It was suggested that we start a thread specifically for the apps that run well on the Android port to the HTC Touch/Vogue. I personally own an (Sprint=CDMA) HTC Touch Diamond, but upon seeing the maturity level of Android running on the Touch, I immediately went to eBay and picked up the Touch handset...and I am glad I did. The only reason I boot back to winmo is for work calendar (Lotus), Skype (iSkoot kinda sucks), and Podcasts (hopefully we getting DoggCatcher soon).I've found that battery life with Togga on to be about 8-10 hours which I can live with it, but it's a pain to keep toggling if you really need to conserve (but it could be worse )I plan on posting more battery data soon, but need a few more days of collection. Hopefully we can find a more permanent way of managing the data connection with balance for battery life.

The apps I have found to run well on my CDMA with dzo/f00bar's (much respect) latest files:
-Scoreboard - I'm not that big of a sports fan, but this app is slick!
-aLastFM - Just got permission to post the link from the developer. Thanks Oleg!!
-Stocker - Simple but effective stock app, but no graphs. If someone could find a better one...
-Weather - Simple, but effective. Multiple Cities, current and forecast, with menu link to detailed outlook including radar from Undergroud Weather.
-AnyCut -Great for making shortcuts to just about any screen in the OS, especially useful for Battery and Sounds&Display
-TextEasy - for sending a text to multiple contacts, until someone can get a hold of ChomperSMS or K9SMS (K9Mail I have not gotten to work either, we need a better mail app, the native client doesn't even recognize URLS, wtf?!)
-OIFileManager - It's the only one I've tried, so can't comment on the others, but there are several out there. UPDATE: I tried out Astro and Glance. I liked Astro, but after a day it stopped working for me and gives me a force quit. I prefer Glance over OI FileManager, it's on 4shared I believe.
-OIFlashlight - amazing how handy this comes in
-OINewsReader - No frills RSS aggregator
-ShopSavvy - Did you say "We'll match any price"?...but be fast with your fingers, camera is not fine enough to capture the barcode

The Meebo app is well worth a look - look for it on 4shared.com. Lets you IM on just about any IM network (Yahoo, MSN, AIM etc). IMs appear in the notification bar while you are in any other program. Great stuff.
I believe im the only person hosting the meebo.apk at the moment.

i installed and signed into my MSN account, however, just a white screen shows up. No list of contacts, etc. No menu options other than to add another account or sign off. Not exactly useful (at least this version). Is anyone using this successfully?
EDIT: I received a chat, and that gave me a buddy online, maybe no one on my list was signed on at the time I first checked.
Also, it doesnt remember your username and password, which is annoying because it randomly closed on me after tapping the notification in the bar during a chat session today. I'll keep looking for a better app or updated version.

What about an updated version of Shopsavvy. Mine keeps saying there is a new version, but of course we can't update off the marketplace.
I'm looking for the Locale application. Even though we don't have GPS running, Locale still alows profile switching based on time and days of the week, which would be useful for office vs. non-office settings. If someone could post this I would appreciate it!

If they are in the AndroidApps folder then they should be installed already. I found that sometimes icons don't show up to launch the program, however. This is where AnyCut comes in handy. Use AnyCut to search in "Activities" to find your app. If you are not seeing it in this list then you may have to "manually" install the app. Open a file browser such as OI File Manager or Glance and navigate to your AndroidApps folder. Click on the .apk file and it should launch teh app installer.

There's been a couple apps I liked that didn't fit our screen plus having to reinstall android files often I lose all my saved info so it doesn't work out for me. Sprint needs to hurry up with an HTC Android phone.
Maybe a stupid question, not sure... Why can't someone extract the android market application from the G1 to be used on other phones? Seems a bit odd of Google to limit the market to only a specific phone.
There is a discussion about the marketplace on the big long forum. The marketplace is not open source. They're talking about the commands and encryption and such for it. I'd think it's not open because they plan on having pay for apps but I could be wrong

I noticed this also. i resolved by changing my time zone in settings. Only problem is that this then modifies your "synced" time with your carrier, it adjusts + or - according to your time zone, so you have to comensate...each time you boot. Not by any means an elegant solution, but if you need realtime scores this is the answer. Probably better off sticking with NHL.com

I tried the "Ebay.apk" from 4Shared, but it doesn't display properly. The tabs extend all the way to the bottom of the other screen which is a common problem for us vogue port users.
People are probably going to flame this thread for me saying this but what the heck.....
there have been countless threads about how to remove, replace, and/or delete system apps and their functions. And with a little searching you will find there are many answers.
At the least I should say, is that system apps can be removed, however; there are certain ones that should not be removed because it will break your system....that's been established already, duh?, yes I know...but here is what my point is to cover:
The system apps that were known to be removed with no problem are calendar, clock, IM, mail, work email, and other little third party apps added to the system by whatever Dev made the rom,
and the ones recommended that SHOULD NOT be removed are main phone functioning apps such as..Mms, Music, Dialer, Contacts, Camera and so on ad so forth,
Well that is correct. Those can't be removed, but yes they can be replaced and no it will not break the system.
I use Handcent sms as my default Mms, the original system version is removed.
I use Meridian music player as my default Music app, the original system version is removed,
I use Camera zoom Pro, as my original Camera app, the original system version is removed.
So in a nutshell, I basically chose all the stable 3rd party phone functioning apps that I use daily and made them replacements to the default system versions, so I don't have two music apps, two message apps, two camera apps and so on.
Did it break my stability?, Crash my phone?, Cause crazy reboots? Screw with the incoming and outgoing calls,tex, and mms?
The answer is no, no, no, and NO. Everything is fine. I have been doing this for a long time now, so this is not some new technique that I have only tested once, on one rom.
I have replaced every system app except dialer, there is really no replacement for that in my opinion that is worthy. Contacts I have replaced before with a 3rd party app called phone book. It worked. But it crashed, because Contact and Dialer go hand in hand, so to successfully replace one you would have to replace the other...my recommendation, don't screw around with those. Besides, Devs implement constant updates and new features to those in every build anyway.
I will more than happily share my method of replacement in a new thread over in the the apps forum if anyone is interested, but feel free to share your opinions, experiences, and your own personal methods here.....
and if enough users request, I will create a "How to" for everyone later.

My point is that your "discovery" is one of the VERY BIGGEST defining design features of the android platform. This is nothing new and nothing that even lacks understanding. WE ALREADY KNOW ALL THIS!!!

Couldn't you just replace the files (/system/app) in any ROM and resign and flash?

BINGO!^^ that's exact same way I do it, however there is another method I'd like to share, just don't have the time to type it up,
note to those who don't know when replacing the apps, rename the apk the same as the original, so if you want GDE for your home replacement, remove the original Launcher.apk then drop in GDE and rename it Launcher.apk....very important step, you will get unstoppable reboots and freezing.
Its called Terminal Emulator.

dude read the topic, Im talking about replacing not removing, so if you're going to post commands then put one up on how to replace an app already running from data partition to system/data replacing the one already there I.E. handcent(data partition) replaces Mms.(system/data)....otherwise you're not helping, No sh**t, I know everyone knows that but dont know this....so
for those who don't give a dam for codes and commands, or screwing with zips and resigning...patiently wait and I will post easiest method- you can do it right from your phone, without even rebooting!

Or you can just put em in the data/app directory and delete the apk in the system/app directory. still not that hard =/ a lot of people already know how to do this as well.

Well I wasn't assuming that I had re-invented something or made an all new discovery...Im pretty sure everything around here has had atleast a dozen how to threads, and everyone, after a little research should pretty much know how to do everything, I admit

For those of ya with some type of root explorer this would be the preferable procedure for you
go to the /data/apps directory select the apk that you would like to use for replacement, such as Meridian music player, rename it to music.apk
then copy
navigate to system/data/apps directory, paste...it should say it already exist and would you like to replace click yes.
Done. Do the same for any other system app, by renaming it as original, copy and replace.
Be sure to put system in Read/Write or this won't work.
That's it. Simple, brief, and no problem.
For those who also put their input into this thread I thank you for your time..your knowledge is noted and appreciated.

well good link... i dont follow cyanogen and i know how to delete apps. what i am after is replacing the sys apps with third party apps... i am sure it is more involved than pushing to /system/app... hence i asked for a tut

I have a rooted NST. Sometimes, when I search for an app that I know exists, it does not show up in the market. It also says the app is incompatible with my nook. I remember seeing a post somewhere here to a chrome addon that allows you to download the .apk directly from the market (piracy.. I know, but this is for a good cause) but I can't find it. Sorry if this does not make any sense, normally I am good at grammar, but.. yeah.

There are a couple of things (at least) that can cause an app not to show in market. To know exactly what's up, you'd have to tell us which apps.
The first thing to keep in mind is that the NST is running Android 2.1 'eclair'. A LOT of apps -- many of my favorites -- have been written for Android 2.2. 'froyo' or above. These probably will not work, no matter what you try.
Other apps care about the device type. Some are hardcoded to only work on specific devices. You can sometimes get these to work by spoofing your device to appear as another. Other times, you can download the .apk on another device, then transfer it to your NST. There's no guarantee these will work, however.
Depending on how you configured your device, you may simply have to clear market data and cache to restore full visibility (subject to the above constraints).
List a couple of specific apps and we might be able to give you a better answer.

I know the guy IRL, and apps I can get on my Nook don't show up in his market, whether it's the app or market.android.com. I have no idea what's going on.
Which is why all I need is the link to that chrome addon that allows you to download the .apk from the market.

EDIT: Never mind, I was wrong, you get the option of choosing which account to use as the person below me has said.
I have a second Google account on my Desire Hd.
Its not much of an issue, when you are using google apps eg. YouTube, G+, Gmail you get a choice of which account you want to use and you can logout and choose the other whenever you want.
Syncing is not a problem either, whichever account you pick when you make changes they will be saved to only that account.
My YouTube widget changes depending on which account i am using when i exit the YouTube app.

I use multiple Google accts on my phone (ICS/CM9). Sync'ing, etc works just fine. Whenever it gets to a point where you have to choose the account you want something under, it prompts you. The issue/solution for me for Facebook (for my wife & I) will likely be Friendcaster (which allows multiple accts).
I was thinking more about choosing an user after waking-up the tablet. Just like windows has. One for me, other for my wife.
The perfect solution would be face to unlock, but I don't think it would be avaliable soon.
Tablets feel like windows 98 all over again. I guess this is because of their phone roots (the thought being one user owns a phone). But with tablets, many want to share.
As your example of you and your wife. Or even security. I'm at my bro's and my nephew wants to play with my tablet, and he's pretty responsible, but he could actually start reading/deleting my email, uninstall apps, buy apps via google market. Btw, I expressly choose never to save anything to google wallet, I've only made a few purchases and have been careful of this, but last thing I bought, my credit card info was all ready to go. Sigh.
But yes not only would I like multi-users I would like to make others have limited functionality, as in they can't install/uninstall apps etc. Even a simple thing like letting my nephew play a game I was in the middle of playing, well he cleared all the stages so I have to remember which stage I was on each time I launch it, or clear them all and start over.
But I suspect it'll be this way for a long time.

Wow... I wasn't aware of that app, either. This is from one of the reviews, though:
Log out does not really work like Windows where you log out and then select another user but rather you have to go into the App and say SWITCH user. Once you do SWITCH user, you actually have to wait for the device to reboot into the other user so it is not running multiple instances

I'd think that if the dev on this app could get help from or work with the devs on the popular launchers, better integration would ensue... Like the review said, though... great start...
I've actually installed this app and ran it. You do have to reboot whenever you "switch" which for me isn't a big deal. I haven't had a chance to mess with it too much yet but it looks like the closest option to running multiple accts. From what I can tell you can add a pic for each profile and u can choose which acct to load which is nice, but the lite version only allows 2 profiles, you have to buy a key for more.
1 caution though, it may mess things up a bit with the play store. I tried buying a key after switching back to my profile, and I got an error saying my order could not be processed try again. I'm going to give it some time & try again in a few hours & see what happens.
Using it now too. Seems pretty cool. Seeing as EVERYONE loves wanting to see your phone. LoL!! There is an experimental switch feature that swtiches without rebooting, but I'm not too sure that's working just yet. LoL!!

I noticed that switching to a different profile doesn't retain apps between users. Say for instance on the admin profile (mine), I have Plex purchased and installed. On the newly created profile with a different account, it doesn't show up in the apps page (which makes sense because it's a different account). This could become a problem for those with the 8gb model (like myself) where you might have duplicate apps installed based on the user(s) which would take up more space. I think for the sake of saving space, it may be wise for me to install only maintenance/tool type apps on the admin profile for tablet management, then, anything else (games, productivity etc) can be tied to the newly created profile so that I'm not duplicating installed apps.
Can anyone that has done this estimate how much space an extra profile consumes? My 8 GB nexus 7 stock out of the box has ~5.75 GB available. Will adding a second profile consume another ~2 GB plus any additional apps, data, etc? I'm hoping that some of that 2 GB is due to medium format, and other reserved space...
I'm new to the android platform. Coming from using an iPhone for years, I pretty much have no idea how to use it properly. It's going to take me a while to get used to it. But I'm working on it. I just have a few questions.
I believe I successfully rooted my Samsung Galaxy s4, using motochopper. I followed the instructions to the T and now see the Superuser icon on my screen.
My first question is, are there any tips with this learning curve, going from an iPhone to an Android. The texting seems to be the most to get used to so far. I also notice Instagram and Facebook apps are totally different, and it looks like I cannot edit photos inside the Facebook app for Android?
Anyway, with the iPhone I would jailbreak, and use cydia to get my paid apps for free, or my tweaks, or customizations. How do I do this with Android?
My next question is a pretty stupid one I'm sure to most but not to me. How do I sync music, and photos, to my Android? With the iPhone I made a folder of images, and synced that folder and all subfolders with the iPhone through iTunes. Is there a simple way to do the same with the Android? Can I just create a folder inside the Pictures folder, and it will show up on the phone?
I appreciate anyones help and I'm sure I will have more questions just can't think of them at this moment.

I'll address this question as i'm unfamiliar with the iPhone and i don't use my phone for music so i don't know what the best methods are.
Rooting and jailbreaking are slightly different things. On the iphone, you are locked to iTunes and jailbreaking allows you to install apps from an alternative source (Like cydia). On an android phone, you just need to place a check mark in the setting "Unknown Sources" of your security settings, this will allow the phone to accept apps from any location, there are alternative markets to the play store f-Droid and amazon come to mind so rooting is not needed for this.
Rooting is gaining administrative rights to your phone and can let you do some spectacular things with your phone that would otherwise be impossible. With root access, applications have the ability to modify the system files, say for example, edit the host files to block most advertising, or edit yoru build.prop to make the play store think you are from a different provider. You can allow programs to back up other programs (Titanium backup is a fine example).
The developers on android work hard and should be rewarded for their work. I do block advertising, but i make a point of paying for the apps that i do use.

The developers on android work hard and should be rewarded for their work. I do block advertising, but i make a point of paying for the apps that i do use.

Hey there, thanks so much for the clarification.
I wasn't aware of the differences between Jailbreaking and Rooting. That definitely clears some things up. So I would mostly have no need for rooting, as I don't need to do anything you mentioned above and doubt I would ever have a need to edit or alter host or system files.

I just want to make that clear, I am just trying to learn how to do the things I did on my iPhone, on this phone. I am not trying to find out how to steal hardwork from others. I do end up paying for the apps I keep.

You might be surprised. Root is needed for some changes. To give you another example, our phones, due to the nature of AMOLED are fantastic at displaying a deep black *and* save on power when using black backgrounds. Gmail app, is all white background with black text. There exists a "blacked out" version of gmail that has the colors inverted and many people tend to prefer this over the standard gmail.
Root access let's be backup things that are otherwise impossible to backup, things like the android ID (Used by many applications to individually identify a phone), phone logs, SMS messages and such. Games like farmville and Paradise Island will use the androidd ID to see if you moved your game to a new phone, invalidating the install and forcing you to start from anew (And maybe buying more in-app purchases).
Some applications are limited to certain countries or certain providers, so using an app like Market Enabler allows you to change where you appear to be from, to by-pass regional blocks.
Root is also needed to tweak the appearance of android, if you want the clock gone from your menu, you can remove it, you can change the battery icon there. You can remove your network provider from the lock screen (or rename it to something silly like i did).
On the flip side, some applications (like google wallet) may not work properly if root is detected, so it can be a toss up.
Me, personally, i use root mainly for 2 apps, adaway and titanium backup. Titanium backup also syncs to my dropbox, so i have now gotten to the point where i should never have to plug a wire into my phone.
Looks to me that you are still in love with your iPuke. You will find that if you do not root, you won't be able to do alot of things. If you are trying to turn an android into a iPuke..then whats the point. Learn what the android can do, you will find that it is all you want it to be.

Sometimes it's best to ignore....
In regards to music.. look into the Google music app, personally I'm big into radio, so I use an app called tunein allot. Personally, I would just dump the music onto the phone through Windows explorer and see how it goes from there
Something else to keep in mind,a lot of the apps you are familiar with will be available in the play store. Do a good start is to look for familiar titles

I uploaded all my 320kbps music which I had in iTunes directly to the Google Play Music server, where you can access all of your songs on any device supporting the app, or in any web browser. You can also download copies to your devices for offline play. The all access feature of Google Play Music is nice as well, they have virtually every song I've searched for available on demand as well as download for offline use, for $7.99/month.
