softkeys don't works - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Now soft keys no longer work. Not a problem of the screen as the screen unlock screen phone keys, unlocking and camera work perfectly well how they work by placing the phone in landscape mode. the touch screen at the bottom works with all applications and games so it must be some upgrading of some application google. Would you be able to help me please? OS 5.1.1 Lollipop stock, but before returning stock was also with me always root Android 5.5.1 L. I did a factory reset and I deleted all data from the N4 including wipe cash and all data from recovery. I do not know what to do ...

Can you reflash the system partition with a fresh copy from the stock image through fastboot and see what happens?

[Q] Google Nexus10 - After Unrooting, Storage & Google Play not accessible

I had successfully unrooted my son's google nexus 10 (passed over to me after he had the same problem given belowoin the rooted version) , using the tricks in one of the postings in this forum, flashed android 4.2.2 JDQ39 update and brought back to OEM lock state using fastboot.
After this android boots and i am able to login with my userid. Problem is, Google play is not accessible after unrooting, message is: 'unfortunately google play has stopped'.
Camera is also not working, it stops with an android message 'no external storage available' and another gray bar message at the bottom of the screen: 'mount USB storage before using the camera'. Why is this happening even after bringing back the OS to original state?
Could any of the experts give a solution to this? Without any apps to install and camera, (email, chrome brower and a few basic apps work), it is as good a paperweight now.

Best way would be to download and flash the factory image from Google and then everything will be back to normal. Perhaps clearing the caches and/or data of the non working apps might work?

Thanks for your quick reply. Tried what you suggested, reinstalled factory image from google, erased userdata and cache from fastboot, but the problem is still there.

[Q] Nexus 4 4.3 update won't get past unlock screen without crashing

I had the update notification for 4.3 today and went to install it. Everything appeared fine. However, when the phone rebooted and showed my usual screen unlock, I swiped it in and then the phone crashes back to the X - so android is loading and I can see my wallpaper and the time and everything as usual, but screen unlock reboots the phone. The only other problem that I've noticed is that the forward camera doesn't work to use face recognition to get the screen to unlock - the screen is always showing as black when normally my face is there.
Any tips for a fix? I'd rather not wipe all my data as I'm on a slowish bandwidth connection for the next couple of weeks.

Yes - why? Can I download the data somehow using adb? What difference does this make?
Got the same problem on my Nexus 4, updated via normal Ota, unlocked bootloader and rooted.
Any solutions apart from a complete factory reset?

Well, you could make a nandroid backup. That way, you will have your data saved. After that, install a stock rooted 4.3 ROM and only restore data from recovery.
Or, Adb could work too. It would backup your data to your PC, and you could restore after you reinstalled the ROM.
I don't really know why, but many updates to 4.3 failed. That's why a data wipe is always recommended.
I always use Titanium Backup. It's very simple and easy to use.
I've used Nandroid before - not sure why I didn't think of it - thanks.

I had this exact same problam and was able to fix it without losing data, settings or installed apps.
My Solution:
Download factory 4.3 image and extract system.img. You need to untar the gzipped file and then unzip the included zip file to get system.img
Flash only the system.img and reboot. (fastboot flash system system.img)
When the phone is rebooted, root will be gone, but all installed user apps, data and settings should be preserved.
Background:
After the 4.3 OTA, my phone would reach the lock screen and receive notifications. Sometimes a call would make it through and I would be able to answer, but most of the time calls went straight to voicemail. Callmaster might have contributed to this behavior.
However, if I attempted to enter a pattern on the lock screen, the phone would immediately reboot.
I was rooted using SuperSU prior to the OTA. My Nexus was also affected by the issue were attempting to access the 4.2.2 Security Settings resulted in an error. I never got around to fixing that issue, but suspected that the 4.3 and 4.2.2 problem were related.
solution that worked for me: keep failing pattern until prompted to type in google account details to login, it then worked for me after that, no longer rebooting when unlocking

[Q] Lost lock screen, user profiles and menu button on 4.3 update

Hello and thanks for any useful responses
I tried to update my nexus 7 from stock rooted 4.2.2 with the OTA zip in CWR.
It failed and my tablet wasn't able to boot, next I flashed the 4.3 boot loader, boot and system image files using the toolkit and successfully installed 4.3.
This is where my problems begin, I no longer have a lock screen to choose between the two profiles that I had. Notifications are not being updated, my menu button doesn't work yet I still have all my apps and data which work.
Tried to downgrade to 4.2.2 by flashing the same images above using the 4.2.2 versions but then the tablet doesn't start (stuck on the X)
Reflashed 4.3 images and same odd behavior?
Any ideas on a fix or am I stuck doing a backup and factory restore?
Thanks again
Well you gotta like finding the solution to your own problem.
Not sure why this was happening but if someone has the same behavior go into your settings > users and create another mock account. Once this is done everything will work as before then delete the account.
I lost certain settings like my shortcuts but that's a quick fix.
Good luck

Home button in NP Remote not working with 6.0.1

After updating to Marshmallow 6.0.1 MMB29M the Home button of the Nexus Player remote and of my Logitech K700 keyboard stopped working. In the past pressing this button brought me straight back to the Home screen (Leanback Launcher), but now it doesn't. In order to get back to the Launcher I have to use the back key from all running apps. At first I thought it was a problem with the Home key in the remote itself, but it's also happening with the Home key of my K700 keyboard. I doubt that both keys broke simultaneously. This issue started after the NP was updated to 6.0.1 via OTA. But to make sure that it was not a bad OTA flash, I re-flashed 6.0.1 using Wug's Tookit a couple times... with and without root, but still have the same issue. Did the Home button function changed? I need it because I have to get back to the Home screen to start other Net apps after I start IPVanish. Clicking the back button while IPVanish is running disconnects the VPN session. Any suggestions?

Same thing happened to me. You have to wipe the nexus player well. Depending on which recovery program you use, wipe everything 3 or 4 times. I wiped everything except internal memory or the new rom would be wiped out and I would have to start with the player flashed back to stock again. Or you can wipe everything if you can get ADB sideload to work. Never worked for me.
hope this helps.

Thanks for the tip. Just to clarify... I use TWRP and have tried wiping the cache several times (If I remember correctly Dalvik Cache hasn't been around since KitKat) - What other partitions did you wipe? The Data partition and/or the Internal Storage partition? Did you have to re-install all your apps?
EDIT: I guess (Settings -> Storage & reset-> Factory data reset) has the same effect as doing a full wipe. The factory reset restored the functionality of the Home button on both my NP Remote and my K700 Keyboard.
Thanks again...

How would you wipe any possible malware from your phone?

Hi
I've got a 2nd hand nexus 6p. I would like to be completely sure it has no keylogger, no remote control app (cerberus style), etc.
A factory reset would be enough? What should I do?
Best regards

i would go to twrp and wipe data, cache, dalvik, and system then reflash the rom and gapps if needed and you will be fine
Flash the latest factory image
When you boot,
If no message displayed a factory reset is sufficient.
If yellow message (unlikely), then you sideload the most recent OTA + factory reset
If orange message then flash factory image. If you need extreme security (against publicly unknown vulnerability), you relock but that will *brick* your device unless the factory flash worked (which you can never be sure of). Don't relock if you are scared of malware.
For maximum security, throw out the phone
Or put it in a Safe! Better yet in a Force Field!
If orange I think you need to delete system and image partition then install rom.
I had virus like issues kept just reflashing would have issues a month later.
So I decided to just delete everything learned how to out the phone into download mode and did fresh install of pure Nexus and gapps runs like new again my battery will last 17 hrs of use now before I was getting barley 12 with little use.
