Chrome is draining battery like crazy. - Galaxy S6 Edge+ Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I have an unusual problem with my new edge plus. When I check what is draining my battery, Chrome is at the top, even in front of screen. I have tried to find out what is causing this via forums etc., and I all I can find is that the newest version of Chrome should draw significantly less battery than previous versions? Well, I use the latest Chrome-build, and as you can see it's not quite working out.
Any help?
Regards -
Ballista

I had the same problem and that's why I moved to Firefox plus adblocker plug in available for Firefox.

[issue] The issues found in official 3.1 rom

Dear all,
I had updated my eee pad 36 hrs ago.
And I found some issues after operating.
1.
Music player builded in can't go next song automatically after screen off (battery mode).
2.
The audio may be broken when using headphone sometime.
3.
After rotating pad 180 degree, the desktop fresh rate might be slower.
Also some system animation.
I known some ones' gmail widget is gone, but I did not.
So I don't list this issue on this post.
Here are the issues I found:
1. Browser sluggish when scrolling. If there are images the page redraws when scrolled showing black spaces. Also using the dock, scrolling or navigating in a webpage is a pain, it keeps skipping or jumping to the top.
2. Flash seems to have stopped working in Dolphin browser, I tried watching some videos on gametrailers.com, and only audio plays, video is a slideshow. It works fine on stock browser though.
3. Frequent FCs in Launcher Pro, didnt have any prior to the update.
No g mail widget
Lots of lag going from portrait to landscape
Lag on home screens

Forgot to mention, battery life that was amazing prior to the update is now plain bad. From a full charge at 8PM CST, it is now sitting in idle at 60% with no charge coming from the dock, so possibly the dock charge is drained out. I probably used it for 30mins playing Plants vs Zombies HD.

Having the same issue myself, seems to be worse off now with 3.1 installed.
I'm having some bothersome little issues as well, and so I'm going to do a factory reset on mine today. If the issues are still there afterward, I'll report them here. I'll also report if a factory reset helps anything.

I just used gametrailers and HD videos (twisted metal is what I tried) worked great. Not only did the video and audio match, they both played smoothly. I know that doesnt help but, it may just be yours.. or your connection.
I had delivered these issues to my friend who is in Asus.
Hope this can help us to get better operations in 3.1.
As said in another thread, i have problems with betterylife too. Battery life was great, but now...
And it looks like stockbrowser is sometimes faster and better, but then at once it is very slow and laggy.

ok let me try that again then. If I could skip the stock browser altogether, some of my frustrations will be alleviated.
Should I skip this update until it is worked out? If so how without root? And if I do install it do you think a factory reset before would help some of these problems?
I also doing a factory reset now.
Maybe some problems will go with wind, I wish ...
Just updated and have none of the mentioned issues. Can't comment on battery life quite yet.
My issue is not the battery life... Mine is random reboots while docked to the keyboard dock... It happened three to four times yesterday and one time this morning. By the way, I'm using the leaked 3.1. I'm wondering if there are any differences with the official 3.1 update and the leaked one?
I have the leaked verison of 3.1 and the battery life sucks. Before I could ave about 10% for every hour now its down to 40 mins per 10%. I heard the guys over at the xoom forum are also not happy with the battery life on 3.1....I was hoping 3.1 would fix the lag on the browser but I guess not......the only thing they fix was the youtube app......pretty sad
WHOA...Official 3.1 and Mobile Sites ???
I swear since OTA 3.1 update, when I type a URL, eg, yahoo.com, or any URL, I get the mobile site version on my browser.
This was NOT the case with 3.0.1.
Is it just me ? Am I doing something wrong ?

You will probably have to set the User Agent String under the browser settings to desktop (again).

Dolphin Browser Crashing

Good morning,
I am having some issues with the latest Dolphin Browser. It seems to be consuming too much battery and is crashing a lot, even when I am or haven't been using it. I get the message that it has crashed even when it hasn't been used. Additionally, it is consuming too much battery. It now is number 1 of my battery consumers by the end of the day and I don't use it that often. If I do it's fairly quickly. I am on CM10.1 and this started on the 2/5 nightly. It also happened on 2/8 and the one I am currenlty on, M1.
Anyone else having this issue? Can I solve this?
Thanks
I've had issues with Dolphin ever since 9.1 came out. I've essentially switched to Boat now because Dolphin has become way too unstable, especially with jetpack installed. And jetpack is really a necessary add in for dolphin to work right. After using Boat, I actually prefer it now after being a long time dolphin user. Try it out

Official 5.1 Feedback [Moto G 4G]

Hi guys,
Now that some 5.1 ROMs have started to roll out in a few countries, could anyone who has tried it give us a little detailed review of lollipop?
I'm especially interested in the following points (in comparison to KitKat):
-Memory management
-Battery life
-Any bugs (real bugs, not things you just don't like)
Just a reminder: I'm asking for info on official android 5.1, NOT 5.0.X
Cheers to anyone for taking part!:beer::beer:

I don't have a 4G but I'd be interested if anyone with battery drain AFTER using GPS still has it after the update, or is it fixed...
Hi, i updated it yesterday and my mobile is a lot more smooth!
With KitKat I was having huge memory problems, I couldn't use Spotify and chrome at the same time cause the music on the background was killed and the launcher redrawn. But now I can open apps with music on the background, multitask changing between apps without a redraw. It seems like it's fixed, I hope it doesn't get bad with time.
Battery seems better but can't say nothing that soon.
Also I've noticed something: there is no quicksettings bar widget (at least I can't find it) and screen cast included in 5.1 doesn't work, it says no device found, and doesn't let you add or search for devices.
Update was a little bit over 400 mb big. It took a while to download. The device didn't get warm during the update procedure. Pulling down notification bar twice shows the toggles (brightness slider, screencast and flash light included). Settings got a separate icon. There's a guest mode. If you touch the battery symbol, you'll be directed directly to the according settings menu. Virtual buttons and icon of the messages app changed also. Background color of the settings and notifications is white. You can delete all of the notifications at once. The notifications are prominently shown on the lock screen. Multitasking got a new look either (Material design).
how to root 5.1?
I've found it's still possible to crash Google Play Music or Poweramp from within Chrome. Do too much and one's music stops. I had the same issue on KitKat - normal apps are generally okay but things that are slightly heavier on the CPU make the sound jump or cut out (the player restarts about a minute later paused). Not too bothered, I just avoid surfing if I'm listening to music. Using Bluetooth audio if that makes a difference.
I had to factory reset initially - update was a bit sluggish (marginal) and battery wasn't great. Encountered a few oddities.
Luckily all my apps reinstalled and none of my data was lost except SMS messages and e-mail account logins (odd); everything else either synced or was on the SD card. Didn't take long; 5 minutes doing the welcome setup, outside that 30 mins either side where I just left the phone to do things.
No other bugs here. Yet. Though the performance isn't on-par with KitKat (I think). It's marginal though; Google Now might not pop up as quickly or the animation might lag if something else is going on. But all in all it's a trade-off for the material design which is oh-so nice.
Thank you very much

Ok, my Moto G is running Lollipop now for 24 h. It does look defintely nice, there is no mistake about it. And it's quite responsive, but the WLAN connection is the opposite of it...

No, I can not check for sure, but the latancy must be abnormously high, because the reaction in Browser and Apps over the Internet is hilarious...

Have been running it for roughly 48h... processor has minimum state of 787 MHz (instead of 300 something MHz), and every second reboot Android seems to reset the Dalvik (loading apps at startup). Otherwise pretty impressed. I did a full reset after the installation btw... Here with retail German XT1039 5.1
I've rooted now. I was having issues with the memory filling up. Google App seems to be the worst offender but I use it a lot so I've left it alone.
Installed AdAway, removed Motorola Alert/Assist, some Google Apps and a few other things and unsurprisingly, things have massively sped up. Tempted to remove the random services which are probably orphaned ie. com.motorola.bug2go, com.motorola.emarphoneextns, com.motorola.motgeofencesvc, Invisible Net 1.0, etc. etc. but no idea what they do.
I thought there was no method yet to root Peregrine with 5.1 . Could you tell us how did you do it?
Using this method worked fine for me

Yeah I used the chainfire method, pushed a new logo via adb to get rid of the bootloader unlocked warning.
For some speed you can install AdAway, use Greenify with root and uninstall some system apps. That said it's probably worth steering clear of Xposed and GravityBox since its early days (former is super alpha).
I am eagerly awaiting a way to cleanly strip out all of the Motorola components without leaving any hooks, oddities or references in the Settings Menu or elsewhere. Just for a bit more free RAM. New phone so still enjoying Stock. Tried playing with MyAndroidToolkit(?) to kill wakelocks but didn't know what I was doing so hit the reset button when location services started acting dodgy. Seems 1GB RAM is not enough for me
Do you recommend wiping cache after update?
Thanks!
Hello,
I have had boootloader-unlocked stockrom 4.4.4 and made the ota 5.1 update and i got a message (status 7) while updating and it aborted. Black screen and nothing else. I tried many things - 15 hours long. Phone did not been recognized by PC (unknown device). Now, I tried to charge the phone and it works like nothing happened.
What did i made wrong? Do I have to lock bootloader before updating? How? What is "Status 7"? Is there another method to get lollipop to the phone (with unlocked bootloader)?

Chrome Draining Battery

It seems like since the Nougat update both 7.0 and newest 7.1.1 build I have had significant more battery drain. I know a lot of people have reported battery drain with Nougat. However I have noticed it seems to be mostly related to Chrome sucking most the battery. Even more than the screen and more than the Android OS/System when Chrome is used for majority of the screen on time.
For example today I only had 47 minutes of screen on time and down to 80% battery. Losing 20% battery in 47 minutes SOT seems very excessive for a 3,450mah battery with no gaming. My battery stats showed the following with Chrome way more CPU usage than even the Android OS. See attachments.
Has anyone else experienced this Chrome battery drain with a stock ROM and stock kernel? If so, has anyone had improvement with a custom ROM and/or custom kernel? Or reverting to an older Chrome version? Or maybe any improvements from any other modifications? (Not talking about the typical brightness low, vibrations off, or Bluetooth off.)
Chrome is a notorious resource hog. You might want to try Chrome Beta. If you still aren't happy try Firefox or Opera instead.
Why am I not surprised...Try dolphin or another mentioned browser.
Thanks guys for the suggestions! Chrome didn't used to be THIS bad. I have known Chrome on Windows and Mac OS to be bad, but Chrome has gotten even bad on Android too. Sad it's come to this. I guess I might give Opera try. I never tried it before.

It seems to but I used a couple of different browsers between Chrome and Chrome Beta so I never compared them directly.
Take a look to Tuga Browser!
It's Chromium based...

I used to use Tuga, but Google recently disabled the sync functionality for chromium. I loved the fact that it was very much like Chrome, but with more useful features and more battery friendly. For me, for whatever reason, i like being able to search for something from the home screen and have that search result come up as a suggestion in Chrome later on if i choose to search for it in Chrome. So with Tuga not being able to do that anymore, it's sad...
Here's a photo dump, see attached images. Couple of things to note:
1) My phone has been on roughly an hour longer than yours, with a slightly less overall battery percentage at 82% at the time of the screenshots, and I have considerably more SOT than you (40+ more minutes).
2) I've spent about 30 minutes to an hour "watching" (i.e. listening to) a Youtube video podcast with a static screen at about 20% brightness through my bluetooth headphones, all of which contribute to battery drain.
3) I'm running pure nexus, with glassfish2.1 governor and elementalx kernel 4.04. Also, I have disabled the ability of the stock google apps to have access to "app usage" (google it if you don't know how).
4) My chrome is stock, I haven't noticed any particularly large battery drain, and I do keep syncing of tabs between devices activated.
5) My highest battery drain, next to screen on time ( lately on Nougat) has been android system. Android OS is usually pretty low on the list.
Couple of speculations:
1) Your battery has degraded, and your battery life just isn't good anymore. My phone was recently refurbished through a battery RMA, and the replacement device has been leaps and bounds better than my original device.
2) You might have something else in the background eating into your battery (so check syncs, location services, etc). This is part of why I disabled app usage access to google play and a few other apps. Try a safe mode boot. Try to check for wakelocks. I also use naptime and greenify, but those won't affect your SOT, just your idle states.
Hope that helps you put things into context.

Bandcamp After Nougat...useless

Bandcamp consistently crashes aftet upgrading to nougat, about every 10 min. It happens when I'm browsing my wishlist and streaming at the same time. It seems to lag when switching between screens and ultimately crashes. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the app, makes no difference.
I'm not familiar with Bandcamp, but it might be related to a battery saving feature, which is new to the nougat.
Go into your settings, Battery. Go all the way down until you see "Unmonitored Apps". Try adding the Bandcamp app to this list and try again.
