So the Z4 Compact phone is going to remain 4.6" display, but being bumped to 1920 x 1080 HD. That is awesome. The 10" tablet specs sound amazing, unfortunately, I prefer the 8" tablet size.

a 1080p resolution on a 4.6 display is a total waste. After ~320ppi anything else will just consume more power with no visual benefit.

I totally agree. I think the current 720p screen is beautiful, and if it means subtracting from the awesome battery life (unless battery specs change in Z4C), then it is a total waste. I think they are doing it for the higher pixel density crowd. It is the only negative potential buyers see on the phone because of the new push for higher resolution. I was even turned off initially thinking it was just another watered down compact phone, until I read the reviews in detail of how awesome the display is and all the other specs.
Ahh to get a Z3C or to wait.
I'm more interested in the new sensor for the camera
So im assuming the 801 to 810 is a huge jump.
Wonder what the battery life will be like too.
Im all for increased battery life
It doesn't sound like a dead cert the the Z4 will be coming out in compact form. Sony does usually skip a model with the compact versions.
But the changes rumored for the regular Z4 will be awesome -- Qi charging, exposed micro USB port, no more dedicated magnetic charging port (which will make cases much simpler). That is basically my list of what could be improved on the Z3. Now if only Sony would tell us it will have Gorilla Glass on both sides
So I bought a brand new device day one a month ago and now the successor is announced it's a strange world we're living in....

That's only true if you have average eyesight and you are at least 12" away from the screen. I use my phone and can readily distinguish pixels on my z1c (and its slightly-denser-than-z3c 720p screen) in a variety of situations. There are further issues for rendering most eastern languages, where they can take advantage of >500ppi screens quite easily.
Yes, there are tradeoffs involved, including potentially less battery life, but to say there is "no visual benefit" is simply ignorant. I will welcome the sharper screen, and I know I am not the only one.

I have better-than-average eyesight (about 20-15), and I can barely distinguish individual pixels on my Z3C, and only when holding it too close to my face to actually use. I would consider anything over 300 PPI good enough, and anything over 350 PPI perfect.
The Z4C being 1080p might be a disappointment if it results in a loss of battery life, but maybe they'll improve their battery tech enough to make up for it. In any case, wireless charging will be very nice to have.

I keep hearing that but do you have a source?
Personally the upgrades I want to see in the upcoming Z4C/Z5C are:
Wireless charging/ waterproof usb port
Better camera/curved lens/OIS
Atleast 32GB base storage + sd
Better front facing speakers
MORE battery life
I'm fine with 720p at 4.6 but 1080p would be nice if the battery is increased and the hardware is improved to match (Although imagine an 810 with a 720p screen  )
3GB+ RAM SD 810 or better, yada yada

Don't have the link at hand but the same website said last month that's what their source revealed to them.
Well they could always do what AMD and nVidia do.... rebadge old products.... Then Z3 becomes Z4 compact .

I also have great eyesight and can easily spot the inferior display. But has anyone compared the Z3C to the One m7? I couldn't believe my own eyes when I compared the same HD YouTube video on each display only to see that the Z3C blew the m7 away! ?

There are many things to improve (constrast, brightness etc) in a screen and let's hope they focus on these.
Anyway stuff that i want to see in the upcoming Z4C:
-Same footprint device with 4.6-4.8'' screen @ 720p resolution
-S805,3GB ram 32GB storage+SD
-Better camera and if possible OIS
-2800mah battery
-IR Blaster
-Dual sim
-Single covered port for sim/sd card and water resistant USB port so we can find a decent case
-Matte back as in Z3 tablet compact
-And of course Lollipop out of the box

I would buy this phone in a heartbeat.
EYeah ! Lag will be impossible with that Chipset and
720 but I think they will go higher res anyway.
I do not care if the phone is 10mm thick I want at least a
3000 mah battery.
This Z4 if ruggedly built may be a 2 year type phone , so
wonderfully overspecced.
Hope it's rugged Device and fully engineered Camera this time with digital and OIS.
I will pay tops for this, then I won't wish for a Note 4 Compact / Alpha type thing....
Love to see a full 810 in a Compact !
More wattage than HTC Speakers and maybe Kevlar Drivers like tiny studio monitors -already waterproof.
I'm not sure such wish lists of components and features will ever actually fit in such a small phone. But we can dream
Actually I think this can be produced given the fact that since 2 years the motherboard is smaller and smaller

Recently released with very little fanfare, unsure of global availability.
4.7" display, Snapdragon 808, 3gb RAM, 1080p Display, 2800mha battery, 13 MP camera, Water and dust resistant.
Could call it a Z5 compact pro?

I wouldn't call it a compact pro, snapdragon 808 is far from the 810, the 100 mAh difference won't counter the fact that need it needs to drive four times as many pixels but the IGZO screen might help a bit but I rather go with the IPS screen. While the Z5 series camera seems to have some issues (most likely software) 13MP is a far cry from 23. The RAM is nice but doubt it will do much difference in the long run.
I could maybe see it as an alternative to the Z5C but it is in no way it's superior, it's also IP67 (from what info I can find) which is a far cry from IP65 and IP68 even though Sony has gone back a bit on their marketing for it.
Very nice little phone but like they said above, that FHD display will require more juice to run, despite being IGZO. I seriously don't feel a need for more pixels on the Z5 display, it looks great already and I'd rather the GPU performance and battery life be boosted than just more pixels. It's also a shame about the 16GB internal storage. The RAM is the only real specification that makes me envious, even then I'm quite content with the Z5C multitasking so far. It's great to see another high-spec compact phone though.
What's Sharp's track record with OS updates like? That's the real question here I think. Sony has proven to support their Z series well and we already know they are busy working on the Marshmallow update.
its no competition because sharp only aims for the asian market.
There needs to be more competition in this market. I'm still plenty satisfied with my Z3C and while neither the Z5C nor the Aquos Compact are a big enough step up for me to consider upgrading, I'm glad that another player as entered.
I held an old HTC Incredible S the other day and it felt oh so good! If HTC could just get their heads of out their butts and develop a decent phone again (not a phablet), I would run back to them in a hurry.

I would be even more interested in the Z5C if it had those specs. I don't understand why the Compact is still the only real flagship in a smaller size. No one else seems interested in competing with Sony.

I actually bought a sharp aquos shv31 that was a hare smaller than my z1 compact, and a beautiful full 1080p display. Problem is they lock the apn to their austrailan market and apparently use some onerous anti-root methods that no one has broken it open. I have to send back as its useless with no data, but I totally love the sharp phone otherwise. I really wish they would put out an unlocked version, as I ended up buying a z5 compact to replace my z1c, and already waiting to hate the fact I'm going to lose most of its features when I unlock/root it.

Yes, I also owned Z1c and Z5c now. Was also looking forward on sharp phones but nowadays they are very hard to root, so a no go to me.
I didn't make this video. I wanted to share it since I found that the video shows the true potential of the Xperia X series.
Display is a lot better than the normal Xperia Z5(fhd).
You will see a difference in the camera quality as well.

Really looks like an exciting device. Just about the same size as the N5, but a little heavier...metal back and general Sony goodness. I love it - sold.
Would be nice if it was available sometime before 2017 though. In the US. With regular software security updates.

Source? I still believe there will be a Z6 as the 2016 sony flagship at the end of the year.
The Z5 is still very new as it's only been out for a few months right? I believe Sony stated that they will only release 1 flagship phone instead of the usual 2 per year. Also i believe the X series are being advertised as "mid-ranged" phones (Besides the Xperia X performance ofc)

I wouldn't count that as a reliable source. But if that is true then the xperia x performance is pretty much an xperia z6 in disguise.
Why would they make a Z6 if they have the XP? Lol. XP is the new flagship.
I hope the X is only around $400. I've always just wanted a mid-range phone with a high end camera. Only thing that stopped me from getting the Nexus 5X was no sd-card and my Z3 is still good.
imho sony really messed up the pricing on this ones :| 599eur for the x with a 1080p 5" screen , snapdragon 650 and 2600mah battery???? what are they thinking?
699eur for the x performance sounds a little better with the snapdragon 820 but spending 700eur to upgrade from my z2 to this is not worth it for me unless a z6 is announced with better specs my next phone probably won't be a sony :crying:

Sony just lost me as a customer.... x series brings nothing new, the prices are crazy and since Z series is dead that's it for me.
My next device will probably be a xiaomi mi5 pro or the lg g5. I'm not in a hurry to upgrade my z2 (still a great phone 2 years later) so i'll wait until the mi5 and g5 are released to see how the xda community reacts to them i need to be sure their bootloaders can be unlocked and custom roms are available before i consider any of them.

So a LETTER was what you chose Sony for in the first place. Wow.
The smoothness of the OS, the camera, the great Aosp support of existing devices nor even the water/dust rating with almost a decade legacy of doing this in their phones, nor even the quality audio and accessories being innovative.
Sure go a ahead and deal with the competition. Personally it would be smarter to stick with Sony getting the Z line even 6 months from now as support under warranty will still continue until all sales of that device stopped.
Where do you kids think life and products are about? Change is inevitable! Get over the letter "X" drove huge success for Sony 6yrs ago why not try to repeat that.
It's a VRRY crowded market and consolidation the screen size is smart. Making the phones interact with us as humans is genius because looking down at my phone for a total of 3hrs combined a day feels unnatural in my neck - I do body build!
I want real world performance not a spec sheet that doesn't perform!!
I just bought a Z5 full retail and I'm very happy. I'll get the Z5C as a backup especially when travelling. I'll see the upgrade to the Xperia X Performance or whatever Sony brings next year. Not going to cry over spilt milk cause they made a very conscious and rational change in their product lineup.

AHAH do you work at sony marketing and you got offended by my opinion? Cause your post makes no sense otherwise... When i bought my z2 almost 2 years ago it was THE top notch device. 3GB RAM, snapdragon 801, great screen, comfortable size, nice front stereo speakers, waterproof, huge battery, the best camera at the time, etc. It was very easy to justify it's flagship price and i still love the damn phone almost two years later.
Obviously i don't care about letters, naming or brands, i care about specs, functionality and price. That's were the X series fails for me because it brings nothing new to the table except slightly upgraded hardware. my biggest problem with the X series is the price range sony is placing the devices at giving it's specs, nothing else. I don't feel like an X performance is worth 700eur to upgrade from my Z2 (i would get a better cpu and camera, nothing else...i can get a z5p for less than 600eur and it still feels like a better option than the x for me).
IF you feel like it's worth it buy it, enjoy it, and stop criticizing other people opinions. I don't have a sentimental attachment to any brand so it's easy for me to choose the device that fits my needs for the best price am i not free to do that?
Honestly if i change to another brand the only thing i'll miss it's the great dev community sony has here at xda. and that doesn't include you obviously

But going by your own logic there, the Xperia X is a worthy flagship, no?
It has the fastest cpu,
It has the fastest ram
It has improved screen,
It has stereo speakers
And the improved camera.
Take it from me, I have no intention in buying X, because I have Z5p. But come IFA, the letter won't mean jack if the specs match my expectations of a flagship.
Sent from my E6853 using Tapatalk
@corallus
It has the fastest cpu --> check (x performance only)
It has the fastest ram --> only 3gb, benchmarks not available yet so not sure it'll be the fastest ram available.
It has improved screen --> maybe be improved color wise but it's smaller and the same technology.
It has stereo speakers --> check (and if i go to another brand i'll definitively miss the front stereo speakers a LOT )
And the improved camera --> somewhat, will have to see after the device is released
For a sony 2016 flagship i think it's missing usb 3.0 connectivity (deal breaker for me in 2016) , a bigger battery, 4gb of ram and at the very least 64gb of FAST internal storage. Wireless charging and an ir blaster would be an welcome bonus but not a deal breaker.
The screen size drop to 5.0" makes no sense to me either especially given the 68.1% screen-to-body ratio. 5.2 or 5.5" as in z5p would be fine.
AGAIN i'll have to reinforce I NEVER said the x series is a sh*t device (quote me if a did), i'm just stating my personal opinion that it doesn't feel like a true flagship, especially for the 700eur price.
Anyway this will be the last post i'll make on this thread. I have only stated MY opinion, i've not been aggressive/stupid and i did not make any personal attack against anyone. I don't know why some people are turning this into a personal war, and i do have better stuff to do with my time so i'm out.

Spoken like a true child.
My post makes perfect sense but I see already you're beginning to backpedal from someone whom just quoted you. I'll break it down for you.
1. only a child on forums (cliché of the last 4yrs) claims someone who doesn't agree with their opinion about a brand works for said brand (first bold quote above). Hence why I said grow up!
2. When i bought my z2 almost 2 years ago it was THE top notch device
^ I stated that sales are affecting Sony's decision here to consolidate screen size and the specs along with shipping times and the brand sub-model here. SPECIFICATIONS like Skills or knowledge means nothing. It's sales to a company that continues to be a going-concern (accounting term) to make revenues that turn into profits and when sales don't go in that regard changes are inevitable for good or for worse, get used to this regardless if you don't like or do like the device ... change is here and in perfect timing. And like skills or knowledge both mean nothing without the means and the will to act ... using them (like drawing talent in a child that doesn't wish to pursue a career in that regard, drawing or visual arts is a useless skill).
3. great screen, comfortable size, nice front stereo speakers, waterproof, huge battery
Xperia Z5 Premium boasted the best screen (at least in terms of resolution and ppi).
The LG G Pro also released in April 2014 as teh Z2 had Li-Ion 3200 mAh battery http://www.gsmarena.com/lg_g_pro_2-6052.php
having a huge battery ... means nothing if the cpu, screen, storage and ram guzzles. Battery consumption efficiency and recharging efficiency is KEY because it's all about using the device.
4. Price ... this is a HUGE concern for what you get. No disagreements here from me ... BUT I did specifically state it's about getting more sales but more profits (the key) for Sony.
3 phones all sharing 5" LCD displays and resolution
All have the same storage options - consolidating and benefiting on economies of scale.
what you get vs what you loose in bold below. I've left out the battery because nobody knows the talk-time (continuous) standby time or continuous video/music playback times between the two on a production phone BUT if it increases you may reconsider.
XPeria X Performance (slightly smaller by dimensions but not Z5 Compact
5.0 inches (~68.1% screen-to-body ratio)
1080 x 1920 pixels (~441 ppi pixel density)

At the end of the day your opinions are yours to make ... just stop being so childish about it and realize you can VOTE with your hard earned cheddar! Seems you didn't get this the first time around.
Why the fight?
I agree with @ptmaniac that its a decent phone; but its targeted for mid-rangers because the price is definitely a deal-breaker for specs like that of mid-2015.
Sony has made VERY GOOD phones in the past but coming up with X series with little to no improvements - puts the deal off. (4gb RAM, AMOLED Screen, at-least Better photo Quality on your phones when you use the same sensor you distribute to others) (My Note5, costing lesser, will defeat XP on all grounds. Wait till the phone comes in market and check out the comparison people do).
I myself have been a user of Z1 Compact (A true mini flagship) for 1.5 years, but NOW Sony doesn't feel like they are giving any value-for-money devices.
+1 on the support for Sony devices on xda. Kudos to every1 on that.
Its a personal opinion in the end. You want to buy, please go ahead and enjoy
We just dont feel like spending 700 for a mid-ranger specd phone.
Don't say we when you mean you. Again its a difference of opinion and view. Not a fight. We've already worked out our views in PM. No need to investigate.
The Z5compact is also a true small form flagship device: none has the same 810 CPU with 2GB ram and 32GB internal storage! None.
Since you're talking about a 3generation old phone you haven't seen value for the dollar in almost 3yrs not sure how you're even mentioning about this product. You mention awaiting for comparison but state camera should be better? Conundrum?
X Compact is coming up on IFA 2016

I think the design is a bit more like Nokia Lumia. Not much info yet but leaking info. said 2700Mah, S650, 4.6" IPS, usb type-c, 3GB ram.

Plus Sony FES Watch looks coming soon too.
They have lost their minds. Wide range of phones with specs from mid range to premium, but still premium with their prices.

yup, Sony is over priced, they are always expensive. I would like to know any new features or quality improvement on camera. I won't get a new compact now but if the camera is great this time, I may get it next year when it become cheaper.
Another problem is s650 get used, not s820 so we'll not supported by AndroPlus Kernel again(we need donate a x compact for AndroPlus).
The Z5C was the last great phone from Sony.

CPU speed is roughly the same but s810 GPU is much faster than s650(only at S808 GPU level). So, the cpu actually is a downgrade but 3GB ram is useful. S650 should be more heat friendly but Z5c is fine after rooted and lower cpu clock.
What exactly is compact about this phone? The bezel size is one of the worst I've ever seen on a phone.

It's likely a prototype bit probably not far off. This phone wouldnt make sense to buy over a 6s being that big.

The Sony Mobile Czech site has confirmed that the two handsets to launch at IFA next week will be called the Xperia XZ and Xperia X Compact. Looks like Sony has found a way to get the ‘Z’ branding back into its phones to denote the flagship device.
LOL .... X & Z = XZ

so true!!
Z5C faster also better GPU basemark X z5c= 30K , X = 15K ,50% less ( regular Z5=23K) compact faster because screen resolution is720P and not 1080P
at CPU level only when the heat start to kick, X will faster from Z5 (really by little bit and not always)
only x performance has faster cpu but for gaming its the same, again because the resolution: look at the result i uploaded
the only "down side" for Z5c is low RAM . but they say for 720P resolution 2GB its good enough , (although already reached only 250MB free RAM on really heavy games)
i wonder if Z5 will have the same free RAM with the same games

The XC prototype should be sd650 and retail ver still have chance to use sd820 but I think the whole idea is switch to a cheaper CPU and free up budget to get 3GB ram. Overall a fair trade. Some rumors claimed XC will use 4.6" FHD if that is ture together with s650 will got a big performace hit on gaming and probably battery life even worse than Z5c.
I think Sony MM memory management not optimized or MM really consumed more ram, or both. We can only debloat the rom and use greenify donated to free up more ram.
Gaming on 720P will use texture at a lower resolution.
Sony Xperia X Compact goes official
Snapdragon 650? So the compact is now midrange? Sigh

Mid range and not so compact. In other news I bought my first iPhone yesterday and put my Sony up for sale.
Well, at least z5c will be even more cheaper... Kaz, who ever is a head of sony mobile needs to be shot to the sun with a cannon and a switch has to be done. I see vaio destiny for Sony mobile.
Anyone think Sony will price this mid-ranger at $300? Yeah, probably not but I hope to be proved wrong.
The XC is ****, jeez. How bad are they wanting to get their phones...
I'm ranking XC as better than Z5C :
XC > Z5C :
slightly same cpu performance and better heat dicipation
better gpu performance
3gb of ram
better camera performance
better fingerprint reader
usb type-C
better design (personal taste)
support will last longer
XC < Z5C:
no ip68 (like other oem's cared before pfff)
type of ram (DDR3)
plastic instead of frosted glass (really liked the feel of it)
If the price stays bellow 400$ Xperia X Compact is a really good phone and I will buy it

Really only camera is better (?) in x compact. Not worth an upgrade.

Both SD650 and SD810 only used 28nm HPM but SD650 replaced the big core from A57 to A72(and reduced to Hexcore) should improve hot issue and battery life but I don't expect as much improvement of SD820. SD810 GPU much faster bcoz SD650 gpu only identical to SD808 gpu.
I don't like the XC design, I think my Z1c and Z5c much better but the color on XC looks good.
Sony removed 4K recording from XC though we can enable 4K with root just like other X series's phones but we got to use 3rd apps to shoot 4K. Hence, the new 5-axis steadyshot is only available to FHD bcoz 3rd apps can't use it.
Official support from Sony is longer but I doubt we will get many support from XDA this time bcoz our CPU is different now and just can't port from XZ directly like we did on Z1c, Z3c and Z5c.
Correction:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-x-performance/how-to/root-how-to-enable-sonys-4k-video-t3406075
XC should be able to use official 4K sony app with root follow this method but not sure if the 5-axis steadyshot still work.

Yes. It's safe to say only 3GB ram and camera is better and others are downgraded. I would like to see how good of the new camera bcoz I don't satisfy with Z5c.
If they real improve the camera, I may switch to XC next year but really, I don't think worth to do it, sticking with Z5c and wait XC2 is a better choice for most of us.
As I'm owning an Xperia Z5, since a year and a half, I still find that the Z was the most popular and really well supported device, so many ROMs, kernels, mods, themes and just everything, even Sony supported it for a long period of time, but the biggest part was the people who spent hours to make the best for it, it's such a legend, made by Sony, and the people continued to make it better.
It's a bit sad that I am pretty disappointed with my Z5, it didn't make me happy like the Z, and from the development side? It's nothing compared to what the Z has gotten..
Thanks for reading and have a great day!

I know, and I still using it for daily.
May I know details of every things that make you disappointed on your Z5? Because I have a plan to upgrade my device, either Z5c or the latest XZ1c.

The Z5 lacks a lot of development and support, if you don't care about that then it's not the only issue, the Snapdragon 810 literally sucks! A lot of heat (running at over 50°C all the time) and terrible performance for an octa core CPU, Especially in games, even some cheap Chinese phones performance better, however it's an improvement over the Z, just not that much of an improvement as I expected.
It's not the phone's fault, just the Snapdragon 810 chip, and it's not the only one.
However I highly recommend avoiding any device with a Snapdragon 810 CPU because of the heat, bad performance and battery draining (I barely get 3 hours of screen on time), and I also recommend getting the Xperia XZ Premium, it has a 4K screen and a bigger battery unlike the XZ1 line.
More about the Z5:
Screen: meh, it has a blueish tint that makes the whites aren't so white, the TFT screen on the Z was better except outdoors.
Camera: good but not great, especially indoors, pretty noisy, 4K recording isn't so wow and the 120fps slow motion is too dark and low quality IMO, But it does pretty well in good lighting conditions.
Speakers: not so good, but I was able to get them louder after installing a mod.
Software: the Android 7.1.1 is the last update that the device will probably get, the nougat was a failure on the Z5 and XZ though, so I'm still using marshmallow.
So it's a fine device at the end but if you can go for newer devices like the XZ Premium then you better do!

I know about SD810 heating problem. It sucks, but till now, only Z5 family available in my country (so sad). XZ premium was great but I don't like a phone that has screen more than 5 inch. That's why I'm looking for XZ1c. 4K screen is not a big deal for me.
Thanks for sharing.

I don't think the XZ1c would disappoint you either, it has nearly the same hardware as the XZP except for the screen and battery, and also, wait for them to come to your country, don't be in hurry.
