Bricked Nexus 4 - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys i got a friend's nexus 4 to repair, he said his phone memory was full and then suddenly something happened and then he restarted the phone and since then he is not able to get in, i opened the recovery and saw that all the phone partitions are corrupted because i was not able to mount them or factory reset the phone from there went into bootloader mode and the phone was locked tried to unlock it but it didn't unlock perhaps due to corrupted partitions?
So now my only concern is that, is there anyway i can still repair the phone with locked bootloader? Because with locked bootloader i am not even able to format the partition
Thanks

Try locking your bootloader and unlocking it again. I've been in a similar situation and that fixed it for me.

Sounds like your memory may have failed, in which case you need to send it in under warranty or get the mainboard replaced

[Q] Factory Reset from Fastboot

Hi everyone,
My phone cannot get into recovery and I need to factory reset. Is it possible to do this using fastboot from the console?
My phone keeps going back to the fastboot screen and this is what it says:
Invalid Flash Mode (S)
10.9B(*) (sha-le9f557, 2013-05-24 14:49:34)
eMMC Info: Size 8GB
Device is LOCKED. Status Code: 0
Battery OK
Connect USB
Data Cable
Failed to hab check for boot: 0x56
Fastboot Reason: Boot Failure
This comes up after I hold down the both volume buttons and the power button and try to load Recovery. I get the dead android with the red traingle.
If I start up normally I get the dead android with the red triangle again, and then it eventually goes back to fastboot, saying the reason is Flash Failure
Any help is gratefully appreciated
Thanks

when you get to Android Andy what happens when you hold volume down and tap volume up?
If you get in there I would wipe the cache partition as well... tho either of these may not help the issue... what were you doing prior to this happening? were you updating and get this upon its restart? Did it die and power up to this?... did it just randomly shut off and power up to this?

When I got to android andy the android system recovery 3e menu popped up. I wiped the cache partition and did a factory reset, then rebooted but I'm still going in circles between the dead android and fastboot. Prior to this I had tried using safestrap to set up a recovery, but when I rebooted, I got stuck at fastboot. There was one point when I got to what I think was the fastboot menu and from there I tried flashing cyanogenmod, which I'm pretty sure was a mistake. Now I cant figure out how to get back to that menu.

First, what do you mean by "set up a recovery"?
I noticed your bootloader is locked. That means no custom recoveries can be flashed, so that's probably your problem.
If you tried to fastboot the Cyanogenmod zip (!?) that definitely didn't help.
What exactly are you trying to accomplish? Are you trying to reset to sell or return or something? Also, what system version did you have (or, if you don't know that, when did you get the phone and have you taken any OTA updates)? And were you previously rooted?
It sounds like you had a bad flash. Give me that info and I'll try to help you unbrick it...

Yeah I'm still a noob at this, sorry. By set up a recovery I mean manually installing safestrap because clockworkmod doesn't support xt907, and I couldn't flash it manually from my computer, probably because of what you said about my bootloader being locked. Really all I want to do is get my old OS back, just the stock android that I got when I bought it. I had version 4.1.2 which I got from an OTA update, and I have not been previously rooted. Thanks for being patient with me by the way, I understand people like me probably make you want to rip your hair out...

Ah OK. That clarifies a lot.
So, I'll explain a few things here since you seem a little lost
1: safestrap is not the same as clockworkmod. It's based off of TWRP, but it's not technically even a custom recovery, just a bootstrap hijack.
2. Yeah, you can't flash safestrap. It's actually installed via an app, and you do need root to use it.
3. When did you update? If you did the latest OTA, you unfortunately can't downgrade... If you didn't, we can help you unlock the bootloader, then you can downgrade at will.
4. If you do unlock, you can install clockworkmod or any other recovery. If you can unlock, I strongly advise you do it.

Oh ok, thanks for explaining. I'm not sure when I updated, but I know for sure it was OTA, so I can't downgrade. And do I need to unlock to fix this whole thing? Because for now I just want my phone back... I'm not exactly worried about flashing or rooting or anything.

So this might be a stupid question... but which option do I choose after typing in my phone model? RSD, Fastboot [snapdragon] or moto-fastboot [omap]?

Rsd. From that point you should be able to choose whether you want to erase everything or save it. Worked like a charm for me, took about 10min

Broken screen - USB debug disabled - What to do?

Hey all,
my wife dropped my previous Nexus 4 many times and now the screen is dead. Would like to sell it for parts. Digitizer still works. Now, I would like to clean everthing, and it a perfect world, install Lollipop!
But, I need to get access to the phone. I've spent many hours now reading different methods, but I'm getting to a common issue: USB debug (ADB) not enabled. I would need to get in recovery mode and put a custom ROM. However, even with the method to get into recovery mode, I would need the screen at the choice at boot to select Recovery, unless someone here tells me exactly what button to press to get into this.
I'm also open for any other solution.
Is the bootloader unlocked? Do you have a custom recovery? If your bootloader is unlocked you can boot into twrp custom recovery and get access to your files though it.

Well I only got in the boot when I got the phone the first time a year ago and wiped everything to factory, so I don't think I still have the bootloader unlocked, unless wiping everything doesn't wipe the bootloader.

Unless you specifically unlocked it using fastboot or a tool kit I doubt it's unlocked. Which is too bad because it would have made it easier to get to the files. Now you'll have to blindly use the keys to get into recovery and do a factory reset. And hope for the best because you'll probably never know for sure whether you got it right or not.

Is there any way to save data from a soft bricked Nexus 4?

I am experiencing with a soft bricked Nexus 4. Surely, I tried to do "Power + volume down" and tip on the internet. But, it did not work for me. my cell is on the bricked. For now, there is no way except for "reset to facory". But, I did not data back up. It's my dilemma. :crying: First of all, I should try to save data to my computer.
If my computer is broken, I can take the HDD(storage) out from that, and save data using connecting device like "SATA to USB". As Nexus 4 use only internal storage on (maybe, flash rom?)the board, I can not take it out.
Is there any way to save data from a soft bricked Nexus 4?
I found one thread have the same problem. My symptoms is the same as his
--------------------------------------------
the phone boots, shows the google logo then goes into those 4 colourful dots that fly around and it just stays like that. I left it like this over night and nothing happened.
--------------------------------------------
I am referring to the answer. So, I try to do wipe cache on recovery mode according to that. It doesn't help me.
Thanks for any other tips or comments in advance.

Unlocking your bootloader will wipe your device. So in your case it's not an option. You're probably going to have to give up on your data and lose it to get your device working again.

Thanks jd1639.:good:
After reading about unlocking bootloader, unfortunately I get to know that will wipe all the system data and my data on my device. It's the same as what you comment.:crying:
A couple of years ago, there was an application program for Rom Flashing called Flashtool. I could do that with unchecking option "wipe user data". Surely, to back up data before that was strongly advised though.
Maybe, due to security, it seems to be impossible on recent version. I
am anticipating for any other idea to save data before get it work again.
Thanks in advance.

If your bootloader is unlocked you may not be. Search for items you can Flash to fix the bootloop issue. I don't have the URL handy sorry. If your bootloader is locked you might be in trouble. There are some tricks in the same fix post to tell you how to try to get back into your phone and then once you do get the bootloader unlocked quickly so you can load the fix

Yeah, I never unlocked the bootloader. I let it sit for a few hours, turned it on for S&G, tried and succeeded to get into Recovery mode for a few minutes, but because I forgot the way to access the menu. It dropped back into the bootloop. Going to try again in a few hours, now I know how to access the menu, I'll try wiping cache.

If your not gonna send for warranty I would unlock your bootloader. Also get your hands on the 4 core modified boot for your Android version. Find out more in the BLOD thread.
