Ditching my XT926M - RAZR HD General

I have set my order for the Asus Zenfone 2. I had the Motorola Droid RAZR MAXX HD for 1 month and a half. I most certainly hated this phone due to the fact that it came with the latest firmware and could not unlock the bootloader because I love custom ROMs. I had too many issues with this phone. :crying:

That's why you do research and ask questions before buying a phone that already has available firmware update that locks it down

I rooted mine with hydrogen peroxide, removed bloatware with titanium backup, and installed nova launcher, xposed framework and gravitybox for customization. I have about all the features and appearance I had in CM 11 on a different phone, and I'm pretty happy despite being stuck with a locked bootloader.
There's always a way, people are tenacious.

[POLL] Have you unlocked your bootloader?

I was interested, after reading the thread "are you satisfied with your TF300?" to see just the proportion of owners that unlocked their bootloader, as this could have implications with the speed of development. I also noticed how many users said they were not satisfied when their tablet was stock, but became more satisfied when it was running a custom ROM. It seems to me that some people are unsatisfied with the stock ROM, but don't wish to unlock the bootloader and void the warranty meaning they wont be able to send it back should there be a problem, or sell it on for maximum retail value.
Please choose one of the options above, thanks! (It would also be interesting to post your thoughts on how this affected your satisfaction with the tablet)

I cant use a device w/o root... Same day they released the unlock bootloader I unlocked my device! All my android phones are rooted and or unlocked the day I got it.

I did not unlock. I figured I will leave it stock until jellybean comes out and see how that goes. I did root though. Gotta have that.

I have unlocked and installed the Hydro ROM (see the development section) . It is smoother for sure, no browserlag any more.
First I made sure to have root, so that I could backup my current applications and their settings with Titanium backup. Then I installed TWRM, the modern equivalent of Clock Work Mod, to backup the stock ROM. By taking these precautions the riscs of creating a mess are fairly reduced.
I also used the stock ROM for approximately 6 weeks, to be sure that the hardware was alright and that the chances of needing Asus support in the coming year were small.
Unlocked and rooted the day I got the tablet. Been happily running Hydro since its release.
Still locked bootloader here but rooted off course. I'm waiting for official jellybean
If you are completely satisfied with your device, then don't tinker with it by rooting and unlocking. However, if you unlock the device and install a custom recovery, then it becomes very difficult to brick the tf300. You can almost always come back to a working stock official rom with a custom recovery by simply flashing the software directly downloaded from the ASUS website. I have no regrets about unlocking my bootloader.

still on latest stock rom. since there will be an update to 4.1.1 i will not root or unlock (the bootloader) of the device. my girlfriend uses the tablet more intensively than me. rooting the device might cause a drop the WAF.
but i am planning to unlock/root as soon as asus stops developing for 300T.

Will rooting change otherstuff such as OTA updates, recovery or etc? Possible to unroot easily?

i didn't unlock , but rooted.
Locked & rooted. Keeping warranty.
Still Charged Up
I am unlocked and have used clean rom, hydro 4.3, cm9, skank for ics, aokp for ics, aokp for jb, cm10 and am currently running skank for jb. For me personally, my tab has run the fastest & smoothest with the custom roms w/ little, if any lag at all. With the new TWRP doing /boot backups as well as external sd support, it is so easy now to try all the roms and find one you like.
I'm not unlocked. Like some, I'm waiting for the 4.1 update to see what I think of it. I find it runs slower than my phone for some functions like updating apps, so I'm leaning to unlocking for a faster rom.
Mine is unlocked & rooted. And yet, I didn't found a rom that would satisfy me - just the stock one But maybe I will try the Clean ROM.
Yes! Is the best that I do
Unlocked, rooted. Btw, rooting doesn't affect otas.
Oh, and I'm waiting for warranty to be almost up, then get it fixed. I have a dead pixel. Lol in know, finicky but still lol

Not unlocked or rooted. Waiting on JB. The stock ROM may have issues but custom ROMs just introduce others.
I have unlocked my TF300G bootloader using ASUS Unlocker V.7 and also root it with CWM as my recovery. I'm still on TW .40 official ROM but I have tweaked the build.prop a little bit.

upgrading to Razr M - have some questions

hi all - still contemplating on getting this (~$250 on E-bay). coming from a Samsung Droid Charge where there is only one developer (and he totally rocks - made a kick-ass ROM called tweaked).
hows the development here?
any custom kernels?
custom boot animations?
I see there a few ROMs - which one is most active?
One big advantage from the Charge is that it is practically unbrickable. meaning that no matter bad we screw it up, we can always flash it back to stock with Odin (which also resets the flashing counter). is that the case with this phone?
I'm primarily focused on battery life, as I'm sure ICS and JB will be great on this device. When I do get this phone, I will most likely root it right off the bat and slap on a custom ROM.
thanks!

The rom support on this phone is not huge at the moment but it is a quite new device im sure it will grow over time. When you root this device currently there is no way of resetting it that i know of to show that it has never been rooted unfortunately.
well, I just ordered the Razr M today from e-bay ($250). They're including a 32GB sdcard as well.
the first thing I would like to do is perform a factory reset/data wipe and then root it. how do I perform a factory reset?
You can factory reset either in settings privacy factory reset or in recovery. The phone will most likely be reset before shipping to you.

Personally, I haven't found a need to put a custom ROM on this device. I'm rooted with a 64GB SD-card and froze all bloatware with Titanium Backup. For my purposes it runs great. I hope you have the same success.

thanks - I'll probably stick with the stock ROM at first, and if the BDH ROM can add more battery life (judging from the thread, it looks like it should), then I'll consider installing that.
also, I was thinking about transferring my sdcard from my Charge to this phone and re-installing the app data (not apps themselves, as I'll just re-download them from the market) - does anyone think that this could be a problem given that the backup data was from a different device (running GB)?
also, I did a quick search, but could not find an immediate answer - how can I tell if the phone I am getting is the Developer Edition or Retail?
thanks!
Where do u live? If your getting the droid razr m it's probably not the developer edition the australian razr is unlocked (equivalent to the dev razr m with a few differences.

[Q] Random Reboots

Good afternoon peeps. I am Mark proud owner of a rooted Sammy S3. I have been around the block a few times with Sammy's. My first experience rooting was with my HTC Desire, then my LG Revolution and then my Sammy 2 and now 3.
I have a Moto Razr M on Verizon for a work phone. I received an update maybe 3 weeks ago, since then my phone with reboot itself 2-3 times a day. Some days it will completely shut down, and I will have to hit the power and volume buttons to reawaken it. Any thoughts or suggestions?
I really really want to root this bad boy. But it is a work phone. How easy is it to root one of these guys? Is there stable enough ROMs? Will any OTA break the root so I would have to re root it again?
Thanks guys and gals!

You could just have a bad app. Goto my goodies & install xperia launcher it has an app drawer that sorts by date installed. Uninstall apps one at a time & reboot after each.
You may need a data reset from security.
See my restore link for steps to a full restore & a link to root for locked users.

Xperia launcher needs to be installed while apps are being accumulated for the "by date" to be of any use.

I don't get the random reboots, but I've heard of others experiencing that with corporate phones (could be one of the security features not playing nicely).
root is easy to obtain, but you cannot unlock the bootloader to slap on a custom ROM if your baseband version is after May 2013.
there was/is an app called safestrap that allows folks to side-load custom ROMs, but you'll be sacrificing space (which already comes at a premium on this device). i think the OTA will unroot, but you can still re-root.
right now, IMO, the main reason to unlock the bootloader is to install a custom newer ROM (4.2.2 and 4.3 are available). an unlocked bootloader means that you can install a custom kernel, which are needed for these newer ROMs
however, if your main reason is to simply debloat, then root would satisfy that as well.
hope this helps.
Yah build date is may 24th. I had like 6 apps and 10 programs with updates I removed or wiped clean. Give it a day and see what happens. Thanks for the suggestions.

Verizon Moto X has been rooted!

Well root is not permanent yet, but it just means we have to wait a while longer for a rooting method/package to be released. Good news all around. Now to unlock that SOB of a bootloader....

Sorry but bootloader unlock doesn't seem likely....as of right now most Moto's don't take too kindly to touching partitions other than data, system, and cache....

Yeah, I'm aware. And Moto includes a mean bootloader on their hardware. Custom ROMers are likely to have to get going on 2nd Init if they want any chance of seeing something custom on this bad boy
BTW @Indirect Thanks for your work on getting root. Much appreciated.
Honestly I'm not so concerned with the bootloader. Root will be nice just to do some minor tweaks. But I (and maybe it's just me) have no interest in flashing custom software. It's already very stock-like, and I wouldn't want to lose the features the X brings with something like CM or AOKP.
A custom recovery would be nice for backup purposes, but we have an FXZ, do we not? I know the Droids do... If we have an FXZ, I'm not too worried about even having a custom recovery. In other words, I'd be perfectly happy with root access without the unlocked BL.
I'm thinking about selling my s4 for a vzw Moto x now that we can root it but I'm not sure that's enough for me if it can't be rom'd. I have cm10.2 on my s4 and love being able to have the newest version of android but more than that I like the customization cm brings, like swiping from the top right shows my quick toggles, and I have the toggles customized just how I like. I'm not sure I'm ready to lose features like that. But I like the size of the x so much better than the s4.
Even without an unlocked bootloader, it will still likely be able to be so custom roms. It'll probably just rely on something like safestrap or bootstrap which have been used on other Moto phones with locked bootloaders. We've got some awesome devs that can do some amazing things.

Do custom roms mean losing the touchless control (using dedicated core) and active display abilities? I didn't think about losing those features in a custom rom, I really love them. Are they possible to port over to a custom rom?

Custom Roms built from a factory image(my favorite) will have all the moto x features unless the Dev intentionally breaks them. I plan to build using this method. I never released my ROM for the S3 since scrosler had such a great debloat ROM out.

Looking forward to rooting my Moto X. Personally, I want to stick to the stock rom. It is nearly perfect. However, I do want to see the bootloader cracked because when 4.3 comes to our phone we are likely to lose root without a way of getting it back without a custom recovery.

Poll: Getting the Note 4 DevEd. or Note 4 Regular?

Which Note 4 are you guys getting?
The Note 4 Developer Edition or the regular Note 4?
The Developer edition is the same as the regular with the exception of open boot loader allowing custom ROMs to be installed and extensive UI customization
Definitely getting the developer edition. Not concerned with custom kernels or roms, but having an unlocked bootloader is a much clearly path to root access. All I want to do, can be done with Xposed modules.

It's only temporary, don't worry it'll be back.
With Android L security, I would only consider a Dev N4 at this point. It is unlocked and will be easy to root. Flash TWRP recovery in Odin, boot into TWRP recovery from a powered off state, then flash Chainfires SuperSU.zip. From there it is game on...adaway, tibu, xposed modules, and I can pretty much create my own TW rom from that point.

The big question is whether any devs will be able to make lollipop roms possible for the note 4 dev.
The apparent lack of Root possibility on the retail VZ Note 4 had me resigned to keeping my N3 (which isn't the worst thing). But IF we can actually buy the Dev Edition of the N4 anytime soon, and IF the Dev Edition is as easy to root as purported, then yes, I will buy the Dev Edition ASAP. I do want to see other peoples experiences with the Dev Edition before I throw down near $700 for it however. I am not overly excited for Lollipop, so a good, unlocked, rooted and user (myself) tweaked stock kitkat ROM will be just fine for me for quite some time. If Lollipop is available, rootable and worth the upgrade, then I will upgrade to it. I always disable/freeze the OTA apk on my phones so I can see what bugs/problems a new factory ROM presents before taking it. My N3 was on the original stock JB ROM until just recently when I upgraded to the latest kitkat, and I can honestly say I preferred the kitkat rom. No going back now though.
Long story short, the Dev edition will likely be my only N4 if I do get the N4.
I was going to get the dev version, but paid $60 total for the retail model verses over $600 more for the dev version.

No, you can't upgrade to the Developer Edition. The price is $662.53 plus tax and shipping if you want other than their 4-5 day shipping/delivery. You have to order through the Samsung web site.
