is a few millimetres behind my finger when I scroll, so I don't consider it to be laggy in my opinion. To me, I consider lag to be cases where the phone pauses and I wait for it to do something. I also consider choppy (low frame rate) animations to be bad. I haven't experienced much of either of the two things I consider to be lag. The only thing that bugged me a bit was low frame rate in the animation to drag down the Quick Settings drawer. I recently enabled the developer option to force 2D GPU rendering in CM, and that animation seems to have gotten significantly smoother (or at least more consistent; it used to be smooth sometimes and choppy other times). The frame rate is still visibly lower than my victara (this device has 1/3 the GPU power), but at least it isn't annoying now.

[Q]Note Lag

Hi,
I had a play with my friends G Note today, and while it was overall an awesome device, I did notice it lagged quite a bit. For example, In the standard browser the scrolling was very sticky comapared to my GS2, which perhaps has the smoothest scrolling of any phone currently available. The hardware is pretty much the same other than the high resolution screen. Is this what is causing the slugishness?
Do you think this will be improved upon in future updates? I'm really interested in buying one as a media device to carry along side my primary phone, but the slugishness I witnessed is making me hesitant.
Thanks!
In my experience, the flaws of a phone are there when you look for it. For me the only lag I notice is when typing fast on the phone. The overall features outshine that small lag. This phone has a 1.4ghz Exynos, just wait for the ROMs.

Nexus 4 Input Lag

Hey Guys,
ever since i use Android im kind of annoyed by the responsiveness of the tochscreen. Even with state of the art smartphones like the S3 (ICS version) there is substantial lag. (compared for instance to an iphone)
I was really excited when JellyBean was announced because as it seems, it addresses the issue.
However when i tried an S3 with JellyBean i still felt the lag.
My question is whether the Nexus 4 actually matches the Iphone in responsiveness.
(I do not mean the stuttering when opening for instance the app drawer, i mean the pure relation of the finger touching the device and the quickness of the response of the device.)

It uses the same new technology as the iPhone 5 which brings the touchpanel closer to the front glass meaning responsiveness should be significantly better. It's called In-Cell Touch display if you want to Google it.
You'll get a real answer when the phone comes out. Or check video reviews. We know as much as you do at this point.
Thanks for the answers enviii and ralexand!
The thing is, this input lag issue is very rarely adressed. It seems to me as if most poeple dont even notice it. It may be that im kinda picky there but its definitely a very important feature for me...
As the device has been released I would appreciate someone talking about the mentioned issue, who actually posseses the phone.

lol... that's just not true. It helps viewing angles, but has absolutely no effect on responsiveness.
The thing is, It could be or could not be,I think its just what peoples definition of smoothness and response is. Never know until the phones out. IMO

Well for me the scale is definitely the iphone. (even still the 3G when scrolling homescreens) Also top notch Windows Phones offer very good responsiveness.

I guess it would be better for you to stay with iPhone.
EDIT: Deleted
iPhone relies on a system that basically delivers all or much of the available resources to the graphical interface when scrolling, which slows down or stops whatever else the phone is doing at the time (ie stops loading a web page when you start scrolling or momentarily pauses a download). This, along with a very strong GPU, is much of the reason for the smooth interface. (note: this info was taken from an interview with a Google employee, probably about a year or less ago. Could be outdated, but I believe it's still true...)
4.1 ramped up graphics rendering FPS to 60fps. This, a long with a strong GPU, S4 Pro processor and (mainly) 2 gigs of ram should result in an incredibly smooth UI. Also, the curved glass on the edges of the screen have been noted to give a much smoother feel to scrolling, whether it's a placebo effect or not will just have to be determined over time.
Long story short...yeah, this thing should be smooth as butter (pun intended)
Also iOS is more optimized since its on for few devices.

actually the big main reason for smoothness of ios vs android is that...every single application (basically everything) runs on virtual machines on the android unlike ios.. so it is true that the beefier the hardware the smoother the device..and thats y ios is able to run smooth even with lesser hardware..

Thanks for this in-depth information. I have already known some of this from posts by google employees on their google+ pages.
I hope the changes introduced in JellyBean and the sheer performance of the Nexus 4 can overcome the innate performance issues of Android.
When someone has made first real life experiences with the device please let me know

I have a Nexus S (awaiting a 16GB N4) and I can tell you that Jellybean offered a tremendous improvement in smoothness.
As for the lack of improvement with the S3 and Jelly Bean, do keep in mind that is not "stock" Jellybean, Samsung may have avoided using any of the "project butter" code for their own GPU rendering.. Only Nexus devices are guaranteed the advertised improvements listed by Google, once an OEM touches there's no guarantee.
Only the framerate is high. There is MASSIVE input lag of 100-200ms on every Android device. As evidenced in every video of the Nexus 4 the screen lags behind your finger by 1 inch or more when swiping. This makes it feel extremely sluggish and unresponsive in apps like Facebook and games like Canabalt are unplayable.
I noticed this too when I first started messing around with my N4.
A test I like to do is use the calculator, and see how many numbers I could hit before they would be highlighted (which I assume means the device starts registering the command). For some reason I was getting 2 (almost 3) punches before the device would see it. On my Wildfire S and my iPod Touch the input lag was never this bad.
Amazingly, I actually found a solution. I don't remember if I turned it on myself or if it came on by default, but my phone had the "Magnification gestures" on. You can find them in the "Accessibility" settings. I turned it off, and BAM! The input lag has practically disappeared. I don't know why it was doing that or how it's related, but this has effectively fixed it for me. There may still be a slight input lag, but it's small enough that I can ignore it. Before it was easily over 500 ms.
Hope this helps.
I've made sure that's off on every Android device I've tested. The input lag is still considerably worse than the iPhone.

Droid Turbo performance... not as good?

I was playing with the Droid Turbo at Verizon today, and was surprised to see lag using Chrome and other apps. It just doesn't run as snappy as the new Moto X. I then read an article that the Snapdragon 805 chip can handle Quad HD (2560x1440), but really only by itself and not well with other things going on in the background (like animating one thing on top of another).
http://appleinsider.com/articles/14...er-poor-graphics-performance-vs-iphone-6-plus
I realize this is a pro-Apple website, but I believe my eyes in the real world over a website, and the Droid Turbo lagged behind the Moto X 2014 and the HTC One M8. I would say it ran comparable to the LG G3, which I also noticed lagged more than the M8.
If it's true that these manufacturers are choosing a high resolution just because it's advertised without checking real-world performance, then it's a disappointment, because they could have gone with a lower resolution and gotten better performance, speed, and battery life (and it's not performing for 2 days in reviews as advertised), at a compromise of a hardly-noticeable change in pixel resolution. I couldn't even tell a pixel difference between the Droid MAXX (720), the Moto X 2014 (1080), and the Droid Turbo (1440) without getting close and squinting, and they're all 5" screens.
Can someone root their Droid Turbo and lower the resolution to 1080 to see if they get a better frame rate and battery life? I'm thinking of doing that but I'm not sure what I lose.
The LG G3 is the same QHD resolution but with the older 801. No lag for me there either. I think it's just you.

I think I just notice it whereas you don't, lucky you. I've been doing this since 320x240, I can tell you when a game or TV show is running less than 60 frames per second (and when a game is 30fps as opposed to a TV show at 24fps, like Seinfeld), whereas I've noticed other people either don't notice or barely notice. If you're the type that doesn't notice, good for you, but the more apps you install and more things you do on the phone, the more it will be compromised with an underpowered chip.
I can tell by how quickly you responded you either didn't read the article or for long.
If nobody else notices, great, back to my question: Will someone who roots the phone please leave a review of the phone at 1920x1080 as far as performance and battery life?
I know there are people on this forum who can tell the difference in frame rates, and lag will bother them. I'd love to know how you improved the phone (the Moto X 2014 still impressed me the most at the store, though I want more battery life).
Just wait until Lollipop hits this phone. It is buttery smooth on Nexus 5 so can't wait for this phone to get. Also BTW I notice no lag either.
I usually notice these things as well (I did with the g3, which is why I didn't get it), but with the store demo or the one in my hand, I see absolutely no lag so far.

It seems really snappy and is way faster than my old G2 i had. I will never use another LG phone cause I went through 3 of the G2s. I too cant wait for Lollipop to come to the Turbo..

Well, not yet anyway.
I dunno, my phone feels super smooth. Pretty much like playing a game at 60fps. Haven't noticed a bit of lag yet other than in the camera's viewfinder. I guess every model will differ a bit here and there though.
Well, I guess I got the only three laggy Droid Turbos at Verizon, because they were consistent this way, and the other phones were consistent their way, and if I had to choose without knowing anything else about the phones but what I saw there, I would have chosen the Moto X 2014. I'm still just banging my head on the wall with the decision to use 2560x1440 on a 5" screen, when that's not even noticeable to me or most people without squinting up close, and the battery life (and apparent performance) loss that just goes with an increase in resolution. The more pixels, the more power.
I own the G3 and the turbo. There is 0 lag on this thing. Compared to Tue G3, it runs laps around it. Everything is just faster and smoother

I didn't play with the display model, but maybe it's a demo mode thing? I know they have all that junk loaded onto it to showcase the device. Might be bogging down the system there.
As a huge supporter of this phone and someone who has been waiting a long time to have it in hand.... it has hiccuped on me a few times through transitions. ONLY minor hiccups, though. The CPU intensive things fly. Leaps and bounds better than any of my prior Android devices.
Overall it's performance has been way beyond that of my M7, G2, and Moto G of the past year. I'm going to play around with spare parts and what not. Maybe I can speed up animations even more.
Thank you for the intelligent replies here; with all the trolling on Twitter and YouTube and terrible replies I get at lesser forums, these have been the most intelligent (and actually cogent) replies I've gotten to tech issues I've posted in a long while. I really was expecting less, especially since some of what I said may have sounded incendiary. Thank you XDA for elevating the rhetoric!
I also noticed the floor models lagging a little bit when I went to get my Turbo today.
After loading all my apps and disabling that garbage Verizon bloat, its smooth as can be.
I Edged up from my G3 and have zero regrets. :good:
Undoubtedly, this device would probably perform in top-form if it were rooted, with an unlocked bootloader. Unfortunately, with the most recent discovery of the root exploit for some Sammy/Moto devices (towelroot) Qualcomm and Moto have made damn sure that from here on out, exploits like that won't happen again (or as easily). I figure with 3 Gigs of RAM, a quad-core CPU, and hopefully Lollipop down the line, we will have a beast of a device that will take us through 2 more years of minimized lag, before something better is invented.

Did you read the article? It's completely backed up by technical specs and facts. Theyre not hating just to hate. The iphone 6+ has been regarded by many non baised review sites as the smoothest graphics of any phone.
Read the article, it has useful info. Theyre pushing display resolution ahead of chipset performance and its showing.
I have had mine for almost 24 hrs and absolutely no lag whatsoever. Downloaded the AnTuTuBenchmark app and it DESTROYED the top score of the highest rated phone in the app which was the HTC M8. Since I work at Verizon..I had a coworker downloaded and run the benchmark test on his Note 4 and it came in around 2-3 spots below the M8. Love the QHD display...the only thing that keeps this phone from being perfect is the lack of simultaneous using data and voice use on LTE that's only temporary though...but otherwise..I have ZERO complaints. Absolutely crushes my DroidMaxx by comparison.

G3 Now and then How have the phone evolved with the software updates ?

I am expecting my G3 to arrive in my post office tomorrow.
When it was released I was very intersted in G3, I was very impressed with the form factor and screen to body ratio and also the buttons on the back felt new and fresh and ergonomic. However all the reviews in the beginning was not that positive, so I did buy the G2 instead. The main problem I did see with G3 was overheated GPU that was not really good enough for a 2k screen that did also throttle brightness on the screen. The other big thing was that screen most people did not seem that fanatic with it despite being the first 2k screen, it was rather dim and and not bright enough.
However for you people who have had the device sine the start how have the phone evolved ?
I can imagine Lollipop with its 2k Optimization did a lot of good things to the G3 ?
In more recent reviews I do not see people complain about any lag, or that it is slow.
I see also no real complain about the low screen brightness. I have seen early reviews said that it was 370 nits but they have corrected it to 460 nits which
is about as bright as most flagships from the time. Which make me wonder if first revision of the device have a less bright screen ? or if this have been corrected with sofware... regarding contrast I think it will never be the best screen.
Hi,
My experience was a bit mixed feelings.
When i was using the stock Rom (20H) it was works fine, but there was lag and i suffered a bit of overheating during the summer.
Now I changed to a custom ROM (cloudy) and the lag is almost gone, but in some cases still there (specially when waking up from deep sleep). Overheating is not an issue on that Rom, even after heavy gaming.
The screen is awesome. The hardware is good enough. LG software and Rom update is crap.
I'm happy but i don't think I'll by LG again.

I'm super happy with mine, running CM12.1 latest nightly. I don't have issues with lag or overheating. Though I don't do much gaming.

The phone's performance certainly improved. But even latest 20 t/s/u roms still has jerky animations everywhere. It's better than 1 second delay on opening EVERYTHING, that was present on kitkat, but it's still pretty bad IMO. Especially if compared with CM...
BTW, CM and roms based on it are using 5.1.1_R18 as a base. This is WAAAY newer than LG's 5.0 build. Faster, smoother, more battery efficient...
And yeah, the 2k screen is not the problem. My friend has an Oppo Find 7a: 2k screen, adreno 330, 801 cpu @ 2.33 GHz... And it's as smooth as his IPad. Aaaand it's on 4.3. Which means that LG did so terrible job at optimising the firmware, that even ART and all 5.0 performance improvements can't cover up their coding unskills ._.
Guys, have you tried not using the stock LG keyboard?
There's a thread reporting that for some reason, doing this, kills at least home screen lags. That certainly did the trick for me as well, although I keep coming back to this keyboard, since I find it best suits my needs compared to Google's or Swiftkey's.
Just make sure to restart your phone after changing the default keyboard to anything else than LG's stock keyboard, so the process isn't running in the background.
I have now received the phone performed the updates, the latest update I use now is 5.0 still. Do you guys have 5.1 ?
I can confirm the phone is slow and laggy as hell.. it is worse then my Mate 7.
I have never rooted and have not much experience. CM 12 might be the only way, but is that still based on kitkat ?
LG G3 was a real nightmare on stock atleast for me I got the 5.0 version, I read that people in usa have 5.1. so I guess you have less problem.
Anyway I solved any type of lag with help of modyfying that animation speeds in developer options setting it to 5.x on all 3.
In apex launcher I did set it always stay in memory, I did not use system animations but apex own "slide up" app animation.
in the Drawer I use the in and out fly animation (the gpu cannot hande the circle animation looks terrible)
Anyway this made a dramtic difference..so I am pertty much happy now.. it is faster then my Mate 7..and I really like the multi tasking view..even though I wish it did open little bit faster (again I guess it does in 5.1)
Screen was not impressive I prefer the G2 screen because of higher conrtast ratio.
That blacks are not good on this display, JDI NEO displays have better blacks for sure.. they are in Sony phones and Huawei to name a few..
Anyway.. this phone I will have until Huawei Mate 8 is released..which I will most likely buy.. The only thing that worry me is that they are so busy making it as thin as possible that they will sacrifice the batter..I am sorry I will not accept a small battery.
Weird I keep reading about lag issues on stock G3 and I never experienced lag on my stock Koodo/Telus D852. Wondering if it's carrier related and how bad they "tweak" the base rom...

Scrolling smoothness

Some phones exhibit choppy scrolling, especially when navigating long web pages when multiple apps are running in the background. Rate this thread to express how you smooth scrolling feels on the LG G8 under such conditions. A higher rating indicates that scrolling is always buttery smooth, even when you're reading a 10,000 word article on "how to kiss a girl".
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
I don`t have the LG G8 but some reviewers are talking about a lag. Have you experienced such thing?
This quote is from phonearena review
One thing that surprised us negatively when using the LG G8 was the amount of lag and stutter in places where you would not expect it like in the home screen and the recent apps interface.
This definitely feels like a bug in the LG interface and something that we have seen on pre-production devices, but definitely not something that we can tolerate in a phone, let alone a flagship. The stutter is quite noticeable, but we do hope that the company will fix it with an update as this seems to be some kind of a bug and this is definitely not expected in a phone with the latest and most powerful Snapdragon chip around.

I have a LG G8 and I have seen this issue.
Scrolling smoothness and responsiveness is always perfect after a reboot, but after some time (a day or 2) it gets choppy and a little laggy. It clears up after a reboot. I have not been able to clear it up by closing apps. And it does not seem to be affected by the resolution setting. I also have not found that starting any specific app seems to cause it.
I have seen the choppiness in Nova Launcher's app draw, Chrome and Kiwi Browser, and several other apps. The choppiness is like the frame rate is dropping from 60FPS to sub 30 FPS.
Perhaps the issues is a power management bug or some kind of CPU throttling.
Anandtech states the same thing which is disappointing , hopefully it's a software issue rather than hardware.

I too reboot to make sure there's like choppiness on a phone with SD845 LG G7, but in LG G8, surprised that it's the software to blame, not the SoC
In my LG G7, Settings/Battery/power Saving Exclusions/ tick all apps "On" I don't know why LG added this useless feature? LG should damn bootloader unlock all variants, so that a rooted phone with custom kernel with different CPU Governors have an impact on smoothness in the UI ! Even a USA unlocked model unfortunately, no support from LG.
Settings/Developer Options/ tick on "Force GPU Rendering" & OpenGL "Skia" should make the underrated beast smoother/snappier! How sad, LG
Haven't seen a stutter yet
I haven't rebooted in 5 days, and performance had been good. Only thing I have changed is I set my live wallpaper to the fluid Sim one on the play store. Probably not related unless it's something to do with a power saving state like I speculated before and that wallpaper is causing the CPU/gpu to go to a higher power state (probably not though).
Probably just a coincidence.
I haven't experienced any issues with scrolling. No stutters or anything, wonderful performance on this phone since I got it.
Mine was clean and smooth for the first 2 days, then finally developed noticeable lag that required a restart. I wish I could cange my vote.
I wonder if this is Pie, more than LG. When my s8 'upgraded', I had to restart every day to steady the frame rate, despite my tweaking of every power saving setting and animation related dev tool.
I totally aggree, if they can't bother to make it work right, they really ought to let the community do it. While my inexperienced eye was granting power saving exclusions to every app, I noticed a system app called "SuperBatterySaving". Is this new to android? Perhaps the issue?
Oh, and I found no "Skia" opengl setting.

How sad, LG

I switched on power exclusions for every app, switched off Adaptive battery, forced gpu rendering. Nothing helps. After 1 or 2 days, the frames drop in most animation, even simple games.
After this happened with my s8 as well, I'm pointing my finger at Pie. My wild guess is that it averages your use and throttles the cpu to that average. I use Bose sleepbuds, which require an app to run all night, but only sipping power. I dunno, I've thought about it every morning since Pie entered.
What do you all think?

I can't believe how often I have to restart this phone to smooth the frame rate. Sometimes twice per day. It's so aggravating to have an expensive flagship act like a budget pos. I will note that it seems to happen more on days that I use hdmi out.
People with other phones have complained about similar issues with the arrival of Pie. How can we complain to Google, or at least see if a fix is in the works?
I've got the unlocked US T-Mobile red version and there is definitely lag/stutter on the UI but it's something I can live with. It seems to have a cold a start then catch up then sends fine afterwards.
My 6T maybe fast but it's definitely not as smooth as other phones out there.
Update: My issue seems to be related to using hdmi out. I haven't used it in a couple weeks, and have had no more stuttering problems at all. Nice and smooth. Now I'm glad I voted high here. It's been a real pleasure.
So, if you're going to use hdmi out, restarting should be part of the routine.
Is anybody else having a similar experience?
I voted a 4. I have seen smoother phones with lesser hardware. I'm rating the plain jane LG G8 with their software, not some launcher, and it has some jittery feel to it.
