Clearing phone cache after full discharge-recharge cycle improved my battery life - Xperia Z3 Compact General

HI
I recently bought the Xperia-Z3-Compact second hand and was angry about how bad the battery life was, usually I had to recharge twice a day! I searched around for answers and the mobile data active bug seemed to be the culprit. since there is no fix I found this little trick to boost the battery a bit until we get Android M.
I am on 5.1.1 without root or unlocked bootloader
So basically as the title says, let the battery drain completely and then put it on the charger, don't start the phone. When it is 100% start the phone into android. From there hold down the volume up and the power button, the phone should.vibrate 3 times, keep holding it until you see the Sony logo, let it boot into android.
I went from 4 hours SOT to about 6-7. Alot of variables like always keeping stamina mode, low brightness included.

Yeah Actually I was also facing the same problem when I bought this a week ago, did lollipop upgrade but did not liked so went back to kitkat .77 , then I allowed battery to drain completely till last drop, (till screen stopped getting on with battery icon). Then I did charge to 100% with the shipped charger (was quick within 2hrs 15 min ). after that switched on holding vol+ button but phone did not vibrate (but kept holding it for 1 min, I guessed trick did not work, so started it normally ), but after boot I found setting to be reset so I guess the cache got cleared . From then I have moderately used phone (only 26% discharged in 8hrs that too without stamina mode ). So I guess it will give a good SoT and will last for 2 days (without stamina mode) and even more with stamina .
Anyways thanks anarox for the trick :good:
My firmware: 23.0.1.A.5.77 (India) Model D5833

Does the volume + with power button clear the cache? I thought it was only to hard reboot the phone.
When I hold them while in Android system, my phone just powers off and nothing happens when I keep holding it.

You have to press and hold those buttons while the phone is turning on.

I AM holding them while the phone is powered on.
It only powers off the system. And after that nothing happens even when I keep holding them.

Maybe there is a translation barrier between us.
You have to press the POWER and Vol + button during immediately after starting the boot sequence of the phone. In other words, turn the phone off, then back on again, and while it is still booting and loading, then you press the buttons.

Now I understand. Thank you.
Still it doesn't do anything to my phone.

Phew.... and I thought I was the only one on the planet having this issue
Z3 compact (D5833) owner here, based in UAE
.
My Z3c (D5833) on LPop was bothering me quite a bit ... The whole reason I bought this phone was because of it's highly praised battery life. On 5.1, my battery life was 'average'. At times the device would heat up and I noticed the battery life was weak. (I know this because I had used the phone on KitKat before, and the battery performance was awesome).
So around 10 days ago I flashed the same firmware you did (Kitkat, India).
Immediately noticed dramatic increase in battery life (without Stamina Mode activated). But then something funny begin to happen. When I activated Stamina Mode, I noticed the battery would drain faster
I know it sounds strange but trust me ... it was really frustrating. So I used it without stamina mode. Then I came across this thread and did exactly as you guys have been discussing - full battery drain, full recharge, cleared cache. It did make a difference. But again when I activated Stamina Mode, boom.... the battery was draining faster Really frustrated, I just continued using the device with SMode switched off. At least KKat was providing better battery life than LPop, and no heating issues too.
Everything was okay, until I noticed a small bug. When in any app, the screen would freeze. So I had to press the home button or the recent apps button to sort of refresh the screen. Then it would work normally. This happened several times to the point it made it difficult to even type a message on WhatsApp without the screen freezing and me having to 'refresh' the screen. :silly:
Did you face this same issue?
Also, advertisements begin to pop up here and there. I mean, c'mon... either my phone was infected with adware (I did a full scan using the AVG app - no detection), or the firmware was buggy.
I was waiting patiently for the Marshmallow rollout, but it’s not arrived in UAE till date. So the impatient geek that I am, I flashed a linked Australian Generic FTF (6.0.1) from Xperiablog.net
It's been less than 24 hours since I've flashed. So far, awesome performance, buttery smooth, blazing fast, and very fluid experience.
Batter life so far is just amazing. 3 hours of SOT, WiFi on for almost 5 hours, then 3G on for almost 3 hours, and I've experienced only a 50% drop.

I have just changed my battery and faced the issue that the batteryindicator shows the wrong %. I can be on 1 % for hours... So I have just done the trick as described in post #1 and what I cannot read clearly in that post, but I think is very important is, that the charger should NOT be removed. In my case I have let the phone drain until it turned it self off. Then charged to 100% with the phone turned off. WITH the charger still connected I turned the phone on and quickly held down both power and volume up. The phone vibrated 3 times and then showed the charging symbol as when it is turned off, but now is only showed 66 %... Hope my problem will be solved when it gets to 100%...
Edit: When it got to 100% it held down the power, and the the power and volume up again - then it showed 86%, So I did it again - to 100% and power then power and volume up and it showed 93% and finally when it showed 100% and I did it again it showed 100% - so now I hope it is for real this time...

3% battery drain

I just checked my note drains battery @3% per 5 hour. is it normal.?
i just locked my device n when i checked it was 3% down.. n in cpyspy it says phone was in deep sleep mode all the time.
3% in 5 hours? thats normal drain, what you expecting to have ?
dont know i read somewhere in note forum someone was getting 1% for 8hours. thats why i was asking.
BTW i am on rocket rom v22.
So you thinking your note should last 2 weeks without charging?
3% per 5 hour is super
1% per 8hours sounds unbelievable to me, unless you keep your phone off
Its normal bro. Don't worry, it would not drain your battery that really much in a day. I'm surfing the webs a lot in a day and my batt still not giving up to be drained out to zero

It sounded unbelievable to me too...until last night that is. It was at 100% just before I went to bed and dropped 1% in over 8 hours. Thats 34 days on standby!!

If you want to know it exactly, what's going on with your battery: Go to Market and install "Battery Monitor Widget" from 3C. This is a widget which shows every 60 seconds the actual drain. But more importently is the logging-function, called "history". I set mine to update every 60 seconds to get a good idea which thing consums what...
F.e. I got my Note yesterday and put it in flight mode over night. This morning I looked at the history and got a stable 7mA drain - not bad for a 1,4GHz DualCore...
For changing the update-rate of history:
-tab widget
-left sensor --> settings
-history
-update rate history --> 60 seconds
(I don't know the exact names cause I have the german version)
Sounds about right. Mine dropped 3% in 6 hours or so.

I consistently get 1% down throught the night which is like 7 hours. During this time, Cellular data is off, wifi is off, AGPS is off. And after Note has been up for few days, sometimes it will get down by 10% through night due to rouse battery hungry app stuck in memory. Memory clear helps and it is back to regular next night and sometimes I have to reboot. The longest I can go without reboot is like 10 days by then something real battery hungry app is stuck somewhere.
Now I am using app called Tasker which is set to speak battery percentage for every change in unit, I get 3% down through night.
how do you guys avoid touching your Note for so long? i can't put mine down
Being asleep I guess ;-)
ok, if you have your radio turned off, and wifi turned off, and screen turned off, your note can last a couple/few days on standy
I misread, i thought the OP was actually USING his phone and the % only dropped like 1% in 8 hours or 3% in 5 hours which of course would be SUPER
but for me even when im sleep i leave wifi on
i could save more juice by not having the wifi on yeah sure
I have my phone drop into 'phone only' mode at 20% battery. From that point, the amount of battery use is negligible. I believe all the hype about 'standby time' now. I think it could last a week at least like that from a full charge.
The fact is it is good at conserving battery until you use the other features. Then it drains like crazy in comparison.
So to get great battery life:
Turn off WiFi
Turn off mobile data
Turn off auto-sync
Turn screen to 1% (I find 0% turns the screen off!)
Turn off GPS
Turn off bluetooth
Kill all unused apps & services
Turn the screen off.
Or, you could buy a 'dumb' phone, of course! That is effectively what you are doing by this.
Unlike Symbian where app is authorized to initiate said connection (wifi/cellular), it was possible to keep apps like email/fbook poll every 10/15 minutes. In Android, the design is such that apps don't initiate connection.
So during weekend days when email is not utmost important, I use Tasker to turn wifi/cellular/sync on every 15 minutes for short interval of time. This saves a lot of battery drain. But obviously suitable when you do not need to be on the edge of info highway.
Morning!
Second start of the day: 4mA drain in flightmode, 56mA on standby with WiFi on.
And after a full day of playing arround (no games) and getting used to the Note yesterday the battery was still at 50%...
Ah yeah, some more values:
Bluetooth on, doing nothing: 51mA (so it adds nothing more to the standard standby drain)
Bluetooth + Headset, doing nothing: 102mA

I'm certain the Note could do a week on standby.
Doing the things you mention above, I once managed to get my Dell Streak to last for 5 days after I left my charger at my girlfriend's house. The battery was already down to 50% when I left her house, so it lasted 5 days on half a battery!
I think the battery life on my Note is about 25% better than my Streak, so it could easily do a week...
You know, if you wanted it to I can't think of any reason you would want it to, other than being without a charger like I was.

Battery dies when showing full on 4.3

Hey guys, I'm on 4.3 and I'm rooted with stock recovery. My phone has been getting really weird battery, being that it will show 90% or higher, and then I will pick up my phone and use it for a minute, at which point it will die completely. I then turn my phone back on, and it shows a completely dead battery (I actually have to plug it in before I can turn it on it's so dead). It will NEVER die on its own, only after I pick it up and use it for a minute.
I've read about this problem online, primarily with 4.2 updates. I haven't seen much about this with 4.3. Actually, most people were talking about it being fixed by 4.2.2 so I'm not sure what to do. Other people were talking about RMA'ing their phone, but I have had a third party replace my screen in the past so I'm not sure they will accept an RMA from me at this point.
This happens every day at least once.
Would appreciate any help.
Did the problem occur after you updated to 4.3? If yes, how did you update? (OTA or flashing Google Stock Image)
Try doing a full cycle of the battery (let it die, recharge till 100%), if not working backup your data and reset to factory with Google's images.

OTA, and then I rooted with Wug's Nexus Toolkit
EDIT: I had no issues before the 4.3 update though I will say it seems like this didn't happen for about a week or two after the update. It didn't start happening immediately.

Well it's constantly dying and I definitely recharge it to what it says is 100%. But it seems to get there very fast. Reset to factory with which image? I'm not sure the steps I'd need to take to do that.
Thanks for replying guys.
Update: My phone has been off the charger for about two hours now, yet one app says it's been on battery for three hours, my phone says a different time, the battery settings say I have 91 percent left but the icon in my task bar is totally full and not changing at all.
Well okay, so you didn't do a factory reset after the update, did you? 4.3 was a relatively big update with a lot of changes internally, so a factory reset really is recommended. So I also would do as AlbertoWayfarer said.
So firstly, you have this possibility: Do a factory reset and after this, see if this problem persists. See here:
https://support.google.com/nexus/4/answer/2936226?hl=en-GB
Or secondly, if this doesn't work or if you're under the impression, that something went totally wrong with your update to 4.3, flash the original 4.3 recovery image from Google. You said you used Wug's Toolkit, I saw that it has an option which says "Flash Stock + Unroot". I guess with this tool it's quite easy to flash the image. After you've done that, you have to root your device (if you wanna be rooted again).
Be aware that both of those methods will wipe all of your data, so make a backup of all your data you need again first!
If you are rooted you can backup with TitaniumBackup (backup all system and user apps), then if you want a really clean phone you can copy everything from your sdcard (internal storage) to your pc. Download Google's factory image for mako (4.3 version) and restore to factory with fastboot.
If you copied everything from your sdcard, you can use the flash-all file in the .tar, if not you should flash everything manually.

I had a similar issue.( however mine was kernel related) Full charge, I picked it up for 10 minutes, and clicked the screen off, it wouldn't turn back on so I did a hard reset, and the battery had lost 70%, in a matter of minutes
Sent from my Nexus 4 TMO @1.728 GHz on Stock 4.3.0
I did a factory reset on my phone, but had to wait a little bit because I also had to add some adhesive to my screen because it was going up (I had a screen replacement a few months ago and I believe the climate change due to my move from Ohio to California affected it). This morning I woke up and my phone said almost full battery, then the screen went black and it was dead. Plugged it in and turned it on and it was at 1% charge.
So I will try to flash stock and see what happens.
Flashed back to stock 4.3 and unrooted using the toolkit. Phone showed 98% battery. Played a YouTube video at full brightness off an on for three or four hours, it only dropped four percent. Eventually, it got down to about 80 percent, then my phone froze and died. Plugged it back in, powered it back on, and the battery is showing zero percent.
I don't know what to do at this point. Please help. Should I go back to 4.2? This didn't start happening until 4.3. Will Google replace my phone if I've used a third party to replace my screen? (the back of the device had a crack in it when the touch screen went out and Google refused to take it due to the crack .. on the back ... that was there when I got my phone)
Would love some help on this, if any. Flashed back to stock 4.3, as stated before, and the issue persists. My phone was showing 74% battery and it randomly died when I went to unlock it. It would not power back on until I plugged it in (It did the Google logo, then Nexus logo, then died). When I plugged it in and turned it on, it said 27%. So I don't know what to do at this point. Flash 4.2? Flash a ROM? Change the kernel? I don't know how to do the kernel stuff and I would need some guidance on flashing the rom.
Google wouldn't take my phone for RMA since the screen has been replaced, right? Please advise.
EDIT: It is worth noting that I did get an OTA update from Google today that said it was upgrading me to 4.3 Jelly Bean and mentioned the Keep note-taking app, despite that I checked before updating and I was already on 4.3. But I installed it anyway and this happened (though it did it still before, just not such drastic and off percentages)

Are you getting "red light" at all?
When is the phone supposed to make a red light? I don't believe I have ever seen it. I have read some battery issues with the Nexus 4 where people talk about their phone being totally unresponsive and unavailable to turn on -- that has never occurred with me. Plugging it into the wall always brings it back on. It's like actual battery dying. It's just dying way before it says it's going to and it's making it difficult to gauge how long I'm actually getting.
I did just say screw it, flashed TWRP, put a Rom on and a new kernel just to see what happens. This was like 20 minutes ago. It did seem to charge up really fast after I did that, which might mean the battery is still reporting wrong, though :/
And now I'm pretty certain that the new rom and kernel didn't do anything. Because it charged up super fast and now despite having bluetooth, GPS, and a YouTube video running at full brightness for 45 minutes, it's only dropped 2%, meaning it's definitely reading it wrong. This is so frustrating.
EDIT: Had it go for another ten minutes, picked up my phone and hit the menu button to stop the video, and it died. Now I turned it back on while plugged in and it says 3% - Full for the battery...
EDIT 2: It just went from 3% to 36%. Like there was no middle ground, I actually watched it change from 3% to 36%. And just watched it go from 36% to 40%.
Thank you so much to everyone who has posted thus far and here's to hoping ya'll can help me some more.
How old is your phone? These seem to me to be telltale signs of a bad battery. From what I know about the N4, the battery can be purchased and replaced manually.

Mine was jumping like yours except 100 to 30 range and shut off. What I did was opened the phone unscrewed the battery and connected it back. I left the screws out. Took about three days of doing this until I
Found the sweet spot the connector liked. I would plug it in(battery) and push on the ribbon cable towards the connector in the gap between the battery and the housing. I'm going on two weeks now without the spikes. I also (placebo) deleted battery stats a couple of times for s's and giggles. Seeing as how I was never hitting 100% only 99%
I got this phone for next to nothing and had a hell of a time getting it functional. Mic not working red light and battery spikes.
After all the workarounds I'm loving it. Well minus the downgrade of LTE.... I'm on att, but I can live with that.

Very simple. Google "nexus 4 teardown". I used a light gauge guitar pick instead of the pry tool. I noticed if you do the power button corner last its a lot easier getting the back off.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I went ahead and bought a new battery since they were cheap. Can anyone advise as to what the best practices are with this new battery out of the box?
I mean, do I put it in, charge it all the way, then turn it on? Do I put it in, let it discharge, turn it off ... or anything wiping battery stats? As detailed as you can, please. Thanks.
Same thing happened to me 10 minutes ago.

This is my fifth day with my S7 runs like a charm except some problems regarding incoming call

I have the S7, 64GB and I also feel the battery drains quite fast. Around 3 Hours screen on time.
Currently trying with disabling the 2nd SIM & also turned the performance setting to low power and but has not made much difference yet.
Also I suspect the "Clear background App" setting/system app is unnecessarily killing apps in the background and causing even more app-restarts. Any way to turn this app off and instead use Greenify ?

I use my s7 five days and it was fine, tonight phablet did not respond to pressing the power button, left display off, I pressed multifunction button to wake up the device, but nothing happened. I attached charger but after an hour of charging phone is always off. I took away the SIM card and SD memory card and charging unit remained, and after another half-hour phone is always turned off and does not start anymore.
for five hours phone is dead but feels heat in the area of the rear camera ... I think the problem started from the battery, because the same area was heated slightly during charging.
I have got the same problem, the battery is running down too fast. I only have used since last 3 days and I have to charge the battery twice every day. Any solution?
Hi,
No troubles here, battery is fine on my 3G/16G.
Do you have the problem when the phone is as new and wiped out clean from the recovery ?
Can you try this withouth installing anything ?
Best regards
For me, at the end of the day, about 40% of battery left.
I turn the battery pref into low performance, and no problem for my use
I am a light user and I get only 8 to 10 hours with the S7.
I recharged from 12% to 44% in less than 20 minutes, but it seems to empty just as fast.
I have heard that you should let it run down, till it shuts down and then recharge it and that helps the battery life
i have exactly the same problem .. no answer from elephone

I had same problem with S7 Mini, turned out it was 'Play Services'
Check this link for details. https://forum.xda-developers.com/elephone-s7/help/elephone-s7-mini-terrible-battery-drain-t3560035
Try this.. Go to settings, clear background application,, check all the apps as whitelist. It turns out the phone usually clear background applications, its logic to save battery is by shutting off every app which is running in background, but by doing this, the processor will work harder to bring up every apps back to work which means more energy more energy consumptions.
And turn of your finger print scanner. I did these and got my discharge rate 1%/h in standby.

Moto G4 issues after latest patch of Nougat

Hi,
I updated my Moto G4 to Nougat last week. Everything was fine. Yesterday there was some 114 mb ota update. I downloaded it and since then I am facing two issues-
1. Whenever I lock the screen using the power/lock button on the side, the screens becomes black and white for a millisecond and then it gets locked. I haven't seen any other phone's screen becoming black and white for a tad and then lock. Is everyone experiencing the same?
2. The battery is draining just way too fast. 40% depletion since morning. I only used the phone to make two 4 minutes phonecalls. I did not install any new app or game. Any troubleshooting for this?
This is the build number etc.-

Though it's unrelated to this update, when I first got this phone last year I had the same problem with the battery. What fixed it was manually recalibrating the battery. If i remember the steps correctly it was something like: Let phone fully discharge, plug it in and charge it with the power off for about 8 hours, power it on and keep it on the charger for at least another hour.
I updated my phone to Nougat yesterday and manually updated to the same update you're on. I haven't noticed that black and white issue with the lock screen and, if anything, the battery life seems better than on marshmallow. Hopefully battery recalibration helps out. A factory reset may not be a bad idea as well, especially if it wouldn't be a big inconvenience.

The phone charges fully in under 2 hours, thanks to turbo charging. Don't you think 8 hours are way too much? The black and white issue is being faced by other users too-

No. The whole point is that the battery percentage is inaccurate. Here's a guide for you:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/general/guide-how-to-callibrate-battery-device-t3308554
When I followed this process I let it charge overnight before turning it back on. I also didn't use the turbo charging charger that came with it, but instead a 5 port Anker usb charger. Perhaps I wasted time, but it worked.

Thanks. Will try the same.
That second photo of S6 looks scarier for a phone with non-removable batteries. Is that the case with most of the phones with non-removable batteries?

Moto g4 plus battery drain and fast charge!

I bought this phone last year in july and everything was going pretty smoothly until the nougat update. It completely broke my phone.
MY PHONE GETS FULLY CHARGED IN 30-45 MINS(OBVIOUSLY A BUG).
BATTERY DRAIN IS TERRIBLE, FROM 100% TO 15-20 % IN MAXIMUM 1 HOUR.
PHONE GETS SHUT DOWN ALL OF A SUDDEN AND SHOWS WRONG BATTERY PERCENTAGE.
Now let me tell you all what I have tried to fix this and STILL TRYING. -_-
In January 2017 tried methods like factory reset, clear cache partition etc, nothing works.
Now this month I thought of going back to MM to fix the problem l, that too didn't work.( I downgraded using fastboot)
Again updated to nougat and rooted my phone for the first time, and tried some popular custom recovery. Result = No change what so ever.
Tried Elementalx kernel = No results.
Currently using the Lineage OS 14.1 latest version ( heard it's the most stable CM) = no change even after using some battery optimising apps like greenify.
Attaching battery info screenshot for reference.
If anyone found out any fix to this problem then please tell me. I feel like throwing this piece of **** in the garbage.
PS - while writing the question my battery drained almost 10%
Definitely battery or board problem. Go to service center.

There's always a chance if it's a hardware failure of the battery. It depends on the service center. You should give it a try.

Did you get the battery drain issue resolved? My g4 plus is having a same issue after bought it a year but rarely use it....now after lightly used for about 15 mins, battery is down 10%. Any help is appreciated.

What firmware do you have on your device? Do you have any apps besides the standard stock apps (e.g. Google apps) on your device? How strong is your signal?
You may wish to download Better Battery Stats (free version here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809 ) or GSAM Battery Monitor to check if there's any apps or processes draining your battery.
Alternatively, as others have suggested, if there's no obvious draining apps, it could be a firmware issue (try a clean, complete firmware flash) or a battery issue.

1. What firmware do you have on your device? I have the original unrooted stock rom running Android 7.0 and just checked no update needed.
2. Do you have any apps besides the standard stock apps (e.g. Google apps) on your device? The G4 plus is showing i have 133 app installed and currently running Nova Launcher.
3. How strong is your signal? I am setting it at Airplane mode while turning wifi on just to listen to music and surf the web.
I will download the Better Battery Stats and GSAM Battery Monitor to monitor the battery performance.
Thanks for your reply.
A possible cause is that the connector between battery and motherboard is loose (so that the accu cannot give full power to the motherboard). To fix this, you need to open your phone with a t4 torx screwdriver and tweezers (look for the instruction videos on this on youtube). Disconnect and reconnect the battery cable connector to the motherboard and make sure it is well fixed.
In my case this worked like a charm, I also noticed that next to the battery having normal behavior again, the phone was also much faster. Apparently the processor speed was also tuned down as the battery could not give full power before applying this fix. Saved me 25 / 70 / 230 euros (new battery / new battery with service costs / new phone)

Thanks a lot Rinthros for your solution. My Moto G4 Plus caused same issue after having overnight charging for two consecutive nights. 2nd day morning I realized that my phone discharged with normal use in only 1 hour. And after get fully charged in only 30 minutes. It felt very sad but then found this solution by Rinthros. I did exactly the same. Opened my phone with t4 for screwdriver and disconnected battery connectors and just reconnected it. It worked for me exactly smooth and amazing. Now after doing so from last 3 days my phone working as it was previously.
Thanks a lot for your solution Rinthros.
:fingers-crossed::good:
I too had the same problem but actually this occurs after updating it to Oreo my battery is not fully charging and after unplugging battery percent remains same got stuck after 1hr of usage device gets shutdown due to low battery all these problem are only in stock Oreo so I downgraded to marshmallow everything works fine after a battery calibration I dont know what was the problem on Oreo guys pls help me to fix it
Thanks a lot Rinthros. My battery was original from 2016 and tired. I decided to buy a new and followed an instruction on the net. After a day or two I noticed rapid drain and quick charge . In the end I had 30 min of use before I needed to charge again. I opened the unit and, for sure, the connection between battery and motherboard was loose. Fixed this and this was very successful. Two hours later, after re-charge, my Moto 4 is still on 94%. My theory is that a floor-drop caused the disconnect. I visited another forum in search for a solution, but nothing helped. I think this solution applies to other versions of Moto. Please Lenovo, listen to Rinthros, this can save you a lot of customers. Moto is a greate phone and deserves better support.
