Battery dies when showing full on 4.3 - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, I'm on 4.3 and I'm rooted with stock recovery. My phone has been getting really weird battery, being that it will show 90% or higher, and then I will pick up my phone and use it for a minute, at which point it will die completely. I then turn my phone back on, and it shows a completely dead battery (I actually have to plug it in before I can turn it on it's so dead). It will NEVER die on its own, only after I pick it up and use it for a minute.
I've read about this problem online, primarily with 4.2 updates. I haven't seen much about this with 4.3. Actually, most people were talking about it being fixed by 4.2.2 so I'm not sure what to do. Other people were talking about RMA'ing their phone, but I have had a third party replace my screen in the past so I'm not sure they will accept an RMA from me at this point.
This happens every day at least once.
Would appreciate any help.

Did the problem occur after you updated to 4.3? If yes, how did you update? (OTA or flashing Google Stock Image)

Try doing a full cycle of the battery (let it die, recharge till 100%), if not working backup your data and reset to factory with Google's images.

OTA, and then I rooted with Wug's Nexus Toolkit
EDIT: I had no issues before the 4.3 update though I will say it seems like this didn't happen for about a week or two after the update. It didn't start happening immediately.

Well it's constantly dying and I definitely recharge it to what it says is 100%. But it seems to get there very fast. Reset to factory with which image? I'm not sure the steps I'd need to take to do that.
Thanks for replying guys.

Update: My phone has been off the charger for about two hours now, yet one app says it's been on battery for three hours, my phone says a different time, the battery settings say I have 91 percent left but the icon in my task bar is totally full and not changing at all.

Well okay, so you didn't do a factory reset after the update, did you? 4.3 was a relatively big update with a lot of changes internally, so a factory reset really is recommended. So I also would do as AlbertoWayfarer said.
So firstly, you have this possibility: Do a factory reset and after this, see if this problem persists. See here:
https://support.google.com/nexus/4/answer/2936226?hl=en-GB
Or secondly, if this doesn't work or if you're under the impression, that something went totally wrong with your update to 4.3, flash the original 4.3 recovery image from Google. You said you used Wug's Toolkit, I saw that it has an option which says "Flash Stock + Unroot". I guess with this tool it's quite easy to flash the image. After you've done that, you have to root your device (if you wanna be rooted again).
Be aware that both of those methods will wipe all of your data, so make a backup of all your data you need again first!

If you are rooted you can backup with TitaniumBackup (backup all system and user apps), then if you want a really clean phone you can copy everything from your sdcard (internal storage) to your pc. Download Google's factory image for mako (4.3 version) and restore to factory with fastboot.
If you copied everything from your sdcard, you can use the flash-all file in the .tar, if not you should flash everything manually.

I had a similar issue.( however mine was kernel related) Full charge, I picked it up for 10 minutes, and clicked the screen off, it wouldn't turn back on so I did a hard reset, and the battery had lost 70%, in a matter of minutes
Sent from my Nexus 4 TMO @1.728 GHz on Stock 4.3.0

I did a factory reset on my phone, but had to wait a little bit because I also had to add some adhesive to my screen because it was going up (I had a screen replacement a few months ago and I believe the climate change due to my move from Ohio to California affected it). This morning I woke up and my phone said almost full battery, then the screen went black and it was dead. Plugged it in and turned it on and it was at 1% charge.
So I will try to flash stock and see what happens.

Flashed back to stock 4.3 and unrooted using the toolkit. Phone showed 98% battery. Played a YouTube video at full brightness off an on for three or four hours, it only dropped four percent. Eventually, it got down to about 80 percent, then my phone froze and died. Plugged it back in, powered it back on, and the battery is showing zero percent.
I don't know what to do at this point. Please help. Should I go back to 4.2? This didn't start happening until 4.3. Will Google replace my phone if I've used a third party to replace my screen? (the back of the device had a crack in it when the touch screen went out and Google refused to take it due to the crack .. on the back ... that was there when I got my phone)

Would love some help on this, if any. Flashed back to stock 4.3, as stated before, and the issue persists. My phone was showing 74% battery and it randomly died when I went to unlock it. It would not power back on until I plugged it in (It did the Google logo, then Nexus logo, then died). When I plugged it in and turned it on, it said 27%. So I don't know what to do at this point. Flash 4.2? Flash a ROM? Change the kernel? I don't know how to do the kernel stuff and I would need some guidance on flashing the rom.
Google wouldn't take my phone for RMA since the screen has been replaced, right? Please advise.
EDIT: It is worth noting that I did get an OTA update from Google today that said it was upgrading me to 4.3 Jelly Bean and mentioned the Keep note-taking app, despite that I checked before updating and I was already on 4.3. But I installed it anyway and this happened (though it did it still before, just not such drastic and off percentages)

Are you getting "red light" at all?

When is the phone supposed to make a red light? I don't believe I have ever seen it. I have read some battery issues with the Nexus 4 where people talk about their phone being totally unresponsive and unavailable to turn on -- that has never occurred with me. Plugging it into the wall always brings it back on. It's like actual battery dying. It's just dying way before it says it's going to and it's making it difficult to gauge how long I'm actually getting.
I did just say screw it, flashed TWRP, put a Rom on and a new kernel just to see what happens. This was like 20 minutes ago. It did seem to charge up really fast after I did that, which might mean the battery is still reporting wrong, though :/

And now I'm pretty certain that the new rom and kernel didn't do anything. Because it charged up super fast and now despite having bluetooth, GPS, and a YouTube video running at full brightness for 45 minutes, it's only dropped 2%, meaning it's definitely reading it wrong. This is so frustrating.
EDIT: Had it go for another ten minutes, picked up my phone and hit the menu button to stop the video, and it died. Now I turned it back on while plugged in and it says 3% - Full for the battery...
EDIT 2: It just went from 3% to 36%. Like there was no middle ground, I actually watched it change from 3% to 36%. And just watched it go from 36% to 40%.
Thank you so much to everyone who has posted thus far and here's to hoping ya'll can help me some more.

How old is your phone? These seem to me to be telltale signs of a bad battery. From what I know about the N4, the battery can be purchased and replaced manually.

Mine was jumping like yours except 100 to 30 range and shut off. What I did was opened the phone unscrewed the battery and connected it back. I left the screws out. Took about three days of doing this until I
Found the sweet spot the connector liked. I would plug it in(battery) and push on the ribbon cable towards the connector in the gap between the battery and the housing. I'm going on two weeks now without the spikes. I also (placebo) deleted battery stats a couple of times for s's and giggles. Seeing as how I was never hitting 100% only 99%
I got this phone for next to nothing and had a hell of a time getting it functional. Mic not working red light and battery spikes.
After all the workarounds I'm loving it. Well minus the downgrade of LTE.... I'm on att, but I can live with that.

Very simple. Google "nexus 4 teardown". I used a light gauge guitar pick instead of the pry tool. I noticed if you do the power button corner last its a lot easier getting the back off.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I went ahead and bought a new battery since they were cheap. Can anyone advise as to what the best practices are with this new battery out of the box?
I mean, do I put it in, charge it all the way, then turn it on? Do I put it in, let it discharge, turn it off ... or anything wiping battery stats? As detailed as you can, please. Thanks.

Same thing happened to me 10 minutes ago.

Battery troubleshooting (ROM inspecific)

This thread is to discus extremely poor battery life on the Nexus S. When we say extremely poor, we mean averaging <24 hours per charge at idle.
After much research I think it's safe to say that some of us are experiencing extremely poor or contrarily, extremely good battery life and no one seems to have an explanation. I'm hoping this thread will find the answer.
The issue:
Many NS users are experiencing extremely poor battery life regardless of:
Rom installed
Apps installed
Installation method
Battery used
Charging method/battery training
Phone usage
Power configuration/tweaks
When we say "extremely poor" we mean <24 hours at idle, but many users are getting less than 8h/C at idle.
I personally have tested this against several ROMS both GB and ICS. We all see slightly better battery performance with GB ROMS, but never greater than 24h/charge.
My ROM history:
Tested the following ROMS for 4 days each, following the same installation procedure each time.
CM7 (nightly/stable) - ~15h/[email protected]
CM9 - ~13h/[email protected]
CyberGR .v4.5 - ~11h/[email protected]
CyberGR .v5.0 - ~11h/[email protected]
Installation method:
Wipe battery stats
Wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache partition
Flash Dalvik-wiper.zip and wipe Dalvik Cache
Wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache partition again
Format /system/data/cache/boot/sdcard
Flash ROM
Flash Gapps if applicable (CyberGR comes with Gapps installed)
I was running an AUCKF1 Radio for all tests. I did try a few other radio's but did not see any noticeable increase in battery life *edit-flashed XXXKB3 and may have increased my idle time by 6x? still testing*
I've also never personally seen an NS get >24h/C, and I've deployed >40 of them to customers. I've only ever heard of >24h/C here on the forums where it seems quite common.
I've seen reports of users flashing the OTA automatically or manually, and some experience <8h/[email protected] while others see >3d/[email protected] I've also tested the OTA and never saw better than 13h/[email protected]
So, we're trying to find the common denominator between those with good battery performance vs. those with poor performance.
Suspects:
Android OS is almost always reported to be active/awake for at least 50% of the time, even at idle on a brand new clean install. It is always the highest consumer of battery, always keeps the CPU awake.
I propose the following test:
Regardless of your setup, if you are experiencing >2d/[email protected] or with use, please post the following:
Phone model (ie: i9020a, i9020t...)
ROM
Radio version
Installation method
Screenshot of your battery monitor from a full charge over a minimum of 10 hours.
Screenshot of your battery use by application/service (we notice that Android OS seems to be the culprit in most cases of poor performance)
For those getting <1d/[email protected], please do the following and then post the same as above:
Note: This should be done overnight.
Follow the above flash instructions and flash whatever ROM you please.
Reboot to recovery and wipe your battery stats.
Power off your handset and give it a full charge while powered off.
On first reboot, sign into a single Google account but do not restore your apps/backups and disable Google sync.
Do not install any additional applications.
Enable wifi/bt/gps/data/sync and associate to a wireless network
Do not modify any power settings.
Leave your handset to idle overnight for at least 8 hours without touching anything.
In the morning, take a screenshot of your battery use as well as battery use by application/service.
Post Phone model, ROM, Radio version, Carrier, and Screenshots.
I recognize that there is some argument about how fast your battery will re-train itself after wiping battery stats. In my experience the training seems to be optimal after 1 full charge to full discharge cycle, but ultimately I've never seen further training result in >24h/C. Someone please let me know if there's a more accurate way to test this? Maybe we shouldn't be wiping battery stats at all?
I'll get us started.
Sorry, didn't get screenshots after 8 hours because my battery wouldn't last that long.

Results fluctuate between ~8h/[email protected] and ~14h/[email protected]
With light to moderate use, I get 6-10h/C
Hey Ben i just did what you did in the other thread. full charge everything on kill all unneeded services.
I'll admit that i forgot to kill extra services and it plummeted my battery to 92% in about 45min. I had an "oh ****" moment and went and killed the random apps.
Im at 2 hours extra now and lost 3% only, everything still on.
So with that info i'll mention this for me would be considered heavy usage. I'll never have everything on constantly. When I was posting up my results of light usage and getting 3 days - note that i had everything firewalled while on 3G except for my emails and messaging and took a few calls only. everything else was off.
I'm gonna guess that with it all on and actually using the phone i'll hit at most 10 hours, probably not even that.
So that basically puts us about even. I'm curious if you do my light tests...will you be seeing 3 days also ? If yes then we can rule out models basically.
Flashed XXXKB3, factory reset (according to OP instructions), flashed CyberGR .v5 again, signed into one Google account, disabled Google sync+backup, enabled and connected to wifi, bt/gps/everything on, then left my phone overnight. Results.
Looks ****in' Gooood. 1.2%/[email protected] draw.
But then, opened my screen once, played some tunes through BT to my truck, drove around for 13 minutes, went back in the house and left the phone idling again and look at the drop! It's continued to draw like this all day now, just idling. I've done NOTHING but play 13 minutes of music and then back to idle.
What's DOES IT MEAN??!!
So I rebooted my phone and let it idle again without touching anything, and still seeing the wicked battery draw. I dunno wtf to think here, and I can't get the draw back down to 1%/[email protected]
*edit* For the sake of 100% transparency, while the phone was idling at 1%/h overnight, I was far enough away from the wifi AP i'd associtated to, that it MAY have lost signal and given up, so perhaps the wifi hardware finally went to sleep. Does anyone know if wpa_supplicant (or whatever controls wifi in Android) runs is represented by AndroidOS?
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Oh. Dur...
I think that may be it. Wifi was probably dis-associated overnight. You can see at the very beginning of the battery recording, there's a sharp dip in charge for about 15 minutes, which corresponds directly to Wifi association, then the draw goes nearly flat (1%/h) for 10.5 hours and the Wifi is not associated.
Testing now... Leaving Wifi on, but dis-associated. See if that nice flat line comes back.

This is a normal night of going out, connecting with friends, a bit of music before. A weekend for when it is most important, these are the results. I forgot to photo the android os but it said it was awake, cpu for 4 hrs.
Regarding the Android OS being highest battery consumer, it might be false alarm:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1456265
Although still, that hasn't explained the high drain (<10h/day) you're experiencing.
In your first set of screencaps (the 2h30m one) it seems obvious that the culprit is Mediaserver and Google+? One of the most annoying things about ICS that I found is that after flashing ROMs or kernels, Google-Photos have a tendency to enable sync behind our backs. Someone in my local forum discovered when he logged in G+ in his PC that the pictures in his Nexus S had suddenly shown up in the G+ account even though he never uploaded them there. After he disabled that sync, his battery life improved. As a result, I've grown OCD about checking my sync settings every once in a while. The Google-Photos option doesn't always show right away when we set up a new Google account.

I'm back to 1%/[email protected] with everything but wifi enabled.
All sync settings enabled with no sync delay.
G+/data/gallery sync all enabled for 3 accounts. Receiving about 30 emails in 14.5 hours overnight. This should work out to 111h/[email protected]
The question here for me is that I thought Wifi would use less power than 3G given it's such lower range. I thought that when Wifi was associated that your 3G would automatically disconnect, thus using less power when associated to a Wifi AP than when connected to 3G.
Am I mistaken in this? Is this not the desired operation?
*edit* It may be looking like my draw increased by about 8x as soon as I opened the screen for the first time this morning, and hasn't dropped back down to the 1%/h. Right now it seems to be at about 10%/h again, though I'll report back on this later today.

power drain increases for dunno whatever reason...
right after a reboot it goes ok if I do not touch it... as soon (or five minutes later) as I start playing with it the power drain increases a lot and android OS takes over any other service...
generally to test I wipe the battery stats before booting from recovery...
maybe we should check in logcat what trigger the high android OS usage?

I've checked logcat/dmesg and haven't seen anything super suspect (to my somewhat untrained Android eyes). I have done a tonne of power management scripting/troubleshooting in laptops and other mobile devices but this is really my first serious foray into Android PM, so I may be missing something.

As I said, stock settings from CyberGR .v5. Signed in to all three Google accounts and left sync enabled. Turned off Wifi but left everything else enabled.
Drove around (phone paired to my truck for music) for a few hours today, light/moderate use, and I'm currently sitting at 69% battery remaining, coming up on 24 hours on battery. Realistically, this is probably a little lighter use than normal for me, plus I usually plug in when I'm in the Jeep as I'm running not only music over BT to my Jeep, but also streaming OBDii data from my ECU to Torque (and my screen is usually on full time while driving as I like to keep track of my mileage (troubleshooting fuel efficiency as well ).
So all said, stock settings with CyberGr, Radio XXXKB3, Wifi off, everything else on, and I should easily get 2 full days of light use.
Now that said, I'm still waiting for someone getting 3-5 days to chime in. I still feel something isn't quite right.
Wow. Practically the same as myself but my battery is now around 6-7 hrs before I need a charge. I will have to buy a new battery and see if that is the culprit. Over even just flash CM9 instead, who knows..

I doubt it's a bad battery. You're seeing the same life I was before I flashed the XXXKB3 radio and re-installed the ROM properly. Follow the installation instructions from the OP and see if that solves your problem.
After looking at an earlier shot here I notice my android os stays on most of the time hence my bad battery. How do I get it to sleep?

So does mine, but it is not an accurate reflection of battery drain, per android engineer Dianne Hackborn. Look at the Android OS percentage in my screen shots - it doesn't matter.
For those with excessive battery drain: install Battery Monitor Widget and Better Battery Stats from the market. Those two apps should provide all the data you need to troubleshoot poor performance.
Also, check your signal strength. Weak reception will drain your battery in a hurry.

[Q] Battery 0% Unknown and Screen Door Effect.

Greeting,
I have the 32GB 3G one, 2 issues I see here and I want to ask about it.
1 - Screen Doors Effect, If i look at the screen in 90 degree it's OK, but 45 degree like put on table and look from a 45 degree clearly I can see the Screen doors effect!.
Is that normal in Nexus 7 or just I got bad unit?! So RMA is a MUST!.
BTW: the Screen is GOOD, no black light bleeding, no dead pixels, no thin line.s
2 - Battery issues!, If the tablet hits 100% during charging, the battery goes to 0% Unknown!. "Red Icon"
Sometimes back to normal during the day! "while it's idle" or if i charge the tablet fora while!, but if i reboot, it went back to 0% Unknown!.
Now at the moment, it is charging and it's OK, but "hits 100% or reboot" the problem occur!
Is that relative to 4.2.1 problems or Also I have a bad unit maybe a defeat battery sensor?!
The tablet is working no sign of a Dead battery.
I bought it from US Google Store but now I'm outside US.
Update : Now while it's in charging mode, I use the tablet for no reason went to "Charging 0%"!!!
Here's a screen shoot for mine now, the battery goes live at 83% all of the sudden!.
as I said earlier the tablet working good except this "0% Unknown" with Red Icon all the time!.

Looks like an oddity in the Os... Possibly due to a write error during an update.
Just back up, and factory reset, And reinstall the the stock rom.

Did it and still the same!.
the problem is the system doesn't know what's the status of the battery anymore!.
Looks like Battery sensor is broken!
Are you rooted? If you are charge overnight and immediately wipe the battery stats in CWM when you wake up. This should identify if you have a bad sensor or if the tablet lost reference on the current status for some reason.
If you are not rooted you can unlock you tablet, try it out and if it still does not work, relock it and return it. Now is a good time to do it because you just did a factory reset on the data and it wipes it when you unlock the device.

last night, all of the sudden, nexus turned off and refused to be ON again! charged over night, no way to boot!, I can see the screen works while charging but no boot at all!.
after too many it does boot, as it's now in 2.4 I can't update it to 4.2.1 via OTA cause the battery is 0%.
Looks like I have to RMA it,
Finger crossed to get a Good one.

Huh? Wiping battery stats isn't going to do anything. It is in no way, shape, or form going to have any bearing on anything related to charge indication. Furthermore, the simple act of unplugging the tablet after charging it automatically causes the file to be wiped.
For the OP... if you remove the back from your tablet, there's a rather good chance that you'll find a loose or disconnected connector in the vicinity of the battery.

If I removed the back there's a chance I will lose the warranty.
any way, I did RMA with Google Store, will see how's my luck.

N7 Turns Off/Won't Turn Back On/Battery Status Issues - The Fixes **UPDATE**...

**Update** See new note added 2/16/13 at bottom!
Trying to provide a single informational resource on three, typically related issues:
1. My N7 turns off randomly
2. My N7 dies early at ___% battery (you fill in the value)
3. My N7 turned itself off, and won't turn back on
There’s a ton of threads all over the net regarding these issues, some providing unintentionally misleading info, some progress towards actually defining the issue and posing possible solutions. Reports of these issues started back when the N7 was first released and continue to this day. These issues have been reported to Google, but who knows whether or not the Google God will attend to them anytime soon.
What follows is what I’ve learned about these issues, how they affected most users, and how they were resolved for most users. This is not intended to capture every possible exception.
Issue #1:
For some users, their N7 just turns off randomly, regardless of battery level. For them, a loose battery connector is typically the cause. Popping off the back cover, re-seating the connector and possibly putting a tiny piece of tape to keep it secured over time is the fix.
Issue #2:
Many users notice that their N7’s turn off by itself, typically when the battery is at the lower-end of the % scale – anywhere from 40% down to 20% or so. Most users think that their N7 is running out of power "early" – but it seems that the 40% - 20% indication is erroneous - the battery is really at 0%, and is turning off as it should. This appears to be the caused by a software glitch that Google has to address. Doing a Factory Reset and a battery pull appears to remedy this issue for just about everyone. Please note that a corollary to this issue is the observation that once charged, the N7 remains at 100% far longer than it should.
Issue #3:
Taken out of context, having an N7 that won’t start seems like a terrible thing. But in most cases, it’s caused by Issues #1 and #2.
- If Issue #1 caused it: reconnect the loose cable, recharge your battery if needed, and you are good-to-go.
- If #2 caused it, your N7 battery is dead. Plug your N7 into the original power supply, patiently wait a few minutes then patiently hold down the power button up to 30 seconds (actually look at your watch – it’s gotta be “up to 30 seconds”!), for just about everyone reporting, it’ll start up just fine.
- If both of these methods don't work, try powering-down via the bootloader: plug your N7 into the charger, press Volume-Down and Power at the same time, in the bootloader choose "Power-Off Device", unplug your N7 and plug it back in. Do you see the battery meter? If so, you're done.
- While the original power supply should be the best to use in these troubleshooting procedures, if you are not getting a resolution of this issue, some N7 owners have had success with power supplied by USB via PC. Give it a try.
Since these problems are widespread, there are a number of “fixes” offered other than those above, that are somewhat anecdotal – they only “work” in one/couple instances and therefore there’s no real evidence that they are relevant. This group includes:
- Using battery calibration apps to fix the problem
- Dumping battery stats
- Uninstalling a specific " troublesome" app
Some users send their N7’s back to Google, and their new N7’s are deemed "fine". A number of knowledgeable users have speculated that most of these N7’s sent back really only suffered from the fixable issues listed above. To support this notion, some have reported that the replacements have the same “defects” as their first units, and they continue to send them back.
My experience:
My N7 worked perfectly for the first two weeks of ownership. Then it started turning off at 30% and 23%. I also noted that once I charged-up, my N7 would stay at 100% forever, leading me to believe that the battery readings were hosed-up. After these problems started, it would not go below the 30%-20% thresholds. The first time I tried to power it up - it wouldn't - and I thought is had totally borked. I tried eventually figured out that I needed to add power, wait, then hold down the power button. Worked every time.
For me, I wanted to know if I had a loose battery connector - a common problem, even though my N7 was not shutting down randomly, it was always at low battery levels. I figured that I'd just do the two things that research showed would work for sure, and would cover two different issues. I popped the back off, found that the connector as well-seated, but I pulled it off anyway to do the "battery pull". I reconnected and added a bit of electrical tape to keep it secured. I then did a Factory Reset using the option under "Settings/Backup and Reset". My N7 has been absolutely PERFECT since - just as most users report.
There is still the apparent issue of Google fixing the issue that causes the battery indication to be inaccurate.
I hope that this post serves to help others that experience these issues.

Update 2/16/13
I noticed in the past 2 days that my N7 started staying on 100% for prolonged periods of time. I figured that it once again lost it's ability to provide accurate battery status. Therefore, I projected that when it gets down to 30% or so, it'll turn off. It did.
I did the fixes I outlined in the OP and this time they didn't work. After pulling the battery and doing a factory reset, it still indicated 30% battery left - and I KNOW it's really at/near 0%.
I've been monitoring this issue since I made this thread and I've noticed that a growing number of N7 users were fixing this issue by simply turning off their N7's for a period of time. So I gave that a go.
I plugged my N7 in for about 20 minutes to give it the juice it would need to restart after the period of time being turned off. Then, I unplugged it and turned it off. Waited an hour, and when I restarted it, the battery had been recalibrated to 0%. Awesome!
So where does this leave us? Here are my thoughts:
- Since there are a number of different causes that result in the symptoms listed in the OP, those fixes are still relevant for those specific causes.
- We should add this latest fix to the collection, as it worked perfectly for me today.
- It's possible that our N7's should be periodically turned off - possibly overnight as it charges. I know that I plan to occasionally do this. If you don't have a disconnected/loose battery cable, or some issue with software that is remedied by a Factory Reset, maybe your N7 just needs to be turned off to recalibrate every now and then. Update: As of 5/3013, my N7 has been flawless. It's entirely possible that this is because I shut-down my N7 every week or two to recalibrate.
As always, I hope this keeps N7 users from freaking out, or sending their N7's back - unless it's really necessary.
And as I said in the OP, Google really needs to address this, as there's plenty of evidence that many N7 owners experience these issues. I'll update my report to Google.
Stock 4.1 upgraded to 4.2.1
No Root/unlock
Software or Hardware? Who know's..
I received my N7 on dec 20th 2012, still haven;t gotten to use it more than a day or 2... had battery issues off the hope, shut of at 21% ish... tried turning it on... just got screen flickering. Tried chargin it for hours, still nothing... after submitting an RMA after a couple days of charging with device on or off or with screen flickering ,,,nothing worked. Hung up with support... tried with USB connected to PC... got the device to boot.
I also in between random variations of cables and what not I did the D/C on battery ... didn't do much for me.
Charged device to 100% used down to 60% charged to 75%
Used again for 5 minutes
Device turned off.
Wouldn't boot
Another day of messing around... got it to turn on
Booted, battery was at 0% said it was shutting down
Tried a few more times (without charging) Just shut down cause battery was at 0%
Tried again, Booted said battery was at 85%
Light Use
Plugged in to charge, got home from work next day, device won't turn on
Been 3 days
New device form RMA gets in today.
If it comes with 4.1 I am going to run it for a few days because when i received my first device, it seemed to be working fine for the first 2 hours... got my device setup then decided to do the update to 4.2.1
Immediately my device shut down and gave me a screen flickering issue... did hard reset (held power for like 10 sec) device turned on... then experienced all the crap above.
So if i update after a couple days... and then run into issues... it would tell myself that there could be an issue with the update... but who knows as all the reading I have been doing, every scenario is different.
Google told me to submit a second RMA if it continues.... I'd rather not have the device if I just have to keep returning it.

Sorry to hear of this.
Not sure that I read that you did the Factory Reset, as suggested in the OP.
Give that a try.
Pulling the battery and/or doing a full Factory Reset is the fix for the vast majority of N7 users.
You may be an exception to that. Hope not.
Ya I have done the factory reset and battery pull, after the reset it just reset to 4.2.1 it came with 4.1.
Then it shut down on me again, I have my new unit it now. Running solid so far, good battery charge... not taking forever. hasn't shut down yet.
I'm going to run it on 4.1 for a day or 2 then update. Hopefully I don't run into issue after the update... it was probably coincidence but i ran into problems after updating on my first N7 to 4.2.1
Well, then unlike many other N7 owners, since you did both the battery pull and Factory Reset, you can rest assured that you didn't waste your time sending your N7 back - it needed replacement.
Good luck with it!
Just reporting back with a status. The fixes I described above seem to be working perfectly for days now. Check my OP and give those recommendations a shot if you're having any issues. Hope this helps to simplify a potentially confusing landscape and to resolve these issues for other N7 owners.
Two of the ”fixes” that folks anecdotally reported... using a battery calibration app and clearing battery stats are 100% guaranteed not to work. Those who actually ascribe any effect to them are merely using faulty reasoning. Quite simply, the calibration apps are just another method of wiping battery stats. Nothing at all in batterystats.bin has any bearing on battery life or reported charge indication.
This isn't directed at anyone in particular. Rather, I'm just expounding on something from the OP.
Definitely a very useful thread, given what seems to be a not too uncommon issue. As an aside, I've also experienced the problem after flashing a new kernel. Reflashing the previous kernel corrected the issue.

najaboy:
Excellent background on those two "fixes", and I agree 100%.
In creating this thread, I didn't want to really slam-dunk any of the "fixes" that other people have offered in other threads. But the research shows that you are exactly right: calibration apps and wiping battery stats will do absolutely nothing - guaranteed.
It's amazing how many misleading threads I had to wade-through to get to the fixes I recommend. No wonder so many people have returned their N7's to get one that "doesn't have the issues".
Crisis averted

Brand new Nexus 7 purchased today, came with 4.1 and I applied 4.2.1. Difficulties getting it powered on in the first place and lots of reboots and apparent crashes. Factory reset once and found some of those other threads you mentioned, disabled location services and that seemed to help a bit but still getting reboots. More digging and I found your post. Took your advice and pulled off the back of the Nexus 7, pulled the battery up and the connector basically fell out, it obviously wasn't seeded properly. Popped it back in properly and it's working much better now, although I'm going to give it 24 hours to make sure my issues are resolved. I just created an account in here to thank you. Think I'll stick around and see what else I can learn.
got my nexus 7 at September 2012,
got no problem with the abttery at the first charge,
but few weeks later, the battery started to die at 20% , then died at 30%, i didnt notice until i saw the battery history, it just jumped from 30% to 0%,
keep in mind that i'm not using the asus standard charger (dont know if this affect us)
tried charging it with the original charger, look like the problem is fixed, the battery died at 5%.
not sure if this is a coincidence or not
sorry for the bad English

Re: N7 Turns Off/Won't Turn Back On - A Summary...
I did have issue #2. I already had fully charged over night. Battery indicator showed 100% for a while, so I figured the problem wasn't solved. What I did was shut down my N7, then hook it up to the charger, boot my N7, unhooked it from charger, played 1 level in Amazing Alex and checked battery indicator again: 99%. I hope this means I solved the problem for now

Interesting. There have been reports of people addressing this problem by just turning off their N7 for a while, booting back up and all is well. Others like you added the plug/unplug charger to the mix and that seemed to work for them.
This issue has been reported to Google as well - there is a thread on Googles defect site that also lists all sorts of "fixes" that people have attributed to this issue.
Still, the only highly-repeatable fixes I've seen in various threads/forums are in the OP. But, who knows? If you can get your N7 past these issues, it's a good thing!
Re: N7 Turns Off/Won't Turn Back On - A Summary...
Hi, you can add me to the list. My N7 often turn off itself when battery level is under 50%. I have tried everything (factory reset, flash stock image...) but problem still persists.
So i have a N7 with half battery capacity most of the time. I hope next update will fix it otherwise i'll send it to Asus.
Edit: mine just switch off at nearly 25%, i'll try to downgrade to 4.1.2 and see if it helps...

Re: N7 Turns Off/Won't Turn Back On - A Summary...
Hi, i didn't open the battery cover because i don't want to lose my warranty, i prefer to let Asus do it for me.
My history with Asus is finished, bought 3 products from them, 3 have problems...
Btw: of course downgrade to 4.1.2 did nothing
Thanks for your answer and have a good weekend.
Cheers, Ros.
Edit: RMA asked, hope Asus will fix it.

My N7 is driving me crazy. Bought it last year around October, and it seemed fine at first. Battery would die at around 4-5% which is acceptable. Then it started getting worse over time. At this time it was completely stock - locked and not rooted. It got to the point where it would shut itself off when it reached 40%, so I decided to factory reset, pull battery, unlock, root and install Paranoid Android, hoping this would solve (or help) the issue.
Did all my unlocking and rooting last night, installed PA, set everything up, then started reading on my N7. Device turned off at 65% now. To say that I'm disappointed is an understatement. I'm all out of ideas on what I can do to fix this thing. I charged it overnight and disconnected it from the charger 3 hours ago, and it's still at 100%, even though I've used it quite a bit. Infuriating.

Sorry to hear this. This is what I'd recommend...
Take the N7 back to bone stock to reduce the number of variables. Follow my suggestions in the OP (I know you've already done them - but I'd still "do the drill" again). If this doesn't work, you can try some of the outlier suggestions that others have made that are less substantiated - why not at that point? If it's still a no-go, I'd return it. For your money, you deserve a perfect N7.

N910c battery issues?

Hi people.
DISCLAIMER:
-N910C
-Without any kind of modification (no root, custom kernal, boot recovery etc)
-Android 5.1.1 (XME) (N910CXXU1COJ5) (latest update provided by samsung as of 3rd May 2016)
-Original Samsung charger and usb cable, both charger and usb cable in good condition (just so you know asking me to change my charger, I tested it by charging my other samsung devices -- no problem)
Let me jump straight into my problem and hoping that someone would be able to help me.
The phone stop charging at 88% / 89% / 91% / 92%
How I know they stopped charging at the percentages mentioned? Plugged it in before sleep, 5-6 hours later it stuck at one of the percentages mentioned, most commonly 91%. Check the battery usage graph and it shows a straight horizontal line at 91% and onwards, and indicates like 13minute until full charge which it never happen. The device and the charger is not warm/hot, you know when they are charging they tend to get a little bit warmer.
Not always, meaning not everytime I charge my phone then it stopped charging at the percentage mentioned above. However, I would say it is about 8 out of 10 times. I read a lot of articles else where saying the same issue but different device. They came to a conclusion saying that is a hardware defect. Which, I do not think so (At least I hope it isn't). None of them mentioned if they charge their device with it power off or not.
So I tested it out a few times, both with the device on as well as with the device off. I noticed that with the device off, it can charge from 0% to 100% no problem (fast charge or not, same). So I would like to draw a hypothesis myself, it would be a software issue, I've no idea what but apparently some software bug/issue stopped it from charging further.
Not forget to mention that the battery constantly dropped straight to 0% when it reaches 5% (faster than vin diesel man), and sometimes it drops to 0 from around 5 - 20%.
Reformat, clear data, wipe cache, done it thrice = same issues remained. I also use some of the methods claim to be able to 'calibrate' the battery without root, also no cure to the current problems.
All these problems came along after the 5.1.1 update is what I am believing now. So I tried to downgrade it back to 5.0.1/4.4.4.
Guess what, I found out that Samsung locked the bootloader starting from 5.1.1, which prevent me from downgrading.
So my questions are:
1. Do anyone has any idea how to unlock the bootloader in android 5.1.1 without triggering any sort of knox counter?
2. Have anyone experienced/experiencing the problem, any solutions?
3. Have anyone tried 6.0.1 marshmallow? Do you have any problem as mentioned above? This will serve as an alternative if there is no way to unlock the bootloader in 5.1.1.
4. Can you downgrade from 6.0.1 to 5.1.1?
Thanks for your time.

Hi people.
DISCLAIMER:

No, that app is ... let's just say it is not helping. Ahh... but my battery is only a year old, and I've been taking good care of it as much as I could. Still thinking to invest a new battery or nah..

Thank you for your information! Anyway, I still would like to think it has something to do with samsung's software version. *stubborn me* lol. Since my warranty is super void now, currently flashed custom rom. Will observe if the problem persist. :good:
How can you downgrade the 910c to 5.1.1?

Facing the same issue. Got a new battery. Its no different.
I'm on an N910C using 6.0.1 (have also been on 4.4.4 and 5.1.1) and have never experienced this problem. I never use fast charging, always wireless charge and occasionally via USB. Recently got a new Samsung battery directly from Samsung UK (my old one was 18 months old, still performing well but not quite getting my usual 6hrs SoT any more, so it was time for a replacement). The new one charges to 100% every time (whether the phone is on or off), and drains down to 1% as you would expect, with no 'jumps', before shutting down - not that I do that regularly, because as far as I know that's not a good way to treat lithium ion batteries. To eliminate battery itself as the cause, I would recommend getting a new battery direct from Samsung to make sure it is genuine, or perhaps try an Anker.

Thank you. I assume this is done on Odin right?
What about the bootloader & modem?
Haven't used Samsung phones since the days of Galaxy S2.
I'm a little rusty but somewhat familiar

Battery calibration or replacement needed?

Slow charging on custom ROMs forced me to go back to stock ROM and just before moving I was on AOSP extended and battery calibration issue started after flashing this ROM (I m not blaming anyone). So I tried to calibrate battery (after flashing stock ROM) by completely draining battery and charging it to 100%
After charging for whole night in switch off mode, in morning I found it stuck at 96% and after booting and restarting again, battery suddenly dropped down to 70%
So I tried to calibrate it by Pressing power button for 7-10 sec and connecting turbo charger (with official wire too) after screen off and gone to sleep. And I got a nice battery backup next day i.e. (from 100 to 0%) of 4 hours and 15 mins(with a random shut down during call around 24%). But again when I connected charger after complete drainage, just after 30 mins it showed 80% of charge and finally stuck at 95% and after 30 mins, it decreased to 94%. Now battery is again draining and lost 40% in just 24 mins
Note : battery calibration issue started after flashing ROM after clearing INTERNAL STORAGE with system, cache, data, dalvik. I didn't cleared internal storage before flashing any other ROM, may be this is a cause of messed up battery calibration.
Should I appeal for battery replacement or is there any way to calibrate it perfectly. (Currently I m on locked bootloader)

As somebody has told you already, use the root method of calibration, by clearing the battery stats file (or something like). Of course, you need to unlock your bootloader. I doubt flashing a ROM or erasing a partition can cause your battery to go bad.
In addition, which stock ROM did you flash (I recall seeing your posts in the 93-14 thread)? Was that test you performed with a fresh flash, nothing else installed besides the stock apps?
Bear in mind that with Nougat, your battery usage might be quite high after the first boot (either after a clean flash or a wipe cache/Dalvik) as the system rebuilds the caches. That being said, 40 % drainage in 24 minutes is quite unusual.... Your battery experience is sounding like the Nexus battery failures, with the random shutoff and other symptoms (for which it seemed a solution was to RMA under warranty).
Still, I'd like to see what your phone battery is like with a stock ROM and clean flash, no other apps installed, and monitor the drainage.

I flashed naugat stock firmware. And the battery drainage is not after first boot, it's around 10th boot with 4-5 apps installed
I think apps are not responsible.
Should I try to calibrate again or visit service centre?
And what is RMA?

Okay, that was the fastboot ROM then that you flashed?
Can I request you either wipe your phone back to factory settings (or re-flash the ROM, with wiping everything), reboot and see what your battery life is like, without any other apps besides stock on there please? Can you post battery graphs whilst you're on stock?
RMA = return merchandise authorisation - a form/request that you get to return your phone for a replacement rather than service.
If you wish to follow zeomal's suggestion, yes - you will have to root again.

There is no such thing as battery calibration with newer versions of Android. Once your phone charges to 100% the batterystats.bin file is automatically cleared. Clearing your internal storage should do nothing to the current state of the battery.
This sounds like a defective battery, and I would take it to a Motorola Service Center or purchase a new battery off WitRigs ($20)- although, manually replacing the battery WILL void your warranty.

That's pretty old but still relevant. The battery graphs that you see in Settings>Battery are based on the BatteryStats.bin file. The percentage that you see is based on actual readings from the battery.

Thanks for that - seems your screen is on a lot, but if that's because you're using your device, then I don't see anything out of the ordinary with regards to your battery. Hopefully there's no random shutdown when receiving a call either.

I am facing a similar problem in Moto G4 plus from the day I upgraded to Android 7.0.
The battery percentage stuck at 92% or 95% and as soon as I remove the charger it drops to ~60%
I tried switching off holding power key for 7-8 sec as i read that the battery calibration is done after that. It worked for only one time.
All of this problem happens when charging using Turbo charger.
For now i am using normal charger and battery is charging/discharging normally !!
